Stopped in for a tea the other night. There were five options - a green, two oolongs, and two black teas. I ordered the green, and was told they were out. So I ordered an oolong, and a side dish. The cashier rang up my order, then told me they were also out of the oolong (which was $6). She offered to give me the other oolong (which was $9), since it was their mistake. I agreed. Then another barista told her she had to cancel the order and charge me the full $9 for the other oolong. I told her I wasn't interested, and to cancel everything. I left with nothing. They charged me $9 anyway. Called this morning to ask to speak with a manager after discovering the charge on my card. This was a little before 10 am. Likes: My cousin and I really enjoyed our meals at Slipstream! I got the smoked salmon toast with a side of fruit and she got the avocado toast. On a second visit, my cousin got the daily muffin (a blueberry muffin) and said it was one of the best she's ever had! The ambiance at Slipstream is fun and busy on a weekend for brunch! Dislikes: I love the idea of egg/avocado/meat/veggies on toast for breakfast, but I will say the only downside is that it can be a bit overpriced for what you're getting (and you could definitely make it at home). Also, I wanted a glass of water, which you refill yourself, but the water tub wasn't filled for at least 20 minutes even though I had asked them to refill it twice! read more

This place is so cute!! I love that it's half a lunch spot and half a study spot. They have alcoholic drinks as well as regular coffee shop items. I got the vanilla latte and it amazing- one of the best I've had in a while. Their food is like art. If you're looking for a place to sit and do work/go on your computer they have wifi and the back has tables that are good for that. It's just not super quiet so beware. Our first time at Slipstream, we stopped into the Navy Yard location, with an intent of just grabbing a coffee while out on a walk. Since we weren't getting it "to go" we were directed to sit at a table and order from a waiter. Positive aspects: the latte and cortada were tasty Negative aspects: service was horrible, it took several trips up to the counter after we were seated because: 1. The waiter never showed up to take our order (10-15 minutes), so I went up and placed it at the counter. 2. Once the drinks arrived the pastry didn't arrive. After waiting another 10 minutes, and after my latte was gone, I went back up to the counter and asked if we could have our latte. It was eventually brought to us. This was just about the worst service I've seen in a DC establishment, perhaps hire a manager who can stay on top of the customer service aspect. Also one of the employees parked his car out front right in front of the fire hydrant for over an hour. No tickets but that seems wrong. read more

Slipstream is really impressive--it's probably the most impressive, ambitious cafe in the 14th Street area and maybe all of DC. The range that they have created in this shop is downright impressive: 1. choice. You have a choice of everything. Two cold coffees on tap, four espressos, eight single origin coffees, and too many preparation methods to even list here. 2. impeccably prepared food. It looks like the food was layered atop your plate with tweezers. The presentation, the quality, the attention to detail are all unbeatable. It is delicious. 3. attentive service. The staff is well trained, knowledgeable and friendly. 4. range. They go from morning to night, serving mixed drinks at happy hour/night, and a lot of different foods which include artisanal toasts (a fave of mine, hard to find outside of San Francisco--except the toast here at Slipstream isn't overpriced as it is in Silicon Valley). I got a breakfast bowl, nitrogen cold coffee, and latte. The breakfast bowl was awesome and healthy. The poached egg was absolutely perfect. The ingredients were fresh. It was impressive. Still more impressive was the coffee. It was meticulously prepared with excellent latte art to show the quality that is in the cup (because obviously you can't taste latte art, in case you were wondering, it is a symbol of skilled preparation). The nitrogen coffee was like drinking a beer. It was absolutely perfect and luxurious, smooth, and rich. Without any milk at all, the nitrogen gave it a wonderful effect. It is absolutely a must try. In closing, if you want to really impress someone, this is your place. The food, the drinks, etc. I can't imagine a better location for a date. They have some stiff competition being located to some very nice going out places, but ignore that because the better bet is here at Slipstream. The better style, the better taste. You go to the other bars to get drunk, but you go to Slipstream to get to know someone, start a relationship, or really to enjoy your day. The interior of the space is airy, light and has an awesome skylight as well. The kitchen and bar are completely open without any obstruction. There are lots of tables, a bar area, etc. During the time I was there, the only thing that I would change was the music which was generic pop stuff. It detracted from the overall awesomeness of the space so I hope the owner reads it and goes in a more eclectic direction with the tunes. Otherwise, it's not really possible to improve this place. And with respect to the price, I actually found them to be pretty reasonable. The toast was cheap (like under $5 cheap...it's over $10 in San Francisco) and the breakfast bowl was totally worth whatever I paid for it. The drinks are pretty much the same as other third wave coffeeshops. I was okay with the price. You certainly do not get this kind of choice or atmosphere with any other shop in town, either! read more

