After weeks of enduring an ever-growing craving for red velvet, I stumbled upon Smallcakes while casually grabbing coffee nearby. Upon entering the shop you are quick transported to a whimsical dreamland full of sprinkles and tiny pleasures. The lady at the counter was warm and welcoming, patient as I made up my mind. As I ogled the beautiful case full of perfectly iced creations, the choice was clear. Red Velvet. I was given my chosen cake in a cute box, a great touch I believe! The cupcake was moist, appropriately textured, but not too moist, for it would fall completely apart. When you break open the cupcake it remains intact, and doesn't crumble or lose integrity, this is key. Frosting was perfectly sweet and balanced, with the deep notes of the cream cheese. If you seek a perfect cupcake, come here and try a few flavors. You will not be disappointed!!

I have yet to have a cupcake that I didn't like from Smallcakes. On this trip we had carrot cake, smores, chocolate cream, and toasted cheesecake cupcakes. Service was quick and she was happy to answer any questions. My favorite this day was the cheesecake cupcake. The frosting was a great texture, cake was moist, and the pieces of cheesecake were a nice addition. The chocolate cream was perfectly sweet. I'd head back for those 2 for sure.

We were in the area and notice the small cupcake shop - decided to stop and see what treats were available. FYI: The store only holds three customers at a time due to COVID19 as well they require a mask as well. The store smells so amazing and so cute! Very simple set up and straight to the point - cupcakes and such. We decided on a Millionaire Cupcake - a play on a Millionaire Pie. Total: $4.07 Overall, it was a good cupcake. Moist and with good flavor. Not really a $5 cupcake, but I understand the cost. It was good, not $5 great. Would I be willing to give it another try? No, I would say I wouldn't. Staff was very friendly and accommodating to my many questions about the different flavors and so on.

If you're near the Woodcroft/Southpoint area of Durham and looking for a tasty dessert option, look no further than Smallcakes! I absolutely love the variety of cupcakes they offer - from signature flavors such as lemon drop, vanilla with pink buttercream frosting, and cookies and cream, to more unique rotating flavors like blood orange or peanut butter cup. In my experience, many cupcakes are sadly unremarkable - a bit dry and boring. But at Smallcakes, the cake is always moist and far from bland. My latest purchase was the blood orange cupcake which has a citrus cake with just the right amount of tart zing without being overpowering; coupled with cream cheese icing, it is divine. The lemon drop, which is a favorite of mine, has a tangy yummy lemon filling and is topped with lemon buttercream. My husband typically opts for something chocolate, and those have also been stellar choices. At a little less than $4 per cupcake, the prices seem reasonable for the quality and size (these are not small!). I believe that there is a discount per cupcake if you buy a larger quantity. Right now, this Smallcakes location is taking every precaution to keep guests safe by limiting the number of parties in the shop and offering hand sanitizer at the door.

Smallcakes in located or shall I say, "hidden" within a busy shopping center. Please drive carefully because stop signs are everywhere! Also, people tend to drive like maniacs right in the middle of the intersection where the shop is located. You'll see what I mean. Onto Smallcakes! The person working at the front was super kind and sweet. It was difficult to tell where the menu was at first but it'll be right in front of you on the glass. There are a variety of cupcakes to choose from along with two specials of the week. I went with... Lemon Drop: A nice kick of lemon, I wish it had more of a lemon flavor, a bit light in my opinion. Chocolaty-Chocolate: A very rich chocolate flavor to it. Also, super sweet! Overall, great experience! The price was around $8-9 for two, which was a hit in my opinion.

