I have lived in Diamond Bar 37 years so I am very familiar with a lot of the local business. All I need, or ask for, is fair pricing, friendly, but speedy, efficient, customer service, products in line for single customers on fixed incomes, and a good ear when I express a concern, or request. Last year they stopped carrying my favorite Jose Cuervo LIGHT Mix and a big tall manager I complained to was quite immature, and handled our interaction poorly. As to customer service, noone EVER wants to stand in a long line, especially after a hard long day of work when you still have to go home and cook dinner! Diamond Bar is full of seniors with bad feet! Until recently I have not shopped here as the pricing is actually a lot higher than Winco, which is only 3 miles away as a crow flies. The lines were always too long with not one employee ever paying attention to them, and since I need Jose Cuervo light every week I must go to other stores. Winco barely keeps this item in stock so I think Smart & Final removing it was a poor business decision. As to my 5 stars, several things have changed recently. Two employees have been standouts, and I see a big difference in customer service. The lines are definitely shorter, or faster, and NICO and DOMINIC are very friendly, sophisticated, standout employees with killer customer service skills. I don't know if they are managers, but they should be. I had a complaint recently with an issue I encountered and Dominic handled it with sheer brilliance. This guy is not only tall and handsome, but he thinks very quickly on his feet and I do not encounter that often. He wasn't even trying, but he fixed my concern so quickly with maturity and finesse that it made me feel like a special customer. Now, that, paired with charming Nico, and better service, I also recently discovered their absolutely BEST roasted chicken in all of Diamond Bar, at a very low price! I am becoming a fan of Smart & Final! I see them making changes for the better, but they still have work to do. Their overall pricing is NOT in line with their low pricing claims. With their bulk products, maybe they are. But with all groceries, dairy and produce, they need to work to be a low price leader because as of now, they are not, but should, and can be. I do not wish to buy Romaine lettuce for 1.49 when I can get it for .99! Seniors cannot afford to lose even ONE single nickle on a purchase and that is 10 nickles!! PLEASE HELP US! Here is info, and advice, from a 37 year resident: Vons was just horrible. I spent $500 dollars a month there for years but I once requested 4 empty banana boxes (for charity) and THEY SAID NO! I never went back so that cost them over $60,000!! Haggen was horrible, but Sprouts is crazy horrible. Apparently people with money are REALLY BIG SUCKERS! Lol Albertsons is truly horrible, and WalMart is pulling crap they think their customers are too stupid to catch. These are ONLY A FEW: they are selling products they KNOW will break the first time you drop it; they are running out of products ON PURPOSE so you will come back MORE OFTEN; they are totally eliminating lower priced products fixed income people need for higher priced items only wealthy people will buy. e.g. I buy Natures Recipe Lamb dog food and got it there for over 2 years. They have replaced EVERY SINGLE Natures Recipe product they carry with the COSTLY Grain Free only option as it brings in more money! GO SEE!! "Screw the little guys," that's what Wal Mart always says. P.s. Grain free is ACTUALLY BAD for your dog unless it has an allergy!! Wal Mart neighborhood market my ass. I AM SO ASHAMED OF THIS COMPANY & EMPLOYEES. THEY STINK! I asked customer service for a roll of quarters and they said NO!! True stories. Seriously, do not EVER tell a good customer NO! So Smart & Final, you are for now the best we have in Diamond Bar, but if you want to be a crown jewel you have to adjust your overall pricing to match true low cost stores and out of respect for Nico and Dominic I won't name names. And because of our particular need for a low price grocery store, and one that is truly sensitive to fixed income single family households, you might tweak your product lines to eliminate some of your bulk products to bring in more grocery friendly items. Several products I use, other stores can barely keep in stock, like Arizona Green Tea Diet, and Cuervo Light Mix, and you don't carry these. Popular needs will send us away. Lastly, after this review, I hope you will need a bigger chicken roaster! PS Readers unite! YELP is a powerful tool for desperately needed change for the better. I ask that everyone use it regularly. Tell a store what you love about them, and tell them what you need. Tell them what you don't like, and what you want them to consider. Nothing will change if you don't say something, but if enough of us speak out, you WILL see change. Like a community organized union! read more
