    Turkey Sandwich
    Steve H.

I don't hand out five-star reviews often but this place was so good I couldn't find a reason to deduct a star. For the past couple of years, I've been on the search for the best BBQ in the Cleveland area. See my other reviews for my thoughts on Mabels, Smokin' BBQ, Woodstock, Landmark, and some others. My search might be over. To date, Smokehouse 91 is the absolute best BBQ in Cleveland, but it's not perfect. It's located in a small strip mall on Route 91. The parking lot was full and very difficult to find a spot. In fact, my wife almost got hit by an Amazon driver pulling in and another driver backing out--so be careful! Outside of that...Smokehouse 91 knocks it out of the park. The service is great and set-up the way a BBQ joint should be. Pick your meats...add your sides...hit the sauce station...and then eat. As always, I try to sample as many meats as I can during my BBQ visits, and today my party had a turkey sandwich, baby back ribs, smoked turkey, sliced brisket (fatty), a smoked poblano pepper sausage, and the star of the show--a beef short rib. Our sides included macaroni and cheese and the collard greens. You also get a small sampling of cole slaw pickles, and white bread with your meats. I'll start with the sides, because as I've said in my other BBQ reviews, if the restaurant puts the time in to make quality sides, then their meat is usually fantastic. My daughter and I both gave the mac-and-cheese five stars out of five. "It was so creamy, powerful, and it had the right texture," according to my daughter. I'm a huge fan of collard greens but every BBQ restaurant in Cleveland has let me down. Smokehouse 91 came up with an excellent collard green, filled with meat and just the right spicing. Five stars. The cole slaw gets four stars. It hits the right texture--I like mine a bit runny--but was a bit off on the flavor. Now for the meats: Brisket This is hands down the best brisket in the Cleveland area. It could use a bit more pepper--again, I inject my personal preferences--but it had a great looking bark and held up to the bend test. I read one review that stated the brisket didn't have a smoke ring. My brisket certainly did...not that it matters outside of appearance. The brisket was the first thing I saw when I walked in the door, and I immediately could tell this place was going to be legit. Five stars. Turkey The turkey had a great flavor profile along with being very moist. "It's the best I've had" said my wife. "It was really juicy and had a nice flavor." Five stars. Poblano Pepper Sausage Where is the eye-popping emoji when you need it? The sausage was pulled out of a vat of juice. My first thought was the sausage would be waterlogged...and it was, to a point. Much to my surprise, it worked well. Every bite included a splash of that poblano pepper juice and it was fantastic. Five stars. Baby Back Ribs I saved the ribs for last because it was the only part of the meal that isn't getting five stars. The ribs had a softer texture than I like and the flavor was off a bit (I didn't add any extra sauce). I'd have liked to see a bit more bark as well as a stickier texture, but that doesn't mean we didn't like the ribs. I'd certainly order them again (and spoiler, I will!). Three stars. Overall, our visit to Smokehouse 91 went very well--and there's a bonus butcher shop next door. There are only about four square tables and three high tops inside, so seating is very limited. I think that's going to become a problem as word spreads about this place. We already know the parking lot is an issue, but don't let that deter you from giving this spot a try. I think you'll become a regular.

Excellent dinner this evening. People were very friendly, patient as we browsed the menu board, and answered questions. Format is order at the counter with a few tables and some high counter space. Very clean. The brisket sandwich with slaw and pickles was amazing. Great flavor and very fresh. Pulled pork was good as well. Both were overstuffed. Any meat that fell out of the sandwich allowed me to use sampling the BBQ sauce bar which had many great options. The Mac and cheese was very good . Cornbread had great flavor and tasted fresh. Overall a great meal and worth a stop if you enjoy barbecue.

I got some lean brisket, smoke turkey and greens with pulled pork. Food was good as always no complaints from me. They are very nice and clean. Change gloves a lot . Was very helpful and patient it was an older lady in front of me and she was on the phone and they worked with her to find something she would like like.

This was worth the five and a half hour drive from Indy. It started with outstanding customer service and ended with the best bbq I've ever had in my life! The ribs were competition worthy. The brisket was the most perfect brisket ever made. The turkey was so good that I almost didn't believe it was turkey. The Mac and cheese was amazing. If you live in Cleveland and you like BBQ, I don't know why you'd eat anywhere other than Smokehouse 91. It's smoked perfection!

You can tell it's going to be good BBQ when right when you open the door it smells awesome and service was very nice and very cool that they slice the meat right in front of you when you order. The lean brisket was amazing, super lean, tender, great smoke ring, and awesome flavor. The coleslaw was very good, and nice that they give pickles and two pieces of white bread on the side. The BBQ sauce bar that you can take cups of is very nice and the Texas style and Sweet BBQ sauces were my favorite and the Carolina style vinegar was awesome too. Didn't get any desserts but they looked amazing. Definitely will be back.

Well smoked brisket and ribs. Sides too salty. Get the fatty brisket as lean was too dry.

He said the special was chicken parmigiana so I thought I'd try it. He brought us a very nice bread with a tasty butter and olive oil mix. I ordered the chopped salad that I absolutely loved! There were lives of cauliflower, different types of olives and a pickled red onion that wasn't over bearingly strong. The chicken parmigiana was tasty. Two patties if chicken over fettuccini. I noticed on the way out that eggplant parmigiana was also a special. I might've had that if I'd known. I will definitely come back on a Tuesday to try the eggplant. I might also come back to try their pizza. Nice place. Give it a try!!!

