Smittys is great and my new go to. The price is so much more reasonable then most other places and Ben does a good job and if you need it can usually get you in with almost no notice. read more

Bros swear he cut hair fucked my shit up! answered phone like he was the best in the west! Id never go there again

My husband went there today, and he was very happy with his haircut. The wait was short, and the barber was friendly.

I've been going to Smitty's for many years and have always been satisfied with the service, both in terms of quality and price. Ben (aka Smitty) is an outstanding barber and he aims to please. It's a cash only shop and you should call ahead. read more

Worst shop ever. Super rude. What's the point of 4pm close if you decide to close at 2:45pm?!? He literally turned me away. Stay away!

I've been coming to Smitty's for a little over a few years now on a monthly basis, just a drop in the bucket compared to the 65 years that this place has been opened for. The very first time I came here there was a very old man getting is perfectly coiffed hair cut. One of the hairdressers told me that he had been coming here for 60 years... Wow! I try to switch between the two brunnette girls that are there because they both possess very good hair cutting techniques. True, they don't use any products, no hair washing, no head massage but I have NEVER had a scratchy neck/ back when leaving. I love that "vacuum" they use to clean off the hairs with. I wish all salons had that. I always look damn good when I'm done there and for $12 bucks CASH... It doesn't get much better than that. Parking is a little sketch, as it's street parking and I drive a big a$$ (fire breathing) truck so it's tough for me to find a parking spot. But you Seattle-ites with your Vespa's and Smartcars shouldn't have any trouble. They also have a super cute, very well behaved pomeranian named Rex that lives in the shopping bag in the store that reminds me of my old pomeranian Simba... P.s. I was just kidding about the fire-breathing part. read more

Love this place. Cash only, and you should always call ahead, but won't be going anywhere else for the rest of my time living Seattle. So much better than Rudy's. read more

I do not recommend. Not satisfied with any of the work done. Didnt fade properly and left the sides long and the top short. Went back to get it fixed and they made it worse than it already was. Complained about the fact that I was unsatisfied with the cut. Very unprofessional, bad customer service, low quality. Dont go here read more

The single worst haircut i have ever gotten, completely ignored what i wanted and suggested a hairstyle and when i denied it and told him the trim i wanted he ignored me and went with his suggested haircut. Rushed the haircut and did a terrible job. read more

My first haircut was at Smitty's back in 1968, my dad took us there when we were 2. Fond memories for sure..... Took my both my sons (22 and 32 now) for his first haircut with exact same experience. read more

Both Ben and Lou are awesome, I've been coming to them for years now, by far the best deal in town. Super strange seeing all the negative reviews on here, as I've never had a bad experience. They even do the old school razor shave at the end. Great conversation and Lou is awesome with kids. Highly recommend, unless you love paying 50 bucks for a simple haircut in Seattle these days. read more

Had my haircut here for the first time. Very cute place with an awesome mascot! Three chairs in this tiny shop, I had my haircut by the male barber. Very nice guy but his chair is real close to the wall and he has trouble getting around the window and his chair. It seems uncomfortable for him and he bumped into me a lot. I thought "It can't be easy to give a good haircut with those conditions." I was correct because I noticed when I was at work that one side of my hair was longer than the other and I had a line all the way across my head that was not blended. I went back and the guy fixed his mistake and was apologetic but I don't think I will go back. read more

DO NOT COME HERE if you're a young guy looking for a clean, basic fade. My barber simply didn't have the clipper or razor skills to do so. The WORST part was that I asked if we could "go a little shorter" (a simple ask) and the male barber got frustrated, told me that it's "a whole new haircut" and that he'd have to charge me twice. Mind you, I only came in to get the slides trimmed and nothing off the top. I was shocked at his response, and had to shut up, accept the bad haircut, and proceed to another shop to get it fixed. I was shocked at that response, as I've never had a barber respond to me that way when asking if we could "go a little shorter" on the sides. Please don't go here. Go some place where they listen to feedback and want you walk out feeling your best. read more

