We were looking for somewhere new to try so we went to Smoke. it certainly did not disappoint. the moment we walked in, there was a great vibe and the staff was very welcoming. I brought my girlfriend here who has celiac and it made her whole week! It was the first time she's eaten BBQ since her diagnosis. It might be the restaurant equivalent of bringing somebody to Disneyland. My wallet feels the danger of this place existing within thirty minutes of my house. I also have to give a shout of to the GREAT service we had. There was a man with a cool earring (which was very George Michael) at reception that was delightful, our waitress was SO helpful and sweet, and the owner (I'm guessing it was the owner) stopped by to check in with how everything was. Very good BBQ spot here. We stopped in on Fathers Day and it was busy. Took a while to get the food, but it was very good. Ordered the brisket and pulled pork, and my wife got the pulled pork sandwich with cornbread and fries. Kid got Mac and cheese. The brisket was good but had a few fatty spots, which I personally don't love. The pulled pork was excellent though. The interior was nice enough and servers were all kind. What a rollercoaster of flavors! From drastically over seasoned to flavorless and down right disgusting. Ordered the 6 piece wings buffalo and smoke flavor. Fried Brussels sprouts and 3 meat combo of burnt ends, hot links and pulled pork. Brussels sprouts - full of flavor! Just bursting with seasoning, drowning in sauce and enough salt in 1 bite to account for your daily dose of sodium. Wings - probably the more decent part of the meal. Nicely smoked. Ordered extra crispy, got soft soggy. But sauce was alright. Hot links - taste like a cheaply made hot dog with spice Burnt ends - fairly decent. A lot of fatty parts. Not much meat. Sauce was good Pulled pork - on the dry side, flavor was fine. No real complaints here. Side coleslaw - absolutely 0 seasoning. Just cabbage mix in a watery white sauce Side baked beans - ok but fairly flavorless Side of pickles with the meats - omg... the most disgusting pickled creation I've ever had. Like these things were left in a brine that's been expired for months and just sat there until they brined to the point of falling apart. Gave my puppy a carrot from the wings (no sauce of course) she wouldn't even eat that. Not a good sign. Staff were very friendly. Lady at the counter very nice. Food was ready way quickly (not a great sign either) oh and chili was worth a mention, pretty good actually. Wouldn't come back but chili acceptable. Not sure how something like this gets such awesome reviews. I'm no bbq snob but I've had great bbq. I've smoked my own meats. OMG no doubt about it, this is the bbq destination you have been looking for. I went at lunch and no wait. The process is this: you sit down, there's menus at the table. You decide what you want, then you go up to the register and pay and they'll answer all your questions there. Then you sit back down at your table and they bring the food to you. The table is fully stocked with all the sauces, condiments a roll of paper towels, and utensils... and wet naps!! I went alone, but that didn't stop me from ordering two separate meals. I did the "bowl to go", in which you picked two meats and two sides and let me tell you, their stuff that bowl full !! The small is not so small! I chose the brisket and the pulled pork with the house made fries, and potatoes au gratin. 1st the brisket was so tender and juicy. The pulled pork had no weird globs of fat, it was all so deliciously moist that you didn't even need a sauce - however at the table, they have a six pack of sauces with labels, and I experimented with each. The small was so full of meat that I was able to try all the sauces& mixed and matched! lol so so so good. highly recommend. The house fries were delicious, but the magic in the au gratin potatoes was out of this world! next time I go, I'm getting a large size of those au gratin potatoes to bring home. The second meal was the chili. I had to try it because I read so many reviews about it! Anticipating I would bring leftovers home, but since I didn't have breakfast, I ate it all!! Unashamedly! Yes it was spicy some jalapeños & spicy sausage as well as other meats. Comes with a side of sour cream which cooled down my palate. I regret not getting a side of cornbread! Next time! The table beside me ordered ribs and if I had any room left or had a dining companion, I would've definitely had those too! lol