If you didn't know better and walked in the first time, you'd say, "This looks like a BBQ spot!" Of course, it was. Hanging a few doilies and Italian aperitif posters doesn't help. The delicate and frankly, pretty dishes are disconcerting against the rough and tumble tables and chairs place you in the wrong mindset. It just doesn't work. My Bolognese Cavatelli was very good, but my wife felt the Eggplant Parmigiana was simply a cheesy clump, the skin tough and stringy. An excellent bread service goes in the win column. Unfortunately, this was like eating quenelles and lobster on a paper plate washed down with Champagne in a plastic flute.

We were seated at our table and waited 25 minutes for wait staff to take our drink order. Another 20-minute wait to put in our dinner order. My salad had a lot of old lettuce and was not so great. Another 25 minutes went by and we got our meals. My sandwich was cold in the middle and the smash potatoes were tasteless. The other salad also had similar issues. The server had many excuses for the lack of entrees available and the slow service such as how busy the kitchen was, etc. Will not be going back. Sam B.

The lady who took my order was very nice and personable. I ordered one of my favorite dishes of all time - a Po' Boy (with spicy BBQ sauce). A regular side with the Po' Boy is offered at $1.00. So I jumped at the chance to try the mac n cheese. The order came up pretty fast. I went to the liquor store for a Snapple a couple businesses away and by the time I walked back to my car, my order was done. So about 5-7 minutes. The Po' Boy came in a little to-go box. I let out a Darth Vader, "NOOOOOOOO!" when I saw the size. Luckily, It was nom nomz. Also, something to note here, the sauce was not spicy at all (but it was yummy). The slaw that was piled on, along with the fries and BBQ sauce, was delicious. Thumbs up! Now, the mac n cheese was a tad bit disappointing. It could have used some, how do you say, STANK on it. Seasoning the cheese (or using two types of cheese, perhaps) would have gone a long way. It wasn't terrible nor was it dry - it just needed a little (ok a lot of) umpf. Oh and can we discuss how TINY the portion was?! Come guys, I know you're a new establishment but you're not gonna make a lot of people happy with children under 5 portion sizes. Smokin' Joe's BBQ is perfect for lunch (sans the mac) but you'd have to double your order for something a bit more filling. With that said, I will be back for the Po' Boy and I want to try out the ribs as well.

Hard to notice from the street but don't worry, you're not missing much. The first thing I ordered…read morewas their version of a strawberry mojito. It was watered down as if it was a mojito made by white claw. Now let's dive into the food. We ordered "quesamole" which is exactly as it sounds, queso and guacamole mixed, but with brisket. This appetizer was decent and I'm in no way a guacamole fan. For the main course I ordered a combo plate of sweet and saucy ribs, sweet and spicy shrimp, and baked Mac and cheese. Deep sigh. Let's begin with the mac and cheese, or should I say cheese. There appeared to be several penne noodles mixed with cheese beneath an inch thick layer of melted cheese. I can't stress enough how much cheese there was. The ratio of cheese to noodles was probably 80/20. Was not a fan. Next were the sweet and saucy ribs which seemed like they started with a bad cut of meat. There was fat in places where there shouldn't have been. My ribs could've come from a bad rack, but fine, don't serve that rack. The sauce was very mid tier. Not awful but nothing to write home about. The combo plate came with three bones; I ate one, picked over the second, and left the third. Last and certainly not least were the sweet and spicy shrimp. There wasn't anything sweet or spicy about these shrimp. If there was a sauce that was supposed to come with them, it didn't. However, the shrimp is what saved this restaurant from one star island. They were fried perfectly to a golden brown crisp. Not over cooked in the slightest bit. Shrimp is a delicate protein because it absorbs practically anything it makes contact with during the cooking process. A lot of places fail at fried shrimp by having dirty grease. This was not the case. If I had to recommend anything here, I'd say order a beer and the shrimp. Overall, I wouldn't say avoid this place, but if you are making a visit, don't have high expectations.

They have lots of fresh beef cuts, as well as some prepared food options like chicken cutlets and pastas. All of which looked great and like the perfect option to grab on a late night when you don't fully feel like cooking but want a homemade made. They also have a pretty nice wine selection, some baked goods (mostly cookies), and a cooler full of homemade soups, marinades and sauces. That seemed like the coolest part to me. You could buy your meat there and even buy the marinade in case you wanted to coon the dish a little later. I got the Kytana sandwich, which has smoked there, bacon, avocado, Russian dressing and arugula on a brioche bun with caraway seeds. The flavor of the sandwich was pretty good, although the turkey did taste pretty salty. I know that can sometimes happen with smoked meats, but this felt like a lot to me. My friend got the bbq short rib sandwich which looked delicious. It was on a hoagie roll and had pickles, red onion and cheddar cheese. The bbq sauce was really light, kind of seemed like a bbq gravy, but it was really tasty. I also got a pumpkin snickerdoodle cookie which was tasty. Service was super friendly and comfortable. The docs is very clean and looked like it has a lot of high quality ingredients, etc. I'd definitely return to try another sandwich of something for their adjacent smoke shop. So I ate it with a knife and fork. And it was DELICIOUS. The sandwich came with a big piece of crispy fried chicken that the bun could barely contain. The chicken was fried fresh, so it was hot and juicy. In addition to being hot in temperature, it was hot spice-wise. It came with candied jalapeños, soy chili jam, pickles, and Sriracha. The manager was explaining they make everything fresh and offered to answer any questions I had. I took a look at the specials then decided on a two piece crispy tenders meal. It came with a jalapeño corn muffin. It was 10 dollars and I chose a chocolate chip cookie with caramel and pecans in it because, why not. My chicken was delicious. I chose hot honey sauce because I was curious. It was so spicy and cleaned my sinuses right up. The sauce came on the side, thank goodness for that. The muffin was OK.
