Overall I think Small cakes is a great place. They always offer a variety of unique cupcakes. While their cupcakes are very moist and their frosting is great, the flavor of the cupcake seems to all taste similar to me. I would agree with the previous reviewer that the cupcake toppings can be dry I guess from sitting out. Today I purchased the Chicken and Waffles cupcake. The frosting had a wonderful maple flavor but the mini waffle and the Chicken piece was dry. I also purchased the coffee and donuts cupcake but haven't tried that one yet. I believe the price for each cupcake is around 3.75, this may sound expensive for a cupcake but it is a pretty huge cupcake so I think it's fair. The store set up is a very cute, small location. It's always clean from what I can see. There were 2 ladies working when I visited and they both greeted me with a smile and cheerful hello. Today I walked into the cutest cupcake shop close to chapel hill when I was running errands. I was sucked in by the beautiful decor and these insane looking cupcakes! I had no self control & ended up ordering 8 different kinds to "share" with my hubby! The girls were so nice and helpful in explaining each flavor. Of the ones I got, the best we're definitely the carrot cake and the cookies and cream -both were incredibly moist and the cream cheese icing was amazing! I may be the cupcake queen of the Triangle. (And I'm pretty vocal about my favorite place for purchasing my bakery bounty.) But when in Durham, near a well-rated pastry provider, I'm not one to discriminate! So I found myself at Smallcakes last weekend; it's a franchise, and structures the menu around a selection of staple flavors available everyday and weekly featured flavors that rotate out and often feature seasonal varieties. The powdery sweet scent of confectioners sugar hits you at the sidewalk, and warmly envelops the senses once inside. Ahh, the feels! Cupcakes are artfully displayed on risers and tiers at the front, decor is cozy, and there are a few small tables inside. Wish their Facebook updates or online menu descriptions were as thorough as the in-store labels, which helpfully identify the flavor detailed below with descriptions for "cake," "frosting," "filling," and "garnish" -- so you know exactly what you're getting before you bite into it. A filled-cupcake fiend, I was disappointed to see that only a couple of the dozen-or-so flavors on offer had anything built into the center; I don't think any of the staple flavors did. I ended up with one of each featured flavor-of-the-week, which on my visit included: Sweet Potato (sweet potato cake filled with marshmallow fluff); Peanut Butter Brownie (peanut butter cake filled with brownie and topped with brownie); and Chocolate Mocha. First, the size of these cakes is larger than average. I found the cake surprisingly light and springy, particularly in the case of the sweet potato cake, which strongly resembled angel food. Of the three the sweet potato was my favorite; the moist marshmallow center a nice accompaniment to the marshmallow frosting top. It had the flavor of a sweet potato pie with whipped cream, and was not overwhelmed with sugar. The peanut butter brownie cupcake, had a disappointing center, as it was brownie baked into the cake (rather than, say, a brownie batter-flavored ganache or buttercream filling). As such, it was a little dryer than the sweet potato. It also did not have a rich peanutty flavor which I'd expected, given the name. The most disappointing was the final cupcake, the chocolate mocha. Try though I might, I could not discern any hint of coffee or mocha. It tasted like a basic chocolate cupcake with a basic chocolate frosting, topped with chocolate shavings. Boo. The quality of the cake can't be faulted; and the frostings (the downfall of most cupcake competitors) are also very good... not overly stiff and sweet (though it should be noted these frostings, in my opinion, simply can't compare to the phenomenal silky whipped buttercreams at my fave local shop) -- truly, Smallcakes' cupcakes are of a pretty high standard. Withholding a fifth star due to their tendency toward non-filled varieties, a staple menu that sadly doesn't entice me, and the sometimes too subtle or not-true flavors. read more