This is my first yelp review, and I felt compelled to write it because of all of the negative reviews that Smitty's has. I went there for the first time today and had my haircut by the man with dark hair and a beard (as opposed to the woman who was working there). I'm not much for chit chat during a haircut, so this place was perfect. He asked me what I wanted, I told him, he did a great job, and gave me my first straight razor neck shave. The haircut was $20. I also liked the set up of the place. It is old and small. You're not facing the mirror, you're facing the window, and you get to see what your hair looks like once the cut is done. Added bonus: Mad Max was playing on the TV. read more

Not happy with my cut. Tired of stylists that don't listen to you! I said trim the sides to the top of the ears and got them practically shaved. I said short on top and longer in the back. I got the opposite. I will not be back. Now I have to pay again to get it fixed! Less than pleased! read more

We took our 2-yr old boys in for a simple trim. The cut they both got was great! And WAY cheaper than other places who cater to kids. They didn't sit in cars for their haircut, but they changed the TV to cartoons and were very good with the boys. We'll be back! read more

I should have listened to the other reviews. Just moved to Seattle and will continue seeking a true man's barber shop. Haircut was OK at best. Mostly I was shocked that what appears to be an old school barber shop doesn't even finish with a straight razor neck shave. The only redeeming quality is that it is across the street from the Blue Dog if you are seeking a good breakfast. read more

I've taken my 13-yr old son to Smitty's 4 times now and have had stellar experiences every time. My son loves his cuts from there, way more than Rudy's and it's less expensive. Both Ben and Lou are great. Highly recommend. read more

I came her 3 days ago, about 45 min before closing time. The lady received me telling me that she was about to close. 45 min before the specified closing time. Then I asked about the prices, because it's not very clear what the difference is between a $20 and a $25 haircut. After being given an explanation, I was still confused. Then I was told that if I wanted a fade (which was NOT specified in the price list) costs $25. Ok, why not put it in the price list? Then I was told the price can also be $25 if the haircut turns out to be more complicated than expected. Really? Oh, and they also don't take credit card. What year is this? So I left. I came back 3 days later. This time the guy received me and I asked again about the prices. I was told, with a kind of annoyed attitude, the exact same things as the lady, so I just told him I wanted it short, making sure it was the $20 pricing. In the end the haircut was not good. I noticed a couple hours later that it was not even on the sides, and I had to carefully trim it at home to make it look even. In summary: the attitude to customers when they ask for prices, the lack of clarity with the prices, and the lack of experience as a barber, is forcing me to give them a 2 star rating, and I won't come back. read more

This is not the Smitty's I used to go to with my dad when I was a kid. The other poor reviews can be confirmed based upon my most recent experience. The haircut was in poor quality and there isn't a consistent price between the son and mom. Is it $20 or $25? I would recommend going elsewhere. You aren't going to save any money here. The tradition is dead. read more

I walked in, asked a couple questions, then walked out. The guy seemed really irritated that I was asking him any questions. It's cash only BTW so make sure you go to an ATM ahead of time. Because you know, it's 1987 and they don't take cards. Did not want to cut my hair and get my business as his demeanor said all I needed to hear. Glad I walked out. read more

Lourdes, one of the female regular barbers is great. She has the best stylistic sensibilities, is patient, easy going and gentle around my neck area which is very tender. The price keeps creeping up ($16 as of 01/10/12) in a time when I think it should not; but, I feel like I get the personal touch when I'm there and therefore it is ultimately worth the sense of well being I experience when I leave. However, it is disappointing that they don't do hair coloring. But then they wouldn't be a barber shop. read more

