What a hidden gem! Slimak is a cute cafe located on 4th Avenue in Sunset Park. I had breakfast with some friends here this morning after conveniently being in the area. The cafe is fairly spacious with seating in the front as well as in the back. There are a few tables, with umbrellas, outside. The vibe is..your quirky neighbors' apartment where you can sip a coffee and do work all day. Staff wear masks at all times and there are plexiglass barriers between tables. There's a good variety options on the menu between toasts, egg dishes, and bowls. Of course there are your standard pastry options. I saw a croissant sprinkled with everything bagel seasoning in the pastry case, I may choose that next time. I had the Sophia Toast [$9] which is an avocado toast with feta, pumpkin seeds, chile flakes, honey. The chile flakes and honey make this toast slightly more unique, i.e a kick of heat and sweetness. For the price and size, I'd probably order two if I was very hungry. I also had a delightful latte [$4] which is a decent size and comes in a cute red mug. We met a friend and a friend's friend for brunch for LDW. You order and pay at the cashier. Then you get a wooden spoon with a number for your order. K and I ordered French Toast sandwich with egg and bacon; Pork belly sandwich on brioche bread. Two Viet coffees. I liked the coffee- it was made like an espresso over ice with condensed milk and milk. I could taste the chicory and mild bitterness of the coffee. The Viet coffee was little sweet but good on the caffeine for me. The French toast was delicious and fluffy. The bacon was crispy. The egg was sunny side- it was solid. I would definitely order this again. The pork belly was cooked throughly and placed with pickled carrots, and vinegar purple coleslaw. The pork belly was a little dry and the slaw was a little sour but it was a good concept. Maybe I'll try the apple chicken sausage next time. The staff was nice. They were understaffed, they bussed our plates even though it was mainly self service. And they let us sit and chat after our meals and coffees finished. I was first averse to such a place opening up in my neighborhood, but secretly love that Sunset Park is getting more spaces for creative types to just sit and think. This was my first time coming here - I got here a bit on the early side at 9 AM, but I was glad I did. Sitting here for three hours, I realise just how popular this place is - there was not a solid 5 minutes that went by without someone ordering an item. I went with a tea and a chicken sausage breakfast wrap - the tea was your standard, while the chicken sausage really surprised me in its taste and fullness. It came with a small side salad which was great for the price and it was extremely tasty. I was not expecting so much for what I paid (8$ for the wrap). I also haven't felt hassled at all to leave or buy anything, and I've been sitting here for a while. This place is really friendly and cozy with hipster fixings, but it doesn't leave me with the disillusionment that they will shove vegan propaganda down my throat. Their coffee and food is all of the farm to table variety with innovative combos and flavors-not your average coffee shop. Perfect spot to dine solo and read or get some work done. The decor is simple wood & brick-modern, yet cozy. My latte was wonderful and the tofu, egg wrap was yummy (and filling-I couldn't finish it.) They were accommodating on holding the onions. Counter service with them bringing it to you at your table. There were so many wonderful things I wanted to try and I'd highly recommend coming with a friend and ordering sweet and savory items to split and share. I came here today with my boyfriend after looking for a spot for breakfast. I'll be honest I have never noticed this place before and I probably wouldn't if I wasn't actively looking for this spot after getting the location from Yelp. The atmosphere had a comfy kind of small cafe/homey vibe to it. The inside was very nice and everything is laid out for you. There is a pile of menus you can grab to view the food options but there was chalkboard menus on the wall that display their drink menus. You can also purchase little snacks that are behind the glass display. A surprising fun fact; The place is very much a wide hallway, it stretches the avenue actually but you wouldn't notice unless you walked to the end of the place to use the bathroom. I ordered the Belgian waffle (pictured) with fresh berries (+3$) and syrup (+1$). It was very sweet, fresh, crunchy and fluffy. I usually grab coffee and go on the mornings that I stay in Brooklyn. Cold Brew is the way to go here! Order your food at the counter and have a seat! For this Thanksgiving weekend, I had to pleasure to have finally try the breakfast here with my family. Staff was very friendly and welcoming as always. The menu has many delicious options and it took us a little bit to decide what to order. We went for the English Muffin Sandwich, Avocado Toast, Creamy Scrambled Eggs with Smoked Salmon, Slimak Cobb Salad, Zesty Chopped Salad, and Ranchero Egg Wrap. Ingredients were extremely fresh! I really liked my Avocado Toast with the sourdough bread instead of the normal multi-grain bread. It also comes with a pistachio pesto twist that makes it stand out. Fried Egg on top was nicely cooked with the yolk still oozing out when I poked it. It was really good! Ranchero Egg Wrap was another favorite. Scrambled eggs with beans, cheddar cheese, onions and green sauce on the side that makes it even better. I am usually not a breakfast wrap fan but I was super impressed on how soft and pillowy the scrambled eggs were. Creamy Scrambled Eggs with Smoked Salmon. This was another shocker dish that I really liked! Eggs were so soft and pillowy with pieces of smoked salmon that really added good flavor to it! English Muffin Sandwich