I recommend this place wholeheartedly . Plenty of parking & places to sit inside and out. Don't think twice. Go for lunch during the week- no lines no wait! i don't know about the dry brisket reviews, but I had the opposite experience. Great place to stop on the way up into Maine if you're gluten free. It's all gluten free except bread and Mac and cheese. Husband has celiacs. He was fine. Pulled pork was excellent on its own. Brunt ends were a bit oily but the brisket was absolutely perfect. Udis buns for the gluten free option. Take that as you will. We ate outside, enjoyed the backyard ambiance. I've had BBQ from all over the US, and live in the southeast United States for more than half of my 61 years on this earth. I know good BBQ, sweet tea, and good cornbread. THE FOOD The ribs were tender, but were severely lacking in what we go to a BBQ place for, smokey goodness. The brisket..... Though with excellent smoke flavor, was barely tepid warm, which definitely has an effect on how good it is. The sweet tea.... YUCK!! It had a very bad aftertaste, like it had been poured out of an aluminum can, definitely not fresh brewed. The cornbread..... Though sweet like I prefer, was extremely dry, and hard around the edges as if it sat under a heat lamp for most of the day. The slaw..... Extremely bland and quite bitter, basically cabbage with vinegar. THE SERVICE The waitstaff were very easy going, personable, and very polite. To them I give the full five stars! THE AMBIENCE It's perfectly fine for what it is, a BBQ place. MY FINAL THOUGHTS The servings you get are definitely NOT worth the price of admission! Patron beware! For $41 and change, I got 4 bland ribs, 4 or 5 thin slices of luke warm brisket, a 3"×2" piece of brick hard cornbread, and nasty sweet tea! It reminded me of typical tourist trap town overpriced fare. There are two vastly superior BBQ places not too far away from Smoke, and they serve fantastic fare with great portions. Either of the other two places I would recommend over Smoke. I wont name them, but one is in Sanford ME, though only open in the summer months, and just weekends. First time here. Got the brisket sandwich for $15 to go. It came with a nice serving of plain cole slaw made of green and red shredded cabbage and French fries. The meat was too salty and a bit less meat than usually would come on a sandwich like this. The fries were disappointing because they were not at all warm but at least they were not at all salty. I was excited to try Smoke BBQ, as my wife and I are from North Carolina, having a local smokehouse joint was awesome! Having lived in both Texas & North Carolina over the past 15 years, I can say confidently that the BBQ from Smoke is legit. The ribs were really fantastic and were competition quality. The sign of a perfect rib is you take a bite and you should see just the bite taken out of the rib -- these were it! I also really enjoyed the creativity of having Pork Belly burnt ends. The sides were also very good. The Mac started to solidify as it cooled but this is a good thing: it means they make it with real cheese and don't water it down with milk or cream! The fries were regally crispy, reminded me a lot of duck fat fries I've had in the past. Why only four stars? Their sauces Their "Smokehouse Original", which is a sweet sticky Kansas City style sauce was on point and the Star of the show. The others? They weren't for me. Their "Texas Tang" was essentially vinegar and chili powder. "Carolina Gold", while technically a mustard sauce, missed the mark again because they seemed to use the same chili powder type seasoning in it (I think they call it "Loose"?). "South of the Border" tasted a little out of place, and "True Grit" was a distant second to "Smokehouse Original" I would love to see the "Texas Tang" transformed into a more Eastern Style North Carolina Vinegar sauce. "Carolina Gold" could be made much more true to a South Carolina mustard BBQ sauce, and perhaps a true Texas BBQ sauce with a little more heat and bite than their "Smokehouse Original". The service and staff were great. Very friendly and attentive wait staff and the food came out pretty quickly. We made use of their outdoor patio, which on a nice day is phenomenal (road noise aside). I'll caution that with good quality BBQ this far north, it comes at a premium. Splitting an app with two mains and just sodas can easily top $80 for two people (after tax+tip). But let's be honest, if you're craving legit BBQ -- price doesn't matter read more
