Top: Strawberry Flan Bottom: Bailey's Tres Leches (so yum)

Love, love, love Raquel's for their Tres Leches Cakes!! I've been coming here for years for their Tres Leches Cakes and I will continue to do so! It HAS been awhile since the last time I've been here due to Covid, but it's been like that for every other eating establishment for me. The service is always great here and the selection on single-serve cakes have vastly improved BUT make sure to get here a little early to grab a traditional Tres Leches with fruit. Pictures here is the "new-to-me" Bailey's Tres Leches Cake. Sorry, it's mostly eaten but it was so yummy! The Strawberry Flan was good too but I will always choose a Tres Leches cake over a Flan cake there. Their Tres Leches cakes aren't too sweet which is exactly how I like it. Make sure you try this place out for any of your celebration cakes! Their decorating for the cakes seems to have stepped up! But I never cared before because the cakes were delicious! Worth every Penny!! Btw, I heard the food was good too!

Not only do the cakes look great, they taste phenomenal. I could finish this whole cake myself. It's rich but light at the same time and not too sweet. We got a vanilla flan cake in the picture. Great service. This cake took less than a day to be ready.

    How are you feeling cupcake?

Trying to find good desserts is HELL Most are too sweet and caloric as WELL But I found the best, and I'll kiss and TELL Go and get a pastry from RAQUEL Better than Bruce Lee and Jackie CHAN Better than your weekend Spa PLAN Better than your secret lover MAN Come to Raquel, and try her FLAN! What to get: Flan, Tres Leches Cake, everything. What not to get: The Flan in the face, the flan in the face, the flan in the face. Owned by Raquel Welch, rather than Racquel Darrian (I know her from the old days), this is an absolutely delightful Mexican Bakery in the little Latin neighbourhood to the west of the Capitol in Des Moines, IA. Situated in a part of town with some really awesome Latin food, this is probably my favourite little spot in the area. It's named after - and run by - a wonderful woman making homemade cakes and Mexican desserts and doing them really really well. Especially the Flan, which she told me she is famous for - and oh my goodness it was amazing. They also have a wonderful tres leches cake, and everything in the place is basically delicious - especially if you already like Mexican desserts, because this place does them very very well. Des Moines has some real food gems and some nice surprises, and this little area - and in particular this little family-owned Homestyle Mexican bakery - is the absolute epitome of how underrated and great and diverse the Des Moines food scene can be if you know where to look. Speaking of knowing where to look, I'll PM you my number.

This is a beautiful way to experience authentic French baking right here in Des Moines. Nadia's…read moreFrench Bakery has become a beloved neighborhood staple, and one visit makes it clear why. Most of the time I was there, a line stretched all the way to the door -- a steady stream of people happily waiting to purchase their precious goods. And after one bite, it makes perfect sense. The beignets are tender, golden, and decadently filled -- I chose the Nutella and the tiramisu, and each one delivered a luscious center wrapped in a delicate, lightly crisp exterior. They're indulgent yet airy, rich yet balanced. The strawberry cream croissant was beautifully laminated, shattering gently with each bite to reveal silky cream and bright berry flavor between buttery layers. There's a precision and care in every pastry that makes the quality unmistakable. Having traveled extensively and tasted pastries in cities around the world, I can confidently say these stand among the finest. From the highly praised almond croissants to vibrant fruit tarts, elegant cakes, and standout walnut cinnamon rolls, everything reflects true craftsmanship. Ces pâtisseries sont fantastiques. The menu extends beyond sweets with freshly baked breads, savory quiche, satisfying sandwiches, smooth espresso, and thoughtful seasonal offerings. The space is spotless and welcoming, grounded in high-quality ingredients and genuine hospitality. The staff is gracious and attentive, making each visit feel warm and unhurried. Owner Nadia Ahissou began baking during the pandemic and has earned well-deserved local recognition for her success as a Black entrepreneur. She is often present, hands-on and focused, clearly invested in every detail. Her commitment to authentic French technique is evident in every bite. Des Moines is proud to have this charming treasure in its community.
