Saturday, 1-10-2026: We came here after dining at Piedra Santa in downtown in search of Black Rifle coffee pods since there were none available at Camp Pendleton. This is an enormous commissary. The cleanliness & organization is well maintained throughout. There is always a vast selection of various items that we just knew we would find that particular coffee here. Sadly, we were disappointed. We wonder if it's so popular that the company can't keep up the demand. We did pick up some fruit & vegetables so we didn't waste a trip. The ladies at check out were cheerful, friendly, & chatty. Happy to have this benefit as a military retiree. read more

The Navy base commissary how has it been so long since we have met? It was so refreshing to see a well-lit, well-stocked, and busy place to shop. We had just come from the commissary from Camp Pendleton, and man it was night and day in comparison. San Diego was bright and fresh looking, displays were well organized and plentiful. Love all of the international options as well, foods from all over the world, and the kids had a great time looking at all of the non-American foods. Will be back again soon! read more

Commissary is almost always and fully stocked and clean. If there is an item that the store doesn't carry, a request can be made for the store to order the item. (No promises but nice that it's an option) Regular coupons are accepted and there are military only coupons that some companies hang by their products. Don't forget to use the commissary app for more coupons. Employees are really helpful. Like really helpful. I had an issue that the cashier couldn't figure out, so the person at the service desk assisted me. They didn't know the answer so they called someone else over and that employee and another cashier assisted me. In the end they couldn't figure it out, BUT I appreciate that four different people offered the amount of assistance that they did. read more

The Commissary. Still one of the best benefits for military, veterans and their families. This is the grocery store for the base population+. This particular commissary is one of the largest I've been to and I've been to a bunch. They have it all covered and always well stocked. Not just the regular typical grocery isles but also stations, like bakery, deli, butcher, etc. Yes they serve a very large population here but they are well equipped to handle the demand. It's always clean and well organized. Large parking lot that always seems full. Use the regular check out lanes where you'll get a bagger who takes it all to your car (they work for tips) or use one the self-check out lanes. Oh, what makes it a great benefit? We Drove to 32nd Naval Base yesterday and went to the Commissary to find a cookie that I've been looking for weeks for, it's a Cookie with Matcha, but no luck, instead I found an interesting ROSE in our commissary, and it's near the Fruit and Vegetable area. These Roses comes in different colors, and they are real. I Pick up a red one and it says: *1 Year use *100 % natural *No Light or Water Required. I bought 1, and we will see if it really Lives for 1 year with no Water or Light :) It's been a while that I haven't visited our Navy grocery store, but the place is still always Clean and the Prices are still good, my last visit in this location was 2 years ago. read more

**On Military Installation** Largest CONUS Commissary. Very impressive diversity of fresh produce, meat and seafood. Butcher is available for any specific needs or specialty cuts. Bakery, Deli and Sushi station is also available for the situations when you don't have the luxury of time to cook and need to quick meal but you also need to do some grocery shopping. Service is outstanding; clean, always stocked or being stock, multiple self check out kiosks and serval cashiers are available. Staff are very polite and helpful. Price is tax free and not that big of a difference compared to shipping out in town. Overall; great experience and very impressed of the WIDE selection of food, beverages and household supplies. Other times I came into the store to buy groceries. This time I use the pickup option. Submitted my orders online and have a curbside pickup. It was my first time. I did call earlier to get the details on where to park etc. The staffs in the customer service were wonderful and full of information for anyone who had to call up with questions about their services. So I drives to the picked up point and call them with the give instructions. They came out and said to me I need to pay first. I gone inside and paid. I have told them that this morning I was at the website l. It didn't allow me to put the payment info. They also said that in the morning that they were having some technical issues too. It can explain why I couldn't put my payments in. But they were super friendly about it. Unlike other stores around. It's such a fresh air~~!! read more

