First visit and I have to say it was good one. I did a takeout order of a classic smash and made it a combo. The lady that helped me was super nice. The fries were amazing!!! I'm a fry-snob (if there is such a thing), and these were delicious and fresh. To the hamburger, well cheeseburger, this is where the star gets deducted. Didn't realize the burger came with cheese automatically, so I didn't think to have it taken off. So I had to take it off while I was in my car-didn't check before I left. Honestly a 4.5 and only because I'm not a fan of fried eggs on my food unless it's for breakfast. Which isn't their fault, it's a personal preference. And while the burgers, fries, tots and fried brussel sprouts are all amazing, the staff is super friendly and helpful...I've been here 4 times the first the burger I wanted couldn't be sold because they were out of guacamole, today I couldn't order a salad due to being yanked off the production line because 4 people had order salads just before we got there. To me the manager needs to be better prepared. 2 out of 4 visits to have something 86'd at a food establishment of this caliber is ridiculous. Just saying....Plan a little better please! I am so ticked off! I usually love Smashburger, not today and I don't know if I'll be back because of this. We ordered a regular spinach and goat cheese burger with no onions and instead we get a double patty bacon and cheese burger with nothing on it! Are you serious??? I feel like Smashburger is like In n Out; you're either crazy about it or it's just another burger joint. For me it was the later. I got the Dominion which was really tasty but nothing extraordinary. It wasn't even that busy but somehow it took 20 mins or so to get our food and almost 20 dollars for 2 people. Not worth it. Super thin peice of chicken, 2 peices of lettuce for the wrap, and the fries were shoe string. A lettuce wrap as a bun needs more than 2 pieces. Completely fell apart. Me and my family decided to try SmashBurger for the first time. We were very excited the menu was great and the food looked delicious!! I ordered the basic hamburger with tater tots and a cookies and cream shake. We got our food ToGo. We went home and ate our food..which was ok. After reading some reviews about this place (which killed some time during our 30-minute wait for our food), I concur with a lot of what I read. I get the theme of smashing the burgers, which makes them thin but I also agree that the pricing is too high. I tried the buffalo and bleu cheese burger which was okay. It might have been better if the burger was seasoned. My wife tried the turkey burger and that, too, was bland. I've had better sweet potato fries in many other places. The menu is a little overwhelming for first timers and the staff didn't offer any assistance when we told them we had never been here before and needed a few minutes to figure our order out. I ordered the Buffalo & Blue Cheese burger and my husband ordered the Big Cheese Burger. The price for each burger was roughly $7 each and to add a combo to each burger is an additional $4.29. We always just share a drink, so we ordered a large fry and a medium drink. We ended up paying $21 for 2 burgers, 1 fry, & 1 drink. The wait wasn't bad for everything being cooked to order. Not too bad when you think that's about what you would pay at Five Guys, but we weren't super impressed with what we got. I've read other reviews that said Five Guys was better, and we both totally agree. I do like the wide variety of toppings they have and everything tasted really fresh. They have a very large outdoor patio area which was great too. Overall, while I would eat here again, I would hit up a Five Guys before I came back to Smash Burger. read more

My 2nd visit to this location prompted this review. During my 1st visit ever to a Smashburger (this location), I received poor customer service. The burger itself (meat and bun) and "smash fries" were good, however, I did not receive what I ordered. Several extra-charge toppings were missing from the burger I ordered. When I told the server, she acted like I was mistaken and asked to see the receipt. The receipt proved I was right and the burger was taken back for correction. The burger I received next was also missing a topping I ordered, but by then, enough of my time had been wasted, so I just ate the 2nd burger. I tried the same location today (2nd visit). I paid close attention while ordering at the register and made sure my receipt reflected all the toppings I ordered. While waiting for my order at my table, an altercation occurred between two people at a register. They had to be separated by an employee. My order finally arrived and once again, it wasn't even close to what I ordered. Two extra-charge toppings were missing and two toppings I didn't order were on the burger. I took the burger back to a server with my receipt and asked for a correction. When the server bought my burger back it was still incorrect, missing 1 extra-charge item. Again, too much of my time had been wasted, so I just ate the burger. When a server asked me how my meal was, I told her that the order was never made correctly. She told me their registers were new and they were in the process of troubleshooting a disconnect between the initial orders taken at the register and what actually happens in the kitchen. After I left the establishment, I realized that the server had not returned my receipt after she took it to supposedly help the kitchen staff correctly make my order. I don't know whether this was done intentionally to prevent me from giving bad feedback at the Smashburger website. But fortunately, yelp.com is here for folks like myself to vent and provide feedback that other potential patrons may find helpful. At no time was I approached (at either visit) by anyone identifying themselves as a manager, offering compensation for my inconvenience or their mistakes. My experiences during both visits were unfortunate, because the basic burger (meat and bun) and the "smash fries" were actually pretty good. It was the service and attention-to-detail that were lacking. So far this location is two-for-two in providing sub-par service. I was super stoked Smashburger was opening a location here in Hampton Roads. I haven't been to one since I moved here 2 years ago. But it was seriously not worth my time. The food wasn't to bad. I love their fries! But the service was the worst I've seen/had in awhile. The lady that was expo'ing was just yelling out what she needed on both sides of the rail and you could hear her through the whole restaurant. They had no idea what orders were out and what orders still needed to be done. I waited about 30 minutes for a burger and fries to go. Which was a little excessive. Two people ahead of me just requested their money back because they were taking to long. I would definitely wait until they get their sh** together before going to eat here.
