A big upgrade from being a rundown Vons. I will tell of my experience of the new store in a few moments but I am going to address what was there before. The Vons even though I shopped there from time to time needed a remodel big time. It was always a graveyard when I shopped there. Dirty old tiles, outdated fixtures and poor lighting was what I remember. Not that I didn't like shopping a uncrowded store. I just felt sorry for the business itself. Enter Smart & Final Extra, a refreshing updated modern store. It has that club warehouse feel but you don't have to pay for a membership of any kind. The aisles are no frills and you can easily find what you are looking for. You can shop weekly for your grocery and household needs with great satisfaction; but where they really shine though is when you are shopping for a party, BBQ or other special event. From paper plates and plastic cups to alcohol beverages to meats. This store has it all. One time I needed a good sharp knife to cut some carne asada for a tailgate party. I found the perfect knife there. I know dub that knife my 'carne asada knife'. They also have the biggest bags of ice anywhere. A big upgrade was needed for the old Vons. It has been answered by closing and reopening as a Smart & Final Extra. The new store is a welcome addition in our neighborhood. I usually have a lot of respect for older people, but this woman who works here is always very rude to me and my husband. Hello, I was at cashier number six today. I had about 15 items I wait more than 20 to 25 minutes. The lady she was kind of old don't mind but at the same time they were another cashier been already open was cashier # 2 but was kind of far away and was already busy After a little bit cashier # 1 open the one closest to the Liquor area they didn't call nobody . They just start taking whatever customer from that side and then cashier number five open she start taking random customer without telling us to come. Let me help you you know and I had my child with me. He started getting very frustrated because he has issue. I was still standing holding my basket. They were people behind us like she started taking them just randomly when I get closer to my cashier. I ask her where is the manager? This smart and final is located off of Highway 54 in Spring Valley and next to Target. The shopping complex has also gained a Starbucks and Chick-fil-A as well, which makes the parking a bit busy at times. When the store was brand new, it was clean and nice. The store is still clean, but I find that they are low in stock for certain items, not sure if this is an occurrence with all Smart and Final chains but it has been something I've noticed lately. This location is convenient when I am headed to my friends house since it is on the way. The stairs walkway from the street should be avoided, as transients have urinated there or are typically around that area. Otherwise, I can't ever recall having any bad experiences with staff. read more

I stopped in this newly opened Smart & Final Extra after work on my way home to pick up some water, but as usual, I left with more than just the water. The store was very well organized and moderately busy when I arrived. I really liked their black carts, because they were very sturdy and had very good wheels. I was able to pick up a couple Crystal Geysers 35 packs of 16 oz water bottles at $3.50 each. They had some great prices on paper goods, so I picked up some bowls and plates. I also picked up some chicken legs and ground pork at a very reasonable price. This store has a very nice meat department, a great produce department, including an organic section, and a large wine selection. Their prices are very competitive, but as in any store, you need to shop to find those great deals. Also, you do not need a membership, so anyone is welcomed. Spring Valley. We come here once in a while. Today I came in to get lunch for the family. Nice big size Smart & Final. Lots of parking in front. Best to go here in the day time. From my experience, there can some shady looking people hanging out late at night. So be alert. Our cashier Pearla was super kind, nice & friendly. There's construction next door, not sure what the stores will be. But at least there will be more shopping places in Spring Valley. read more

A new Smart & Final opened up in Spring Valley. A warehouse store to buy items in bulk at a cheaper price, without requiring a paid membership. To top it all off, it's a Smart & Final - Extra! What makes it Extra!? Good question. I had no clue, so I'm taking a quote from the Smart & Final website: "Much larger than our traditional warehouse stores, Smart & Final Extra! combines the high quality fresh produce of a farmer's market, the low prices of a discount grocer and the large club size products of a traditional club store." Fancy words for "bigger store and they got more shit." Lol. They definitely have more goods to buy, both in bulk or not. Surprisingly, they also offer more produce. There's also an unimpressive organic selection. For my health-conscious, clean eating friends, don't expect to stop shopping at Sprouts, Jimbos or Whole Paycheck. From a cost savings standpoint, they do have great deals and for the stuff that's not on sale, prices are fairly reasonable. I occasionally like shopping here because I can stick to my shopping list and not break my spending budget, unlike Costco, where I spend 2-3 times more than I planned and buy crap that I don't need. The location is conveniently off SR 125, for those living in southeast San Diego. As of right now, the store is new and clean. We'll see how long that holds up, especially when you compare it the other Smart & Finals located in south county. Sitting next to a KMart, the parking lot they share is a little janky and, sometimes, so are a few of the customers. With that warning, don't be surprised if you get shoved aside for that 69 cent/pound Foster Farms chicken or whatever bulk sale item you're grabbing, especially during the week of their grand opening. Beautiful new store with lots of space and wide aisles. I was immediately impressed by the produce section walking in: everything looks so fresh and abundant. The organic section and bulk foods are even reminiscent of your more high-end health food stores. The prices are fair as well. I noticed the 8-packs of Yoplait were almost $4 cheaper than other grocery stores. The customer service here is outstanding. I'm greeted each time I enter the building and engaged in friendly conversation at the register. During one visit I asked where to find a certain item and was pleasantly surprised when the employee walked me over to the section I needed instead of just telling me an aisle number and going back to stocking the shelves. This location puts the Lemon Grove Smart & Final to shame! Definitely bookmarking. read more