Great shopping experience every time. It's packed 24/7 but the lines move fast. Self check out is always packed so if your trying to get in and out go to the regular lines. Parking is crazy but that's everywhere. I've only had 1bad experience here and that was with self check out sometimes the machines don't work, I never used them again after that! The meats are cheap! I mean so cheap it makes you second guess lol ! Me & My husband shop here every month with more than 80 items in our cart out total is never over $190! So that says something. The only thing I don't agree with and I found this out 3 days ago AFTER shopping here since March 2021 is they don't pay baggers. The baggers only pay is tips, I don't feel like that's okay ! Okay, its time for me to finally write a review for the commissary. Typically, I'm not the biggest fan of military commissaries because they don't always have the best deals (even though that's usually the point of shopping at them). This commissary isn't necessarily an exception (in my opinion, of course), but I would say it's a smidge better than average. We shop here often simply because some stuff does really have good prices (meats, usually), and because of its proximity to where we live. However, oftentimes, the produce is very hit or miss (often a miss, specifically in the fruit). On the other hand, this commissary has quite a wide selection of items including 'international' items and things that may not be as easy to find in your 'regular' supermarket. Overall, this commissary is pretty good in terms of selection and price, however, I personally prefer places like Ralph's for produce. read more

We love this place. Especially on a non-payday weekend. If you do happen to go on payday weekend, go as soon as they open cuz that place gets crazy packed!!! The lines are huge and parking is atrocious. Aside from that the food selection is huge and it's normally well stocked. They don't charge you for bags - that's cool. And you don't pay taxes!!! You seriously save $$$. I paid $139 for groceries at Vons, then I went to the commissary with the exact same shopping list and I only paid $69!!!!! Their kid friendly carts do need an upgrade. They're all busted up and uninviting. The repairs I've seen include duct tape on wheels and drooping frame. Probably because the baggers are paid in tips they don't have a cart wrbglwr cuz the carts are always just left outside so it's right for fresh cart, or walk back outside and get a cart from the corrals in the parking lot. One thing I still don't understand is why is the cat litter $9.99 at the commissary, but $12.99 at the NEX? read more

One of the premier commissaries (grocery stores) I believe, in the Greater San Diego area. With 18 rows of items plus many (unlike some stores) manned-up cashier counters, I'll say it's the place to be. Of course on the weekends you can expect hectic parking and controlled chaos inside the store, but it's to be expected. I'm guessing the locals shop the weekdays while out-of-towners or those who live far away hit it on the weekends. Still, worth it if it becomes your one-stop-shop store. read more

I normally go here if i'm in search of cheaper groceries without taxes. Since this is inside the Naval Base, only active duty members and their family members can shop. Parking here is huge but unless you come by on a weekend then parking can be hard to find. I regularly drink "Naked" juice at work and they sell it here in less than $2 tax free which is pretty neat. I went here today to try out some Lean Cuisine and will try a Lean Cuisine Diet for 7 days (yes, i have issues with portion control but i do have a "Man Appetite") So for 3 meals for 7 days only cost me $38 pretty cheap compared to that 5-Day Nutrisystem Starter Pack from Walmart that cost around $45 and if you have a coupon, it will cost $40. This place is clean and always in order, there are staff members who are always willing to help like this self-checkout attendant who keeps on helping me because for some reason the machine is not weighing my scanned items properly. I like the service here and the atmosphere =) Restrooms are clean, they also have sanitary wipes for your push carts =) The only thing i don't like about this grocery is that they don't have some vegetables that i'm looking for like the chayote squash that i have to buy in another grocery store. read more

