I ordered my boyfriend a cake for his birthday and he recommended this bakery considering I don't know good bakeries in NC. I called about 2 or so weeks in advance to order the cake said what I wanted I even asked if they did designs and the young lady on the phone said no, even though the website state you can place a custom cake order. I order Red Velvet cake with cream cheese frosting. I didn't want their standard 10" cake so I went with a 8" cake instead. The lady over the phone said I needed to pay for the entire cake upfront with bakeries I've ever ordered from only required a deposit or 50% of the cake price. I paid and was told I just needed to pick up the cake before they close the day the cake is ready. Cool beans! Fast forward I pick up the cake issue number 1 the writing on the cake is so sloppy it looked like a 5 year old could do better. It didn't fully say what I wanted it to say and when I asked if the writing could be redone the lady said there is no baker available. Okay? I picked my cake up at 3:30pm and there is no baker? I take my cake and leave it's nothing I can do about the cake situation at this point and leave. Once again I didn't pick this bakery my BF he said he knows the owner and explained the story about the owner turning a bad life situation into a good one. I believe the owners story is on the website as well. My boyfriend takes the cake out the fridge about an hour or so before cutting into it. I didn't want to complain about the cake but I'm sure my facial expressions said it all. He cuts the cake and and I eat it the middle of the cake is extremely moist and delicious but the closer you each to the edge of the cake it was overcooked dry asf... and burnt. The frosting within an inch of the frosting of the cake was dry and hard. Either the cake was still hot when the frosting was added or they left the cake out and the frosting got dry and hard. The cake was off putting and out right not good with all the textures of the cake going on. The frosting wasn't too sweet but the texture was just wrong. I called the very next day and was told to all the following day apparently, the didn't a a manager or supervisor that day once again I thought that was odd. I call again and finally have some luck. I speak with the owner who is friendly. He offers to remake the cake but it was for a birthday and we were kind of over it. He then ask what can he do? I asked him what can he do? Then I just say to be fair they used the ingredients to make the cake I would just like half my money back I paid for the cake. He agreed and he hoped the I would give them another try, why n I am not opposed to. The shop itself is super clean it's beautiful inside there is if I recalled a couple of tables and chairs to eat your desserts. The painting on the wall is cute. The is very spacious as well. I'm hoping the person who made my cake a bad baking day and I hope the cakes are not as bad I the one I received. I wish I had pics, but the red velvet cake is my absolute favorite. I tried this bakery a few years back and was unimpressed. A friend had a party recently and I could not get enough of the red velvet cake which was from here. I also tried Favor's cakes at Soul Forking Good a few weeks after and immediately recognized the taste prompting a recent visit to the Favor storefront for more. This time, I tried the strawberry crunch, which was decadent and moist, but I taste the butter which throws it off for me a bit, and my all time favorite....red velvet. Omgosh these cupcakes were amazing! I am usually a person who loves icing and then thinks the cake is just meh...but I loved every part of these. I bought 6 of them for my husband birthday - so it was fun to try a variety. I don't even know if I could pick a favorite because they were all so good. I expected to walk in and just see a bakery counter but they do also have some seating inside. I'd like to be able to give Favor Desserts a positive review for the custom carrot cake I ordered for a special birthday in July. Unfortunately, the cake was never delivered. That was the first problem. The bigger problem has been ongoing since July 15th which is when I called to ask for a refund ($123) for the cake that was not delivered. I spoke with the bakery manager towards the end of July and she assured me that my refund would be issued that day. It is now August 7 and I have still not gotten a refund. I have left messages for the manager several times with no response. I am really fed up now and have taken the complaint up with my credit card company to try to get my money back. Generally, I'm a really big supporter of small local businesses so I am sorry that I feel compelled to write this complaint. But this behavior is unacceptable. We really like the owner's story: from convict to baker to successful business owner. He recently purchased a building on S. Alston Avenue in Durham (the old Halgo deli) and relocated there. We stopped by and got some cupcakes to go after visiting the library