I love Smallcakes. Even though they are a chain, I enjoy the weekly features. With over 200 flavors I always find something new to try. The Durham location had Mudslide, a devils food cake with coffee cream cheese filling, chocolate frosting, and topped with a few chocolate chips. I had to try it! When we arrived Emylia greeted us and was very friendly. But then she broke my heart and said they were all out of the Mudslide cupcakes. After finding out that I was visiting the area and drove over to get this one cupcake... she made me one. Thank you Emylia! It was so good. I'm a chocoholic and am always looking for a new way to enjoy it. It was moist, decadent, and worth my begging and sob story. The shop is super cute with a chandelier and happy bright decor. They have plenty of options and they all looked yummy. Emylia told us their sister store is right around the corner from Charlotte in Huntersville, NC. Smallcakes didn't disappoint in this flavor. The only thing that could have made it better would be an adult version. Stop in if you are looking for a sugar fix, need dessert options to celebrate your special occasion, or want to surprise your coworkers, friends or family with a sweet treat. They are sure to have something to please everyone. I love Smallcakes. Even though they are a chain, I enjoy the weekly features. With over 200 flavors I always find something new to try. I really love this location! The staff is friendly and the cupcakes are phenomenal. They're always so moist, fluffy, and soft. And they aren't too sweet which I greatly appreciate. Some cupcakes taste more like sugar than any other flavor, but not here! And the icing to cake ratio is spot on. Cupcakes are $3.75 each, worth it for the occasional treat. I usually try to order the specials because they're not regular menu items and it's fun to try something new. The Oreo is hands down my husbands favorite, though, so you can't go wrong with specials or OG's.

We are all entitled to our own opinions, right? Well here's mine: Parking: 5 Location: 4 Decor/ambiance: 5 Customer Service: 5 Yummmmmy yummmm cupcakes! Love SmallCakes as a chain but i really like this location. Its the same great cakes but something is a little special here. They have the sweetest little lady working inside that works the shop. I've been twice now and have yet to grab her name. She always makes the visit pleasant and she goes above and beyond to make sure all customers are welcomed! In regards to the cupcakes, they are great! Nice sized cakes for the price and they always have super awesome flavors to pick from.

Okay so the cupcakes are DELICIOUS. I stumbled upon this in yelp and literally drove there immediately. There's not too much frosting which is perfect. The cake itself was moist and yummy. So dang good. Not too dry or bland. I loved it. There's a good selection of flavors but personally I'm a chocolate girl so I got the chocolate cream and was happy i did. But they offer gluten free options some days and had plenty to choose from overall. Sometimes at places like this there's only a handful of flavors to choose from and I'm pretty sure there were at least 10! Parking is convenient and easy to get to the shop. Definitely check this place out. It's a cute little shop and soo worth it

Sometimes you just need a cup cake to brighten your day. It's the little things right? This business is still open for take out and for delivery. I went for take out. They had all of their cupcakes in the back in order to take measures during the current pandemic. I tried the special key lime cupcake of the week and it was so delicious. They have monthly specials with a different special each week. The cupcake was very moist and the flavor was great. The icing was creamy and smooth, my favorite thing about these cupcakes are the cake itself. So good. They come with a good amount of icing. At the price of this cupcake it's great to know that you get a good quality and a nice size cupcake. I will definitely order again, this might become my weekly special treat! All in all this is a must try cupcake shop.

This one is mine and it is so good and rich.

It's my birthday weekend and I wanted to get it started right. Enter smallcakes. It took my son forever to choose his cupcake, but the clerk was patient. He loves birthday cake and Oreo. But Oreo won out. The store smells amazing so you walk in the door and start salivating. I could have gotten a dozen, but then I would have eaten a dozen.

I was celebrating a friend's birthday and decided to try this place for cupcakes. Overall, the cupcakes were good. Just a bit crumbly. I chose to eat it on a plate with a fork because the cupcake fell apart as I was eating it. But the frosting/icing for them was very delicious.

