The Purveyor - Espresso Chocolate Chip Cookie

We wanted a lighter dinner today, since we have thanksgiving tomorrow. My mom is visiting from out…read moreof town, and we thought Purveyor would be a great pick. My husband loved his sandwich. My son lik3d his empanadas. My mom and I picked some tapas, and they were both good. However we were really disappointed by the tiniest tiniest little charcuterie. 30 bucks, and it said served 4 for snacking? There was a huge bag of random crackers that was a larger serving than the actual charcuterie. We were so peeved about this! The quality of the other food we ordered was great but definitely skip the charcuterie. And don't bank on more than 2 bites of food per person or everyone will be hungry and you'll end up eating costco corn dip and chips like us!

Other than the crowd caused by the Summer Stir though, we found this place to be quite unique and ended up staying for a bite to eat and a cookie. We saw a large pan of paella cooking outside on the sidewalk and saw the signs that Friday is their Summer Paella Night. Given how much we like paella, we ordered a serving. Unfortunately I didn't get a picture, but it was served in a cardboard box for carryout and tasted very good. I should point out that other orders in the restaurant were served on nice plates with silverware so the cardboard seemed unique to the paella and to go. After seeing the cookies in the display case by the front door, I couldn't leave without trying at least one of them. I ended up ordering an Espresso Chocolate Chip Cookie (see picture) and shared it with my wife. I'm a sucker for sweets...and when you combine espresso, chocolate and sea salt sprinkled on the top - you can't go wrong. It is delicious and I highly recommend that you stop by and try one yourself! If you found this review helpful, please show your appreciation with a Like or a Follow. Shaking Boba takes the GOLD for boba! Been to so many local…read moreboba cafes in Des Moines but Shaking Boba does it the best. I appreciate the different milk options for the milk teas. Very accommodating and food allergy safe cafe. We love all their milk and fruit teas with boba. And they have NEVER run out of boba when we've visited. Even at the end of the night right before closing. That speaks VOLUMES of their management. They have even served us 10 minutes before closing with my phone order to cure my boba addiction. Service is always friendly. The owner, Paray, is there sometimes and she makes our visits so pleasant. Cafe is easy to find on University, plenty of parking, and shop is always clean. Super cute decor with egg seats and booths. Seasonal decorations make this cafe super fun to visit all year long. I love how Shaking Boba loves their community. Sometimes they host special events. Highly recommend!! Don't go anywhere but Shaking Boba!!

It's tart and flavorful. It may be too sweet for some but you can adjust the sweetness percentage! The atmosphere is like a candy shop when you walk in. You can't really see the workers because there's a massive wall blocking you from them but they have a self ordering station at that wall. So if you're an introvert or would prefer not to talk to anyone this is a good place to get boba!

Interior was quite spacious and seems great for large parties. Can be a quiet dinner spot or a place to celebrate something. I walked in quite early for their dinner service and the servers were really helpful, even if one of them is a new one in training. She definitely tried her best and the main host was super sweet. Drink was strong and exactly the thing I wanted after work. Lamb shank meat was falling off the bone and the serving size was perfect. I wasn't too full or still hungry after having my meal, with the pita bread and dessert. The main host was nice after finding out I drove in from a separate area just to try their restaurant, so my dessert was on the house. There were some things about the dessert that didn't seem right, and I let them know. Even offered to give me a new dessert. I'm not in Iowa often for work, but if my work travels bring me back, I'd absolutely go back to Hoq for another meal. Thank you for a wonderful evening.

The prices are high and the portions are what you would expect with a fine dining experience (i.e., small), but the restaurant seems to cater to the foodie customer base who prioritize quality over quantity. Service was pleasant and the ambience was refined yet comfortable. The m reason I gave only four stars is because the dishes were not remarkable enough to bring me back. The only exception was the tomato bisque: probably the best I've ever had. We came for the restaurant week menu, so I'm not sure how often that item is available.
