I called first thing in the morning and Michael gave me all the answers to my questions. I have gone to smiths repair shop for about about 4 yrs and WAS somewhat happy with them, and had sent several of my friends to them. 6 /14/19 I stopped in to see what they would charge me to put on a part that I had already purchased. The counterman indicated he didn't have time to do it for me and and he didn't like to put on parts people brought him basically because he can't make the mark up on the parts that I bring in ,only of the parts he gets . he wasn't interested in helping me he was just interested in how much could he make even though I was an existing customer and this is the only time I've come in with a part I bought and I want to have put on my car . It appears they are only interested in how much they can make every time you come in they don't want to be helpful. Having just relocated from out of state I needed to do one of the three things relocated people MUST do: Find a competent physician, find a hair-stylist that you can work with and.... .....find an honest auto repair service with integrity. Yesterday brought us to the third of these items. After consulting the 'Oracle of Yelp' and asking some area residents that I work with, I called Smith Specialty Automotive and spoke with the owner, Dave. My wife's car had a fuel system problem. he invited us to bring it over and if they weren't too busy at the time they would take it in, and give a return ride back home. My wife did so. When the car appeared they were able to take it in, hook it up for a computer analysis and determined that it was contaminated gasoline that was really the problem. The advice? Drive around a lot and use up the gas. He then told us the best gas stations around where we lived to purchase 'good' gas. Went to settle up, and we were told--no charge! I had an appt to take both cars in for an oil change on a Tuesday morning. Dropped the cars at 8 am. Called the shop at 1030 am to see how much longer and Jordan said 30-45 min so we got to the shop around 11 am happy to wait a little bit for the cars to be done. Jordan announced that the car was done but only one car was finished??? I was surprised to say the least. It had been 3 hours and only one car was finished?? It was only an oil change. Jordan started to give me lots of excuses why only one car was done....I asked him...why when I called he did not say that only one car would be done in the next 30-45 min?? I have been going to Smith's for over 15 years. I asked Jordan to have Dave, the owner, give me a call back but I never received a call back. Smith has lost a 4 car customer b/c of poor customer service, bad communication and no call back from the owner. read more

They told me the AC in my ML320 has to be changed for over $1000.00 the manager of Jiffy Lube while changing my oil fixed the AC leak by changing a leaky washer for free and recharging it. We took our truck there, called first and told them the problem. We had the truck at a different shop, they told us we needed a new motor. We were devastated, being that we recently purchased the truck in October. When we decided not to have the motor replaced we took the truck home and suddenly it kept dying. Loss of lights, radio all power. It must be the alternator. How much is that?? The last shop charged us $500 to fix nothing and tell us to get a new motor. We took chance with Smith's. Told them to do a diagnostic and an 80 point inspection and dreading the thought of now an alternator replacement. Only two hours after dropping it off, Smith's called. "Did you have this truck somewhere else?" Yes we replied. The person on the other end said, ahh they didn't hook the battery to the alternator they way they should have, other than that your truck is fine. I am going to let it run a while and make sure you have no other problems. Two hours later they called again, "good news" its ready. Truck is in good shape. So thankful we did not replace the motor with that last shop, if they cant hook up a battery, no idea the problems the motor would have caused us. No Smith's did not really do any mechanic work on our vehicle. I cannot attest to that. But what I can attest to is that they were honest. They have been blessed to be in a position to keep transportation reliable for the common person, and they did that...with no extra bells and whistles. We say thanks. I took my car to Smith Specialty for an oil leak. It turned out to be a major repair and thus quite expensive. That's not my issue with Smith Specialty as it would have turned out that way wherever I went. My issue was with their lack of follow- through. First, they ordered a part that for some reason took about two days longer than expected to get delivered. However, the only reason I knew of the delay was because I called. They didn't call me. Second, they realized after starting the repair that another part needed to be ordered. Finally, after several days of renting a car, they finished up the job. What should have taken a few days turned into almost two weeks. I got the car back and there was still an oil leak. It was small, but still. So why not less than three stars? They were very nice, apologetic, and to be fair, they tried hard. They also covered the cost of the rental car. The oil leak afterwards was unfortunate, but perhaps not entirely unavoidable. So, had the experience been smoother and had they proactively contacted me about the delays, I would definitely have given four or five stars. As it stands, I was disappointed and never went back. read more

