Freedom Blend is religiously affiliated and caught some attention in the media after Broadlawns hospital cancelled their contract because "some of the business's beliefs on marriage and sexuality are at odds with the hospital's diversity, equity and inclusion efforts." -DSM Register That being said, they have great coffee, great prices and kind staff. They refurbished an old car wash into a coffee house! The drive thru is very convenient. My only issue, and one the reasons for three stars, is because I only drink breves (coffee with half and half) and they inevitably run out of half and half by the end of the week. We are visiting from out of town and searched for a coffee shop nearest our route to an event. Didn't know anything about this coffee shop, but we just wanted a decent cup of coffee. This place far exceeded our expectations! Clean, organized, with a very attentive staff. Ordered chai latte, café au lait, and iced coffee cake latte. Every one of them was delicious. Our son, who works as a barista, thought the coffee cake latte was exemplary. He loved the foam which was very flavorful. Really sorry that we don't live near here because we would definitely be repeat customers. Especially with the gathering room in the back! Very cute and cozy spot!!! I've gotten tea from here before, but today I tried the coffee. The employees are super helpful and friendly. I got an almond milk latte with maple and cinnamon- very delicious, not too sweet at all (I prefer this, as someone who usually drinks coffee black), and it came in a cute mug with cinnamon sprinkled on top. The price is really good for the quality and portion. There are outlets everywhere for those who want to study or do computer work, there's various places to seat with nice dimmed lighting and calming music playing... such a nice place to relax for a casual hangout. I'm personally not a fan of coffee (or in fact anything bitter.) But as I hang out with people who are, I occasionally get to visit really interesting places like Freedom Blend. First, the building is fantastic! The outside has a great look and the inside boasts an amazing, working fireplace and even has a large room for hosting special events and parties. Both people I spoke to at the counter were very friendly and quick to offer great suggestions. I tried the honey lemonade and a fifty/fifty, which was half tea and half lemonade. At their suggestion I had it with their green tea and a berry flavoring. The only downside is I wanted more and more. My wife had an iced mocha, which she enjoyed. It was lunch time, so for food I ordered the Cuban, sanz pickles. My wife had the chicken salad. Those both came with chips. Our son had a peanut butter and jelly. His reaction was, "Wow, that's a lot of jelly!" My sandwich was really good, though it came with an exceptionally generous portion of mustard on it...some of which I removed. The protein was a nice mix and tasted good together. The bun it came on was pressed and enjoyable. Unfortunately, the chicken salad came on really, really dry bread. It felt as hard as toast, but was clearly not toasted. I personally thought the chicken salad in it was fairly bland, but my wife claimed she liked it. It's hard to tell as she's too nice sometimes. I enjoyed the location, the service, the drinks and my food. I'd be glad to go back again and maybe try breakfast next time. read more

I was excited to try this place out after reading the story of how it came to be. (If you aren't familiar, check out their website!) I was greeted by both people behind the counter and given a chance to look over the menu. I was excited when I saw they were still serving their holiday drinks, so I went with the Christmas Cookie Latte. I was not hungry but they did have a good looking selection of pastries and bagels. I saw the bagels were from 5 Borough Bagels. About 30 seconds after I got done paying my drink was ready already! It was a perfect temperature for my liking and tasted amazing! I found a place to sit by the fireplace and relaxed in one of their quiet, music-filled rooms. There are a few different seating areas, all with a modern, lodge feel. There is plenty of parking out front and they even have a drive thru. I will definitely be back here soon! read more

Okay, WOW. I was totally blown away by this place!! First off, it's adorable af. Complete with rustic, chic vibes and a modern meets cozy cabin feel - fireplace included. Secondly, the hazelnut oat milk cream cappuccino was soothingly scrumptious. I don't know how this hidden Hickman gem flies so low under the radar, because it's beautiful! Not to mention, their mission is truly phenomenal for the youth in the Greater Des Moines area. It's very spacious and such a great spot to enjoy local goodness while also supporting a local cause. read more

This place is one of the coolest coffee places I've ever seen!!! The coffee is the best I've ever had!!! They roast it as well as grind it on site so it's really fresh that's probably why it's so good. I usually put cream and sugar in my coffee but I didn't even need it! It's that good. I'll be back!!! They have a great cause too. It's to help troubled youths find a skill and learn a trade. read more

