Had bigger order for cinnamon rolls. Called the week ahead and put in the order. Was able to lock in the time and had no problem paying over the phone a head of time for the two dozen cinnamon rolls. They were picked up as planned and brought in to our place of work. They have all types of baked goods but this was our first time using Bake Shoppe for this size of order. The staff as a whole are nice and they get me my goodies so I can have my diabetic coma and I'm off. The Bake Shoppe, like many operations these days, is running into staffing issues. Or at least so it would seem. Snafu's in the kitchen, delayed start on opening ("Come back in an hour. We'll be ready then."), etc. The item that keeps us coming back is the Italian Cream cupcake. Consistently flavorful and not too dry. Really the best of this variety in town. Other items are good, but not as stand out. The Shoppe will take phone orders, makes sheet cakes, and other items if you want to plan ahead for an event. I will continue to stop in, and anticipate some of the issues of the day will be resolved by then. Things to know: * I hate to bother folks by calling the store, but so far it would have been worthwhile for me to have taken a minute of their time to confirm hours and availability. I stepped into the Bake Shoppe to get some sweet treats for a friend on a Friday afternoon. I was surprised to see there was a line, but there seemed to be a combination of people just getting a treat and others who were picking up pre-ordered its. This local business is not very visible but is definitely worth finding. They have traditional cakes and cupcakes, items for a tea party like petit fours and tea cookies; and ordinary items like cookies and whoopee pies. Because it was late in the day, the variety wasn't the best, but she offered to make up more of the mini cheese cakes because they only had blueberry left. This place sucks. I've used them twice for custom cakes and they dropped the ball both times. Communication was chaotic and confusing. I was having to talk to multiple people and it was like playing a game of Telephone for the first cake. Second cake, the line work was so shaky and the design was splotchy. The letters for the "Happy Birthday" were different sizes and ran onto the border of the cake. I highly recommend seeking your baking needs elsewhere!! read more

Really cute bakery that I was happy to find after having a wonderful lunch up the road. It was exactly what I was looking for: a variety of sweets that looked so tastey that I didn't know what to get! There were cookies, bars, breads, and cakes all there to tempt me. This was a great find! All of the pastries were delicious...especially the cherry danish (which isn't pictured as we gobbled that up)! The turtle bar (top left) is gooey and delicious! I am upgrading my rating to five stars because I have come here a few more times since my last review and The Bake Shoppe has not disappointed me yet. When I visit Des Moines, I find myself craving the sweet goodies from this place. Since my last review I've tried their: peanut butter cookie-crisp on the outside, chewy on the inside (the way I like it!) boston creme cupcake- thin layer of chocolate on the top, cupcake filled with a light custard, and topped with a cherry (perfect for those that love chocolate but not too much of it)--the cake was very light (like angel cake but not overly sweet as angel cake can be) german chocolate cake- moist and chocolatey pumpkin bar--tastes like a pumpkin cake with the perfect amount of frosting on top And of course, time and time again, during each visit I HAVE to get their peanut butter rice crispy. It is still SUPER SUPER good!!! Prices for these goodies are usually $2 or less (unless you are ordering bread or a whole cake). The downside about The Bake Shoppe is that they close at 5pm. We arrived around 4:30pm and thats when a line started forming behind me! I think everyone else was trying to beat the closing time too! read more

Holy Moly, this place has some great pastries! They are in a little strip mall which is great for parking. They have an nice variety of sweet goods so good luck making a decision! We went a box of random selections and were not disappointed by any of our choices. The cinnamon roll had great flavor and the sticky bun was super sticky just like it should be. Flaky cream horn, apple almond pastry, and turtle bar. Mmmmmm For those that complain about the 4 pm close, don't forget about the 6:30 am open. This means they have to get to the shop around 4:30 am to get things baked by opening. Give them a break. A 12 hour day isn't exactly slacking off, especially when you're at it 7 days a week. Now I'm going to go relax on my weekend away from work and enjoy my sugar coma. read more

Walked in to grab some pastries and there was a lot of options! The staff was very friendly and the store was clean and tidy and has an old fashioned feel to it. Buyer beware. First, the person boxing the pastries coughed twice into the box of pastries we purchased. Of course she was not wearing a mask. We should have said "no thanks" at that juncture. Second, the sign indicated pastries were $3.00 each or $34 for a dozen. When the bill came it was $40.00 for the dozen pastries. When we inquired into the difference we showed her the sign and she made some kind of comment that she could understand where we might think the cost was $34. Evidently the $34/dozen is only if you get a dozen of the same type of pastries and not a combination. Now we are even debating if we should serve the pastries since she coughed into the box. Stopped in the day after Thanksgiving with a full stock of sweets even after the big holiday. We went with the petite fours, orange yum yum, pink champagne cake, and almond apple pastry. All was tasty but the petite fours, orange yum yum, and almond pastry was my favorite. Also the lady working was extremely generous and put in more than we asked for at no extra cost. We have been getting a champagne for Valentine's Day for 9 years! My parents got one from here when I was younger and mentioned it to my spouse and now it's something we get every year! We call a few days in advance to order it. They are always nice and polite. My spouse likes to personalize it by having them write me a message and they always manage to make it look nice! This is the smallest size. They do have cupcakes but we always order the cake. They also have heart shaped ones but they are bigger and this is a sweet cake! The frosting is sweet and the white cream is more whipped. It's always moist. I would highly recommend them. They have lots of other sweets and treats. read more

