3.5 stars. On previous visits to Maine, we qdined at Via Sophia, the business that previously occupied the Signal space. Our recent weekend dinner with friends had us comparing the two restaurants. The food was very good at Signal,but the ambiance was unpleasant. VIBE: The decor at Signal seemed more rustic than the more urbane Via, with prevalent wood tones and warmer lighting. The thumping music was unpleasantly loud, , as was the noise from other diners. Lighting was OK. SERVICE: Staff were warm & welcoming; our server was attentive to begin with, but less so after a half-hour or so. FOOD: Food was the high point of our visit; everyone enjoyed their food. Fried calamari was light,tender, and tasty. Halibut was delicious. A side of roasted potatoes was exemplary -- tender and moist inside, crunchy outside. Scallops were tasty, moist and tender. A side of Moroccan carrots was delicious. One diner liked a chicken en croute special. Wine was a mixed bag: cabernet and primitivo were insipid, grenache was OK. Good cooking notwithstanding, I'm not sure we'll go back given the unpleasant noise. read more

Signal Kitchen + Bar was one of the highlights of our trip to Kennebunk. We started with the oysters, which were incredibly fresh, followed by the octopus, which was perfectly cooked and packed with flavor. The king crab leg was the star of the meal, sweet, tender, and absolutely worth ordering. The food was beautifully presented, the service was attentive, and the atmosphere struck a great balance between upscale and relaxed. I really love the way signal decorated this space, it is absolutely stunning! We came in for lunch on a beautiful day with our Bachelorette party and opted to sit outside which was perfect because they have a covered patio so it was very comfortable. Our waiter Ian was exceptional with catering to our party of 5 and really made our bride to be feel special. He was great with his wine and food recommendations and answered any questions we had. If he didn't know the answer he went and found the answer for us, truly incredible service. The bottles of wines we ordered were delicious so the wine list is beautifully done here. We opted for two orders of the burrata as an appetizer for the whole table. This was so delicious, perfectly cooked fresh tomato's and creamy burrata with perfect crunchy fresh bread. We also were brought the complimentary bread with olive oil, balsamic, and salt to put on it. For mains I got the falafel gyro which came with house made chips and this was so refreshing and delicious! The feta and tsaziki was so creamy and refreshing, all of the veggies were fresh and the addition of hummus was awesome. Falafel was perfectly made. I think the chips were my favorite part, you can beat a house made chip. Some other entrees we had were the kale ceasar add salmon, the patatas bravas, and watermelon salad add chicken. All were hits with our party. While we munched Ian made sure to refill out wine glasses and check on us. At the end they sent out complimentary champagne for our wedding party! This was such a great experience and absolutely delicious. I will be back to try dinner service and want to thank Signal for giving our bridal party such a special experience! read more

Service was extremely slow. We were constantly waiting for our drinks (I think there was only one bartender for the whole restaurant). Bread didn't even come out for the first 30 or so minutes. We got sometime else's entree dropped on our table that was then taken away. However, where this place really dropped the ball was on the food quality. We did enjoy the octopus and calamari but most of the food was very meh, good enough, a little under seasoned. But the tuna crudo was inedible. Sat at the bar for dinner and drinks. Most of the food was good. However, the pasta dish I had came out so fast and it wasn't very hot, almost like it was reheated. Raw tuna appetizer was yummy and my wife loved her burrata. Here is my problem, if you are going have Lost Fire prices, you need to have amazing service. Service needs improvement and better attention to their guests. I don't want this to come off negative, because this place has a lot of potential. I just wish it was a better experience. Fantastic service - we loved our server, she was super friendly and fun. We were sadly disappointed by the food. The bread they brought out was amazing. But the croutons in the kale Caesar were basic store bought/what you'd get in a salad at Olive Garden. Would rather they leave them out. Tuna crudo is not actually crudo - it's poke style in a bowl with avocado and a smoky spicy mayo that tasted like bbq sauce. Ordered the king crab from the raw bar and it was one tiny leg for $75 - not at all what we'd expect or are used to from other places. Catch of the day was soft shell crab and these were excellent, the seasoning on the breading was insanely good. Diver scallops were phenomenal, huge in size and exactly the portion you'd expect for the price. Perfectly seared and buttery on the inside. Might be some of the best I've ever had. All of the sides were disappointing. Broccoli with pesto felt like someone microwaved frozen broccoli and tossed in a bit of pesto. Mushrooms weren't cooked long enough so they sat watery in their juice. Creamed spinach was fine, but none of these dishes were worth their $12 price tag. Rigatoni vodka was really good but a small portion - understandable all things considered. Overall, we had high highs and low lows. We love the atmosphere and the drinks were good, I thought the wine was excellent and some of the best I've had in the area on a "by the glass" menu. Not sure we'd visit again for dinner, but if they started doing a happy hour we'd absolutely come back to the bar for drinks and app bites! read more

