The cake was gorgeous and everyone commented on how moist and delicious it was. However, the strawberry buttercream was a little to subtle for my liking. The 8 inch cake served about 18 people. I am not the best cake cutter, so it may have served less or more depending on how thick the slices were cut. The inspiration picture I provided was followed to a T. My daughter and I needed a sugar fix, so we popped into Smallcakes late on a Saturday afternoon hoping they would have a couple of gluten-free cupcakes left. Up until moment a go, I firmly believe that you were either a cake person or a frosting person and there was no in between. My cupcake, nay, small cake from Small Cakes totally chnaged my opinion. There are cake people, there are frosting people and there are people who are on the quest to find the perfect ratio. I suppose I've always fell into the third category, but I never thought it was an attainable dream so I ditched the third option until today. Small Cakes proved me wrong. There is such thing as a perfect cake to frosting ratio and they're killing it. I really love the fact that there are three rotating weekly flavors rather than just one. In addition to the rotating flavors, you still have a few basics to pick from. It's hard to even call the regularly featured flavors basic because their chocolate cake has hot pink frosting on it. We visited this shop a little after 1pm today, intending to order a dozen cupcakes. There was one customer ahead of us, picking up a cake order. The employee brought the cake out, packaged it up, took their payment. No problem, that customer left and the employee disappeared to the back of the store. No acknowledgement of us standing there waiting. About 2-3 minutes later the same employee came back out, typed something into the touchscreen point-of-sale, and then disappeared into the back of the store AGAIN without ever acknowledging us. We waited another 2-3 minutes, during which time we heard at least 3 different voices in the back of the store chatting and laughing. These are the best cupcakes I have had since I experienced Georgetown cupcakes. I've tried cupcakes in New York, San Francisco and Miami and Smallcakes Cupcakes rise above them all. Their cupcakes are always moist, springy and light. But what really makes the cupcake is the frosting and the creativity behind the flavors. The frosting here is great - its not dense or overly runny. It has just the right amount of stiffness with great flavor. You can go in any day and get some of the classic flavors like Birthday Cake or Choco-holic. But the real treat is to try the specialty flavors which change from week to week. I was won over by the Strawberry Moscato and Captain Crunch. The following week I had the Hot Fudge Sundae and now I am swooning over the Biscoff Cookie Cheesecake. I asked for 2 smash cakes for my twins one-year-old's birthday, with blood red cake and all frosting on the inside and the outside blood red in color. I was not told that that would be a problem. I asked for it to be one layer. I asked for their names to be in ALL CAPS on the side of the cake, not on top. I was very specific about that. I received a 3/4 layer cake with pink frosting on the inside and "Happy Birthday XXX" on the top in lettering that wasn't even pretty. I was charged over $53. Extra bonus: super cute cardboard boxes to take with you to (1) protect your purchase on rainy days and (2) with cutouts to keep your cupcakes perfect propped up inside - no toppled over, half smashed cupcakes here, folks. I'll tell ya, these cupcakes weren't bad. The lemon drop base was more of a plain vanilla and most of the lemon flavor came from the frosting and lemony jelly inside. It was pretty sweet, as all american buttercream based cupcakes tend to be, but the lemony flavor was light and not overpowering. The red velvet had a thick cream cheese frosting on top and light cocoa cake base. Red velvet cupcakes at Sprinkles are still better, but these weren't half bad. Both of the cupcakes I tried were very moist, even the day after purchasing. The oreo cupcake I wasn't able to taste. My boyfriend pretty much inhaled it as soon as he opened the box. Their cakes are so super moist throughout!! I love their lemon drop cake. There's a bit of lemon filling in the noodle that I don't care for, but the lemon taste in the cake is awesome- it's just a hint of lemon and doesn't have that overwhelming artificial sour lemon taste that most lemon cakes tend to have! He was so cute & ready to show he was excited that you were there. You can tell this is a family business, which I adore. I got 6 different kinds. So far, they are all amazing. The Wedding Cake is still by far my favorite. The cake was perfect & the icing was even better. Fell in love with it so every time they have that special, I will be there. The Salted Caramel was good, but I wanted more of a Caramel flavor for the icing. It was thick like a caramel should be, which was awesome, but I felt it kinda fell flat for the flavor. But this could be just me wanting a stronger caramel flavor 'cause I do love caramel. The Mint Chocolate Chip was awesome. It hit the spot dead on. No complaints on that! My boyfriend enjoyed the Birthday Cake & the Cookies & Cream. He stated both hit were perfect & yummy. He had no complaints. The Peanut Butter one was good. Again, I expected a stronger peanut butter taste in the icing, but all in all, it was delicious. All in all, I would continue to give them my service b/c they were good. Not a bad cupcake. I happened across this place driving home, and boy I boy am I in trouble. It's less than a 10 minute drive from my apartment (7 minutes, specifically), and I wish temptation wasn't so close to me! I decided to try just a plain classic vanilla cupcake with pink frosting and pink sugar dusted on top. The buttercream frosting was just right. Not too thick, not too sweet. And the cake! Having a supremely lackluster "cupcake wars cupcake" before from "twisted sister" back home in virginia beach i kind of wrote off cupcake places as a fad.. BUT Wife and I stopped by here on a sunday afternoon because she was craving cupcakes and to my surprise these were actually pretty good. I got the chocolate cupcake that looks like a hostess cake, as did my wife. Cake was soft and icing had flavor rather than just tasting like sugar, which was awesome. I wished theyd been less inventive with the flavors as i found ingredients in most of the choices that i didnt like, but thats just my 5 year old tastebuds and not why i only gave three stars. I gave three stars because the woman behind the counter gave off a very rushy and/or annoyed vibe, our indecisiveness couldve played a part in that but i cant imagine us acting any differently than anyone staring at a case full of treats deciding what to get. When we excitedly went to the Cary location near home, it wasn't half as good. Last night, my husband went to the Durham location, which is where his colleagues had initially ordered. Caden charged my daughter $50 for 12 cupcakes when the sign clearly stated a dozen for $36. Was very unhelpful in resolving the issue. The owner Eve Craig did nothing to resolve. Very disappointed.
