Whenever I seek the company of reverent, warm, and kindred tea folk, I know where to go. Fly Awake is my go-to cozy tea nook in town where I trust I can carry my wary or light heart in and be met with *just* the perfect tea suggestion from someone I can feel cares for the ritual and steep as much as I do. I cherish getting to introduce tea lovers who have not yet found this tea-easy sorta place and witness as they marvel at the space and menu and then receive care one lovely steep after another. I've taken a few of the sweet dream in watercolor classes offered in the space as well and adore the community support and collaboration that allows such a perfect practice overlap. Great little place in the Mississippi neighborhood. It seems like a well-kept secret as the teahouse is tucked away in an alley. The staff is very nice, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic about tea. I was not sure what to get, so I told the teamaker the flavors I did not like and ordered a dealer's choice. He gave me a cup of something called princess with a dagger. Very tasty. To make matters worse, when I inquired about sourcing, he simply stated they did not have any information without follow-up or curiosity. This experience, coupled with the marketing language on the website, left me feeling disappointed, as I was hoping to find elements of tea culture that I've appreciated in over nearly a decade in various settings. This is probably one of THE BEST places to go to in Portland if you like tea. It's a small and cozy blink-and-miss place but trust Google maps. The decor is very creative and artistic but also calming in a sense. The tea selection is amazing. I would recommend the flight because you can try different teas and the service is unlimited so you can drink as much as you want. The owner of the place personally served us and helped us pick our teas and everything he said was spot-on. The teas are all different and some of them, I've not even heard of before. Kudos to their creativity. The food is limited but everything I tried was absolutely great. It's all made fresh and full of flavor. They make better samosas than most Indian places. I would have loved to see more food choices, some more small bites because I think they can really do a great job with whatever they choose to have on their menu. Highly recommended to my friend and I by the local host we were staying with. Tucked in an alleyway, this is the type of place where you can ask for suggestions around any problem you are facing and they will suggest a tea to help. I told the owner that I wanted a tea that would give me more focused energy and he suggested "Princess with Dagger" a chocolate, sweet potato, hearty rooibos within seconds. This place is really hard to find. Walk around the corner from Ruby Jewel's, past She Bop, and into the alley. It is worth finding, perhaps after you've shopped for that special someone next door... I thought at first that this place was too expensive. But I also didn't realize they weren't simply going to pour hot water into a pot with 4 tea bags and call it good. Each cup we had in our 'service' was individually prepared by hand from a variety of very interesting teas, such as Wizard's Eyebrow, Snow Falls on Monkey, etc. Hands down, this is the best tea I have experienced. No bitterness (from tea or staff!), great flavors and scents, great experience. Stick all that in a chill place with tarot cards and friendly people, you have a place that you want to hang out in for hours, if not days!! So if you are a bit nervous about bringing home that new toy from She Bop, and need to chill for a bit while you think of an answer to the question of "You're putting what, where?"? This place is perfect. Tip 1: We'll definitely be back, our only regret was that we only had about 20 minutes, and that just doesn't do the experience justice. Plan for at least 30 minutes. This is an incredible and unique place. With a group of four other girls during my bachelorette weekend, we came here extremely hungover and struggling and Kevin welcomed us with open arms. He recommended me a tea to help me with my physical state, and it worked. Maybe it was the placebo effect, but even so I would come here anytime if it made me feel that much better. We loved the first tea so much that we stayed for another. This time, Kevin recommended a tea for abundance in my upcoming marriage and told us the beautiful story underlying the tea. I ended up buying some of this tea to bring home. This tea shop makes me wish I lived in Portland! I now have a tea subscription and have enjoyed all of the teas they have shipped. Which is ok because I guess calling is good... but they never seem to answer the phone. So I message them on Instagram and they said I could buy the tea I was looking for that way, so I gave them my shipping address and asked the best way to pay them. I guess something about that was uncool or something because they ghosted me after that. Would "see" all my messages and refuse to respond. We came in on Christmas Eve after shopping and eating on Mississippi Ave for a nice tea before home. Server was rude, no greeting. The first thing he asked was if we wanted our tea to go. It was so uncomfortable, I actually checked the time to make sure we didn't just come in as they were closing. The tea was expensive and served scalding hot. He immediately walked back upstairs to continue his conversation without so much as a thank you. We were so uncomfortable, we left immediately. After 20 minutes, the tea was still scalding so we took the tops off and one accidentally spilled. It was still so hot it burned my leg. We won't be returning and we are posting this review so no one else will either. With so many wonderful choices in Portland, don't waste time here. read more

It's more a salon than a coffee-shop, meaning that you will be welcome to join the conversation, like you are at the Cheers of tea. Soon, everyone will know your name. An enormous tea menu to choose from in a cozy and comfortable space. The person who helped us make our selection was very kind and extremely knowledgeable. We really enjoyed the tea that we shared and the service was incredible. The person who helped us joked that they would "keep pouring tea for us forever". We stayed for about 90 minutes. I must have drank more tea than I ever have in one sitting in my life. Although we chose to sit in the loft space, like magic, my cup was always replenished nearly as soon as I set it down empty on the table. That was impressive! I just went here for the first time with my friend Rick. This was Rick's idea. I had never heard of the place before. But I figured it was worth a shot. We walked down a cute driveway to this small structure at the back of a house and a garden. When we came in the proprietor was giving a tarot reading to someone. On the counter where we ordered tea, they had a little bowl of merit badges, where you could pick a badge, tell them why you merited it, and then get the badge! They also had little zines about how to achieve your dreams. It was then that I knew I was going to love this place. But how is the tea? I hear you asking. In a word, phenomenal. Indian chai straight from Indian Chaiwalla carts that the owners lived near in India. It comes unsweetened, and you have a choice of different sweetners there. I also tried Chinese Red Robe Wu Yi Oolong, which we got for free, from the proprietor of the shop! He was also kind enough to share the history of this tea. We spent a happy hour reading poetry, laughing and drinking tea. My friend also got a samosa that he really liked too. When we asked the proprietor what his reasoning was behind this teashop, he said, "I come from Iowa, where people are neighborly. That means we want to create gathering places for our friends to come together and help each other achieve our dreams." He continued, "We are in Portland now, where people are very friendly, but they are not necessarily neighborly. They will be kind and polite to you, but you won't necessarily get invited to their houses." So I said, "Wow, you've created a place to help people achieve their dreams" and he said, "Yes. Also a place for me to tell stories! We've only been going since May but it's come along very well. We've had some good musical acts here as well as connections with people who lived next door to each other for 30 years and never knew they had similar hobbies!" I love his vision for this teashop, and I love the tea, and I love the positive vibes of the place. Do you think you'd like some excellent tea and more friends in your life? You know how when something is so wonderful that you think, I have to Yelp about this place...?! We were invited to Fly Awake to meet with friends to discuss wedding ceremony plans. We sat outside under the shelter of a beautiful sprawling tree in the garden and were served delicious hot cup after cup of tea chosen by the proprietor. (You can always choose your own but he says it is nice to share a specific tea if it is group gathering so everyone benefits from the same medicine from the tea.) Oh wow, this is a great place to relax outdoors. This quiet and peaceful spot is just a few blocks from Whole Foods on Fremont. I came for chai but stayed to unwind and try some samples that Kevin (one of the owners) gave me. I really enjoyed the uniqueness and quality of the tea selections. There were some very rare treats that Kevin was happy to discuss. I highly recommend the lime iced tea. Bring a book! read more