We had high hopes for Signal but unfortunately the experience fell short. Service was the biggest issue -- our waitress didn't ask if we wanted drinks until she'd already taken our food order, and our dishes (fish and a rare steak) took a full hour to arrive, even though the restaurant wasn't at capacity. Our waitress never came back to check on us or close out the bill, so we ended up flagging down the host just to pay. The food itself was disappointing too -- everything came out over-salted, and the tiniest portion, which was a shame given the promising menu. I wanted to like this place, but between the slow service and the food not landing, I probably wouldn't go back. Hopefully it was an off night, since the space and concept have potential. read more

We came here when it was Via Sophia, so figured we'd give it a try. The interior looks beautiful! We were greeted and shown to our seats immediately. Our waitress was Sandra who could not have been more friendly and attentive! We knew that they had only been open for a short while. I had read reviews and the scallops were given high marks. My husband ordered them and they were great! He had them with the bearnaise sauce on the side. He got the garlic mashed potatoes delicious. We did start with the watermelon salad that had been praised too. There were marinated green & Kalamata olives in the salad which I love but I'm afraid they had been marinated a little too long very spicy not to my liking. But the watermelon was delicious! We were served rolls to start, would have liked them to have been warm. I ordered a special for the day a corn chowder $12 that you could add lobster to for $10 more. Reasonably price and chowder rich and creamy. The warm dates small plate intrigued me I love dates so I ordered it. It had almonds, ham, and blue cheese. The presentation is beautiful, but it was difficult to eat because the dates were not cut up. I would've rather that they stuffed the dates with the almonds and blue cheese and wrapped it in some bacon would've been easier to eat. Not my favorite. Our neighbor got patatas bravas which they liked & raved about the broccoli too. Food was ok and I would go back again. Oh forgot the Comos were Excellent! The bartender knows his trade. Lovely atmosphere with pleasant, experienced server. Food was suboptimal. The salmon was presented with those fake brown grill lines and was pre cooked. It's so easy to serve fresh local veggies in the summer, but Signal chose to serve frozen veggies that were zapped, and drenched in oil. Gyro was a mountain of bland feta covering meager pieces of cuke, tomato, steak. We hoped dessert would save our experience; it did not. I really wanted to love Signal, and I genuinely hope they succeed because Kennebunk needs great independent restaurants. The positives first: the space is beautiful, the atmosphere is inviting, the staff has been friendly on both of my visits, and the pricing feels fair for the area. Unfortunately, after eating there twice, the food has been consistently underwhelming. The steamed broccoli with pesto was clearly frozen broccoli florets that were still partially frozen when served, and there was no pesto. The filet arrived gray throughout despite having grill marks, lacked seasoning, and simply wasn't the quality I'd expect at that price point. The patatas bravas weren't really patatas bravas, they resembled smashed potatoes with a sauce that was just okay. The grilled octopus was served cold and lacked both the flavor and texture I was hoping for. My impression is that the menu is trying to be too many things at once. It's ambitious, offering everything from seafood and steaks to Spanish-inspired small plates, pasta, and gyros. Sometimes less really is more. I think the restaurant would benefit from a smaller, more focused menu that allows the kitchen to execute every dish consistently and at a high level. I'd rather see 20 exceptional dishes than 50 mediocre ones. I truly hope they find that sweet spot because the restaurant has so much potential. The foundation is there, a beautiful space, welcoming staff, and reasonable prices. I'll happily come back in a few months, probably this fall, and give it another try. I'm rooting for them and hope they're able to settle into their stride. read more