While the staff are very friendly and the coffee tastes good, the prices are -- even by DC standards -- absolutely, bonkers insane, and the entire "concept" seems like looking for a solution to a problem that doesn't really exist. (And those are inevitably the worst kinds of solutions!) From their Web site: "The level of quality in coffee is rising exponentially, but it is progressing faster than the consumer's understanding. Single origin coffees and various preparation styles are appearing on menus turning what once was a relaxing trip to the coffee shop into a stressful experience. We are looking to provide a new level of service to fully extract the value of these options and help coffee drinkers find the perfect beverage for their taste." Ok, yeah, maybe every consumer -- customer? -- is not a trained barista straight out of Milan, but, this is really condescending, dude! And, "stressful experience"? Really? I hate this whole "first-world problems" meme -- because it's stupid -- but, yeah, talk about a first-world problem! And I'm not even sure it is a problem. "We see a shared solution centered on reducing the stress of the typical experience and allowing the beverage to shine. A Slipstream is the area of reduced resistance behind a moving object, and similarly our café hopes to provide a smooth path for the coffee and cocktail experience. We will provide understanding through a comfortable environment, engaging service and a selection of quality food and beverage options, then step out of your way." Again, what's stressful about ordering coffee? Teaching sixth graders -- I can say from personal experience -- is stressful. Barack Obama's job is probably stressful. Working at the 7-11 across the street is probably stressful. But ordering a $5.50 coffee or a $12 cocktail is stressful? On my visit, I ordered a pour-over coffee ($4.40) and a small, croissant-ish cinnamon roll ($3.30). It was a bit "stressful" at first to figure out where one goes to order: there is a "to-go" area near the espresso machine, but apparently if you want to have a seat, you need to order at the bar. But, once I paid for my coffee and got my pastry in a giant white box, I had to go back to the bar and wait for my coffee. (My sarcasm aside, the employees here are really, really friendly. The barista offered me a glass of water while my coffee was being brewed. The hostess checked twice to see if I was being served -- I feel bad for her, though, having to deal with this disjointed, stressful ordering experience all day long -- must be as stressful for her as it is for customers.) In addition to stressful ordering, it's a bit stressful figuring out the prices. I got the sense that there may be some cheaper coffee options only available for to-go service, but I'm not certain. (A regular-sized coffee costs either $4.40 or $5.50 -- a dollar extra for the "exclusive" Slipstream-only roast.) Also, as others have said and I've already said here, the prices are really insultingly high. For $4.40 (see my picture), you can have a croissant not much larger than the ones your mom and dad used to make from a can of Pillsbury dough, which, I mean to say, is really small. This is horrifically insane. (Well, then again, they are charging $5.50 for a cup of "exclusive" pour-over coffee, so I suppose all bets are off here.) I do think Slipstream could have a future -- the staff are friendly and the space is bright and airy, if a bit utilitarian with not-particularly-comfortable-looking wood furniture the dominant form of seating. Also, it's nice to see a coffee shop -- like a bar in Italy -- offering a mix of coffee and booze, and an environment that changes throughout the day. Nevertheless, Slipstream will have zero future -- even on a street where a lot of rich lawyers seek out entertainment -- if its owners continue to be greedy with these insane prices -- the $5.50 coffee, the $4 croissant and $7 slices of gourmet toast (yes, bloody hell, they have gourmet toast). And, probably, too, they should change their Web site, because I've never read something more condescending -- perhaps in my entire life -- than how they describe their business concept. Slipstream fills a void of coffee on the stretch of 14th Street NW formerly commanded by Caribou Coffee on the opposite corner. With Peet's yet to move in, and Dolcezza a mere block north, Slipstream ups the ante by offering the ultimate coffee-chaser (and repeat customer incentive) - booze. With hours tentatively set at 7am-11pm (and until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays), Slipstream is there to perpetuate the endless cycle of uppers and downers by alternating caffeine and alcohol in the form of espressos and cocktails. It's like a Red Bull/Vokda without the sweaty tank tops and fist-pumping, or a Four Loko back in the good old days, minus the additives, plus heat. Espresso drinks, made from beans sourced by MadCap, and served in tasting snifters, range in flavor profiles - ask your barista for guidance; and the teas are from a specialty tea purveyor from San Francisco. Likewise making a menu appearance from the Bay Area, albeit three years later, is toast. There's a goat-cheese-avocado toast, which probably doesn't feature rooftop-grown produce, but there are plenty of other dishes that will involve in-house (rather, on-house) greens. Don't expect Starbucks pricing - elevating the coffee experience also means a higher price point: Espresso starts at $4 (an exclusive, Slipstream-only blend is a dollar extra). But if you want cheap coffee, there's a 7-11 across the street. read more