The past 3 times I have taken my car there, there has been some kind of issue. Once they installed new wiper blades, then charged me for them, when I DID NOT ASK for new wiper blades. Another time, they forgot (yes, I said forgot) to do my oil change. The car sat there all day, and at the end of the day when I did not get a call that it was finished, I called them. And they said they had forgotten about it, and could I either leave it overnight (for an oil change? Come on!) or could I come back tomorrow. The third (and last straw) experience was when I was getting a fuel injector replaced, and they took the car apart, then went on break or something and never went back to it. I called at the end of the day, having not heard from them, and they said they had "gotten sidetracked" and they had not finished the repair (though I had dropped it at 8 a.m., with an appointment), and they asked if I need my car or if I knew someone whose car I can borrow until the next afternoon, since my car was already taken apart. What?? I have since found a new mechanic. read more

They did make an attempt to remedy the situation. As of today 8/23/2016 (40 days since it was *fixed* the second time) the A/C is not working. I guess we will be returning AGAIN. read more

I have taken my 2007 Honda Ridgeline to the same "hometown" mechanic since it was purchased new in 2007. I have since moved to Johnson County and needed to find a closer mechanic that I could trust. I found Smith Automotive on Angie's list and Yelp and they had very favorable reviews so I gave them a try. I was very happy with their communication and service. They did the repair as needed and everything turned out great. They made us feel comfortable through their communication throughout the process. They also researched various manufacturer's parts to get the least expensive version of the parts required without sacrificing quality. They are easy to talk to and will explain in detail what needs to be done before the job is undertaken and then explain what they found during the work. An honest mechanic. What a joy to find. Walked in uncertain, walked away with a $375 bill which fixed what another mechanic has failed to fix twice, plus an oil change. Dave is great. We also needed body work done on our other car, which Smith's doesn't do, but they did recommend Howard Auto Body in KC Mo (part owner of Smiths is an owner of Howard). They did a repair job for $1,300 which another body shop quoted $3,100 for. Just can't say enough about trusting your mechanic. Highly recommend. read more

Called to get a quote on a scheduled service. Received quote, called back to verify quote before I made an appointment. Verified same quote. After vehicle was dropped off I received a call stating that the original quote did not include everything and that the cost was $150 more. Scheduled services are not like repairs where sometimes additional work has to be done. Scheduled services should be straight forward enough that there should not be that much of a fluctuation in price if any. Obviously wasn't happy with the news, felt that the expectation had been set and because of lack of thoroughness I received a surprise which I did not care for. Left feedback for Dave, the owner via the survey that he sent me and in his response he proceeded to tell me that my feedback was inaccurate. The intent of my feedback was to call out a legitimate issue. Dave, please do not solicit feedback from customers if you aren't willing to take the constructive with the good and apply it to your business. read more

After diagnosing a bad ABS module on a Thursday, Mark ordered a part for me and said it would be in Monday/Tuesday, quoting~$500. I called Monday and it had not arrived - I asked that he let me know when it arrived. No call Tuesday, no call Wednesday... I called him on Wednesday afternoon and was told the part arrived on Tuesday. I brought my car in on Thursday and was told the job would take 2-2.5 hours. After 4 hours I gave them a call to check on the status and was told they had "run into a snag" - the part they had ordered did not fit my vehicle. Mark said it wouldn't be fixed that day and he would look for another part and try to get me a loaner vehicle, which I appreciated and felt to be their responsibility. An hour later I was informed not only would they not be able to get another part until the following Monday but they couldn't get my car back together that day to give me transportation to work but that they also did not have a loaner vehicle. Leaving me without transportation (which I had earlier in the day) for 4 more days when I was told the job would take 2.5 hours did not seem acceptable. I asked to speak to the owner, Dave, and Mark replied, "Where is this going?" I called back two times that night asking to speak with Dave and was told he wasn't there the first time and in a meeting the second. I called the next morning and left a message, asking that Dave return my call. Instead, I got a call from Mark on Friday telling me they had put the defective part back on the vehicle, which we had discussed. I still need to get this fixed, but Smith Specialty will not be the ones to do the work. I never received a call from Dave - I'm not sure if this was not viewed as important or if the messages were never delivered. I will not return to Smith Specialty and would advise others look for a mechanic that will make an effort to rectify a mistake on their part rather than put the burden on the consumer. read more
