I've been a years long and dedicated Smith tea customer. I've been ordering their matcha and special batch matcha for years. As well as iced tea, black tea and every other type of tea. I stopped by excited to get a drink and grab some matcha - they do not carry matcha in the store. Ok weird. I finally flag down the attention of some staff after wandering around for a few minutes (in a very small space) and the employee was short with me, kind of stand offish and I felt weird being there ‍ After that experience I decided to look for some new locally sourced tea (and found some in matcha freak thank goodness) so that I could move my money elsewhere. I order online from them all the time but was so excited for a trip to Portland that allowed me a visit of their headquarters. So much variety in tea flavors and truly the smoothest to drink. The shop was full of visitors tasting to go or sitting for a flight. Staff was super helpful making recommendations and making our visit so notable. Remarkable fragrance in this place. Since Covid, I've had very reduced ability to smell, but I could definitely smell the amazing fragrance inside of here. The shop is very organized and visually pleasing. Staff members were delightful. We ordered a hibiscus iced tea, a latte, a slice of carrot cake, and a chocolate chip cookie, and all were amazing. Parking is rough. We went around the block about a half dozen times before we finally scored a place, so it may be worth it to park a few blocks away and walk over. read more

Smith always has a great variety of tea. They process it right there at this location. You can see what's going on in the back through some big windows. I like that they do seasonal blends. Their Lover's Leap in February is one of my favorites. I had to stock up to last me the year because I knew it was going away. One year at Christmas time they had lotion infused with their tea, that was manufactured in South Korea. It's some of the best lotion I've ever had. Sadly it isn't coming back. Took my parents here after spending time in downtown Portland since we wanted to enjoy tea and late snacks before our next stop. I've brought other friends here before so I knew it was going to be good. The tea shop is super quaint and they have samples of tea leaves you can smell and create a tasting flight for. What caught our eye was their charcuterie (essentially their cheese and tea tasting flight). The cheese comes from Cowbell (nearby local Portland cheese shop) and is paired with green and oolong teas. What a treat! It was quite affordable (around 20) and the four of us had enough bites and tea. We were pretty full so didn't have enough space for their baked treats, which I recall go really well with their teas. If you're visiting Portland, Smith Teamaker is a must to stop by for a cup of tea or tea on tap. Last year when I visited it was a very hot day and the tea on tap flight was so refreshing and tasty. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, tea room, and shop! Our tasting was very unique and pleasant. The four different pours were lovely. I have never had a tea with effervescence, which they refer to as "fruitsmithing"- fruits and spices with bubbles. I learned about cold steeping iced tea. The process of using cold water reduces bitterness and highlights the sweetness of the tea leaves. Last week when I visited the shop I had the newest blackberry jasmine iced tea. I loved it so much that I bought a bag to take home with me. This seasonal green tea is so pretty and ranges from a blue sparkling sapphire to a darker blue like butterfly pea flower. I bought a delicious Blackberry Jasmine Iced Tea seasonal release, and it's wonderful. I've been a fan of Meadow, Black Lavender, Lord Bergamot, and Silver Tip blends for a long time. This is the first iced tea I've liked--and the color is beautiful, thanks to the butterfly pea flower. It's blue and tasty. I had limited time on my first visit to this beautiful store and cafe, so I got my Ode to Whiskey black tea to go. It was perfectly brewed but not quite to my liking...yet. I bought a tin, anticipating I'd love it at first sip. I'll experiment more at home to see if my response changes. I would have picked up a black peach iced tea, but they were out. Rest assured, gentle reader, Smith Teamaker has a wonderful website, and I'll be alerted when this tea is available. Their delivery service is efficient and one can subscribe to regular shipments of favorite teas (and get rewards for future purchases). If you're a tea fan, this is your place. This is a great place to take friends and out of town guests who enjoy tea. When I have more time, I'll be back for a London Fog in a ceramic cup. I had a few questions, and there were several staffers to easily answer anything I asked about. For now it's four stars because I spent about 15 minutes browsing and ordering to go. They asked me a few questions and then selected three exquisite teas for me to try while I enjoyed my delectable almond croissant. I wouldn't have tried 1912 on my own and now it is my new favorite! If you're a specialist in one type of camellia sinensis, e.g., puerh or oolong, this won't be the ultimate tea place for you, although they WILL have at least a few in your category. Many of their teas are blends of different teas and other flavors -- as a tea purist I didn't expect to like the blends, but I admit I've gotten hooked on one (Lavender Black) and also gone nuts over one of the herbal blends (Golden Light). Once you know what you want, you can buy bags to go or order from the website (or maybe find it in a grocery store). We decided to visit Smith Teamaker after visiting Bob's Red Mill's flagship store and smelling the bulk teas for sale. The jars of tea were so aromatic that it prompted us to look up the supplier, Steven Smith Teamaker. Many tea rooms only offer tastings after registering for a class or making a reservation; this shop, on the other hand, offers tea flights at any time. We were intrigued enough to head over immediately after leaving Bob's Red Mill. Flight ($12.50) - This comes with three cups of tea, of which we went with the Rose Genmaicha, Snowflake Oolong, and the Phoenix Oolong. The teamaker expertly prepares the teas, soaking the bags at just the right water temperature and time to bring out all the latent flavors. The Rose Genmaicha starts with a flowery rose taste