Whatever you do, keep walking. In search of great coffee and breakfast on a rainy Sunday, we stopped in after reading the great Yelp ratings and reviews with high hopes. In the first place, the menu is WTF. Looking for breakfast- where are the scrambled eggs, bacon, pancakes, or oatmeal? Nothing came close to these standbys. Coffee was a let down and pretentious- elaborate tasting menu cards served alongside high clear glass carafes of pour over coffee that's **lukewarm** and tastes like beans. Not coffee beans. Like black beans blended into a warm pasty water. Because I came for breakfast, and couldn't find anything resembling such on the menu, I ordered toast. The toast is Texas style, with strange salty layers. Fine if all you want is bread. I left, still hungry, and walked across the street to Dolcezza for a cup of coffee. Bummer. I'm rarely in that neighborhood and will not go back to Slipstream again. There are lots more places that offer great coffee, cool ambiance, and variety on their menus, that I'd rather patronize. Confused. That's how my experience can be summed up in one word. The whole time I was there, I was confused. Or maybe I just misunderstood what was going on. I came by around 4pm on a weekday (holiday) and wandered around the front area. No one was at the front directing my friend and I where to go and what to do. Was I supposed to seat myself? Was I supposed to order at the coffee bar? Or was I supposed to order at the computers? Should I sit first and then order off the menu? Or do I order and then sit down? Do I pay after I get my food/drinks or at the cashier? No one told me anything, and so I was super confused. So after wandering, I finally walked up to the coffee bar and asked a barista how and what to order, and after I decided what drink I wanted, she walked away to make it without another word. She didn't say if I was supposed to wait there, sit down and wait, or pay first and then wait...Confused again. My friend and I decided to pick a seat in the back and wait... and wait...and then I finally got up and asked someone by the register what we were supposed to do. He said we could pay right at the register and they'd bring our order to us, and so I did. My friend and I needed to get some work down, so we worked on our laptops (free wifi!) until dinner rolled around. We ordered drinks and dinner, but that part was done by a waitress. But we had our laptops out doing work, so it was strange to have table service. Confused again. How come certain things we pay at the register, and other things we are served by a waitress and pay at the table? I asked someone who worked there, and she said they recently changed their POS system, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and come back again because the coffee was nice, but they need to make ordering and payment directions more clear. I'm also unsure whether this is supposed to be a casual place order at the front place (and do work etc) or a sit down place where they take your order. I think they need to make this decision soon and make it clear to the customers. On the food. The coffee was good and the open sandwiches we got were nice and light. The only thing is that one of the sandwiches said uni butter, but it tasted nothing like uni. Not sure if there was any uni in it at all. I did like the avocado sandwich which had a nice light whipped goat cheese cream on it. And overall, I do like the atmosphere. It's modern and clean, but quiet enough to have a conversation or get some work done. read more

