For under $5 you can get a hamburger, cheeseburger, and I think even a double cheeseburger might still be under $5 here. Since it was under renovation, we would constantly check back/drive past the establishment to see if they opened back up. So glad that they finally did! Cheapest impossible burger in town. Good fries. Lots of outdoor seating. What's not to like?

I've been to this place a handful of times, each time thinking it may be better. But no, each time ended up with me not eating half my food. I've always purchased the cheeseburger, fries, and a milkshake. Maybe that's my problem right there... maybe I should try the chicken patty or the chili cheese fries... Anyway, the patty is super thin, thinner than a Mickey D's patty, and smothered with ketchup and mustard. So much so, that all I end up tasting is the char of the burger and mustard. The fries are okay, but not in any way worth the money or the calories. They're very bland and taste like grease. The milkshakes are okay, but they're milkshakes. How can you possibly make ice cream taste bad? I've always had the blackberry one. I'm interested to try the pineapple and black raspberry ones, but I most likely never will since the food isn't all that great. First off, we've always loved the food. The burgers and dogs are always tasty. I just tried the fish sandwich and that was good, also. However, something is wrong with the online ordering process. The last two times that we've ordered food online, the orders came out wrong. It may be that the special order instructions don't get printed out on their end. Either that or they can't follow the instructions on the order. One of the mistakes was that we ordered a lettuce wrap (per their previous instructions on ordering a hamburger with no bun). I specifically said "it's a lettuce wrap so no bun" but, unfortunately, we got just a regular bunned hamburger with no lettuce. We ordered French fries, extra crispy with no salt, and we received regular fries (soggy) WITH salt. I'm not sure why I never ate here before. The Smokehouse is housed in a traditional roadside Americana burger building that I find appealing. With time to kill before the dentist office opened across the street it just seemed like the perfect time to have a flamed cooked cheeseburger. This is a cash only restaurant. The food is cooked when you order and the bun is toasted. Mustard, relish, catsup and maybe onions are included for well under $4.00. If you want mayo, lettuce and tomatoes it is a bit more. I went all out and had the deluxe cheeseburger and even added grilled onions. The patty is on the small, thin side and it was a bit well done. However, it wasn't bad. I'm not sure I would go out of my way to have another one. But then again, I get very hungry anytime I go to the dentist. I enjoyed the burger building; it was like a trip back in time. Smokehouse is a Berkeley icon serving simple, unpretentious charbroiled burgers since 1951. No aioli, no bizarre trendy pretzel buns, no avocado or arugula - just a traditional solid burger. We lost her for a while due to fire but she's back and they didn't go on some vision quest trying to up the game. The game was already great. I posted on Facebook that they had re-opened and had 1600 likes in one hour. That is what this place means to people who grew up in the area. Get a double cheeseburger, fries and a coke or shake in one of the many flavors they offer. You're done. You'll be happy. You'll come back. They have an Impossible Burger as well. Fries are still the best in town, but burgers are unpredictable. Either overcooked or wrong toppings. Twice the chili cheese dogs were cold on the inside. For the long waits the food should be consistently worth the wait and it's not. Our family used to go all the time before they closed, since reopening we have patronized a few times, each time hoping for the Smokehouse we loved before. The Smokehouse! My oh my, I can't believe it actually took me three years of living in Berkeley (and like 20 living in the area) for me to actually try this place. I have to say, I was largely unimpressed by the food Smokehouse has to offer, but I gotta love this place. It's got character. Its a late night and all-time staple for the natives, super cheap, and has some badass hardworking lady-bosses working there and running it. Definitely got some love in my heart for that. However, my burger was a bit over cooked and just tasted okay. I will say, I recently started a Keto diet, so I was unable to try the fries or shake, and I believe that there is some redemption to be had there. I will revisit this review once I have the opportunity to try them! Overall, 2.5-3 stars for my burger, 4-5 stars for the service, and 5 for the charm. read more

Went in on Easter Sunday,because Barneys on College was closed for the holiday. Had the double cheesburger,order of fries,black cherry shake & the girls had a grilled cheese(on hamburger bun) & a double cheese dog.($22.63 total bill) Pretty good greasy cheesbuger,excellent fries & the shakes & dog were alright also. My wife has been coming here for twenty years & says it hasnt changed much. The 1st shake we received had the wrong flavor,but they made it good with a fresh one. I've been to the Smokehouse a number of times but they've earned "The Class Act Award" today. I'd just come from the St. Patrick Day Parade and decided on a burger at the Smokehouse. Now the Smokehouse doesn't make the worst nor the best burger. I figured I would eat the burger in the car since it was cold and rainy. Do you know the folks at the Smokehouse had two space heaters in the eating area, a total surprise. I just never expected heat for the customers. I appreciate the late hours, and their food is pretty good for its price point, though I'd recommend for a burger the double cheeseburger vs single as the buns here are pretty thick in comparison to the meat. BOYSENBERRY MILKSHAKE YUM! Why are boysenberry things so rare here? Anyway, my favorite thing on the menu is the boysenberry shake, which is absolutely delicious and definitely tastes like the real thing! I love milkshakes with my burgers, which are really cheap here. I think the double cheeseburger is only $4.50! Not bad at all. The only thing with the Smokehouse and a la carte restaurants like it is that your bill will still add up. I always notice that when I'm at these place because you have to pay separately for the burger, the fries/onion rings and the shake, which is fine and still not expensive, just not what you'd think after looking at the menu board initially. Glad to see the whole team plus extras back in the house. I am sorry to say the new system is flawed. The disconnect between ordering, food prep and pick up mean I have gotten the wrong condiments and veg on my burger EVERY TIME (tonight was the 3rd and last try) I have paid for extra cheese and never gotten it. The pick up window told me they couldn't confirm my order "because they didn't make it" he checked- but when I got home nope it was wrong again- and even more exciting- a standard veg set up... not what I ordered.