Absolutely delicious! We went for a family 4th of July celebration and had a great time. The staff are very kind and the restaurant is aesthetically decorated. The food was exceptionally seasoned (some herbs seem to be grown on the decks)! We got simple dishes, but they were cooked so well they became exceptional. The sides were especially good. While it was good, it wasn't my favorite margarita-style cocktail I've had. Appetizers: This was the highlight of the meal. The oysters were exquisite, and the watermelon greek salad was absolutely outstanding. The tuna crudo, however, missed the mark. The tuna was cut into overly large pieces and was heavily dressed with mayonnaise, which masked the fish's natural flavor. Dinner: This was the most disappointing part of the experience. The menu requires diners to choose pairings and build portions of the dish themselves, which felt like an unnecessary burden. When I go out to dinner, I'd rather order a thoughtfully composed dish than make multiple decisions about how it should be assembled. The broccoli side was also underwhelming and tasted very much like it had come straight from a frozen bag. I'm going to start this review by telling you I don't like seafood and finding a good steak in the Kennebunk/Ogunquit area is really difficult. Lost Fire is great but this place?!? If you haven't been what are you waiting for?!? We only found Signal because it's open later than most restaurants in the area. My daughter and I needed dinner and every other place we went to was full, so we figured we'd give it a try. After looking over the menu nothing really caught our eye until we saw another table ordering the warm donut dessert. At that point, it didn't matter what our main was that dessert was getting in my belly. We ordered the filet with mashed potatoes and an extra side of fingering potatoes because we couldn't decide between the 2. I really didn't care too much about dinner- that was until it arrived. It was hands down one of the best steaks I've had in my life. It was up there with Bistecca alla Fiorentina- IYKYK. Tender, full of flavor, you could have cut it with a fork and the béarnaise. Absolutely amazing! And the mashed potatoes 10 out of 10. It was beyond delicious. We only split our main to get dessert. There was no way we were leaving without trying the donuts! It was served with 3 large warm cinnamon sugar donuts. Along with vanilla ice cream, a blueberry compote and a sweet lemon cream sauce. It was heavenly, but still managed to not be too heavy. I will be dreaming about this meal until the next time we meet. Get to Signal already, what are you waiting for?!? The patio is adorable, service was amazing and the food?! Top notch. The staff will cause this restaurant to close. The host/manager ( young man with bleached blond tips) is an Applebees protégée who landed in OZ ( Signal) as a manger somehow when some absentee investor thought he was qualified to manage a high end wannabe restaurant . The food is overpriced but ok. The manager however sets a tone with staff that customers are to be treated poorly and as an annoyance. When January comes this place will close. We dined at the bar. Ordered at 8:40. At 8:57 before food had been served were told while we could remain at bar to eat but no further drinks could be served. No option no advance notice. This restaurant is poorly managed by incompetents. As a result, it's not worth your time or money. A very substandard experience created by staff who is better suited to be employed at your local family chain restaurant. Won't return ... ever and not should you. Much better more pleasant places in Kennebunk to spend your money. read more

We've been coming to this location for decades. It was first Grudini's and then. Via Sophia. We've been for three weeks and eating all over town. This dinner was mediocre at best. The waitress couldn't answer any questions about the details of the entrées, including the specials. We have so many memories of previous experiences in this space and this was honestly extremely disappointing. We cannot recommend anyone spending their time or money at this restaurant! read more

The pita was so stale, I couldn't even cut it with a knife. There was hardly any meat, and what was there was a couple of tough and flavorless cubes. We happened to feel like a cold beverage and stopped in. We sat on the patio and were served by Rebecca who was very knowledgeable about the wine. Its brand new and it's a great place. We had a beer and white wine (Grüner Veltliner - very good) oysters, shrimps (huge!) and tuna crudo. Very good, service was awesome and the vibe is very chill but elegant. I rarely write reviews but this experience was so bad, I hope they read this. Our dinner was just awful. Over cooked fish that clearly had been sitting for ages under a heat lamp. Same for the sides. Clams with pasta - only 6 over cooked clams on a bed of over cooked pasta. The place was freezing and dark, staff was nice but how far can that go when we were left waiting over an hour for food. Apologies came with the excuse the kitchen was "backed up" - I understand the teething of new place but this was beyond that. So disappointing! read more