Stopped into Slipstream around lunchtime today on their grand opening. The place appeared to still be buzzing with deliveries and some employees learning the ropes. As I walked up to the counter I was greeted immediately by the barista who explained to me the different pastries & dishes which were on display. I decided to order a cappuccino and the breakfast bowl. The cappuccino was very good, I would say on par with other coffee establishments in the area. The breakfast bowl, on the other hand, was amazing. Buttered rice, fresh shaved radish, asparagus, and a poached egg. The seating was plentiful and comfortable. Your typical hipster coffee shop music was playing throughout, but not so loud that it was annoying. Seems like it will be a great spot to come to hang out for a while, do some work, or just quietly enjoy your coffee and food. I think Slipstream will do well in the neighborhood, they are differentiated enough from the other coffee shops with their food selections and cocktails in the evening (of which I plan to come back and try). When Slipstream first opened, I was very excited to have a coffeehouse just around the corner from my apartment. The place quickly gained popularity and it always looked packed at almost all hours of the day whenever I passed by. Finally, one day, my fiancé and I decided to brave the crowd in order to try the coffee. I ended up letting the barista talk me into trying the chai latte. At $5 a cup, and after all the hype from the barista, I was expecting to get blown away. Instead, what I got was a very milky tea with a light chai flavor. I could hardly taste the cardamom and cinnamon. I avoided Slipstream after that but was still curious about the food. After a few months passed, I asked a friend to meet me there for brunch. Surprisingly, the place was only half as packed as it was during my first visit. It didn't take long for me to figure out why. After the host took me to a table, no server came by to take our order. After almost 25 minutes of waiting, I went to the counter to ask if we were supposed to order there. I was told that the waitress would come over so I sat back down. When the waitress finally came over and we told her what we wanted (the brioche eggs benedict for me and a chocolate banana muffin for my friend), the waitress told us that all the pastries were sold out except for two (neither of them what my friend wanted) and it would be a 20-minute wait for my order because they were behind on poached eggs. We immediately left after that. There are plenty of options on 14th Street. A shortage of pastries and no poached eggs on a Saturday afternoon, prime brunch time? Slipstream seems confused on what it wants to be: a coffee shop, a café, a restaurant, or a bar? It needs to figure out what it wants to be when it grows up, and quickly. It's the only way to fix the problems they're having or they will continue to lose business. read more

Much wow. Such cool. So hip. A friend and I came on an early Saturday morning and were told that table service wasn't offered yet, so we took a couple seats at the bar and dayum am I glad we did, cause that meant unrestrained access to bombarding our barista with questions on the single origin coffee list that was almost too fancy for us to handle. We actually ended up just confusing ourselves even more, so the good man (you da best Josh) had mercy and told us he would just whip something up for us. He served us two different single origins, the first coupled with snow jasmine tea + carbonated house soda blend and the second with a modest serving of dark chocolate (I would imagine also from some hip brand that I've never heard of). Lemme just say, the tea + soda blend...wow talk about tingling taste buds. Coffees were oh so smooth and flavors oh so rich. The housemade apple butter and sea salt toast + pork belly, poached egg and mustard seed cheese on buttered sammie buns = perfect breakfast portion sizes, plus both came with greens so you can feel a teeny bit better about treating yoself. My friend told me I should take my camera to the bathroom as well in case I discovered more marvels (which in case you're wondering, bathrooms were pretty standard). With an ample amount of wooden tables, generous streaks of natural sunlight filtering in, and cool toned wall accents, Slipstream's ambiance is unique to say the least. It's modern yet laid-back; just like yo favorite jeans, you can dress it up or dress it down. A bomb, diverse menu combined with winning service of pretentiousness level 0 and chill level 1000? I'm disappointed in my first experience here. All my friends recommended this place so I bookmarked it to try it when I got the chance and when I really did get a chance, I was disappointed. ATMOSPHERE: We came here late night for some drinks. This place looked classy and jazzy. Very modern look. FOOD: I was a little disappointed at the options on the menu. 3 desserts were offered but none jumped out at me. I kind of wanted the breakfast items that other people that posted about but they were not available at that time. My friends and I got the Homemade Chai, Carrot Tea, and the Nitrogen Iced Coffee. I found the Chai to be really really spicey.... so much that I could not take it. It was really zingy to my tongue. Thankfully, I was able to pass it off to my friend who ordered the Iced Coffee. She did not like her coffee...she did not find anything special with it and did not end up drinking it at all. We all relatively liked the Carrot tea. It was subtle but good and it came in a nice little mug and a tea pot with the extras. So total, the tea had 3 cups worth. Definitely worth it. Service: Here's where it got weird. For the most part, everyone that worked here was very nice and friendly from the moment we talked in. However, since I didn't like my Chai, my friend offered to share her tea with me. Since she had a whole teapot full and we all ordered something so it wasn't like we were trying to mooch off of one person.... we simply asked for an additional cup. To that request, we were met with a stern talking to by a bartender. He said "uhm... no. We don't do that. That would not be a cool thing to do because we prepared the tea for one person and it would not be cool to share." .... I don't get it. We all ordered something. She had too much tea and she wanted to share.... you want to forbid us to share with our friends? The whole situation was awkward and weird and made us feel very uncomfortable. Then the bartender went to go ask the manager and the manager said "sure they can have a cup!" and then he came back and gave us a cup..... but by then the moment had happened and the whole thing was awkward and unnecessary. I will mention the bar manager was really nice and someone had ordered an extra Tea and he gave it to us complimentary because he was going to pour it out anyways. It was really nice that he did that because 2 out of 3 of us did not like our drinks. But still, everything was a bit awkward so we drank our drinks (whatever we could) and left. I guess I have to go back and try their food and get them a 2nd chance.....but First impression was just not good. read more