Some of these reviews got me laughing I have to admit. It's a commissary, yes it gets busy on the weekends and yes shocker but it does get busy around on/after payday. I don't care if you're going to a tiny commissary in some random base in the middle of nowhere, that is how it works folks. Produce is fresh here, they go through enough of it you don't have to worry too much about your lettuce being half wilted or your apples being rotted. That is a big plus to me. The meat has always been fresh, in fact compared to the commissary I went to before here I was very surprised. The majority of your meat is choice (kinda standard for a grocery store), but they do have some prime cuts behind the glass area. Also the poultry is fresh, which I know up on Miramar is an issue. That being said I really don't buy much meat here anymore. The selection in the aisles is good and so far this is the biggest commissary I've been to. (It was overwhelming the first time I came here actually) I don't see issues with items being out of stock and yes the prices are cheaper than most place. I don't buy a lot of packaged food so again to me this isn't a big deal. The dairy/egg/freezer section is another big savings. Egglands best, for example, are $1-2 cheaper per dozen here than other places or organic milk can be $2 cheaper per half gallon. Price wise yes you'll save money BUT depending on how much/what you're buying you might not save that much. While there is no tax at the commissary there is a 5% surcharge and if you choose to use normal lines yes you should tip the baggers. I agree the concept is old timey but if its a service people want then good on them for doing it. The lines for self checkout are always long, if you want to be cheap (like me) and not pay the baggers, just deal with waiting. I WISH they had more self check lines. Overall yeah I recommend shopping here if you're in the area and if you come here during peak hours don't be surprised if it's busy, deal with it. If it's a long drive, save your gas money for somewhere else. The Miramar commissary is also good, although smaller dry goods selection, if you're farther north maybe check that one out. read more

Prices were OK nothing cheaper than any other grocery store out in town surprisingly. I want to love coming to the commissary but not sure where the value is unless I'm missing something. Also patrons are expected to tip the baggers which I have no problem doing but that only adds another expense to those coming here that already have a limited budget. read more

It's like Costco for the military! After shopping at the Navy Exchange, it was time to shop at the commissary for some grocery goods. It's a pretty big place. I saw a fruit and vegetable section, a meat and seafood section, a deli, a bakery and a sushi making area. They also have bath essentials and laundry items for sale. Throughout the store, there are some folks giving out free samples of some of the food items on sale. Prices here can be a hit or miss. Some items are cheaper than your regular grocery store but there are also some items that are just the same price wise as your normal Costco or Albertsons. Just like at the Navy Exchange, you need a military ID in order to purchase anything. They will check before you pay. We paid at the self checkout and it was pretty organized and quick to get through. read more

4.5 stars I love shopping, especially grocery shopping.. My man and I come here one in a while and we like shopping here since there is no tax :) It gets crowded if you come during the wrong hours. So, to avoid the long wait in the check out line, use the self check out. It's a lot faster. Also, if you have a lot of groceries, someone will help you push the kart & unload all the bags into your car. I usually don't need their service but when I do, never forget to tip them. read more

I've been coming here for 25 years so it's about time I wrote something. This is actually my first time at the new building (and I'm pretty sure it's been open for a year or two). Wow, is it huge! I would say that produce in general is not the greatest at the Commissary but that seems like a thing of the past because there was a great selection today. I've been going to commissaries since the early 80's and some back then had isles so small, the traffic could literally only go one way. I'm serious, if you tried to go against the flow of isle traffic, you were going to hear about it! Well, no problem with that hear. The isles are long and wide and filled with everything you could ever want or need. The meats in the deli are the best brands and there have even been times when they didn't carry a specific item/brand and I've mentioned it to their customer service and they will try and get it. Big change for me was the self check-out lines! So happy to finally see that! Overall this is my go-to place to shop. It's not as close as the local Ralphs or Vons, but for the price, you just can't beat it! I went in today just to buy some canned tuna. I saved $11 JUST from buying canned tuna. I know every time I come I'm probably saving at least 30% That's nothing to laugh about especially these days. I am ever so grateful for having this benefit! read more

No tax? Yes please! I'll admit it, part of the reason I like coming here is that it is part of bi-weekly mother-daughter excursion with my awesome momz. No day is complete unless we make a stop here and fill up her cart with groceries while simultaneously clowning random husbands for carrying their wife's purses for them. Seriously? Give the poor guy his b*lls back. And people wonder I get my snark from?? Plus it reminds me of days gone by where my brothers and sister and I would harass my parents to death and convince them that it was absolutely vital that we had to have Count Chocula, Lucky Charms, Steakums, Corn Quitos and Capri Sun in our cart. Absolutely vital. They offer a large selection of fresh produce and meats daily along with what a typical grocery store would carry only at much lower prices and zero tax. Thank you for taking care of our active and retired military. Some items can be a touch pricier but in the end, we end up saving more money here than other stores. AHEM, VONS. Vons can go jump off of a cliff. Parking is plentiful except on the weekends where the lines can go completely around the length of the store. No bueno dude. They go reasonably fast however be prepared to wait if you decide to make this your prime shopping time. We usually go during the weekdays and never have to endure the zoo-like experience. The best part is that no matter how full my kitchen is of food, there will never be a time where my mom will accept that. I think she believes I am a boho hippie, reeking of body odor and patchouli and living off the land or a nearby garbage bin. Which is why I always end up leaving their house with bags of groceries after I'm done being her personal chauffeur for the day. I like this place. Don't forget to tip your baggers!!! read more

