Chaves Heating & Air Conditioning - They moved my dehumidifier to a more convenient spot and made sure it was running perfect before they left.

This is not a group you want to hire. A good friend hired them when her heater went out on a…read morefrigid winter day. They sent someone out, charging her about $500. Whatever he did stopped working a day later, so they sent someone else out to fix what the first guy didn't do properly. And they charged my friend for the second visits. How's that for customer service? The second "fix" stopped working in a couple of days, so they sent someone on a third visit, and charged my friend for that visit, too. This outfit has customer service down to a science. Oh--and along the way, they told my friend she needed a new heater, but the fixes they were doing would get her through the winter. Price of installing a new Bosch heater? Over $10,000. When my friend told Chaves she wanted a second opinion, they told her she didn't need one. (More "customer service.") Within a few days, my friend contacted someone whose firm offered her the same Bosch heater, installed, for under $5,000. My suggestion: Don't put yourself through what my friend just went through. Stay away from these guys. They act like they know what they're doing, but too much of what they're doing is over-charging for work they don't do very well.

My house was built in 1959 and my AC system had seen its better days (installed 1988 and dead as a…read moredoornail), so I had to install a new system. I checked with several HVAC companies, and they all told me they couldn't install a central AC system, because there was no room for a condenser to fit on top of my old oil burner. After checking everywhere and not being happy with their alternatives, in frustration I mentioned HVAC to my friend, and she told me to check with Chaves in Hudson, MA. So, I had Chaves come out for an estimate and Jacob was on time and a pleasure to work with. I told him the situation up front and after looking at everything, Jacob told me they could fit a condenser on top of my current oil burner; it may involve some manipulation, but he felt confident they can do it. I was thrilled. They put everything they were going to do in the quote. The quote included things I never thought of like getting a permit and an electrician to make sure everything was up to code; I'm telling you these guys are one in a million. The installers, Mike and his partner were great, on time, spoke perfect English and more than capable to handle anything. I should also mention that Melissa in the office was very clear, helpful and the type of person that will fill a rainy day with sunshine. I love my new system and would gladly recommend Chaves to anyone that needed the best HVAC company around.

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!! They sent over an 18-year-old newly graduated kid to diagnose our…read morecentral air problem. We already knew we needed a transformer and let the kid know. He found some chewed wires and replaced them then told me he would need to order parts and come back the following week to install. One week later the same kid shows up to install the newly ordered blower motor (I thought he was ordering the transformer) and 5 hours later he tells us he needs to get a transformer. Really? He leaves and gets the transformer and within 30 minutes, blows that one up because he wired the blower incorrectly. Heard a loud pop and saw smoke! The kid then comes to me and says, "Someone else is going to have to come out and find a short in your system that I can't find. There was no short prior to him working on it, just needed a simple transformer as everything worked fine when a bypass button was depressed. He then hands me a bill for $550.00!!!!! Says he is not charging me labor for the day. I told him I would not pay until the job was complete and told him to call his boss Nate. Nate's solution.... We would not have to pay but they would take apart my AC and take back their parts!!!! Seriously? It is not our fault the kid didn't have help and was lost doing his job. It's not our fault the wrong parts were ordered. Why should we pay for their mistakes? I then called Nate, completely irate and expressed my anger at his business practices and the fact that an inexperienced apprentice should have been supervised. He kept telling me that he was going to take his parts back if I didn't pay him. My husband then got on the phone screaming at him about how pathetic he is as a businessperson and thought he was ordering the transformer since we showed the kid on day one that is was needed and he agreed. Ok so my husband was a bit of a bully and threatened Nate over the phone to either fix the unit or he was going to break his legs. Mind you, I didn't agree to his verbiage, but he was angry. Who could blame him? Certainly not the cop who showed up the next day to get our side of the story. Yes, that's right folks, Baldinelli Refridgeration screwed up a simple repair and when they couldn't hustle $550 from us for parts that didn't fix the problem, they call the cops on their customers for being angry. Again, I don't agree with how my husband handled things, but it was an angered verbal threat over the phone. With any other company who has been doing professional business much longer than Nate who is too young to know better, it wouldn't have even got to this point as they would have said nothing was due until the job was complete. In the end, the parts, which I strongly suspect no longer work because of the apprentice's wiring, were left and we were told they would not be back. In absolutely no way am I blaming the apprentice! He lacked the proper supervision that an apprenticeship requires.

Over the years we have…read moreused them for drainage issues, plumbing repair and hot water heater maintenance and until recently delivered a reasonable service. On our request, Demelo came to our house on June 7 to clear a clogged kitchen drain. The technician worked on it and declared the problem fixed. We were charged $230. About a week later the drain was clogged again. On June 17 Demelo returned to clear the same clogged drain. A different technician "fixed it" and charged us another $370. In a weak moment I paid. So after paying $600 and one more week, the drain was clogged again for the 3rd time. On June 28, we called Ari's ProDrain Cleaning to clear the same clogged drain that none of the Demelo technicians were able clear. Ari charged us $250 and gave a 30 day warranty. The drain is working well now. I contacted Demelo several times to complain and I requested a $300 refund (should be all $600). After several calls the Demelo business person told me that the owner can only authorize a $60 credit on THE NEXT SERVICE. Demelo does not provide a warranty on their work even though their website states under plumbing services: "Demelo Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning is there to fix those problems, making sure your day-to-day routines, whether at work or home, continue unabated. Need an installation or repair? Call us. We'll have one of our team members out to appraise the situation and get you up and running, leaving you with the confidence of knowing the job was done properly." In other words empty words. The charge time and materials whether they fix the problem or not. Clearly a company to avoid.