Slipstream has been on my radar for a while, and I have been eager to check it out. The first time I attempted to go, I was meeting a friend for coffee and a quick breakfast. I was running late (life with kids!) and she arrived and just decided to get our stuff to-go. The barista gave her major attitude and told her that her/our to-go order would take at LEAST 1/2 hour (coffee and their toasts - nothing elaborate here). Yes, it was a Saturday morning, but my friend was totally turned off by the exchange, so we met up elsewhere. Despite that previous quasi-experience, I decided to try it again. So kiddies in tow, I went yesterday afternoon. I got a poached egg sandwich - served on a buttery brioche with arugula and aged cheddar. It was REALLY good. But my drink was a huuuuuuge letdown. I saw that they had a special house-made chai, and even though it was $5, I thought I ought to give one of their specialty drinks a shot. I don't know if it made a big difference that I got it iced instead of hot, but it was really disappointing - like a one or two star drink. The spices were lovely, but the drink itself was just like water! If I poured cinnamon and cloves into skim milk, it would've had the same effect. However, I must say that the staff was super friendly and attentive to my (weird) spinach allergy, so that goes in their favor. read more

I went to Slipstream for drinks and food one night and was so hungry that I had to stop again on the way home. I mean....sure it's very pretty. Coffee maybe is good (I didn't get to try it). I did like the cocktails I tried. At HH they have a few experimental ones that you can try for pretty cheap (I think they were $5 a drink) and they were very well made. The food is really what turned me off. I mean...toast for $7?! It is cheaper at HH but not by much. And for even $5 I would expect to maybe get two pieces of toast? I mean, come on. The lobster rolls were also good, but they were so tiny. I just felt gouged. Because I don't like this place does that mean my hipster status will be revoked now? read more

