While the food is tasty when they don't mess up the order, the portions are significantly smaller than before ESPECIALLY the milkshakes is HALF the size of what it used to (not being dramatic) for the same price ($1.50 extra for a combo) while messing both trays. We are doing work in the Hampton area and I'm 5 hours out of town my boss said there was a cookout right down the street from the job site. I was so excited I offered to pay for everyone because there aren't a lot in my area. He went and picked up 2 "treys". I ordered 2 chicken strips and fries and slaw. I really wanted to try Cook Out since it's only available in southern states. I'm really surprised by the number of negative reviews since I had a great experience. We came at 10:30am on a Sunday and I believe we were the first ones to order (big back activity). We got the tray combo, chicken Cajun sandwich, bacon wrap, corn dog, and a watermelon shake. Food came out in a few minutes, and everything was fresh and surprisingly not too greasy. Not sure if it's because we came early but the quality was pretty good for fast food and everything was only $10 so great value. My only complaint is that the chicken was a bit dry but other than that everything tasted great. Visited my first Cook Out place in NC and it was a pleasant experience. They have a large menu but it is easy to read so you can quickly make your choices. My second visit was in VA and the setup is pretty much the same with the large menu and all. One location just had drive thru to service the driver's side or passenger side. I cannot do it Every single friend of mine that I have met here in Virginia tells me about how good Cook Out is and How it's a great post club meal due to the cheap price and late night availability but I can't do it. I read a few of them and it seems like they all have a common theme: the food is great but the customer service is absolutely atrocious. The woman on the speaker box was getting frustrated because she couldn't hear our order. And when we repeated it, all we got in return was more attitude. When we pulled up to the window, they would ask us questions about our order and we'd again answer. But they'd snap back and say "cant hear you. What?" Very unprofessional. Then when we got our receipt they proceeded to crumble it up and give it to us. I feel like I'm not even welcome when I come here. Which is a shame because the food is great. At best, this CookOut is just okay. It doesn't have a seating area or inside so it is one of those dual drive-thru locations. I really prefer to sit inside and eat, so I only go to this location when I need something quick, cheap, and easy. They have gotten my order wrong twice here, during this experience and my last one here. Why do I continue to come back? We decided to try the cook out trays, my husband got a double burger with cheese, bacon, mayo and onion. His two sides were onion rings and a chicken wrap, he paid an extra dollar for a cappuccino shake. When he first tried the shake he said he couldn't tell if it was just regular vanilla or what he had ordered, as it melted he said he could taste the cappuccino more. Shakes are decent, definitely not as good as Steak 'n Shake or sonic. The onion rings were decent, I didn't think they had that much flavor, tasted pretty plain. We both laughed because his meal only came with four! We were expecting a little bit more. Bacon wrap had a lot of tortilla, didn't seem to have much bacon. He ended up giving it to me, the bacon was nice and crispy and had great flavor to it. He also said his burger was pretty good. I also had a tray with a pork sandwich, was overjoyed that she made sure if I wanted hot sauce or not, my meal would have been ruined if I had got home and had Texas Pete on my sandwich (can't stand hot sauce, so a big plus that she asked!). I also don't usually like slaw but it was actually really good on top of my sandwich, very yummy and flavorful. The chili portion size also seemed small because honestly it was delicious! I could have eaten a big bowl of it in no time. I got a decent amount of hush puppies compared to my husbands onion rings, they were also really good. Definitely will be returning, we probably won't do the cook out tray this time in hopes for bigger portion size. Before this visit, I've never been to Cookout since there are none in MD but have always heard awesome things about it. I finally got a chance to try it on our way to Fort Monroe. I ordered the Small burger Jr. Tray with French Fries and onion rings. I was impressed with the almost of food comes on the Jr tray. It was so much and best of all... it was under $5. The burger was great and the fries were fresh and hot. I could have went without the onion rings. They were horrible. Our service wasn't bad. We did have two orders, which made things complicated but the cashier got our orders correct. Definitely would go back to a Cookout location if I'm nearby.
