The pub is unassuming on the outside but nice inside. There are two sections those for indoor dining and those wanting to sit outdoors or hang by the bar, we chose the latter. Outside is wonderful with a nice patio, plants, and plenty of shade. With the warm weather, this was a popular spot for folks. Service was friendly but limited. You order and pay for your food and drinks at the bar, they bring it out to you and that's it. I had a Lemon Chicken Pesto Sandwich. It was fine but nothing spectacular. I wish there was more filling to the sandwich, it was very bready. The fries (chips) were crispy and soft. My group enjoyed their meals as well and they looked good. Bath has lots of eateries and shops. If you're going to the Roman Baths or are in the main area, Crystal Palace is a nice spot to stop in for a bite or drink. They're located off Abbey Green near the courtyard.

We were late for our booking and the staff were really nice and said the table's yours for as long as you want it, so don't worry. I had a tough decision to make between the beef and the lamb and the decider was whether they'd let me have a Yorkshire pudding - and they did! It also came with swede mash, red cabbage, green cabbage, carrots, roast potatoes and mint and cranberry jelly. You can pay for cauliflower cheese too so of course I went for that! The gravy is different depending on which meat you have, and that's a big tick for me - in the words of a Bristolian, proper job! The owners were in there getting stuck in with the work and the landlord was a real character. He said "the world needs more chaos" and he stood behind the bar (but the Sunday dining experience was far from chaotic and one of the most relaxed I've endured). We could see there was a projector and screen and I'd like to go back to watch a film out there. I think I suffered from a huge case of someone-bigged-this-up-too-much when visiting for an infamous Sunday roast yesterday. Everything was really lovely but I left feeling a bit disappointed and I can't put my finger on why.

They do my favourite Sunday roast in town (and there are plenty of great ones around) with sweet red cabbage, loads of juicy beef with horseradish and better roast potatoes than my Granny's (sorry Gran). And if you get there early enough they have every single Sunday paper for you to choose from (dam I have given away my secret). So you can sit reading the Sunday papers, drinking bitter (shandy) and eating an amazing roast dinner, followed up by their homemade desserts. I recommend the beef roast, but I've heard good things about the chicken. It is a popular pub for good reason, because that's just what it is, a very decent, honest pub with good food and drink and the best atmosphere around. They haven't had to become a Gastropub just to do great food; they just got a brilliant chef. You will always find a table outside; just make sure you huddle up under the heat lamps in the colder months. The garden is beautifully lit and you can smoke in it. But most people don't realise they have a huge area upstairs, where you can sit, eat, drink, sing & dance, which is usually a little bit warmer, unless this section is being used by local performers who put on shows here, which are open to the public. This is a pub unlike any other and an important part of Bristol's history, I would recommend it to anyone who wants to experience what a real pub should be like.

It's quite a small pub and while it lacks a decent size for big groups it makes up for it with cozy character. On entry there is a pateoed garden complete with pub benches and what looks to be a stone bake pizza oven which I guess would be great for summer. I'd chosen the Volunteer for my team at work's Christmas dinner as it was a convenient short walk from my place of work in Temple Quay (next to Temple Meads) and i'd heard great things about the quality of the food and service. We had a table of 10 which took up a large portion of the pub, the service was very friendly, can't fault the table service provided. The food was excellent. Starters consumed were pigeon, leak and onion soup and crab thermidor. The hit of the starters appeared to the the pigeon. The Christmas dinner on offer was excellent. Not just first class pigs in blankets but devils on horse back as well (prunes wrapped in bacon). My overall review of the roast on offer is that it's a no nonsense well executed roast dinner that definitely should be a consideration for a good roast in central Bristol. I played it safe for the 3rd course and went for the cheese board, which was also great. All your cheese & cracker classics accompanied with a curry style chutney, pickled onions and capers. There is a good selection of drinks on offer as well. The barman was more than happy to give some advise on the extensive range of ales on offer! All in all a great time had at the Volunteer. I'll definitely be heading back for a Sunday roast at some point and maybe see how it fairs up in the summer as well!

Lots of different options on tap and I was especially impressed with their cider selection. They had an apple cider that was still (vs sparkling) and it was the first time I've ever heard of it.