comes with two fried eggs, spinach, arugula, and avocado. Add the bacon too! This was a small sandwich with big flavors. Pretty much this was a hit for me because I like every ingredient in this sandwich by itself and combining them together was perfection. Both the Zesty Chopped and Cobb salad were good. It was very big and fresh bowl of salad packed with healthy goodness in every bite. I would ask for salad dressing on the side since I only like little dressing on my salads. Cute and casual place for brunch close to industry city. We ordered skirt steak and eggs(15), avocado toast with bacon(10) and sides of egg white and apple sausage(11). I have to say food took a while but that's okay since we weren't in a rush. But skirt steak was very chewy, avocado toast was small and mediocre. The two sides we order for our toddler ended up being 11 dollars, but the sausage was delicious. I also ordered frozen hot chocolate, not too sweet so my toddler really enjoyed it. The mango was underripe, but I still enjoyed it. Not sure it's worth the $10 but that may be my mistake. I liked that there was a mix of fruit. The latte tasted great, nicely balanced. Excited that I can grab brunch items without venturing too far out in the city. Slimak is only a 5 minute walk from the train station, and although it's fairly new customers/locals sure enough have found their way to fill this cafe on weekends comfortably. Since it's new and a little hidden, this place isn't crowded which keeps staff attentive, accommodating and all smiles. Pastries are 5/5. They warm it up for you, serve it on cute plates, and have croissants from Balthazaar in Manhattan and other sweet pastries. My best friend and I are in love with the scones and croissants here which go great with their coffee. Their butter here is to die for, which melts right on, making the spread quite easy. I've tried their normal butter & jalapeno infused which went very well with their cornbread (baked fresh here). For their food, I personally enjoy their everyday items more than their brunch. Though it is certainly cheaper than the city, portions are a little smaller and tend to be on the saltier side when I went on Saturday - maybe it's the salmon. I came on a Friday (sorry, they don't consider it a weekend here) and had the salmon egg scramble on toast. The scramble was fluffy, well seasoned and went great with the saltier salmon, so I loved this dish. My best friend had their avocado toast which was topped with a perfectly poached egg #eggporn. ** Don't forget to ask for a stamp card if you're getting coffee! There's a lot of good things about Slimak but they're all tempered by its location in the dead zone of Sunset. Like, it's a super cute place. An oasis if you will, with a diverse and interesting menu, not to mention a full coffee bar and several delicious looking pastries and baked goods. But.... it's in the middle of nowhere Sunset. You sit wherever, order at a counter and they bring the food over when it's ready. I had the fried goat cheese, prosciutto and walnut 'salad' (it was mostly meat, baby, but I loved it) and a hazelnut latte and it set me back around $20 with tip. Which in Manhattan is par for the course but for Sunset is a little bit painful. BUT it's a newish place, the salad was excellent, (the coffee was just 'okay') and I'd definitely go back because... there's not much else around on 4th avenue between 25th and 45th street. The place itself is charming, the staff are friendly, it's clean and bright and trendy... you basically can't be disappointed if you're looking for a cute coffee shop / lunch joint. I came here for breakfast on a Sunday morning. The place was pretty full of people surprisingly at 8:00 AM. The place was also larger than I expected. There was a lot of seating and there were a lot of plugs for people with laptops in the front. We ordered the broccoli cheddar quiche, the avocado toast with bacon, a coffee, and a matcha latte. They give you a number to place on your table. It did take a while for the food to be delivered. The food was fresh and tasty. I really liked the quiche. The eggs were very fluffy. This is a true hidden gem! I had the avocado toast with bacon and it was to die for! The bacon was one of the best I've ever had. I loved the decoration on the plate, it really showed that they care. My boyfriend ordered a waffle with walnuts and banana, and they even put mint on the side. It was delicious. He also ordered (he eats a lot ) a ranchero wrap and he couldn't even finish it. It came with a side of green sauce that was not spicy but was really flavorful. It also had a side of salad, which my boyfriend (he doesn't like salads) even said "even the salad is good... this is my new favorite restaurant in Brooklyn." The cappuccino and the cortado was good. As soon as they started construction on this place, my husband was so curious. He met the owner right away & gave me the heads up about the place, so we were customers right from the start. Ever since they opened, we've opted to outsource (on average) at least 1 brunch a week - to give me a break from cooking and to treat ourselves. Our kids get to play with some toys that we save exclusively for restaurants plus coloring books/crayons & we indulge in reading the books that are special to the Slimak kid library in the back of the cafe. Anything so my husband & I can sometimes even indulge in the second round of coffee after we finish eating. I just pulled some pics to share of my favorite foods from countless visits. You order at the counter and then have the food brought to your table. The decor is modern, hip with lots of grays and a pop of red in the bar stools. Parking is still reasonable in this neighborhood, especially on weekends. We came early on Sunday morning (9am) and the place was empty. Service is very kind and polite with a smile.