I was looking for a gourmet bakery that makes amazing cakes and this place came highly recommended among many Yelpers. The interior is well lit with tiled floors; and the large counter is stacked with colorful sweets and baked goods wide and high. On the first visit I ordered a 10-inch Red Velvet Cake ($38) for a Thanksgiving meal. The person who helped me at the register guaranteed that I would love this cake. I then proceeded to ask questions about the coloring and frosting, but she was not knowledgeable and couldn't give me the specifics about why this cake is so special. When I finally cut into the cake, the cake was dark brown with a light chocolate flavor. The frosting was too sugary and the cake lacked the buttermilk surge to accompany the refined cream cheese flavor. Too bad there are no 7-Eleven stores in Iowa or otherwise their red velvet cupcakes are way better than the ones here. I wanted to give them another chance so weeks later I returned to get their 8-inch Champaign Cake ($28) and an 8-inch German Chocolate Cake ($28). The pink-colored Champaign Cake was lighter, spongier, and had a decent flavor. I've had other cakes that are much more refined, and despite all the raving reviews I thought the flavors was over-hyped and lacked wow factor. It's probably their best cake, and it's one that I would recommend with so few options around the state. The German Chocolate Cake had a stronger chocolate flavor covered with buttery frosting and coconut shavings on top. Again, the flavor was pretty standard. The chocolate wasn't dark enough and the cake could carry a lot more moisture so it wouldn't be so flaky when I cut into it. The funny thing is that the helper made the same guarantee that I would love their cakes. Since she didn't know much about these cakes, it started to sound a bit disingenuous on my second visit. Interested customers can expect standard cakes, ordinary one-dimensional flavors, and frosting that are dense and often too sugary to bear. What led to this negative review had to do with their service. I called twice into the store to pre-order these cakes. On both occasions they insisted that I give them the exact time for the pick up. I thought such request was unreasonable since I was coming from more than 42 miles away. I was particularly upset when I told them that I would come at 2pm on Thanksgiving Day and only to have the young lady to respond in an abrupt, condescending tone, "but we open until 3pm!" I will admit: I was a little nervous about how my custom cake would turn out, since it was difficult to explain exactly what I wanted! But, it turned out perfect! It doesn't look tacky or cheap with the frosting, and the color is spot-on. I will be back for sure! I'm very sorry I can't speak to the taste since it was a smash cake for a One-Year old, but he seemed to love it just fine! WOW. We had their champagne cake at a bridal shower this weekend, and I couldn't believe how beautiful it was. When it was served, it looked even more gorgeous on the inside. We couldn't wait to try a bite, and it did NOT disappoint. It was hands down the BEST cake I have ever had. It was super moist and light, and the filling on the inside was luscious. They make bread, cupcakes, cookies, specialties on holidays, cakes to order and my personal fave... Fruit cheesecake. Stopped in the day before Easter. Wanted to get a coconut cream pie somewhere in town from a place other than Perkins or Village Inn. I stopped at a couple of other bakeries in town and they didn't have any pies. This was the last one I was going to stop at before just giving up. Place was a madhouse. Lots of boxes stacked up labeled with names of people that had reserved baked goods for Easter. I got in there and after nosing around noticed they also didn't have pies. Which I will say was a disappointment. Des Moines apparently needs a pie bakery in town like Kathy's Pies in Cedar Rapids but that's another story. Anyway, I was convinced at this time I wasn't going to leave without a dessert since I was responsible for bringing one to the family dinner. The desserts they did have on display looked fantastic. Lots of bigger cakes and finger cakes as well. They also had a large number of cookies available. I was looking at both the carrot and champagne cakes which were the biggest of the cakes. Both ranged in the $25 area. Maybe just a little too much outside of what I wanted to spend. I noticed a smaller (but still big enough) chocolate cake and that was priced at $17. So I went ahead and took one home. I can tell you it was a rousing success at the dinner the next day. Easily the first dessert to disappear. The cake was very moist and the frosting was light yet very rich at the same time. I was very satisfied with my purchase. If you are into cakes and cookies this place looks to be top notch. Still searching for a good place to get a pie that isn't a chain restaurant but I'm glad I discovered the Bake Shoppe. read more

We recently travelled through Iowa and had the privilege of trying cookies at the Bakke Shop. My and my husband's favorite cookies are molasses, and we both agree these are THE BEST MOLASSES COOKIES EVER! I will always compare any molasses cookie to the ones at the Bakke Shop, but I don't think any will ever compare. Let me try to describe them: No crisp edge, soft, but completely cooked through. The molasses and ginger ratio are perfect. Spicy without being overwhelming or underwhelming. We look forward to going back to Iowa someday to have more. The lucky people in the Des Moines area have the Bakke Shop right in their backyard. read more

I am a little jaded as I go out of my way to support businesses like this. However, this bakery has a bit of everything. Great dessert selection, decent bread selection, and a very nice and knowledgeable staff. This bakeries specialty is desserts and good ones. If you are looking to step it up a notch in the cupcake, sheet cake, or cookie department at your next function you should visit this bakery. The bread selection isn't what I was expecting, but they do have some knot bread, hamburger buns, and a few other items. The staff is great and the prices are fair.
