A compass etched into concrete, indicating the direction of where various tribes originated

First opened in the late 1920s, Smith Park is San Gabriel's old public green space. But thanks to a $3-million improvement project two decades ago, this park has modern amenities utilized well by the many who visit. Amenities: * Separate playgrounds for young children and older children * Outdoor pool * 2 lighted tennis courts * 4 lighted handball courts * Lighted full basketball court * Picnic areas with tables and BBQ grills * Lots of walkways and grassy space * Free WiFi But this isn't just a park. Interwoven into the park's architecture are design elements celebrating the Tongva Native Americans, later renamed the Gabrielinos, who lived in this area. For instance, the concrete dolphins, sea lions and whale in one corner of the park symbolize the Tongvas' connection to the sea. And the gazebos covering picnic tables were modeled after their domed huts. Plaques scattered around the park tell a bit of the Tongva history. During these quarantine times, tennis is limited while the playgrounds and handball and basketball courts are closed. The bathrooms are also closed for remodeling. Notwithstanding, this park is a terrific asset to the community, and will be all the more after this covid craziness is over. Smith Park is a large park in the middle of San Gabriel. Obviously not as big as Almansor but still big for a neighborhood park. Good sized kids play ground. They have a swimming pool as well. Some what well kept. Not as clean as the other parks I have been to in the area. Street parking was tough, was really busy on the weekend. Good for parties or just to play.

I took my son to the park to go swimming today and I was refused to be allowed to sit on the side because simply I didn't have a bathing suit on but there are multiple people inside the area that are not wearing bathing suits but I was told I was still unable to come in and watch my son swim I had to watch him from outside the gate simply because they wouldn't allow me to pay the fee just to sit there and watch him!

This is a nice small park in a tranquil neighborhood.

Many dogs walking around too so super pet friendly with trash bags and bins. There are 2 big playgrounds and a fitness center as well. There's also a little rose garden! Of course Rosemead had to have roses haha. Parking is convenient either street parking or parking in the basketball court or swimming pool lots. There are couple public restrooms open at night. The area feels very safe and well lit. I saw people dancing, baseball and soccer teams practicing and many people going out on their daily walks. I'd imagine it would be a great place for bbq as well during the day. Little details matter. Great job city of rosemead. Bugs and mosquitos love me but I managed to not get a single bite!! The gazebo is powered by solar which is pretty cool. Water fountains are dog friendly. I can't think of any improvements haha keep up the good work!

Plenty to do besides walking, basketball, swimming, playing sports on the greens, skate (skate park), and many more! Hubby & I pass by this park almost daily since we stayed at an Airbnb for about 3 months just a few blocks away. Before 6 am, I see many residents walking already. At night I see many also play basketball at the courts. It sort of reminds me of Cerritos' Liberty Park. The walking/running area has the soft cement just like Liberty Park, easy on the feet. There's a playground for children. The grass is lush & green. We parked on the street, free. There is a designated parking lot for this park. I can see Hubby & I doing our walks here. Great park. The swim gym has 12 lanes. Will look into whatever else they offer when I visit it during the day time hours.

This park is a great gathering and refresh place for the community of San Gabriel for leisure exercise nature walks for children and adults alike. There is a couple of playgrounds located inside Vincent Lugo Park, one of which is La Laguna playground with huge animal shaped installments for children to play & explore and a regular playground with swings & climbing/jungle gyms. For adults, there are outdoor exercise equipment, which I saw are located in two separate places.. There are more nooks & crannies for me to explore that I may find in my next visit. Picnic tables are found some shaded some not, bbq grills, too. Additionally, there are covered tables and chairs as well for the community to hold parties or any kind of celebration. Walking paths are available, both cement & ground (clay-like). I noticed that there were a few sets of people doing tai chi-a few of them brought their music to coordinate their movements.
