I randomly stopped in at Smokehouse after going to an exhibit at the UC Berkeley Museum on campus earlier this week. It did not disappoint! I had the double burger and fries. There was a line of 6 when I got there but it moved swiftly and I received my order less than 10 minutes after I arrived. The burger was juicy and delicious plus you could taste the smoke flavor and the fries were thick and appropriately salty. I would highly recommend to anyone who is a burger fan. read more

I've been meaning to try this place for over a decade and never got around to it. Then a few years back it caught on fire if I recall correctly so my hopes were then shattered because I'd always smell a pleasant aroma the few times that I passed by before. I was working around the corner and saw people eating outside. It felt like an old friend was back from the dead and I was excited. The first thing I noticed from the menu were the prices. Relatively cheap so I figured id go with a double just in case they were small. I got a double cheeseburger, chili cheese fries and a drink for like 12 bucks. Even without quality I feel that's getting away cheap but in this case the quality was through the roof. Definitely lived up to my expectations. They have outdoor seating available which I took advantage of, having a pleasant experience. The young lady at the register was nice and professional. I wish I could say the same for the young dude at the pickup window. Not gonna complain, just a mention. Overall I wouldn't just recommend this establishment, I urge that you go here and find out for yourself. One of the few places that survived the times and even a fire. My friends and I recently went to Smokehouse for milkshakes and unfortunately, the experience was subpar. Upon arrival, we gave our orders and then were given buzzers to notify us when our food was ready. The problem, however, was that the buzzers did not work. Everyone seemed to realize this at the same time and then swarmed the counter trying to get their orders, but the employees were not forthcoming with them. By the time we got our milkshakes, they were not cold at all. Additionally, there was a rather bizarre situation where the bathroom door didn't lock and an employee walked in on a customer in the bathroom, and then the employee got very mad and started yelling at the customer and kicking the door. It was very very uncomfortable, as the man in the bathroom did nothing wrong. My friend spoke up that she had experienced the inability to lock the bathroom door as well and that was when the employee finally calmed down. I will go back to Smokehouse but I do hope it is a better experience. Gotta say, they make a bomb banana milkshake, even when it's kind of warm. read more

If you want to get the most out of your money, this place has some of the best value. They have cheap and delicious burgers, giant portion sizes of fries, and smooth and decadent shakes. Everything is cooked fresh and tastes way better than any fast food. I got the double chili cheeseburger and was surprised at the quality considering that it was only $5. The meat patties were thin but still juicy and the chili was rich and gave the burger a great flavor. The fries were also fantastic, crispy on the outside but starchy and soft on the inside. For about $3, they give you a giant bag of these fries which is a great deal. I also really liked the shakes. They had so many flavors of shakes and I decided to get boysenberry because I've never had a boysenberry shake. It tasted mainly like vanilla, but there was a faint fruity taste like raspberries. Delicious food at a low price is something that's hard to come by in Berkeley. As a poor college student, I'll be sure to come back to this place. read more