I have been meaning to review this gem for years...thanks to a pandemic I now have the time and inclination so here goes: this store earns five stars from me. One star is for being a complete shopping experience, I can get everything I need and most of what I want in one place! If you are stranded at the Navy Lodge, you are within walking distance to this store as well as the food court. Second, is for the full produce section including fresh herbs, cut flowers, and seasonal plants. Third is for their poultry, meat and seafood sections, these are always well stocked with a butcher shop area. Recently, they have been offering more meatless options-if you are into that. Fourth, there is a deli that will slice your meats and cheeses. They have an entire two cheese cases with imported and local specialty choices. The truffle oil infused goat cheese is my favorite! There is also a sushi stand, making fresh selections daily. They even have a small pharmacy area with supplements, over the counter meds, and hygiene items. Lastly, anything you can buy at the NEX is a few bucks cheaper here. This is because the NEX proceeds support MWR and the commissary does not. If you can access base and shop here, you should for sure check it out. Of course, as many reviews have already stated, this place gets super busy on paydays and weekends. I had a horrible as a active duty veteran experience with the bakery tried to get a cake for my daughters birthday 2 days in advance and was told to call back next day. I called back at and no one answers the phone in the bakery. I went into store at 9 the next morning and was told there wouldn't be any cakes until Sunday. I don't normally shop at this commissary but with the Air show going , the Miramar DECA commissary is close . I didn't know where the stuff are but the people there were so helpful . The lady stocking up the salad even volunteered to help instead of just saying I work on this section only . Most of all , the supervisor Brandon at customer service was so helpful and patient with what I was looking for . Best time to go is early in the morning. The stockers are usually the only ones in there. This commissary is the best one here in SD. So many choices and items. My favorite items to buy; meat, dairy, & baked goods. The bakery is amazing. Cupcakes and cakes are delicious. They even sell Julian Pie Company pies! Support your local companies. Use all the coupons you can find, the cashiers always honor them. The commissary also makes sushi rolls on site, & you can find all your ethnic goodies in the pasta aisle. The most busy day to shop is Sunday. & after military payday (1st and 15th).. don't forget to top your bagger, they only work for tips. Pictures shown are the deli selections. Arguably the best Commissary I have been to States side. The quality of the produce/ fish/ meats is something to rave about! They carry a lot of unique and international items I would not have expected to find in the species, candy/ chocolates and baby categories. This was the first place I had cotton candy grapes and I'm always on the lookout during their season! Also, the fruit selection entirely is pretty large and all around yummy (you will always find great mangos, kiwi, strawberry and peaches to name a few!). I love this commissary; if stationed here, as you can find anything and everything you need grocery wise w/ out a void to supplement with outside grocery stores (whether you live on/ off base). read more

