This place was a decent spot for fast food - definitely a step up from the chains. Reasonably good food, low prices, and fast (but not very friendly) service. The burgers are good, but be careful - if you say you want "everything on it," that will include a ton of mustard, which my husband and I both found overpowering and odd on our respective burgers. My husband's hot dog was decent. We also shared the chili fries, which were pretty good. The girl at the counter was very efficient and competent, but not at all warm and friendly. I've been a die hard smokehouse fan for years, but I'm sadly so disappointed in the switch they made with their buns recently. The burger used to be on a nice, sturdy, sesame seed bun which was perfect for this old school style burger. Now the new brioche style bun they use is too small for the burger, disintegrates easily, and I haven't been able to eat a burger without 50% of it spilling out. I would have given one star but I can't do that to smokehouse. However, I don't think I'll ever come back for a burger now, the bun switch was the nail in the coffin for me read more

Postmated this a few days ago with a friend late at night to mull us over a project. While it took postmate a while to deliver it to us, it was not enough to get over the verdict that mostly everything was meh... Its not the best burger I have ever had and it is certainly not the worst. The fries were fat and dry giving a more starchy taste than one would want to compliment their burger. I would have to say the jalapeños used for the burger was definitely a pleasant surprise. Most of the time you order jalapeños, it is highly pickled and almost sweet, but these jalapeños definitely added the kick I was looking for. I will try to come by and order in person as I suspect the burger would taste better fresh off the grill and in person. Until then, this is a decent place to get your fix, but it is not a place to go out of the way to visit. read more

This is our go-to local burger place. Been around since before most of us were born. The food is all solid, but the fries are the real draw. They did a major remodel a while back, and when they reopened there was a sense of dread that the fries would be different. But they're just as good as always. Classic. Can't believe I never wrote a review for this spot. This used to be special treat place back in my college days. I'd get a burger and the chili cheese fries. The burgers were always decent and I really like the chili cheese fries - it's really hard not to like chili cheese fries. I ended up coming here often a while a go when I had to spend a lot of time at Alta Bates. Things were pretty much the same as I remembered. Outside seating and the wait was never too long. Nothing super special here but an overall solid spot to get a burger, fries, and a shake. read more

Milkshakes are fantastic and the regular is a perfect size. The hotdog was mediocre, bun was tough. Fries were mushy but I've been before where they were crispy and perfect. Sort of hit or miss. Only $11 for milkshake, fries and hotdog. Pretty good deal for this neighborhood. read more

I was obsessed with the Smokehouse for many years, but I think after tonight we're breaking up. I am old enough to remember the days when you walked up to the window, the owner took your order and 10 minutes or so later you had a hot delicious burger. Tonight I ordered pickup on Grubhub, was told it would be ready at 5:20, then stood near the window from 5:20 - 5:50 trying to convince someone to give me my burger. Clearly something had gone wrong with my order, no big deal that happens, but THERE WAS NOONE there who cared enough to fix it. The woman behind the counter would just say "it's coming up" and then run away, until it was clear that it was NEVER coming up. I was on the verge of Karen-ing out trying to get the food I paid for, and too hungry to figure out how to make that happen without crying. Another customer (tall and male -- I guess that helped?) was kind enough to step in, and he basically ordered them to give me some food before they gave him his food, so they did. I got an ice-cold burger with a dry bun (clearly something that had been abandoned somewhere). Shoutout to that guy but WTF Smokehouse? Thank god Phila Burger in Richmond exists -- I'll go there instead for great burgers (and no apps -- just walk up and wait 10 minutes). read more

Good burgers, but my problem with this place is that they NEVER have my order ready when I call it in ahead of time. I'll call to place an order for pickup, then they tell me it'll be ready in 10-15 minutes. So I show up to pick up my food, and THEN they send the order to the kitchen after I pay in person. So then I end up waiting 20-30 minutes for my food to be ready. Happens every time. If I'm calling ahead of time, it's because I don't have time to wait! Customers should be able to place pickup orders that are ready to go in the time frame provided. read more