When I was a kid, my greatest sugar weakness was a doughnut [specifically the hot & fresh variety from Krispy Kreme]. They say your tastebuds change overtime, and I think mine changed last night, when I tried Smallcakes cupcakes for the first time. Oh...my...goodness. I never want another cupcake! I think you never really know how much you can love a sweet until you have the ultimate sweet. If someone offers me a cupcake I usually pass honestly, because in my experience, it's hard to get cupcakes right. BUT, I will NEVER pass up on a Smallcakes cupcake (and you shouldn't either!) Smallcakes partnered with Bull City Ciderworks to put on a cupcake and cider pairing (four of each). I'd never heard of this tiny shop, located in Woodcroft shopping center. As fate would have it, I happened to be in Woodcroft a couple days before the pairing event, and wandered into the shop. God, the smell get's you immediately, it smells like a sugar-gasm, they have rotating flavors and coffee on hand. It's a cute spot inside with tiny tables and colorful accents. All the cupcakes I've tried were incredible moist with the perfect balance of sweetness, icing was perfection. I have officially tried: Carmel Apple (my favorite!), Maple Bacon (I'm personally not a fan of bacon on my sweets, but if you are, this would be right up your ally, still delicious), Lemon Drop (oh God, lemon cake!) and the Bee's knees (honey pecan cake with honey brown sugar frosting--more mellow in sweetness). I recommend Smallcakes for: a treat-yourself-day, any special occasion (anniversary, Valentines, birthdays or even weddings!), girl dates or mommy-baby dates (mostly just for the mommy though!). I can assure you I will be dropping "hints" to Steve A. from here on out!

They make cookies, pastries, breads (pan loaf and hand-formed ones), soups, hand pies, and sandwiches. The variety is amazing. During the holiday season, they offer larger pies and have various seasonal goods to offer. But what's also wonderful is this bakery gives back to the community in many ways. During the height of the pandemic, they offered free bagged lunch to anyone who needed one. They also were (are?) part of the pilot project for Durham's guaranteed income. It looks to me that the owners/company are concerned about being good citizens of the community and that's a great thing. These days, so many companies get bought out by private equity companies. I hope this bakery continues to be locally owned and operated! (Also, generally this bakery isn't offering the very fancy European/European-ish style pastries which is fine by me. The prices are very reasonable, possibly in part because they aren't trying to make their baked goods a "high end" item. There are other good local bakeries that offer "high end" pastries, but they are also much less affordable and for my taste, too rich.)

We got a pack of 8 chocolates (admittedly they did cost a pretty penny haha), which ranked from my most to least favorite are: 1. Horchata: So good, the horchata essence hit me as soon as I took a bite. Very cinnamony, very milky & creamy. 2. Passionfruit: I'm a sucker for anything passionfruit. The curd-like filling did not taste artificial at all. 3. Almond cardamom: Topped with a real almond, but more cardamom forward, reminded me of chai. 4. Hazelnut sassy monkey: Distinguished more coffee than banana, but it was there. Also liked the layer of crunch. 5. Raspberry lychee: The raspberry jam was strong and tasty, the floral essence from lychee was subtle. 6. Sesame matcha: Surprisingly citrusy? I did taste some bitterness from the matcha and appreciated the earthy sesame crust. 7. Ube: Sadly did not detect much ube flavor. 8. Earl grey lavender: Definitely the prettiest, but tasted like what I imagine soap would taste like. In terms of whether the chocolate is worth the price: I've never had this experience of trying such diverse and interesting chocolate flavors before so it was for me. Ambiance is nice, I think there was only outside seating. There's good parking nearby in the Brightleaf lots or on W Pettigrew St. Service was fast and friendly. 8/10 would recommend!

The location is in a strip-mall that's set back a ways from 55, so it's not really visible from the street at all. However, it's weirder than that-- you have to drive AROUND the strip mall to the back, past the various loading docks for other stores, and they you see this place is open just from the BACK of the strip mall. I heard the owner is Algerian, but there are many Palestinian references and flags around the shop, so if that's triggering, then know this in advance before coming in. Still, the place is brightly lit and airy, with tables to eat. They do custom cakes, cupcakes, and other desserts, but we just wanted to sample some sweets. Hours are funny-- just midday Friday through Sunday. We ordered a pecan brownie and a pistachio chocolate dish with kunafa (shredded Middle Eastern pastry), as well as a mocha coffee. The mocha coffee was rich and delicious, as expected. The pistachio chocolate dish with kunafa was to-die-for... SO delicious. Super thick and messy, as you'd hope it would be. And of course the pecan brownie was amazing. I will say the pastries are not "cheap". I got a single tahini chocolate chip cookie to go for a friend, and that was $4.50 for a modest sized cookie.