It even has some international foods. 2) Cheap prices. 3) Fresh food. 4) It's in a military base, you won't get robbed lol. 5) It's as big as a "Super Target" or a "Walmart Supercenter" 6) Large Deli stock. 7) It's clean. (Enough) 8) The workers are not rude. (They don't look happy to work though.) 9) It has many registers. 10) Good location. Close to the I-5 or the I-15, and the SR-75 (Coronado bridge) Reasons not to shop here: 1) Don't be surprised, if you haven't shopped here ever, then don't expect to have the lines be short. On Payday, or weekends, the lines spread to like 9 feet away from the front. 2) Mad workers. Like I said, the workers aren't rude, they're just not happy to work there. 3) As busy as you might get ran over by a shopping cart: Some man ran my foot over with a shopping cart, while I was trying to walk towards the checkout line. 4) Limited cart wipes. Who cares about this part? Every visit here, it's empty. 5) Stu born self checkout. Every time when I scan a item, and put it in a bag, it just barks at me. Imagine when you scan like 30 items. 6) It's not walk in, walk out. You have to stand in a line for like 9 minutes to get to the front. 7) Narrow isles navigating to the meat section from the entry, will be fun. 8) There is "no tax" but long lines. 9) Busted shopping carts sometimes when I get a shopping cart, the wheel turns like crazy, which means the shopping cart is broken. 10) WAY MORE PEOPLE than North Island. Summary: This commissary is not the best, though I shouldn't have expected a lot from this. This place has great selection for no tax, but the amount of heads inside, makes me turn to Walmart, or Target. And it's way over the limit on how busy it should be. HONOR your prices. Some of us shop on a budget and some of us are able to "splurge". It doesn't matter what is in my wallet. What matters is what is listed on the shelves and what the item rings up as. It is not acceptable to hear "yeah, we told xxx about that and we have to go by what the register says". This is UNACCEPTABLE. It is not my fault that your "tag system" does not match your "sign system". After seeing a cart full of items, you want to debate with me about your mistake. No. Thank. You. Our family was stationed on Camp Pendleton for 11 years (I know, unheard of) while my Dad traveled around the world. Now a Navy dependent this commissary rocks compared to what I remember backbones the day. COVID-19 limited stock like everywhere else but due to shopping restrictions they seem to almost always have the essentials. The commissary is large and bright. Everyone has already mentioned avoid this and the Next door NEX during military paydays. Fruits and vegetables are not competitively priced unless on sale. I am enjoying the "Hero" generic brands. The commissary never had generic brand alternatives and this one supports our troops. I highly recommend their laundry products. The specialty outside areas always have something on sale and the international isle is fun. I buy organic when available, but there's not much of a selection. Hopefully the supply and demand increases. read more

32nd st. Never fails. Has a lot of good deals and coupons hanging everywhere. It's like an Albertson's but much cheaper. I get all my fruits and veggies from here as well as this one spinach dip you can find over by the dairy aisle. (Try it with Stacy's pita chips! You're welcome.) Caution: they did move some stuff around so, if you're used to the old layout, expect different. And just to clear things up, commissary IS tax free but there is a "surcharge" that replaces it. Ridiculous. It's busy at 9:15 in the am, and only 3 cashiers Open. And my chashier, Lynn (according to my receipt), is chatty as heck with the guest in front of me. Her transaction is over! She could talk ALL DAY about the Water Restrictions. MOVE IT! Then she told me (annoyingly) to please be patient 4 times, after I've already said I'd wait. Lady, I didn't even complain outloud. Who bags Watermelon? The baggers here. Geez. Is that really necessary? I asked you to NOT bag the big items, such as my gallon of milk and my jug of juice. Why in the World would you bag an giant Watermelon? I've noticed that some of the prices are getting higher here every month. I think I'll start shopping at Sprouts and Trader Joe's more often. I absolutely LOVE this place! It's huge and they have mostly everything I need. Their selection of items is decent, but like other have commented, their customer service isn't the greatest. I personally think it's cultural thing, but since I can relate to the lack of being friendly (my family isn't big on sharing their emotions), it doesn't bother me much. No tax, competitive prices and lots of quality choices! I've been going to the commissary back when they had it 3 buildings ago... since the early 90's when I was a youngin'. Whenever I get the opportunity to go here I take full advantage of it. The sad part is that only people with military privileges can shop here. They're strict about it so don't go off thinking you can sneak in a purchase. The thing I love is that this place is a lot cheaper than your local ralphs, albertsons, vons and food for less. I usually go on less busy days right when it's about to close. This is place is very clean and you can find what it is you're looking for with ease. If you're not in the military then go with a friend that has access to it. Give them cash so they can purchase things for you. Why not right? This is my go to place for veggies, meats, and a whole lot more. Unfortunately this isn't the closest grocery shop for me so I do take advantage when I visit.