WORST service experience ever. Period. Cold reception when I entered. I wanted to give simple instuctions to make it an easy cut. When the barber (and owner!) asked what I wanted, I told him "just cut it like yours". When he finally handed me the mirror ( the cut took too long and I kept wondering if the guy knew what he was doing) I said with a shock "What did you do to my hair?!" He told me to get out and accused me of trying to get a free hair cut. Then he proceeded to blame his rage on me, accusing me of starting it, which must have been the part where I said "What did you do to my hair!?" Which is exactly what I thought when I saw it in the mirror. He had shaved a notch in my hairline to resemble a sort of asymmetric widows peak, then proceeded to tell me that I have a receding hairline, which I don't, which is obvious and irrefutably untrue. Can you see that widows peak in my pic? I don't have any widows peak at all! He put it there! We went around and around. Then he told me I have a cowlick, which I do. The problem, however, is that my cowlick was (was, as in, it's gone now) exactly where my supposed "receding hairline" was/is. What? Did he fail to see the contradiction? The woman Barber tried to offer me solution by reminding me that my hair would grow back. That didn't help their case. How, after all, would my "receding hairline" grow back? I thought he was going to punch me, or I him because I have a powerful dislike for manipulative bully types who presume that most folks will avoid conflict and pay up, even when they're in the right on matters such as this. I left without paying, my hair is a botch and needs repair. This event provoked my very first Yelp ever. Fun! I never thought I would Yelp. Especially over a $20 haircut. Smitty's should be called Sh$@&y's. I'm shocked by how I was treated. It may appear that I've gone on and on here. Trust me, I'm still biting my tongue. read more

Without a doubt the worst haircut of my life. Asked for shorter sides, longer top, take off a month's worth. The male barber cut 3 inches off the front of my hair, cut the left side shorter than the right and didn't trim my side burns. I was so angry with this horrible chop job that I returned later in the day to have him try and fix it. It's still a mess. WORST HAIRCUT IN 30 YEARS. I would NEVER even consider returning here. read more

Hubby got hair cut here today. He didn't really have a clear vision of what he wanted so we just said "shorter." Out came the clippers wielded by expert hands and we were out of there within 20 minutes. No fancy products, no head massage, just the basics for $13 plus tip. Hubby said he'd go back in a minute (though he won't need to for a while). read more

Time for the old bag to hang it up. Rude, rude, rude and ha no talent in the barber realm.

I have been here a few times. The first time I went I received a good cut, but the two cuts I have had since have been bad ones. The last time I was there I had to tell the guy to shorten it up 3 times. He finally quit asking me how it looked and decided I was done. I left with over an inch of hair that I would have liked chopped off. I got it fixed somewhere else 4 days later. read more

Not sure why the bad reviews. Friendly and did a good job. Plain and simple- but for a man that should be all you are looking for.

Not a bad haircut. Nothing fancy or anything and they're consistent. Nice people too.

I've been going here for 4 years now, ever since I moved to Seattle. No complaints. I'd like to say "Huh?" at some of the other reviews. You have to review a place based on what it's supposed to be. Basically this place is what you expect of a barber shop. It is not a 80 dollar a cut salon... But it's not supposed to be! You're in, you're out, and it's on the cheap. I think as long as you're looking at things as you should be it's gotta get 5 stars. It does what it's supposed to do perfectly! Before this I used to go to a fancy pants hair dresser, but when I moved here I didn't have time to find one and this place was between my house and work. Very convenient. After going here a few times I realized that I didn't need to spend 3 times as much money to get basically the same cut at a salon. If you're expecting some super styled cut then this isn't the place, but if you just want a basic hair cut it'll do you good. Plus I love the people that work here. I've ran into them at bars in Ballard and hung out with them, I've been invited to parties at their house. They're just good guys. Unless I move from Ballard (fat chance of that happening!) I doubt I'll ever go anywhere else. read more

Now settled in their new location ---- 1417 NW 54th St. ---- It's in the new brick building south of Safeway and east of Mud Bay pet store. Near the El Camion food truck. I've been going to Smitty's since James was around and am always pleased with the cut. Now I just come in and wait for Lourdes to ask if I want the usual. She always does a great job and I love the warm lather and straight razor to finish the back of the neck! I'll miss the old location for sure but that's progress in Ballard I suppose! Look for their old barber pole they were able to bring with them from their former location. read more
