This cute lil place was an incidental find while walking around downtown Des Moines, and I'm so glad we stopped in! The shop was tidy and welcoming, featuring vintage lunch box decor, swings instead of chairs up at the countertop, and a map to mark where you're from. The service was friendly and prompt. Everything was very inviting. They have lots of seating and games to play while you eat your cupcake. We tried a variety and every single one of the cupcakes we got was delicious. Stopped in for national cupcake day. I wanted to celebrate with my mom. They have vegan and gluten free options. I will admit when I stop in I make a weird combination. Only the gluten free carrot cake is dairy free so that is what I get with vegan pb frosting. Weird combination but oh so good. If you order gluten free or vegan they do make them in front of you. I'm from out of state and I was staying at a hotel nearby. We had an early dinner next door at the Taproom and noticed Molly's cupcake next door and decided to try them out. Specifically their crème brûlée and their lemonade raspberry cupcakes (available in the summer or special order other times, like for my birthday which they graciously did!) and recently tried their cake, a little more expensive but worth it, STUFFED with deliciousness! You receive three 6 inch layers separated by parchment paper and covered by plastic wrap when you walk in and you are asked if you would like a drink. They have a party room that they host the class. The room has a new apron for you to use and each spot has all the supply's you will need for the class. The instructor walks you through all the steps at the perfect pace. Wow. These have to be the best cupcakes I've ever tasted. I ordered 6 of them half an hour before closing so I was nervous they might be dry since it was the end of the day but they were absolutely perfect. The tops of the cupcakes had the perfect bite, the inside super moist with the tastiest fillings. What I enjoyed about them most was that they were not sickeningly sweet. A search of the best Scotcheroos in the Des Moines area led us to Molly's and we were not disappointed! We arrived on a Saturday evening about an hour or so until close, and they still have a such a great selection. The cupcakes looked absolutely divine! We were graciously offered a sample of their scotcheroo and of course it was delicious. We ended up getting a scotcheroo, 4 large cupcakes, and a mini. Throughout the next couple days we tried each cupcake and they were seriously some of the best cupcakes we've tried anywhere! And the scotcheroo was just as amazing! We've been to Molly's Cupcakes in Iowa City but it's our first time in Des Moines. Thankfully, the standard is the same. My husband and I split the peach cobbler, caramel apple, and chocolate raspberry cupcakes. All three were a score for us! The peach cobbler is made with a moist, dense vanilla cake. The icing seemed whipped and airy, topped with a dash of cinnamon and a slice of peach. The entire cupcake was chilled. Absolute perfection. The caramel apple cupcake uses the same dense vanilla cake-- which, by the way, is quickly becoming a favorite for me-- and SURPRISE, is *not* filled with caramel. (Thank goodness because that would have been overload for me.) It is filled with homemade apple pie filling! Lots of yummy chopped apples and cinnamon (but not too much) that provides a nice texture. The icing might be apple flavored, I couldn't tell but my husband picked up little notes of green apple. Topped with abundant caramel drizzle. Again, this was a winner for us. Lastly, the chocolate raspberry cupcake. A chocolate cake with raspberry compote filling, topped with chocolate ganache and a fresh raspberry. It's similar to the Ron Bennington or Double Chocolate but with raspberry instead of peanut butter/butterfingers or chocolate. Scrumptious. On top of enjoying every cupcake, the customer service was stellar. The restaurant was clean, bathrooms included. The service here is outstanding Surperb! The shop bent over backwards for me. I tried to return the favor when I was told they were out of my special order too. I came to get my cupcake fix since I found out about my gluten allergy and it fulfilled all my cupcake expectations. My brother loved his cookie monster cupcake. With one bite he was gone in a cupcake daze and I didnt here a peep till he was done. I had a chocolate gluten free cupcake and a raspberry latte. My cupcake was so soft and doughy just like any cupcake would be. Delicious and chocolatey with chocolate chunks in the cupcake too. They added a special gluten free frosting on top that was just as delicious and fluffy as any other frosting would be. My life is complete now. Definitely five star quality, but I was very disappointed to find out they were a chain that's all over the place. Definitely a letdown. Satisfied with customer service. I was able to place an order two days prior to my event. I needed to change my order the next day and they were happy to update it without any trouble. I spent $22.00 for 6 Center filled cupcakes ($3/cupcake) and 2 vegan cupcakes ($2/cupcake). I don't like the parking. The parking lot in front of the door is for residents, I think. (There are signs that state they are reserved parking) Therefore making customers park on the street- where parking is already packed!!! I got away with parking in the lot since I was only there for a couple minutes each time I was there. Shop is cute. But small. Can get packed and busy very quickly. Could get a little overwhelming for those who don't like a lot of ppl in small places. Simple decor. Simple menu that's easy to read. Booth seating available.