A hidden jewel. Kind of hidden. I work at River Place and spotted this cute restaurant as I drove down Hickman. Looked it up online to find it's a coffee shop. I don't drink coffee but read they make their own baked goods and serve breakfast and lunch. I was in. First, love love love their ginger banana muffin. Also tried their wonderful blueberry muffin. Muffins were reasonably priced at $2.75 each. Their chicken salad sandwich with pickle and chips for $8 was a good deal for s healthy homemade alternative to Subway. I could tell the bread was homemade also. Their coffee seemed reasonably priced at $2-4. I'm going to try their teas next time. Second, their interior is comfy and warm. Having a fireplace doesn't hurt. Third, Freedom Blend employs local youths in a job training program. My servers were very nice. Even told me how tasty the ginger banana muffin was. So, I'm hooked on this place. I can't stop raving about. A local place with homemade food, a warm atmosphere and helpful staff. What's not to like. read more

This is one of my favorite places to come whether I just want a quick cup of coffee or a place to hang out and spend a few hours. I love the mission behind the business and that will keep me coming back time and time again. It doesn't hurt that the coffee is great too, though! The beans are all roasted in house and the food is amazing. I love that I can get a 5 borough bagel without actually have to trek all the way out to West Des Moines. I have been buying their coffee for several years. Great fresh roasted coffee, I really like their Sumatran blend. Plus it is a great local youth ministry. Love the coffee and the ambiance. Food is delicious. Reasonable prices. I come often and wonder why the staff dont get better supervision. Almost poor customer service, but they have some decent moments. Right now the loud clerks make it hard to enjoy the fire in the next room. Its nice they know the customers but waiting on patrons and keeping your voice down seems an obvious basic to the job. Took 6 minutes to get half and half. Herself saw an FB post by one of favorite TV8 Anchors announcing this new business he profiled on This Is Iowa (See how I did that without mentioning your name, Eric.) Well, it was Saturday and too early to get our nails done and we had already gone to the gym...so lunch it was. I had the Cuban, Herself the chicken salad, and my sister the turkey club. They came with a cuppa chips and a pickle spear. My Cuban was the best of the three, but I wouldn't have turned down any of them. They were out of bacon and my sister said she could have done without the extra bread (she has a healthy lifestyle) but I told then it would have just been a turkey sandwich. She had the chai latte. I tried that too. It was lovely. The young woman at the counter had a momentary problem finding it on the register. But, that is the thing about this place. It is designed by the Freedom for Youth Ministry as an opportunity for the young adults to learn job skills. Don't be fearful my fellow heathens, there was only a sense of a welcoming host with a trainee at the till, no proselytization. In any case, I never tried a chai latte but this was worth a second taste. I had the honey lemonade and enjoyed it thoroughly. Herself, of course, had the mocha. She pronounced eminently suitable, but it still just tasted like burned coffee to me. The chips were a real treat. Obviously kettle style and very rich tasting. The setting is in three zones, the resturant area, a large patio, and a room with easy chairs and a hearth. I'm looking forward to the first crisp day with a mug of something hot and the ladies scattered about for a semi-regular meeting of the stretch pants clan. read more

I ran across this place on IG this morning. I did a little research to find out more about it only to find a lot of great information about how Youth Ministries is helping the kids and young adults in our community, including through this coffee shop. I am surprised I haven't heard about this sooner, but glad I know now. I stopped around 11AM. What should have been a normal outing turned into a fiasco when I locked my phone, keys, wallet, and most importantly, my one month old child in the car. You may ask- how does this happen? I can't answer that. Apparently my brain had a short circuit this morning. Anyway, I walked in to use the phone only to discover, I don't know anyone's phone number except my aunt & grandpa who live 45 minutes away. Good thing the amazing people working here had some good remediation ideas while I was crying my face off. They helped me by calling the police, a tow truck, the lock smith across the street... and what's more, lended me an umbrella while I stood by the car waiting for help to arrive and gifted me the most delicious Carmel apple cider drink. I've had other warm ciders... never one with Carmel. It was delicious. Even fellow patrons were expressing such sincere kindness- offering their phone, standing with me while help arrived, offering hugs. When the dust settled I went in to enjoy the rest of my cider. The interior is warm and cozy with wooden booths, tables, and other details. There were other moms with their babies and kiddos too. I ordered the honey bear latte that had cinnamon and honey in addition to the chicken salad sandwich. The chicken salad wasn't the best I've ever had but I think what would turn it up a notch would be to offer it on a croissant. The coffee was great. Simple. Delicious. Overall, I love the mission of this place and everyone I interacted with today was supremely kind. That's enough for me. I want to see this succeed! read more
