The smashed burgers are exactly what you want, crispy edges, juicy center, perfectly seasoned, and stacked just right The wings are just as good. Great texture, cooked perfectly, and the homemade sauces are unreal. You can tell they're made in-house. Every one I've tried has real flavor and depth, not that generic "straight from a bottle" taste. What really sets this place apart, though, are the guys who run it. They're genuinely kind, they remember people, and you can tell they care about the neighborhood. It doesn't feel corporate or transactional. These smash burgers earned fans reviews from my entire family of six which ranged from the pickiest 11 year old to be dragged outside the Mac and cheese world to the 19 year old with a laundry list of things that are better than whatever food spot chosen by his mother. The burgers are exactly what makes a smash burger crave-able--360 degrees of razor-thin, crispy edges with a juicy center portion; buttered and grilled buns whose crispy outer ends intersect beautifully with the meat to create the most amazing bites. The meat is seasoned perfectly. The fries are shoestring and crisp. And although the prices seem steep (classic smash burger runs you $17), the fries they come with it are generously portioned and the meat far exceeds the edges of the bun, proving that they serve you a hearty helping of burger. I went to this place 1 time and I thought it was the best burger I've ever had. I came in again and it was terrible. The burger was small and barley any sauce was used. it was one of the biggest disappointments ever Espically when my first experience was so good. Really bad service. They were at Trax farms recently and were telling people it would be 30 minutes for a smash burger. This was after you would wait in the line for 20-30 minutes, making it an almost hour long process to get your food. They also seemed to have an attitude with the customers, despite everyone putting up with the poorly ran system. On top of the long ticket times, there was no organization. They don't take your name or give you a number when taking your order for some reason. So when the food is done, they just shout out the order, which leads to co fusion because most people are getting burgers. Eventually they told everyone that chicken tenders were the only thing that was taking less than 20 minutes. Two orders of chicken tenders and fries was a crazy $34. I hate to admit that I liked this place for all the shit I talk on smash burgers, but I banged with this place so much. It's rare that I ever like one. I like a thick patty cooked bloody rare. Cant get that with a smashed. They're always overly salted with some average sauce, and never seasoned well. This place did not bring that. Patties not overly salted, house sauce had a little extra love in it, onions sautéed beautifully and who doesn't love a Martin's potato roll. You'll see they don't offer lettuce or tomatoes. That's because they know their burger only needs to be done one way and that'll bring you right back French fries were McDonald's on steroids. Insane crisp on each one and they were beyond generous with the portions. Those queso fries I'll be having wet dreams about It was me and 6 other people in there. Strangest thing ever. Went there at 7::30 on a Saturday. You wait in line to order. No one was at the counter. My buddy who was gonna order left. He came back to the bar. I went to bathroom and got in the line. No one came to counter..... finally they came. And we still waited and waited to just order. Their food truck was at Stick City Brewery today (also a great place!). My wife and I showed up at 5pm and they were so popular throughout the day they were almost out of all their food! They had enough meat for two burgers for my wife and I. The person working in the food truck made sure he could try and get us the burgers. The new "Smashed 'n Fried" burger joint, which promised to be the hip new thing occupying the old Hough's building in the back of Mondays Brewing, is atrocious. One of the worst burgers I've ever had in my life - overcooked, salty as hell, dripping with grease - and for $17. Everything on the menu is overpriced, and you'll wait forever for it. What's so disappointing about this is that this neighborhood, which is very much a family neighborhood (A Fine Residential Community™), is starved for a place to sit down to eat a meal. All we've got are a few mediocre pizza places, a Chinese takeout spot, and bars. But my kids wouldn't even touch the burger (they did eat the fries, which are $9 for the same thing you get at McDonald's), and another kid with us said the salty burger gave her a headache. I asked the folks at Smashed 'n Fried if they were planning to add any kid-friendly options (you know, instead of buying a huge $17 burger for a kid - I split one between two) or vegetarian options (pretty standard in 2025), and the response was "Our menu is our menu." Basically, "f--- off." This isn't Lawrenceville or the South Side, where drunk young adults will stumble in and eat whatever because they're trying to sober up. What we needed was someplace a family could go, even if it's in a brewpub. Instead, we got trash, and I expect even Mondays Brewing will suffer too as families go elsewhere - Sly Fox, East End, any number of beer places with decent food - to fit their needs and their budget. read more