A few weeks ago my husband and I decided to check out this new location. Normally we go to the store in Lemon Grove. The service at that store isn't bad, but it isn't anything to get excited about. This new location of course is larger, which allows for a much larger selection to choose from. It definitely impressed me. But what impressed me the most was the customer service. Every employee that walked by, no matter what they were doing, asked if I needed any help. By the time we went to pay, the lines were LONG. It looked like there were only 2 registers open. I thought, "uh oh." As we got to the front, the cashier was pleasant and apologized for the delay, explaining that they were short staffed. Now she didn't have to say anything, but her just acknowledging the delay was nice. The other thing I liked was another person opened another register and it looked like a customer came from the back of one of the lines to his register. This cashier spoke up and informed this customer that he would have to wait behind the customers who were already ahead of him waiting patiently. Bravo! I always hate when customers cut ahead like that and the cashiers don't say anything. So, because of the GREAT customer service, I have and will continue to frequent this Smart & Final location. This is my favorite Smart and Final by far. Great selections and prices. The only complaint is they never have enough cashiers. I have never been in this store and all the registers are open. As a matter of fact the most cashiers I have seen at one time is 3. Today the line went down and up two different aisles. The checkout wait was over 15 minutes. I saw so many people leave the store when they saw the long line. So much money lost by the store because not enough cashiers being scheduled. read more

The store definitely has great prices and it's clean and organized but my cashier was definitely lacking in the customer service skills. She seemed more irritated with me than interested in being friendly (maybe because I had over 5 items? Not sure). Which is kind of funny because I think she was briefly giving advice to a young man who might have been a newer employee. Anyway, my normal go-to grocery store is Sprouts and their customer service is always above and beyond. People are friendly and willing to help and engage with you. I'm so glad that we finally have a Smart & Final here in Spring Valley! Now all we need is a Walmart, a Home Depot , and some quality family type restaurants. Anyway,I don't miss the Vons that was here before only because you could tell it was on it's way out; because they never remodeled like the other Vons Stores in other areas. I like this Smart & Final because it's brand new. The only thing they need to watch out for is the freshness of their produce section. This is one of the newer stores in town as far as location. I was forced here after the Lemon Grove one was shut down. It is very large, and is very clean. They have a large selection on most things. Their prices seem a bit higher than the one in Lemon Grove. What I don't like is how all of the employee's that are not cashiers are walking around the store "mean mugging" people. Translation: they are making sure to give you an unpleasant face so that you don't stop to ask for help from them. Look, I get that it gets irritating having people asking for help all day long. My question, isn't that your job? I will not point anyone out specifically; but, I will be searching them out when I am in the store to teach them customer service skills. Don't you realize the happier the customer is in your store, the more money we spend? I will come back just to bother them for quick items. I prefer the one in National City, their customer service skills are much better. In my opinion, maybe a customer service class would help. read more

Although this location is closest to my home, I will not be back. On my most recent visit I waited in line for 27 minutes to purchase 1 item. There were 3 cashiers open on a busy Saturday afternoon. This is not the first time I experienced this. I understand the store has decided to create one line that goes down one aisle and wraps into another. However this is not working for customers. I witnessed a dozen customers put items back and leave. Others who wanted ice cream could not purchase it because of the wait. Guess what people in line were bonding over? You guessed it...their dissatisfaction with the line and this particular store's constant lack of adequate staffing (even pre-pandemic). I extend grace to front line workers and want to believe they are doing their best. That said, corporate, operations and management have the ability to implement better systems by now. I tried to pick up a few groceries during my lunch time from work and there were only two people working the cash registers. Each line had 10 people! I had to go back to work without my groceries. I was in line too long! I went back after worker and still two people working the cash registers! I spent 35 minutes in line! That's ridiculous!! Get some more people working those cash registers! I would still rather go to trader joes or sprouts for my every day grocery shopping but, this is the place to go to for bulk buying,for parties, and bigger families. Having a family of 6 that also entertains a lot of guests, I am always looking for an affordable place to get groceries. This was my first visit to S&F "Extra". I didn't know what extra meant, boy was I pleasantly surprised. Typically Smart & Final has bulk items and is a good place to get party trays. "Extra" offers this and fresh foods - organic produce yay!! They also have a great selection of bulk grains, nuts, seeds and snacks with prices a lot better than Sprouts. The layout of the store was easy and everything was clearly labeled. I did notice their prices on the paper goods were a little overpriced. However, the wine selection was large with pretty good prices. read more

Arrghh, we love our neighborhood, love the people that work here, ....BUT! I have pointed out to the store management on more than one occasion non-service dogs that are in the store. Today I saw a full grown huskie riding in the cart and pointed it out to the management. I told him that cart has to be sterilized. They said yes yes yes yes, but did nothing about it. If you shop here, I suggest you wipe your cart down as thoroughly as possible, because it will be full of dogs paw prints full of dog hairs and crap that they've walked on. I realize that stores are afraid f dog owners going postal on them, but I also have a right to sanitary expectations when I go to my grocery store. read more

Getting overcharged for items gets old after awhile, and not by pennies but dollars. The cashier put another customer's item on my bill for $7.53. Accidents happen, nobody's perfect, I get it. But if you don't catch it it's still your loss, not theirs. So here's what S&F should do to make it right: When a customer catches an overcharge, the item is free. That should focus their attention somewhat. The store would still come out ahead because most customers probably don't catch it anyway. read more

We have been living next to this place since about 1982. First it was a Safeway then a vons. we were sad to hear vons was closing since we had shopped here for so long we knew where all the items were located. I was blown away when I stepped in the smart and final. It reminded me of one of those home remodeling shows on TV where you step out and return and your home has been renovated. You can find a lot of different things at this store like matcha ice cream, different chamoys and hot sauces. If you love vons, I feel like this place is way different and a little more pricier. It's a lot more fancier though. Good place to shop when you want packs of items. read more
