I've been a customer of Jason's for two years. He repaired our tenant's boiler twice during the deep freezes of '22 and '23. It cost us upwards of $6000, which was a lot for us, but I never haggled because we had no choice, and I appreciated his responsiveness at the time. He has a cheeky attitude that can tip over into disrespectful. One example, he got irate at me for not responding to a text when he arrived, after I had specifically asked him to ring the doorbell. This is relevant later. He has a way about him that makes me uneasy, like a guy who jokes around but is about to blow a fuse. On the second repair visit this past February, I asked him to also quote replacing the hot water tank, which still works but is approaching end of life. He texted me a quote in March, and in June I said we'd like to move forward. He said he had to requote, and I had no issue with that. But it's been like pulling teeth ever since. The texts speak for themselves, attached to this review. This is the part that tells me I'm done with him (typos are his): "I'm very busy with a.C issues at the moment and by the way I gave other customers that' have spent 5x more money then you have so I would not pull that card feel free to call a plumber thanks" I don't care how busy or lucrative you are -- you don't communicate with an existing customer this way. And I've been pretty polite and patient this whole time, as you can see in my texts -- and we're talking six months since my first inquiry! Apparently, if you're less than a $30K customer, be prepared for unresponsiveness combined with major attitude. Jason doesn't need your business. Good for him! I am posting this review not to get money back or to complain. I just don't anyone to be caught off guard like I was. I called this company for a diagnostic on my mini split AC that wasn't cold enough. They told me it would cost $140 for the test and $52 per pound of freon. They said they can't give me an exact price until they see the unit and see what "repair" is needed. At the end of the job, I was charged an additional $120 for labor even though there was no repair needed. They said the labor was to pump the freon, It took 10 minutes, but they said they have to charge a 1-hour labor minimum which was $120. I wasn't told about this fee before, so I had to pay whatever they charged at the end. So I basically got charged $172 for 1 pound of freon. I felt this was unfair and not honest business practice. read more

Extremely rude and avoid at all cost. I called Donovan to fix a boiler at a property I owned. He said he would show up on a Monday, so I asked my tenant to wait for him. The day came he didn't show up. The next day, I called, and here is the conversation: "Me: Hi, I'm calling about xAddressx Donovan: I didn't install the builder, I don't owe you anything". Jason is very responsive and straightforward. He always answers my calls immediately and tell me upfront what type of service and charge I should expect. He is busy and might not have immediate availability, but he is willing to work around with my schedule and tries to squeeze me in within a few days. Compared to a lot of contractors I contacted who are so hard to schedule or flaky, Jason is doing a decent job in scheduling and keeping the appointment. On the day of job, Jason came to my apartment and made a diagnosis for my HVAC issue. My HVAC is ancient, complicated and rare. He spent the time discussing with me the possible issues and solutions. In the end, he told me that since he is not specialized in this area, he would recommend me to find a plumber to do this job. He spent 30 min at my place but at the end, he said he wouldn't charge me anything as he couldn't take the repair job. I have interacted with some contractors who came before without proper tools, spent the same amount of time and achieved a wrong diagnosis, but still charged me hundreds of dollars. I have to say that Jason is such an honest and pleasant person to work with. Although my issue was not solved which I know it's not his fault, I truly appreciate his honesty, patience and kindness. I was in a meeting (I work from home) and didn't hear the doorbell or see the text. 8 minutes later (and without receiving a phone call that they were here) I get a really rude text message that I had wasted their time and never call them again. I totally get that ideally I should have heard the doorbell and seen the text, but I think a simple call would have solved this problem and the rude text message follow up was not needed. read more