They're back! I have been going to this place since I was a kid. This place is an Oakland/Berkeley institution( it is located right by the city borders). And if you know about this place, you would know it's back based on the smell. They cook their burgers with charcoal on the grill and that's what separates this place from other burger spots. I also believe their chili is exceptional and I have been craving a burger and chili fries from this place for the longest. It's a nice yard with lots of tables, so we picked on in the shade near the sidewalk. The only problem with our table is that it's also near a very busy Telegraph Street. No clean indoor dining where the waitress takes your order and brings the food out after 10 minutes. No, you sit at a barstool looking out over either the hidden lawn or Telegraph Avenue, or at a picnic table either inside or outside. The food selection is large, even fish burgers. And at surprisingly low prices. You'd think you're in Grand Island, Nebraska, but you're actually in Berkeley. For $11, I had a double cheeseburger, chili cheese fries, and a medium Coke. The Coke was probably 24 ounces. The fries were mushy, and no fork was available, so it was a little hard to eat and keep the fingers clean. Such a good burger, though. Probably half a pound of well-done beef, two patties and two slices of cheese, along with onions, tomatoes, lettuce, and relish, in a truly delicious package of toasted buns. My family once ate at Everett & Jones on San Pablo, which has a similar layout, and the Smokehouse beats E&J overall. It's not among the Top 10 in Berkeley. We've been coming here for 10 years and the dude handing people their food at the counter is seriously shit at his job. He's uncommunicative, makes people wait at the window for extended periods before acknowledging them there at all, ignores their questions so people have to repeat themselves multiple, and generally doesn't care about actually helping people have a good experience. I have literally been a patron of The Smokehouse since I was three years old, 52 years ago. My siblings and I used to climb through what must have been a very small hole in the back wall of the building and run around to the front to start all over again, over and over while waiting for our order. It was relatively stable for the first half of my life or so and then changed hands a few times, more frequently in the last two decades, and has had its ups and downs. "Happy place"is "happy place" so my denial has been steadfast to make it so during those downturns to convince me things were still top-notch long enough to bring back memories. But over the last several years, it's just a bad, bad, relationship it's not the smokehouse anymore. It's really awful food and terrible service using the name to make money and go from bad to worse, especially after the fire. The signature drink since I was a toddler, that used to be found only at The Smokehouse and mentally inseparable, the orange freeze, is even finally gone and replaced by several exotic dairies and non-dairy shakes. I have tried to try them but I have only had one order delivered correctly, with no hyperbole, in the last five years, and it's impossible to review a shake fairly when I don't know what it is. For instance, the mango shake I'm looking at now must be non-dairy because it is obviously a standard dairy cookie-ish flavor that is watery with bland crumb things in it. If there is an opposite to a mango shake, this is it. I won't drink it. I thought chili fries would be safe and nobody else close was open. I was wrong. I won't eat them. I tried. If the point of food is to lose your appetite, mission accomplished. The silver lining is this. It is too late and I am too tired to go out again and there is nothing left in the house or I never would have gone to The Smokehouse to begin with. It is four blocks away. The impossible burger you've been looking for is here; although, like anywhere else, it would be really nice to see it be closer to the price of beef. Very consistent satisfactory experiences, maybe some of them 4 stars but it evens out. It's a very simple order-and-get-a-transponder kind of setup. No one's been rude to me here, in three years of frequenting, that's kind of incredible. Ever since they have re-opened after the fire that shut them down - I have noticed constant updates week-by-week to the food, exterior, decorations, processes, and overall vibe of the place. An example of this is that once impossible burgers became a thing, I was pleasantly surprised to find Smokehouse had the option as well as offering the burger at by far the most reasonable price you can find. Other places in the area will charge you $15 for a single impossible burger but at Smokehouse I spent $10 and got a loaded-up impossible burger and fries! Throw in a few more bulks and splurge on a non-dairy Oreo Oatly shake and you'll have an incredible afternoon. About a week ago I noticed they swapped to a new bun type and it has really elevated the quality and flavor of the burger. However, the reason I'm writing this review is because of an incident I witnessed earlier today. An older woman was paying for her food at the front of the line and apparently she didn't get her six cents in change back. You heard me. Six cents. Please keep this amount in mind. The young man taking the orders said she could put it in the tip can if she liked and she proceeded to throw a full on tantrum. She screamed that she had never tipped anyone who asked for it and wanted her six cents back immediately. The cashier handed it to her and calmly tried to explain that he didn't mean anything negative by it but some other customers had tipped their extra change in the past. She yelled: "Do you know who I am?!" and listed her whole name: first, middle, and last. (News flash lady, none of us care.) Then she continued her tirade by saying that she didn't care about other people, SHE had NEVER in her life tipped anyone who asked for it and that he hadn't provided her any service and that she couldn't believe he was talking back to her when he was her grandchildren's age. Again, he was very calm and professional and calmly asked her to please refrain from being so aggressive. (He was sitting on a chair with the cash register outside and she was getting in his face.) Now, the rest of us are waiting in line to order the entire time she's behaving like this and there are also families with small children waiting. Completely embarrassing behavior for a grandmother and nothing little children need to be exposed to. She finally moves away and the line moves along. You'd think she would be done, but no. While waiting for our food orders to be done, she and the gentleman she was with managed to knock over their soda at the fountain ALL over the floor of the restaurant. (Guess whose job it is to clean up after you, lady?) Then when her order is ready she complained that she was not asked whether she wanted to take it to go or to eat there and did not want it in a to go bag. The worker explained to her that all the orders were packed to go, even for people dining in, and she yelled that she wanted to speak with a manager. The manager was not available but she kept demanding to talk to this poor kid's boss because she wanted to complain about the cashier. Over SIX CENTS. She wanted to get someone likely working for minimum wage in trouble or even fired because she decided to hold up the line for five minutes in order to behave like a spoiled toddler. She even said: "Oh, I knew what I was dealing with before I even got in line" about the cashier so she clearly was planning on being difficult from the get go. Eventually she said she would find the number on Google and call. All I can say is if you are spending this much time and energy on SIX pennies, maybe don't eat out. Just spare us all the negative energy, please. I wanted to have a nice quick meal and instead have been bothered about this interaction for about two hours, so good job, you've ruined another person's evening. Anyway, Smokehouse, if some woman (with the initials KAT) calls to complain about the workers, I saw the whole thing and can attest that everyone was professional and did a good job. I had really high hopes for this place! We first sat inside but kept smelling the bathroom so we took our food outside to the benches. I got the fish burger and a double cheese burger, with fries, and a taro shake. The burger was pretty wet and all the chopped lettuce made it so difficult to hold. On both burgers, they've left out things we wanted, and included things we requested them to omit. The burger was soggy, not that flavorful, and not hot. The fries were pretty dry and were room temperature when we got them. The taro shake had these red and blue colors in them, not sure what it was but it wasn't very heavy in taro flavor.
