Wow, we're impressed - loving what Maynard has been doing with its downtown with small joints and Smack is a standout star amongst the scene. First of all, the speed of service - we couldn't believe how fast our food came out. The Smack bun had a sweet Asian BBQ sauce over shredded pork between a soft, warm bun. The salad was pretty standard with a perfectly tangy sesame ginger sauce. The calamari wasn't battered with much flavor but the spicy mayo sauce that came with it complemented it well. The tonkatsu ramen tasted just like what we've found in big city ramen shops - savory broth and chewy noodles. And all these came out hot, one after another after another soon minutes after we ordered. With service so fast and flavors so good we devoured everything and were in-and-out in twenty minutes! My particular favorite is the miso ramen. Miso based ramen is a northern Japan specialty and this place does it oh so well. You get tons of noodles, large slices or pork, and great side items like bean sprouts and nori. My husband tends more for the spicy side and goes for the spicy garlic udon noodle stirfry. Wonderful little place in small town Massachusetts outside of Boston. Was taking scenic route back to city and stopped for a late lunch ( note they close for an hour at 3:00). Got the tonkatsu ramen. It's labeled as spicy but if you want more kick you will need to ask for it. They were able to sub rice noodles for me with no issue and were attentive if I had any allergies but I assured them it was just reducing wheat intake. Noodles and bone broth were very flavorful. Finally a ramen joint "near" me. When you enter, you're greeted with a traditional Japanese greeting. Seating occurred with no wait, but they were busy, so we may have just been lucky. The staff was very nice and there was no wait for water or menu or even the taking of our orders. The takoyaki was good, loaded with Benito flakes. For ramen, we got spicy miso and spicy red tonkatsu. They were both excellent. The broth was made of real bone broth and just the right amount of spice. The chasu, woodear, and ramen egg were all very good components. Apparently we went during the soft opening. Spicy miso ramen was my self care lunch of the week. I enjoyed this dish and the warmth and vibrant color it provided on a cold, wet and dreary day. The large amount of scallions in the dish was appreciated, especially as with each spoonful of broth and soup I was able to enjoy something green in the spoon from either the scallions to the nori. The tonkotsu during my first visit was perfect, but I believe they changed it based on feedback that it was too salty from some customers. During my second visit the tonkotsu tasted watery to me. Tonkotsu is supposed to be a rich and creamy broth, so it is possible that some may interpret the richness as excessive saltiness ? I will visit again and update my review. Update: I asked for richer brother and that is what I received! The tonkotsu here is very rich and flavorful. The takoyaki is here is amazing as well. Being from the Allston/Brighton area, we frequent many excellent Asian restaurants and Smack Noodle rivals any of those! We started with the fried gyoza and pork buns..both were excellent, but the pork buns were amazing!! Next time I will order a few of those and have them as an entree. My wife had the stir fried beef with flat rice noodles and I had the spicy tonkatsu ramen bowl. There have been a few previous reviews stating that the ramen bowls were too salty, but this was not the case for mine. We randomly came here for dinner on a Saturday night after asking the employees at the Loyal Companion down the road where they got theirs takeout from! They said Smack Noodle it's amazing and we were sold! Definitely a pretty small dining area, but it seems like takeout is more their business anyway and we were the only two dining in; although there were constantly deliveries going out and people walking in to pick up their order. We were greeted and seated immediately and took a few minutes to look at the menus. They've got both a hot food menu with apps, soups, noodles and curry and then the sushi menu. We both decided we were in a noodle mood and ordered the udon basil noodles with tofu and the udon garlic noodles with chicken. The food came out very quickly and was hot and fresh and delicious. Just writing this I'm already craving another bowl! I was super glad my chatty husband asked about the takeout we could smell and really appreciated the food, service and ambiance at Smack noodle.