before transitioning to more of a roasty toasty rice taste towards the bottom of the cup due to the particulates residing on the bottom. The Snowflake Oolong is light, but very pleasant to drink. It has the classic oolong flavor, but has almost a bit of tropical fruitiness and sweetness undertones. Very delicious. Finally, the Phoenix Oolong has a bit of an astringency, not enough to make me pucker, but enough to make me understand why they claim it's velvety. I can see the resemblance. This oolong is definitely more oxidized and exhibits has some pleasant berry notes. I'm not sure I would say lingonberry like the description states, but definitely berry-like. This was my favorite of the bunch. The teamakers provide water to clear the palette between sips. For those who don't like drinking plain tea, syrup can be add a la carte to sweetness preference. Behind one of the glass doors, we could see tea tasters sipping tea and spitting it out into buckets. They certainly take their teas seriously! Smith Teamaker is a place to hang out and leisurely sip tea while reading a book or otherwise relaxing. I highly recommend a visit for anyone with an interest in tea at all. I am already planning a revisit for their gaiwan tea experience, something I haven't seen offered before at a tea shop. I'm excited to see how the characteristics of the teas change with subsequent infusions! Bathrooms: Single unisex room. Hard to imagine finding such an upscale establishment in the heart of the industrial Central Eastside district, but this is one portion of the city that has continued to surprise me of late. After a long afternoon of playing with the little one at OMSI, a refreshing cup of tea (iced or otherwise) was just what we needed, myself ordering the former (an iced Exceptional black) and my wife the latter (a cup of Autumn Leaves). Sitting on the elevated patio on what is likely to be the last of the sunny afternoon weekend days this year, sipping our tea and enjoying each other's company, my wife and I contemplated our infrequent consuming of tea, and how that is something that needs to be rectified, for both our enjoyment and our good health. We both agreed that a change was in order, and some tea was promptly purchased, in the hope of shaking up our nightly pre-bed rituals and hopefully ushering in a new era of deep, restful sleep. This place smells otherworldly. As soon as you walk in, you're greeted with the heavenliest scent. To the left, there are all the teas for sale along with loose leaves for you to smell and in-depth descriptions of each individual tea. To the right, there is a (rather small) tasting room and behind the counter, there's a glass wall where you can watch the workers package the tea. There are lattes, pastries, individual cups, and tea flights for sale. I did the build-your-own flight with digits, lullaby, and kissmet. Digits and Kissmet are both limited/seasonal, but they were delicious! Lullaby was great as well and I'm intrigued to try more of their wellness teas. The staff were all kind and the teas tasted amazing. I was disappointed that we were not able to make a reservation (they have been booked out from mid December through Valentine's Day!) but we snagged a seat along the wall. The whole place really filled up and the line was long, but the experience was well worth it. If you plan on doing some tastings, I recommend making a reservation when possible to ensure you have a place to sit. Seating aside, this is the perfect spot to pop into for a latte or morning snack on the go. read more

A great way to try a variety of authentic teas with seasonal tea drink creations. Me and my friends were such a huge fan, we came here two times out of the three days we were staying in Portland. If interested you could also look into their "tea maker's studio" experience where you get to go in the back and do some things (I clearly did not do this as I do not know what these "things" are, but sounds cool regardless LOL) When you order their tea flights, they come with cool informational cards that tell you a bit more about the origins and the notes of the teas you selected. Unfortunately you cannot keep these cards :( ..... This is my first time visiting and also brought some out-of-state visitors. They were impressed and really enjoyed the whole experience! This location is in the warehouse district right across from Olympia Provisions. Parking can be challenging around this area but they do have dedicated customer parking. The only issue I had was that the entrance was only accessible by stairs (unless I just didn't see a ramp??) I had a baby in a stroller and luckily had the 2 friends who helped me bring that up and down those stairs. Now the inside is very open and bright. They had a shop where you can buy packaged tea to go, in the middle is the tea bar for dining in, and a private tea room to the right for private tastings and events. I thought the coolest part was that you can actually see into the factory from the shop inside and all the workers packaging tea! So cool! My friends got the tea flights and the Marionberry pop tart and I got the seasonal Merry Maker's Punch. They were impressed with the tea selection and really appreciated the brewing method and care for the most tasty loose tea experience. With the tea flight you get to choose 3 different teas from their wide selection of white, green, black, oolong, and fruity teas. The coolest thing is they all come with a card describing the tea with the map of the region it came from, and also the actual loose tea for smelling and a sensory experience. Bonus was the Marionberry pop tart was super flaky and really added to the Oregon local experience. I also enjoyed my hot spiced fruity punch as well. We came here after my daughter attended an event at Melody Event Center. The tasting room itself is a nice place to stop, rest, and enjoy a good cup of tea or order a flight. You have two options at Smith Teamaker: drive into this industrial district to grab a pricey bag of tea and go home to risk forgetting it's in your cabinet. Or (what I recommend) you can give yourself time to linger, forget what's outside the tea room's door, get a tea flight, and enjoy both the ambiance and the flavors in front of you. On my most recent visit, I chose the former option to grab the "Ice Cream Royale" flavor developed in partnership between Smith and Salt & Straw.