Slipstream is extremely underrated - and the selfish side of me kinda hopes it stays that way because I love this place! Literally 2 minutes from my house I find myself here too often. For a coffee shop, they are doing something right because this place is packed before and after work! My only complaint is they open at 7ish so when I walk by after my 6 am workout they aren't quiet ready for my energized face. I am in love with the kambucha latte, they will describe it as their spin on a pumpkin spice latte. I am from CA and CO so kambucha has become an obsession of mine - mix it with coffee and I am one happy girl. Their other drinks are great. And oh ya... HAPPY HOUR. Coffee shop turned into a happy hour spot is brilliant and this place is fun to hangout at after work. Their cocktails are also unique and delicious! Haven't tried the food in the afternoon yet. But their breakfasts are delicious. The avo toast is so good, and on the lighter side. I also get he muffins Togo sometimes. They also have more filling options. I stopped by Slipstream on Sunday night and was pleasantly surprised to find a new neighborhood spot! We had a drink at the bar first. I was skeptical at first when they asked me what I like and asked me to trust them but it was actually a fun experience and my "last word" hit the spot. How refreshing this was, being so used to bartenders who get frustrated when you don't know what you want or have special requests... We were so pleased with our drinks, we decided to move to a table and order some food. First of all, the chairs were so comfortable!!! I even mentioned this to the server because I usually can't sit for long without getting uncomfortable. Turns out the chairs were all hand made in Amish country. Love that. We ordered the deviled egg, which came with the most delicious piece of toast, ever. Then we got the gnudi (why did I not know these existed??) and the asparagus salad. We thought these would be something light to hold us over but ended up being our dinner- we were so full! The food was amazing. Although I came for dinner, I did glance at the coffee menu out of curiosity and the prices seemed reasonable, especially the breakfast items. I came here one late morning with my family, while in D.C! The place was very crowded when we arrived, but had a cool vibe so we wanted to stay to grab a quick breakfast before heading out! We sat on the bar top at Slipstream, chatted a bit with the barista's, took the obligatory picture, ate a little, and headed out for the day! There is not much to say about the food since I only had a muffin, so I'd be interested in going back for some real brunch! I did try my dad's french toast casserole which was delicious and spongy! Something interesting to note is that they do not have an actual kitchen in house, therefore they have a few appliances (i.e. no stove top, just one burner) and make do with that! Oh my, oh my! Finally! A coffee/brunch spot DC needed so badly! YES, after being to hundreds of lunches in DC. YES, after drinking gallons of bottomless mimosas and coffees - this place is so unique, its just a different universe, really. The place is huge with three distinct seating areas - the front being the most interesting one, with lots of sunshine through ceiling to floor windows. It feels fresh, spacious, non-pretensions, bright. The menu - I don't know where to start. Variety of everything and anything: small toasts, small plates, a bit bigger brunch staples, drinks with alcohol, drinks without, coffees, teas, pastries, whatnot. Bunch of great flavors you won't have elsewhere - buckwheat and avocado, radishes, whipped goat cheese, fresh veggies, homemade jams, pork bellies for you, fans. Everything is reasonably priced. We spent almost two hours just playing with the menu and ordering one dish after another. But besides all that - this place is open late every day and on weeknights masks itself as a cozy coffee shop with many people working, reading, chatting. No rush, all is cool - there is plenty of space for anyone contemplating their next big start up. read more

I wish Slipstream was closer to my house! I would be there probably everyday! The interior is really cute and spacious. The menu (both food and drinks) is actually pretty large! I loveee the cocktail and non-alcoholic coffee drinks that they offer. I seriously would love to try them all. Everything sounded amazing. Gotta love innovative concoctions. I can't remember the name of the drink I ordered, but it consisted of espresso, lemon zest, and tonic water. I opted for a drink without alcohol this time around because this sounded too interesting to pass up. I never thought to mix espresso with tonic water, but it worked! Brilliant combo! It was very refreshing. My sister got the Unicorn Tears (cocktail), which was also very good. I've seen pictures of their toast on yelp, so I of course had to order one. My sister and I shared the avocado + goat cheese toast and the quinoa tomato salad. Both were amazing! I'm not even a huge goat cheese fan, but I enjoyed the toast. My sister did mention that she wish the toast wasn't so chewy, but I actually liked the texture. Something as simple as avocado toast..tasted so complex and delicious. The tomato salad had a nice variety of tomatoes and was very light and tasty. Service was quick and attentive. I'll definitely be back!! read more

Went here for a Saturday brunch with friends. I was excited to try it after the glowing reviews it got. I was also excited to try a new coffee shop, after having hit most of the ones in the DuPont area. The atmosphere was very posh, and modern. The tables were packed in tight though, and you at times felt on top of the table next to you. It was hard to find seats for 5 people, we ended up having to wait around for tables to leave until we could finally all be seated together. Food ordered- I ordered the french toast which was phenomenal. It's not a traditional french toast, but instead almost looks like a muffin. It had the perfect amount of crisp from the sugary top, but when you broke into it, it was fluffy and delicious. The apple chutney that it came with tasted fresh, and had a great amount of spice. We also ordered a cinnamon roll, which was one of the best cinnamon rolls I had ever had. The frosting was just sweet enough, and the bread was light and fluffy. My boyfriend ordered a hot chocolate, and I ordered a cappuccino both were good. I was excited to see that they used Madcap coffee, as that's what lots of the coffee places back home (Grand Rapids, MI) use. Service- Since you order at the counter and then the food is brought to you there's not a huge interaction with staff, but the staff seemed relatively friendly. The women at the counter seemed annoyed that we were waiting around and moving tables together, but there were barely any tables for larger groups. Cons- Only major con was the lack of seating for larger groups, but all in all it was worth the wait for a table. Will definitely plan on going back, but not with a group of more than 2. read more