I can't believe I forgot to review Donovan Mechanical! I cannot say enough good things about Jason. He has been a godsend. I have had the misfortune of dealing with some of the most incompetent, dishonest, unprofessional, unresponsive (insert every negative adjective) companies around this area. Enter Jason, who surprisingly responded to my rambling phone call quickly. I say surprisingly bc I was so frustrated and so frantic at that point, I surely sounded like a complete lunatic. However, being stuck without air conditioning during a heatwave for weeks and sweating indoors at 94 degrees is not my idea of fun. I booked it to my other place in Maine while communicating with Jason via email. Long story long, Jason diagnosed the problem, came up with a quote that was in line with what everyone else in my condo complex had been paying to replace our original 30+ year old units, coordinated with the building superintendent to come by to replace/install and arranged to have a carpenter do some of the work to get to the access panel inside my condo. He handled all of this seamlessly while I was in Maine and communicated with me every step of the way. I returned from Maine on the day work was wrapping up and they did a wonderful job keeping everything clean. As a matter of fact, the first time I saw Jason, he was literally on his hands and knees wiping my floor. Wth!?! He is the ultimate professional and perfectionist. Jason is the real deal people! Needless to say, I have already recommended him and John (the carpenter) to a friend of mine. I have also given their information to another neighbor in the building in case she has any problems in the future. The problem with living in a building like this is that particular companies become de facto companies. I have no idea why we still use our HVAC company. When the fan in our new-to-us central air system stopped running, I turned to Yelp to find someone trustworthy to give it a look. I'm glad I came across Jason because his call was the only call I had to make. Upon picking up right away and hearing the symptoms, Jason suggested I turn off the system immediately to prevent damage, gave a clear overview of his pricing, and amazingly told me he could come by in a few hours. Jason had a diagnosis within just a few minutes as well as a repair shortly after. Fortunately it was just a bad capacitor, and Jason had extras on-hand, rather than the motor which I have learned is now rare and expensive. While onsite, Jason also repaired some leaky ductwork, pointed out that the thermostat was inaccurate, and thoroughly explained what kind of maintenance the system would need over the next season or two. I spent $450 with another local 5-star HVAC company only to be told that they couldn't find the issue and that I needed to tear down interior walls to replace pipework. Heating went out. It's been cold, so I called around first thing in the morning. Jason came up as #1, so I called him and he called back pretty quickly. I really appreciated his willingness to make changes to come out the same day. So by noon, heating is back on. I called Donovan Mechanical when my 41-year-old gas boiler stopped working. Jason got back to me within the hour and was able to fit me in two hours later. My house was 44 degrees so I really appreciated the quick response and that he was able to get to my house that day. When he arrived, I was already prepared to be told that my old boiler needed to be replaced. However, after testing out several connection points to the thermostat and evaluating the boiler, he found that it was a connection point that just needed tightening up, along with a thermocoupler that was old and needed to be replaced. The cost was minimal and Jason also swapped out my old programmable thermostat with the new one I had purchased. Jason is amazing! Great personality--very professional, knowledgeable and efficient. He explained what he recommended before he did it, letting me know what the cost would be, and also gave me alternatives. It was an excellent experience and my house was back up to 68 degrees in no time. I highly recommend Donovan Mechanical and will definitely use them again! read more

Had a definitely overdue check up on central air HVAC system. Jason was polite and did an extremely good job of explaining everything he found and his recommendations for avoiding any problems going forward. There was leak that caused water to pool on the floor of the furnace system, and the outside A/C unit in desperate need of cleaning along with a few caps missing from the outside unit as well. Total cost of the check up, cleaning up the remaining water, and both cleaning the outside unit and replacing the caps that were missing cost $356, 140 of which was the base amount for the check up. Just moved into an older home and we scheduled a general service call. He gave us an excellent price quote and stuck to it. It was ironic in that the same day we were scheduled to maintenance our heat went out (before he arrived) and he kept to the standard charge and did not charge me for emergency service. Jason is a lifesaver. Our A/C stopped cooling our home the evening before a severe heatwave was set to hit Boston. After getting a frantic call from me at 4:50pm the night before, he fit us in before his first call at 8:00am the next day. Jason was at my home at 7:30am, ready to go. We showed him the units and, unfortunately for us, they were frozen over. He couldn't do too much to help except tell us how to thaw it out and what to do to get it running at an acceptable temperature. He came back this AM at the same time, fixed the A/C for the heat wave and rest of the summer and mentioned what it might be for a long term fix as well as what it might cost. Since our home is still under warranty, we are contacting the builder for repairs, however, are hoping they will allow us to employ Jason for that fix as well. Cost was EXTREMELY fair for two stops at our home, plus the short term fix to get us through the heat wave and the rest of the summer. It was really refreshing to be dealing directly with him and you always know who is doing the work for you. Jason came out and identified the issue with our HVAC Hydro Air unit that was not working and came back to repair the unit once he expedited the parts. He also found an issue with our second unit with a clogged drain and saved us from future HVAC failures. He is by far one of the best finds and hires!
