I developed a sweet tooth early on in my life and today that sweet tooth made it over to Smallcakes in El Segundo. Smallcakes partnered with Bull City Ciderworks to put on a cupcake and cider pairing (four of each). I'd never heard of this tiny shop, located in Woodcroft shopping center. As fate would have it, I happened to be in Woodcroft a couple days before the pairing event, and wandered into the shop. God, the smell get's you immediately, it smells like a sugar-gasm, they have rotating flavors and coffee on hand. It's a cute spot inside with tiny tables and colorful accents. All the cupcakes I've tried were incredible moist with the perfect balance of sweetness, icing was perfection. I have officially tried: Carmel Apple (my favorite!), Maple Bacon (I'm personally not a fan of bacon on my sweets, but if you are, this would be right up your ally, still delicious), Lemon Drop (oh God, lemon cake!) and the Bee's knees (honey pecan cake with honey brown sugar frosting--more mellow in sweetness). First time going to Smallcakes because my friend wanted to treat herself, and I tagged along for fun. I wasn't planning on getting anything but once the door opened, the sweet smells and tempting cupcakes got to me. I ordered two cupcakes, the peanut butter for my partner and lemon drop cupcake for me! I eat my cupcakes sandwich style when there's a substantial amount of icing, so I cut my cake in half and top the cupcake with the bottom half of the cake. I then cut that in half to save the other half for later, and the cake was so nice and light with some lemon in the middle of the cake and a drop of lemon on the icing. SO GOOD! I called in an order on August 24, 2020, with pickup scheduled for August 29, 2020, at 5 p.m., for a dozen cupcakes. The woman on the phone was very pleasant, and explained what would be available for pickup that day. I placed my order, confirmed pickup at 5 p.m. on the 29th, and received e-mail confirmation for the order. I arrived at 4:55 p.m. for my order, and was advised the order wasn't there. I advised that I had confirmation for this order, to which the woman replied the order wasn't there. She barely made any effort to fully check. I let the customer who walked in after me order so I could find the e-mail confirmation. Once the employee finished the order, I showed her the e-mail I received. Because two of the cupcakes were not ready for pickup, she went to the back room and sloppily made up two of the Hot Fudge Sundae cupcakes. I only saw this after I brought the cupcakes home. Throughout this whole exchange, not once did the employee apologize for the error. Granted, I could have handled the exchange better, but one of the tenets of customer service is apologizing if you make an error. It is unfortunate I have to reconsider ordering from Smallcakes going forward, because the cupcakes have outstanding presentation and flavor, and the owner is genuinely kind. read more