Slipstream has a warm and inviting atmosphere with tons of natural lighting and homey decor filled with Amish furnishings and everything else that one would expect from a place inspired by Etsy. But also. The food and drink here are delicious. This is a fantastic brunch spot!! Slipstream reminds me that often times the most gratifying dishes are the ones that are the least complex. I ordered the breakfast bowl with shaved radish, lemon, rice, and a fried egg as well as the toast with avocado and goat cheese mousse. Healthy, simple and delicious --- Both items were flavorful and substantial. The magic of these dishes are in the ingredients. This didn't feel like restaurant food to me. The drink options are very good here. Lots of great coffee and tea. Plus the staff really know what they're talking about and are super nice, so if you are unsure what to get and have questions about different brews or teas, this is the place to ask them. My girlfriend got the hot chocolate and they actually drew a snowman in it. As I am totally obsessed with latte art, yes, this totally made by day. Can you say adorable? Love this place. I can only speak for my single experience here. I ordered the Pandan Shakerado. My inner filipina screamed when I saw this on the menu. I asked the cashier lady about it. She never tried it, but said customers claimed it was "too sweet." Who am I kidding? That was not enough to turn me away from trying it. I can see why people would say that, but I thought it was delicious. The flavor screams pandan, but still has just enough espresso to pass off as a latte. I was there at 11am on a Thursday, and the whole restaurant was occupied. I can see myself dining in sometime, and coming back for that iced latte. read more

Finally got a chance to try Slipstream after a couple of failed attempts. I used to live around the corner and remember this place as an art gallery/event space, so its definitely an upgrade, IMO. 14th street was really lacking a casual, but high quality spot to get a coffee or a light meal, and Slipstream filled that gap wonderfully. Service: The hostess and our waitress couldn't have been nicer. We sat around for about 45 minutes waiting for our friend to meet us, who was stuck in the #SurpriseSnow2016 in Virginia. She ended up getting in a car accident in her uber and couldn't join us after all, but our waitress was more than accommodating and patient. Food/Drink: Still not drinking this month (booo), but I ordered an almond milk latte, and my friend got a hot green tea. The presentation of the tea is adorable and feels so fancy. Coffee turned out to be a bad idea, as I rarely drink coffee, let alone at night, and couldn't fall asleep! The coffee itself could have been a little warmer, but I appreciated that they had Stevia sweetener! Turns out neither of us were that hungry, so I got the kale/sunchoke salad and my friend ordered the famous avocado toast! My salad was good, nothing amazing, but nice to have just a clean salad option on the menu! I agree with some of the other yelpers that the cheese/avocado to bread ratio on the avocado toast is a bit off, but she loved it and honestly it looked delicious. Alas, Im abstaining from bread and cheese this month as well. There is legit nothing to live for. They have a food/drink happy hour that goes till 7, and I appreciate that you can order it all through the restaurant! Tried the avocado toast; it was good. Here's where they went wrong: They're supposed to be this artsy, hip coffee shop with healthy bites, but instead it smells like a bad deli reeking of oil-ridden eggs and bacon. Nope, not doing it for me. I'll go have my avocado toast experience somewhere else. Update: It has been almost 1 hour since we walked out of the Forsaken Land of Slipstream on 14th. We're still dealing with the aftermath: Our clothes smell like burnt pig fat; our hair smells likes burnt pig fat; our entire existence smells like burnt pig fat. If you are looking for a cafe that is comfy, open late, and serves good food: this is the one! Very cozy environment with comfortable seating and plenty of wall plugs for chargers. Very quiet music and all the traditional hum of a coffee shop. I order the Bread and Spreads and was blown away with deliciousness. When I went back to buy another baguette, they didn't charge me at all! The service was great and very patient. read more