across the street. We got strawberry, vanilla, carrot cake chocolate cupcakes. To be honest, the cupcakes and icing are a little too sweet for our tastes, but I know they have fans. At the counter, there was no sign indicating what the cupcakes and cake slices were, so the staff person had to list them for us. Extremely underwhelming. My mom order one dozen carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, one dozen yellow cake with buttercream frosting, and one dozen assorted (cakes and frostings should have been assorted). We review one dozen of just chocolate cake with white frosting as our "assortment." Additionally, the cake and frosting sizes are all different. I really wanted to give them more than 3 stars. I came here after seeing such good ratings. Maybe I came on an off day. We came on a Saturday a little before 2pm. The lady working seemed really irritated with us for coming in. When we asked questions, she gave us the shortest answer possible. It made me feel bad to even ask anything, as if I was a bother. We ended up getting a slice of carrot cake & red velvet cake. They were ok. To pay $12 for 2 slices of cake, I think the packaging could've been better.. I wouldn't buy a slice of cake to take to anyone because of the packing. The cake slices are too big for the small container. I love a big slice of cake but these are squished into the container. The cakes were ok. We tried eating them right away & maybe they weren't too good because they were cold as my friend said they were better when she got home & they were more room temp. I'd cast a lustful eye toward Favor Desserts for over a year, the Bookmark serving as a seductive reminder that I needed to make a visit with these 5-star cupcakes happen. Finally found myself on that side of town, and stopped in to taste the wares. What I Like It's actually a pretty spacious set-up, and has tables making it more of a dessert destination. Cakes are labeled and prominently displayed in the case, and you have your choice of slice or cupcake. I even caught a glimpse of the industrial-sized mixer, being monitored by the owner in back, whipping a deep red velvet batter about. What I'm Lukewarm I tried to be chatty with the cashier, but she was all business. And the cakes, sadly, were a let-down. These are not fanciful, highfalutin cakes with fillings, toppings, or cake pop sticks... they are standard favorites, so I expect them to be true and tasty. I had Red Velvet, German Chocolate Cake, and Carrot Cake. I actually thought the cupcakes were on the dry side, and tasted no better than a box mix. I'd love to see this place succeed and so decided to offer some helpful suggestions. They are at a convenient location - so close to Greenwood Common Shopping Center and RTP folks. With a few tweaks I think they can earn a following and I wish them the best of fortune. We decided against the nice, large cake serving (it looked delicious) and went with the smaller post lunch option of a chocolate cupcake. It was okay but they will have to compete with places with Gigi's Cupcakes. I know they can do it but it will require upping their offering a bit. The signage advertises the establishment also as a coffee shop. That puts their competition against specialty coffee shops. Their offering was Keurig Coffee (they asked us to pick the flavor) and then when milk or cream was requested, they brought out a gallon of milk for use. These two points are again easily addressed: we suggest they try to partner with a local coffee group such as Muddy Dog or Counter Culture as a bigger draw to their desserts, and have a more professional delivery of coffee accoutrements. Located conveniently off of NC 55 and its an amazing bakery. The cake is moist and always fresh tasting. My favorite items here are the five flavor pound cake and the chocolate cupcake with butter-cream frosting. I'm not big on pound cake but this cake is awesome and is easily topping the list of the best cake I've ever eaten. I highly recommend checking this place out. The owner and lead baker's story of redemption is amazing and I'm happy to support this business! So much so that I actually purchased a whole cake and took it home for Thanksgiving so my family could try it. Some people would think the prices are expensive but I've learned that $3 a cupcake is just the price of cupcakes at a bakery. The cake slices are $5 but the slices are huge. My wife and I have tried almost every kind by this point and even though they are six bucks per slice, they are totally worth it. I've recently been obsessed with their cupcakes..so this place has grown to be dangerous for my waist line. The carrot cupcake is to die for... best I've had. i also love the double chocolate and red velvet. They have a Humpday special on Wednesdays and all cupcakes are $2 (normally $3). They aren't about overdecorating the cupcakes, but really focus on the flavor and the texture, which are great. Their Italian Creme cake slices are phenomenal too (coconut and walnuts..yum).