A cupcake shop opening near my house caused me both joy and trepidation, as a girl's gotta keep her figure. But the cupcakes here are a very worthy indulgence. So far I've tried the tiramisu, the oreo, the birthday cake, the chocolate lavender, and the Hostess cupcake. The only one I didn't care for was the Hostess cupcake, but that was given to me as a gift and wasn't something I'd normally order anyway. The tiramisu was delicious but didn't really taste like tiramisu - it tasted more like a buttery nipple. The chocolate lavender has been my favorite so far. Only the icing was flavored lavender; it was subtle and delicious. I also loved the birthday cake cupcake, which features the best sprinkles I've ever had!! The entire top of the cupcake was covered in super-fun, spherical sprinkles! The cakes are always moist and fresh-tasting, and the icing is buttery - not too sweet. I consider myself a bit of a cupcake snob. I am actually a pretty decent home baker and often get asked by friends/family to bake them cupcakes - so I'm not a novice. I have also been to some of the better known "cupcake" shops in the country (Magnolias, Georgetown Cupcakes, Sprinkles, Crumbs, etc..). There have been a few other cupcake places that have opened up in the Triangle area over the years and I was never impressed by them - finally Smallcakes has arrived! Just went there today for a quick afternoon snack and tried the Vanilla Chocolate and Maple Bacon. It was hard to only pick 2 as they all looked wonderful. Their display reminds me of Georgetown Cupcakes in that they place them on lovely platters and show them off like sparkling jewels. :) I don't think GT cupcakes has the signs that Smallcakes has which are great - they clearly explain what is in the cake in terms of flavors/fillings as well as the frosting flavor explanation which is really helpful when you are looking at a cupcake called "The Elvis" and want to know exactly what you are getting. Both cupcakes were extremely moist which is great (can't stand a dry cupcake!), and the buttercream frosting was perfect - not too sweet and not too much. Some other cupcake places make their icing almost nauseatingly sweet and glop on tons of it - this was perfection! The shop is cute and even though it's a franchise I love that they made it a "Durham" spot with a custom mural with our Durham Bull and even Durham branded t-shirts for sale. They had 2 small tables in front... I hope Woodcroft lets them do some outdoor seating when the weather gets better. Prices are higher than I would like, but on par with your typical specialty cupcake shop. $7.00 for 2 cupcakes is a high price to pay, so that will keep me from being a frequent visitor (even though it's so close to my house). I didn't note if they had any special pricing for larger orders - hopefully they would consider it as I would think these would be great for parties but you don't want to break your entire party budget on cupcakes! This place is definitely the place to go if you want a quality cupcake in the Triangle. So happy they set up shop in my home town of Durham! read more

As any good standing person should, I felt compelled to try Durham's latest entry to the cupcake scene. I'm irrationally skeptical about a cupcake, mostly out of my inability to place it in the hierarchy of personal sweets / rewards like ice cream, pie, or any sugary snack. That being said, Smallcakes has made that decision easy for me. The place rocks. George Costanza once said "if it was socially acceptable, I would drape myself in velvet." I feel a similar way about the frosting of smallcakes' wholesome delights. Cookies and cream is no doubt specially awesome, and the southern turtle will make your head pop out of its shell. We went looking for a cupcake bakery for our upcoming wedding day. We stumbled upon this place by chance and we were truly impressed with the quality and variety that were offered! While they have only a few varieties (about 10 flavors) available at a time, they have a list of 200 available flavors from which to choose! I admit that I am not a cupcake fan... I usually find that most are usually mostly dry cake with too sweet icing.... that being said, I was amazed at the flavor, texture and sweetness of the cupcakes that we tried. We sampled the Beer & Bacon cupcake, Lemon drop, peanut butter cup, vanilla with pink icing and, my favorite..... the fruit tart cupcake, although the beer & bacon was a close second! We ordered 30 cupcakes for our "gender reveal" (not PC, I know) on Saturday and were more than pleased with this bakery. Not only did they work with us to keep the color of filling a secret from the person picking up the order, but they were so kind and courteous as well. The cupcakes were out of this world good! We have a Smallcakes in Atlanta and I enjoy it there. Since we had devoured the treats that brought with me to my friends' place, I figured it would be nice to pick up some more. Smallcakes doesn't offer a huge selection of cupcakes on any given day (many are on rotation), but I was able to find a couple that I was interested in: wedding cake and hot fudge sundae. Hot Fudge Sundae: chocolate cake with our signature buttercream frosting, roasted pecans, hot fudge, and a cherry on top. This cupcake was so very moist. Yummy. The wedding cake really did taste like one. But the flavor primarily came from the icing. My friend and I both commented that these cupcakes had a pretty good cake to icing ratio. This made for a pretty good stop as my friends live walking distance to this location and it is now on their radar for future purchases. Note: they have a rewards card. We had Smallcakes cupcakes for my birthday this year, and have been hooked ever since! The cupcakes are large, tasty, and stay moist for days. I enjoy looking through their seasonal flavors, and the variety Smallcakes has to offer. It'll cost you about $4 per large cupcake with tax, or $36 for a dozen large cupcakes before tax (slight discounts are always a plus!). They have mini cupcakes available as well, I think a dozen of those will cost you about $20. I have to knock off some points because the price is a bit steep for a cupcake. read more

I have often passed this restaurant when I'm in the Woodcroft shopping center, so today I tried to give it a try. Overall the presentation of cupcakes was good and the cupcakes themselves taste well. My wife ordered a half a dozen cupcakes for me for my birthday. The cupcakes arrived in a large box with precut holes for the cakes, complete with space on either side to insert your thumb and finger in order to lift the cakes out cleanly and without mess. Visually, the cupcakes were beautiful. In the majority of my previous experience with cupcakes, this pleasing aspect did not carry over into taste. With Smallcakes, you get both!! They were delicious, each and every one of them! Moist (a quality often missing in cupcakes) and very flavorful. As I am a chocoholic, my wife chose wisely! I enjoyed the pink chocolate, vanilla & chocolate, chocolate cream, peanut butter cup, hot fudge sundae (which looked remarkably like the real thing, right down to the "whipped cream topping", and caramel crunch.
