Who would have thought this Sweet Gem was here in Des Moines Iowa! What a great find! Actually introduced to me by an actual Iowa relative who used to send these gorgeous morsels to my Mother in Minnesota! I remember just how wonderful the quality of Chocolate was and the fillings made with real cream and butter. Just ordered some for my sister in Illinois and I was so hoping that it was as I remembered it. The Website was done beautifully. So it was easy to pick out some great confections for a gift. Chocolaterie Stam is a Dutch chocolate shop and bakery that has been in the Des Moines area for many years. They were originally founded in the Netherlands in 1913, and pride themselves on fine european chocolates and sweets. The store itself was quite barren, but then again, it was 11:00 on a Friday morning. The gelato counter featured 10 flavors, I would have liked to see more variety. The prices are quite reasonable for a gelato shop, 3.95 for a small and 4.5 for a medium. I got a half-and-half of Creme Brûlée and Key Lime Pie. The Creme Brûlée was too caramel-y and not enough cream for my tastes, but the Key Lime Pie was excellent. Jordan got Red Velvet and Creme Brûlée, which he enjoyed. The fun part of this experience was this giveaway they were doing. You spin a giant wheel, and if you land on one of three spots, you win a new dessert they were testing: the "ijs Tosti," or "Ice Toasty." The employee described it as a warm toasty bread with cool gelato in the middle, a mix of sensations that was supposed to be delicious. Instead, it ended up tasting like someone put a scoop of chocolate ice cream on a bland dinner roll. It was a terrible combination of textures, temperatures, and flavors. I'm glad this was a test dessert, Chocolaterie Stam should not be selling it. Stick to chocolates! Overall, this was okay. The store atmosphere is very cute and historical looking, but the gelato itself is pretty average. The ice toasty was an innovation gone wrong, 0/10, would not recommend. read more

My boyfriend and I were walking along Ingersoll to get some dinner when we passed by this place and decided to check it out since I've been on a chocolate kick. I told the lady that I really liked the combination of sweet and salty flavors. She had me try a piece of salted caramel covered in chocolate. It was smooth with a perfect balance of flavors. I got half a pound for a little over $6. She then brought out a tray that had multiple pieces of chocolate. I thought it was awesome that one of them was the creme brulee chocolate since that was what I'd been initially eyeing. I assumed she'd cut up a piece of it to give to me, but she gave me the whole thing! Great considering I was able to try a $1.50 piece of chocolate for free. If you're a fan of white chocolate, you'll love the creme brulee. She explained that the pieces of chocolate laid out in their middle display were $1.50 per piece; however, after the fifth piece, they price by weight instead which can save you a little money. By no means am I a chocolate connoisseur; however, I feel like Chocolaterie Stam is comparable to Godiva with the former having exceptional service. I live by a chocolate shop!! Be jealous. Not only do they have massive amounts of chocolate. They have gelato! (Creme brulee gelato is divine.) So far I've tried several little awesome chocolates. My favorite has been the cognac. What can I say, I like manly cocktails and chocolates, I guess. The center was like boozy butter, so creamy and luscious. Not only are the chocolates very high quality, they are pretty, too. And yeah, you do pay a premium price for these little chocolates, but it's so worth it. Or maybe you want to mix and match - a scoop of dark chocolate and a scoop of raspberry perhaps? Too cold for ice cream? Then pick up a few selections from their fine chocolates. So many amazing choices! We polished our palates with a nice cup of espresso. The prices aren't cheap, but this is luxury chocolate here. I found it quite reasonable for the quality. I have stopped by this quaint chocolate shop on multiple occasions. A friend of mine had a get together here in the summer on the patio. There was live music and the atmosphere was really pretty, almost as if we were not in Des Moines. I tried their cheese sampler with a glass of wine, overall nothing special beyond the experience. Yet, there gelato is a really tasty treat in the summer. I don't know how often they switch up the flavors, but I am always welcomed with 2 new options. I have tried the chocolate, coconut, grapefruit, tiramisu, berry, cheesecake, and rose gelato flavors. They were really tasty and a small cup can go a long way, since the consistency is different from ice cream. I have also tried their hot chocolate in the winter. Nothing special, but it hit the spot. You can get coffee or tea to go along with some European chocolate. I like that every piece of chocolate is handmade in the store. For Iowa, this is a top of the line treat shop. Very quaint, a few sets of bistro tables, gift shop shabby type decor, a counter of sweet gelato on one side (I adore the Creme Brule), on the left side; counters of so many chocolate confections to choose from....dark to creamy, melt in your mouth white. These have got to me among the worlds greatest chocolatiers!!! I used to think Sea's was good....til I tempted my tastebuds with Stam. l believe, if I remember right, there are only a few Stam stores in the US, it is either true Belgian or Swiss chocalate (their recipe). Two days ago I looked up Chocolaterie stores in Des Moines and found this one that's really close to downtown Des Moines. So I already had the plan to pick up some Chocolate Covered Cherries for my fiance as it was our anniversary and they are his absolute favorite. Everything went smooth with picking them up and when I presented them to my fiance he had one and didn't really say anything and just said they were okay. So I had one myself and they were they worst Chocolate Covered Cherries I had ever had. He then agreed, but said he didn't want to say anything to make me feel bad. I was upset because not only had I paid $12 for half of a pound(or 10 little candies) but it was just disappointing to have one of my gifts on our special day be so gross! So the next day I went back in to see if I could switch them out with the fresh Chocolate Covered Cherries. Nope. Nothing. The manager said because the candy had left the store, he couldn't do anything with them and wouldn't be able to offer me anything. He said he would be happy to help me get another kind of product, for the additional charge. It was just so frustrating because I am not the kind of person to expect anything for free and I was bringing in the WHOLE BOX of the ones I had purchased minus the two we had tried. He didn't even try them to see if something had gone wrong with that batch. I will not shop there again just on the sheer principal that they have awful customer service. I went home and threw them straight in the garbage. Learned a good lesson though, try it before you buy it especially with those kind of prices! read more
