Changing Prices National self-storage companies use a system called "revenue management" to set their prices. At the national storage conventions, owners take classes about how to use this software to increase revenue by raising prices on customers. What is revenue management? This practice is what airlines and hotels use when they quote you a different rate for the same flight or room based on demand. Big storage companies do the same thing, reassessing their prices hourly. This means if they only have one 10 x 10 unit at the moment you check, it might be priced at $200 a month (compared to $100 last week). You can get the same unit at a company that is not using this software for much less. Why are they doing this? To make sure they are charging you the highest price they can get away with to maximize their revenue. 2. Increasing Rent All the Time When you sign a contract with one of these companies, you think that you've locked in a price for the rest of your lease, right? Not true. Almost all contracts in the self-storage industry are month-to-month. This means they can increase your rent at any time with a 30-day notice. National companies increase rent for current customers frequently, oftentimes twice a year. So, a unit you thought would be $70 per month suddenly costs you $115 per month. If you stay a year with that new rate, you'll be dishing out an extra $540 you hadn't budgeted for originally. 3. Charging High Fees National self-storage companies often reel you in with attractive pricing or a special but get you with fees. You may think you're paying only $70 per month, but wait, there's more: Admin fee ($20-$30) Lock charge ($20-$30) Late fees ($50-$60 for more than 30 days late) Deposit fee ($25-$45) Those fees add up, especially if you stay in your unit for a long time. Your bill inevitably ends up being much larger than you initially planned. 4. Ripping You Off with Insurance The big storage companies try to squeeze every possible penny out of you. One of the ways they do this is by requiring you to buy their storage insurance. While it seems like it adds value for customers, storage insurance is just an additional revenue stream for storage companies. Often, the insurance provider is the self-storage company. Other times, it's a third-party provider that gives the storage company a monthly kickback for selling policies. Public Storage automatically enrolls you in its insurance program, and you have to opt-out later to get out of it. They don't even offer good coverage. When you try to make a claim, you'll find the policy is selective in what it covers. Storage insurance is just an easy way for national storage chains to make an extra $15 to $25 per month from you. In fact, most renters have homeowners or renters' insurance that automatically covers items they've put in storage without additional cost. Our experience in managing 5,000 storage units is that it is very rare -- under 1% -- for something to happen that affects the contents of a storage unit. If you wrap your furniture in thick plastic wrap available on Amazon, and pack all your other items in plastic crates with tight lids, you will avoid almost all of the possible incidents that can affect your contents. That effort would eliminate rodent damage, mildew, and water damage, plus protect against absorbing the smell of the unit. The only thing left that could happen is theft. You have dropped your risk to .1%. Let's look at what would happen if you somehow incurred a loss: If you buy their insurance and stay for two years paying $25 extra a month, and if their policy covers the damage you incur, you have paid $600 for the insurance plus the $100 deductible. So you would have to experience over $700 in damage for it to help you. Do yourself a favor and spend $100 on packing supplies and rely on your homeowners or renters policy. 5. Making You Buy Their Expensive Lock Unfortunately, most national storage companies require you to buy their lock for $15-$20 (or more) instead of providing one to you free of charge. You can get the same lock at the local hardware store for $6.

The fuel/transport fee was above average especially given the move location was only a 2 miles distance. They added an extra mover the day off bc we have stairs. Though that was their decision, we were charged above the quoted rate for the additional person. I paid cash, which gave us a 10% discount but with all the extra fees, the 10% isn't much of a savings. I still tipped and nothing was broken or damaged during the move. They also arrived on time and helped taped boxes that needed additional reinforcement. Boxes were placed on the appropriate rooms based on the labels. I would hire them again but would budget for 15-20% more than what they quote.

Leaving most items unassembled and taped or boxed up. The lead mover even threatened and did leave unfinished because I asked if the bolts on my bed were being stripped, as I could hear the drill stripping them. Then attempted to charge double what was quoted, charging me extra for an additional mover I didn't request and for unnecessarily used tape. They literally wrapped tape around a mattress and taped up sofa pillows and charged me an additional $165 for packing supplies used. But somehow managed to scratch up my entire dinette, chairs included. Giving them 1 star is being generous; there is nothing professional about them.