We loved this place. I used to take my mother there often before she passed away in 2017. She liked it because it felt like home: handmade and fresh food how you prefer it, per order. She was from the Mid-West, and didn't appreciate California all that much. The prices were fantastic, and we could take our dog to sit outside. We're mourning the loss of the Smokehouse and hope it will come back. It was a star for Berkeley, and I hope their onerous permitting process doesn't hold it back from coming back. Yup, this place still has the best burgers around. Been coming here off and on for years, even after moving away. Pros: love the smoked charbroiled flavor. Prices are excellent, $3.30(ish) for the hamburger. Some suggest the double (a dollar more) since the bun is bigger than norm and the patty is on the thinner side. With the order of fries they are thicker than most places, which I like. You also get a nice sized serving of fries too. Cons: confirm your order. I would slip the milk shake here, too sweet and artificial flavor tasting. Better than In and Out, The Habit, Five Guys. read more

I've been coming here since I was a child and have seen smokehouse under three wieners. Since I could do nothing more than skateboard until I was dripping sweat. Now I bring my wife and drive way out of my way to come here before any other burger places. Only thing holding me back from making my standard double cheese burger and fries a five star favorite is the consistency of the service and sometimes snappy attitude of the workers. The food is almost always exactly correct and usually satiates all cravings, but there can be that day or two where they're just off... They need to abide by the current shelter in place orders. People wait inside their facility and are eating in their open area outside (and not wearing masks). This isn't fair to other restaurants that are only doing take-out and had to close their parklets. It is also unsafe. They need to better manage their business for the safety of their customers and neighbors. read more

My friend abruptly dropped me off here after I told him I did not want to go get Poki with him. It took me only a few minutes to pick what I wanted. For any burger stand, it is a MUST to order a basic cheeseburger before trying anything else. I also added on some chili fries because. Just because :). I was really surprised to find that both items tasted really good considering their nutritional value. While it may not b e the healthiest, it sure saves you some bucks. I had been craving a Smokehouse Cheeseburger all day yesterday. I ordered a double-cheese burger, fries and dairy free milkshake. I was VERY DISAPPOINTED in the double cheese burger. The meat was dry as it could have been, bun was hard . It did not have the grilled onions on it that I asked the cashier for. The burger was terrible!!! The fries and shake were very good. I came here today for lunch and these guys are awesome! Super good food. It wasn't rushed to get out to deliver and it wasn't a long wait either. Everyone in the restaurant was eagerly working to serve their clients. The vibe is chill. It's very inviting for family and friends and I even got to meet one of the owners. He was actively involved in making sure everyone was satisfied. That's always a plus when you see that! It's hard to make things work during times like these, and they're making it work here! While the food has been good for the 60 years I've been coming here, I've become disappointed in their ability to keep the soft drink machine working on a regular basis. Also, the food seems to be suffering from a slap/dash method of construction. My hot dog had barely any catsup and almost no mustard on it. The french fries vary widely in quality/preparation. When I ordered my burger last night, I got a friendly, "lettuce, onion and tomato on that?" "Yes please!" And then they took my money. What they didn't tell me was that lettuce costs 60 cents. Lettuce? Really? If I had known that, I would have brought my own 2-cent lettuce from Berkeley Bowl (see previous reviews). The worst part is that they're trying to be all deceptive about it. I ordered a cheeseburger online along with a chili cheese fries. They completely forgot to put the burger patty on there so I was left with a bun and a bunch of toppings (most of which I'd asked to be taken off anyway). I enjoyed the chili cheese fries - similar to something you'd get at a stadium, hits the spot if you're left hungry due to your lack of cheeseburger. It's just a damn good cheeseburger dripping with special sauce and accented by a toasty bun. The fries are good, too. And it's open late, which makes it a great drunk munchies option.
