I had a great experience at this Smashburger location in Tempe Marketplace! The employees were helpful, friendly and patient with me as I decided on what I wanted. The dining room was empty so my friend and I had the whole place to ourselves for a while. The last minute shoppers started to creep in as we left, but our meal was made fresh and delicious! Everything was seasoned perfectly and my burger tasted way better than it looked. I admit I was a bit underwhelmed when it was brought to me, but once I took that first bite, I was reminded that I shouldn't judge a book by its cover, lol. It was the perfect size as I didn't want to overwhelm myself since I also got the Smashtots. I do wish the cheese on top wasn't a melted shredded cheese, but a cheese sauce instead. Other than that, I ate every bit of my burger and tots. My friend also agreed that everything tasted great. It's been years since I've last had Smashburger and for some reason I was craving it yesterday. I was a little worried because from what I last remember, I had a not so good experience with the food. We walked in and I quickly noticed that they had remodeled the inside since the last time I stopped by. It's now more spacious and feels open. I had the classic smashburger, my mom had the grilled chicken sandwich with mushrooms, and my sister had a double bacon smashburger. We ordered a side of onion rings and a regular side of truffle fries. The employee let us know that the soda machine was down for the day and only Aguas Frescas were available. We needed something to drink while we ate so we said that was fine. The food was brought out to us and he kindly asked us if we needed anything else. We asked for ranch and he brought us two. We then began to eat. My burger was REALLY GOOD. The meat had a lot of flavor, was hot, and cooked well. My moms chicken sandwich was juicy and flavorful. My sisters bacon burger was also delicious and the slices of bacon were big. We enjoyed our meal and left stuffed. The portions were big and the food was delicious. When we walked in, Smashburger looked good. Floors and walls were clean and there weren't a bunch of dirty tables and funky odors. First impression = 5 stars. Burgers and chicken sandwich were OK, not great, but edible. 3 stars. Fries and tater tots both had the same funky flavor, like the oil they were fried had a problem of some kind. 1 star. I have been to this location quite a few times and in my opinion it gets worse every time I visit. Today my friend and I each ordered the crispy chicken sandwich and it was okay, but not as good as they used to be. The smash tots that we shared were just dripping in grease! We used up about 6 napkins each soaking up some of the grease. We agreed that we made a mistake by not just sending them back and my friend ended up taking stomach medication as soon as we got to the car. As a student at ASU, I organized a fundraiser night at this Smashburger location, and the experience has been nothing but a nightmare. I've been trying to contact the store for over a week to follow up, but nobody ever picks up the phone, even during slow hours. The one time I did manage to speak with someone--a manager-I was told to call back. Since then, l've called every single day with no response. Today, I finally got through to a chef who casually said, "Yeah, I don't know what to tell you, but I can't help you." So now this company refuses to work with me and give a check from our fundraiser that they agreed on. read more

Smash burger use to be one of my favorite burger spots back when they first came to AZ. Now it seems the flavor is gone, the burgers are smaller, and the prices are higher. Today I ordered a double bacon cheeseburger and smash fries. The meat was flavorless, the bun was soaked, the bacon was not crispy, the fries had no seasoning on them and tasted very stale. The Colorado burger is a seasonal item, and I highly recommend you go get it. It's the perfect combination of ingredients and it's huge. Also love their sweet potato fries. Not too thin, and very sweet. Got their side of brussel sprouts to share as well, and I really don't understand how it's 400 calories, but it's really good and filling. Pretty consistent and reliable. The cleanliness of the restaurant could use some work its always so dirty and out of stock on everything.

Food aside (which is on par with what you'd expect), this is one of the most poorly managed restaurants that I've eaten at in a long time. I first tried this place a few weeks ago, and the food was average as expected, but the service was horrible. This time, we had to wait a good 10-15 minutes with no movement in the line, and there were so many irate customers that several were chewing out the workers. This place sucks. Got to the front desk and NEVER got greeted, the "host" was facing the complete opposite way and when she did notice someone picking up an order she still completely ignored us. She took it to the front to prove to them what she found and she just responded with "I can remake your food" no apology or anything. I have eaten at this location on numerous occasions and it's always been very good. Today I found 3 extremely long hairs in my burger after only 2 bites. This is very disgusting as I am a short haired guy and what I found was 100% not mine. The fact I found 3 is completely absurd and a health violation. Wow. I'm even Having troubles understanding how bad it could be. I should've read the reviews before I went. First, we spent almost a $100 for 5 hamburgers and sides. Second, we waited over 30 minutes for them. Third, our fries were sitting under a lamp for those 30 minutes. They were cold. They were limp. They tasted pretty good after throwing them in the oven for a bit. Fourth, we got home and realized we were a hamburger short. We had to go back and the hamburger was sitting up under that same lamp. The employee said they were sorry and explained that they were short-staffed. I can completely relate to that and can understand. That might be enough reason but I don't intend to ever return. Fifth, my burger was charcoal almost and my wife's was undercooked. So all and all, can't see how I can give this place more than a lone, single star. read more

The burger I ordered was made perfectly, not too burnt and not undercooked. It had a chipotle mayo which added a great zest to the burger paired with the jalapeño slices. I really enjoyed the burger because although I got a single patty, it was just enough to pair with the sweet potato fries and I didn't feel overstuffed at the end of the meal. The fries were prepared perfectly. Highly recommend this location, the staff were more attentive and seemed to be eager to help with any issues we had or any adjustments we may have wanted. Buffalo and Blue Please!!! My first visit, and now I'm addicted! Great quality and great tasting burgers. I got the chicken buffalo blue and my friend got the original smashburger. We both loved it! They have a nice variety to fit any dietary needs, even for vegitarians. Update: So they completely changed their menu and now you can't get your favorite. Even the staff agrees.