Brian, the person manages the work came over have a look at the warehouse and gave us reasonable quote in comparison to 4 other companies in the area. The biggest issue we had was of scheduling because we decided in hurry that we need to move out of our area and taht made it hard to find the rigging company to un-install our platform and pilot equipment. However, BBRS were really came to rescue with good plan and reasonable prices. On the day of move, they brought their own equipment such as forklifts and other essential tools. I briefed them what needed to be done and what goes where and they finished everything in less time than I estimated and everything was done precisely and carefully. I would highly reccomend these guys if you are moving heavy machinery.

Wrongful sale of my belongings despite payment attempt and communication…read moreThis review is for Public Storage - 8228 Belair Rd, Nottingham, MD 21236. On January 26, 2026, my storage unit was sold even though I made repeated attempts to communicate and make payment. I called multiple times that morning and left messages trying to find out the exact amount required to stop the sale. No one returned my calls. When I finally reached an employee named Chrissy, I was told my total balance was $1,000.48 and that they would accept a partial payment of $555.00 to stop the sale. I had the $555.00 available and agreed immediately. While attempting to process the payment, my bank showed a system error, which was later confirmed by my bank as an issue on their end -- not a lack of funds. We attempted the payment multiple times. I also tried using another bank card and successfully sent $1.00 to confirm that card worked, with the intention of immediately submitting the full $555.00 payment on that card. Despite these efforts, my belongings were still sold. On January 27th, I called again and begged them not to release my belongings to the buyer. My bank confirmed that the funds would be fully available on January 28th, less than 24 hours later. I explained this clearly and pleaded with them to wait. My unit contained irreplaceable personal items belonging to my deceased parents, which are the only things I have left of them. I would not refuse to pay knowing that. I was later told Public Storage gave me "two extra days," which is not true. My account had already been closed on the 27th, and my belongings had already been released to the buyer. The timeline does not support their statement. I did communicate. I did attempt to pay. I did everything I could under the circumstances. The lack of compassion, accountability, and honesty shown in this situation has been devastating. I needed to relocate to Baltimore and was referred to Orly moving…read more Let me start by saying that Liz who was my contact was EXCEPTIONAL in the process of preparing for this move. The cost was comparable to the 2 other quotes I had received. On the day of the move, I ended up in the hospital, and with a few friends to direct the process in my absence, it really went off without a hitch!!!!!!! When it came time to deliver everything, they were efficient and careful with most things and nothing was broken in the process. there were 3 issues... 1) they could not get a couch out of the old apartment (Even though it was brought in) and they left it and I had to pay to dispose of it. 2 )When they unloaded everything unbeknownst to me a number of items were placed in the garage. (I am in a wheelchair and couldn't watch everything. I had to pay someone else to bring them in to the condo. 3 ) I spent $250 for $25,000 in additional insurance and after unpacking I realized the tub with an essential computer for my business was missing. The computer while valued at $800 was secondary to the files and records on it that were not all able to be backed up. When I tried to find out what happened they said they talked with the lead mover and they didnt know what happened to it. And because I was still sick from being in the hospital and couldn't unpack everything quickly, they said because it was 14 days later that I could not make a claim. While the move was accomplished and with relatively little trauma, I can not recommend Orly moving.

The entire process from getting an accurate quote, to the team showing up on time, taking care of the items (they did the packing up of my mom's stuff as it was too difficult for me), to moving items to their eventual place, was easy. I used a different mover (found on CraigsList) when I moved out of my home into my apartment and I ended up doing at least 1/2 of the work. For my mom's move I sent Liz pictures of what was in her room, the team showed up on time after calling me when they were a few minutes out, were kind, packed things with care, and made sure I understood the process. Frankly the bar is so low for this type of work, that it isn't hard to be disappointed (showing up on time? Charging what the quote reflected?). The local team is great. Payment was easy. They work their butts off. When I eventually move again, I will only use Orly.