I don't drink coffee but I really enjoy the food here. I had the breakfast bowl $7.50 and added bacon for $3. The breakfast bowl has rice that pretty well seasoned, market greens and a perfectly poached egg. Today the bowl had crispy green radishes which added a great crunch to the dish and the braised pork was very tender. The most common toast that was ordered around us was the sliced avocado and whipped goat cheese which was no surprise. I have had it before and found very creamy and delicious on their thick hearty bread. We opted for the chickpea and harissa toast which was a little disappointing, the flavors were a little muddled. I am a creature of habit. On Sundays, I can be found sipping my morning caffeine at either Peregrine inside Union Market or at A Baked Joint. But this time, my weekend dining companion and I opted for something new. And I'm so glad we did! She arrived way before me so she could get some work done. There's ample table seating for those with laptops and decent wifi and power outlets. We shifted to the communal table once I arrived so there was a bit more room. I opted for a cappuccino and the breakfast bowl which today, consisted of buttered rice, shaved radish slices, a poached egg and some greens. Just a few minutes passed before both items were brought to my table and I just crushed them both. They were just perfect. The egg was beautifully poached and speckled with cracked pepper. And my cappuccino was just so smooth and delicious. Gah. I need this again immediately. It was one of the most instagrammable meals I've had in awhile. (Yeah, I hate myself for saying that too.) Oh and the service was great too. I ordered at the counter, but someone was always refilling my water glass which was much appreciated. And they cleared our plates. read more

In one word: unique. I left feeling excited, this place was a total score. Cold brew coffee? No. Better. Nitro iced coffee. From what I gathered it is brewed in a keg, served from a tap, and delicious. It has a foamy head on top and tastes sort of like a Guinness. Guinness is not your thing? Well this is, trust me. Think smooth and vanilla. To accompany the coffee, I got poached eggs and avocado on toast. The meal size was perfect, it tasted great, and you can feel good about eating it. You have plenty of options to customize your toast so there's something for everybody. I'm curious about the libations but did not have enough time during my trip to DC to find out. I tried to pull up a menu online to see what I was missing out on but it is not available yet. The blog has been active for most of the year so that helped solidify 4 stars for me. Coffee and cocktails are two things that can really stand out from the crowd when somebody takes the time to go the extra mile and I really appreciate that personal touch. Happy hour every day. Great deals. Amazing coffeeshop. What more could a guy want? I almost want to live in Logan just so I could be a regular here. I am a fan of the simple shot of espresso, and Slipstream's version is very strong and velvety, very good stuff and served with a phenomenal piece of soft toffee. I also needed to try something more exciting, and the chai is just what I hoped, much less sweet than what you get elsewhere, with more spice and cinnamon but still creamy and delicious. Quite small though, and for $5, that's a shame. For food, the pastries are superb. Fresh in-house pastries have become the recent fad, thank god, and Slipstream is keeping up with the joneses. Their almond toffee scone is out of this world. It tasted like it was made mere minutes before ordering, and that makes all the difference in a pastry. Nice flavors from the toffee too, and I think there was some chocolate in there. Yummy. I came in based on reports of their nitro iced coffee on tap. Oh my did that sound amazing. Even better sounding was a cocktail made from said nitro coffee. They had one on the happy hour menu, which had the coffee, falernum, and orange bitters. Oh baby, it is delicious. You can taste the coffee, but it also tasted like a fruity cocktail treat. I was skeptical the coffee and orange flavors would mesh, but it was really fantastic. The space is large and airy, looks like a great place to read a book or have lunch, or grab a drink. So few places mix the coffeeshop and bar concepts - I love that they go for it and do it well. The one kink in the half casual cafe, half sit-down bar/restaurant concept is that the ordering is sometimes confusing. If you sit in back, you are supposed to wait for a server, but there is not much communication, so you often have to wait a long time for someone to get sent over. I have had to ask the host to get someone and have seen others do so as well. Still, a unique place in my pantheon. read more

A beautiful space with an interesting menu and lots of veg options. But the food and coffee are just good. We started with a toast of peach butter and salt, which was mildly sweet and a nice compliment to the Texas toast. The French toast casserole was deliciously sweet with berries and syrup but really more like bread pudding .The vegetable ragu was a nicely spicy contrast but too cumin heavy. The flight of Ethiopian coffee was fun but nothing surprising. The staff was friendly. Overall it's a fun place for brunch with some interesting combinations. But the food lacks a certain wow factor that the menu suggests. read more
