For those who dont like TVs playing news in waiting areas, this place doesnt do that. I have a long history of dental care and I've spent many hours in a dentist chair since childhood, but I'm no longer apprehensive about coming for my visits since I've been coming here. I saw a ton of people complaining about appointments not being kept, all I can say is that this hasn't been me experience at all, not only have my appointments been kept promptly, but I have had to call multiple times over the past few months for emergency appointments due to some dental issues that I'm working on fixing, on almost every occasion they have gotten me in that same morning for my emergency, the could times they couldn't do that, they fit me in that same week. My bad experiences with my prior dentist involved things like failed root canals, placing a crown on a tooth that needed root canal treatment, without realizing the tooth needed a root canal, then getting a lump on my gums and having to drill a hole through the brand new crown to do that root canal. To make matters even worse, they put a filling in the root canaled crown which leaked for who knows how long, destroyong the tooth and requiring extraction. This same dentist also placed a crown that didn't cover all of my tooth on the inside portion of my mouth, I didn't find out until it was too late and that tooth also required extraction. My daughter had a root canal that also failed, she ended up going to a specialist for retreatment. All of this and more happened in a 2 year period with this dentist. This is what a 1 star dentist experience looks like, Byrd dental is definitely not a 1 star dentist.

The hygienist Rae (?), was AMAZING. She was super friendly. She took a full set of x-rays since I was a new patient and then gave me a pair of sunglasses to put on before she started my cleaning. They had numerous flavor options for the polishing paste. I was offered cherry, vanilla, mint and cookie dough. She checked on my comfort numerous times while she was working and was very thorough. There is a large flat-screen TV hanging high in front of the chair so you can watch TV while they work on your teeth. Once she completed the cleaning, Dr. Thackenkary came in to do the final examination. He did a complete oral cancer screen and checked the condition of my jaw, teeth and bite. He also explained about the pH of my saliva and how it helped to prevent cavities, which was interesting. He did not try to "sell" me anything else, like tooth whitening. Every other dentist I've been to has always tried to get me to pay for something else. Dr. Thackenkary advised me to come back in 6 months for my next routine visit and gave me a goodie bag with a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss and mouthwash. Neither Dr. Thackenkary or Rae were condescending or rude. I've been to some dentists who get a bit nasty when they are telling you about your teeth and if there is any plaque or anything. Not these two! Rae just explained how to better floss my bottom molars to help prevent buildup in the future. Overall, I was extremely pleased with my visit. Friendly staff and straightforward dental care. I highly recommend others visit Opal Ridge Dental for their dental needs. You'll be pleased.

Over the past 10 years I've moved around a lot and I've gone to...I think five other dentists. Family Smile Center is the only office that really stands out for being very thorough, using technology, and telling me information beyond just, "you have some cavities, and you grind your teeth." People there talked to me about oral cancer, tooth enamel, the health of my gums, TMJ, sensitivity...and the list goes on and on. The hygienist talks to you first, and then one of the doctors comes in to check and chat. The hygienists at Family Smile Center are great though, and you can tell that the doctors trust them to do a good job. The hygienists have advanced degrees in dental stuff too, so it's not like they're just some intern with a water pik. It was because of them that I FINALLY found floss that I could use on a regular basis without causing my gums to bleed. I FINALLY decreased my tooth sensitivity so I could eat cold things again. I live almost an hour away from Family Smile Center now but I still go there twice a year because they're worth the drive. They're awesome! I have a small mouth and my teeth are not great. Going to the dentist is pretty scary for me. My fear of having my throat blocked up is pretty strong. Family Smile Center is the only dentist I've gone to where I haven't panicked about that sort of thing.

Let's start with the fact that they've changed Dentists more times than I can remember and hygienists are the same. They'll always try to tell you that you need 5 or more fillings and yet when I've gotten checked elsewhere they all tell me they were just trying to make money off me. This brings me to my next issue. I made an appointment far in advance. They called a few times to confirm it but I was sick and dealing with other medical issues at the time. So, I get a text the day BEFORE my appointment saying my appointment has been canceled because they couldn't confirm it. I thought ok well that's fine. Then they send me a lovely bill for a missed appointment fee. When they call back, Mckenzie, starts the conversation by saying I violated the financial policy by not calling, it is what it is, we'll send it to collections if we have to etc. I told her, listen, I have never missed an appointment you can check my history, and you all canceled the day before I have the text message to prove it so why would I have shown up? Her disrespectful, catty response? "Well you could have called, you have a responsibility too." Which i replied, "yea my responsibility was staying alive because I was sick. I didn't prioritize a dental cleaning appointment but im telling you that's what happened. You assume some of us are just lazy or careless and that's poor customer service but that wasn't the case here." She held on to her anger and disgustingly cold approach and said she'd send the balance to collections which I said, go right ahead. It will go no where and cost them more in the long run because not only is there a fee associated with sending it there, they have lost a customer and everyone affiliated with me because I'll make sure everyone I care about knows to stay far away from this "practice". My reach in Frederick and neighboring counties goes wide, and I'll make sure people dont get scammed by this atrocious place or its people. If you want: 1.
