Pizza is consistently really good. My biggest issue is calling ahead. I've called in 1.5 hours, even 3 hours before. I get there and it's never ready and needs another 15-20 minutes. Small problem really, but that's my only complaint over the years. All in all, the food is very good. read more

August 6, 2021 Went into Slater's today - lunch for me and my brother - and it was great. The pizzas were amazing (Sausage and peppers for my brother, Mushroom & bacon for me). Coming out of the oven, they were steaming hot and smelled so good that it was hard to sit and let them cool for a moment. Our waitress, Sandy, was incredibly nice and very, very welcoming. The food is everything you could hope for - fresh, hot, fast, and priced right. I'm really glad that Slater's stayed open and survived COVID, because it's exactly the kind of place that we need. PS - don't order anything more if you're going to tackle a pizza by yourself. It's way more food than anyone can handle (and that's a great thing). PPS - the tables are spaced apart enough that you don't feel crowded or at all unsafe. They're obviously careful about that and it's a great thing. read more

Last night was my second recent visit to Slaters to see the band, Beat Street. I'm an old guy with a hearing aid and a limp, and I thought I'd been given a first-class ticket to hell. The place so jammed with people I was reminded of a Japanese subway car at rush hour. With no hope of ever sitting down, I was tempted to knock the drummer off his stool. I didn't eat though everyone around me devoured their food as if it were their last meal. I ordered three drinks (I buy for others on rare occasions), and that's why I'm up early writing this. The two waitresses/bartenders I dealt with are the most amazing women. I yelled my order, and they were instantly responsive. Juggling trays of food, they plow through gabbing, dancing, oblivious customers like snowplows in the alps. They made me love my job as a carpenter stuck on a roof in a rainstorm, but happy with the thought I don't have to deal with mayhem. I don't know their names; Sandy might be one, but rarely have I seen more competent and brave servers. read more

So given Slaters focus on BBQ I decided to get a cheese pizza with brisket as a topping. First impression was those cubed chunks of brisket are pretty large for a pizza. So large it became a fork and knife exercise due to the flop of the crust. Didn't get to far with the eating before the realization that a lot of these large cubes are not brisket but just fat. Doesn't get much nastier than that folks, big chunks of inedible, gelatinous fat. This is pretty basic stuff and a $20 lesson for me. read more

Was there last Friday to eat in. A little bit of a wait on the food, but I didn't think it was a big deal. It was a Friday night and they were busy, what can you do? The seating outside was nice and spacious so it felt safe. The black and blue pizza was legendary. But most of all, the wait staff was ridiculously nice. To be clear, I review the BBQ. Most places I go are strictly BBQ. But some places like Slater's is more than just BBQ. I would say that many people know Slaters a HELL of a lot more for their Wood Fire Pizza, including me. Though it definitely presents itself as a BBQ joint if you happen to be driving by or on their website. BUT! As a BBQ place it's ... meh, But the Pizza! I honestly would like to see it in a Best Pizza competition. It's one of the best I have ever had anywhere and I've done my damn New Haven pizza tour. So if you're searching around testing BBQ spots and happen to come across this place, you'll be a little disappointed but grab one of dem PIZZAZ to go and have a party. That being said, on to the BBQ. Not a lot of BBQ to offer really. Ribs and Pulled Pork and some sides ... that's it Ribs were maybe 4 inches, I don't know if it was the cut or if they typically do the super curved ribs. Good hunk of meat on them though considering the size, sauce all over it (don't like it when they do that) meat was ok, they say smoked for 3.5 or 4 hours, not terrible but nothing to get excited over. Cold on the inside though, and that's all she wrote for me. That means this stuff was frozen or wicked cold and thrown in the Microwave. Nope The sauce was pretty good though, vinegary, grit, good zing. What real BBQ should be. Beans were beans, coleslaw was coleslaw, cornbread was pretty good but probably jiffy mix or something Whole platter came garnished with some lettuce and sliced pickled banana peppers. I can appreciate the effort sometimes but NOT IN BBQ! BBQ is supposed to be so good you don't need Greens to make it look like it's something special. Again. This place has great food and atmosphere. Similar to all of the other reviews below, they were very understaffed. When our waitress did come over, we ordered everything. Drinks, app and dinner. Thank goodness we did or we would have been there all night. Our waitress was very friendly and they were doing the best they could with the little help they have. Would not come here for a quick bite to eat. If looking for a nice place to go out for a while and are in no rush then recommend this place. Nachos were amazing. read more

This is a cute place with plenty of outside dining. In the winter time it's probably kind of tight especially if they have live music. However, we were mostly disppointed in the food. The pork ribs and the chicken wings were fine, especially the ribs. The sauce is just right, not too sweet not too salty. But that was it. The sides were an embarrassment. Very small corn muffins for corn bread, baked beans in a size container of what you get for takeout sauce, the same for the coleslaw. We didn't try the pizza because we were looking for barbeque before we went apple picking but what we saw going by our table looked good. Excited for live music all summer outside on the patio and under their awesome pavilion. I have been going to their Open "Mike" since the beginning (8 years) and it is such an incredible group of musicians of all genres who are so supportive of each other - a real listening crowd. Mike Kelly does an amazing job making everyone sound great! The Slater's team is also super friendly. The brick oven pizza is delicious and the wings are some of the very best! This is a truly special place. I visited on a Thursday night. It turned out to be an Open Mike night. Local musicians of all ages came to play. They ranged from very talented to good. The community really came out to support their local musicians. It was a wonderful experience. I went to Slater's as someone I met in passing said it was the best pizza around. It really is good pizza. The crust is wonderful, cracker like. It is not too cheesy or saucy. The service experience was both good and bad. I found the servers to be very nice and professional. They were just overwhelmed. I sat at the bar. So, they were right in front of me. Yet, it would take a long while to get a beer. I think the issue is one of training and management. Still, with the wonderful food, incredible community and atmosphere, and servers who were warm, but harried, it is very easy to recommend Slater's. read more

Slater's is a nice option for dinning as opposed to the chain restaurants. Cozy interior and fun outdoor seating. The pulled pork is delicious on nachos and mac & cheese. We'll be back and start with the sampler plater which includes brisket, pork and ribs, then order a pizza. They're cooked in what appears to be wood-fire brick oven. We stopped here for an early dinner after hiking in the area. It's a small cozy place - and service was friendly and efficient. I had the Slater's Street Tacos with brisket and they were amazing! Highly recommend! Portion comes with three tacos but they were so filling - I only managed to finish two! My partner had the brisket meal and he really enjoyed it. The BBQ is better than average, but the staff made me feel that they were going out of their way to serve me. It was a Tuesday night and the place wasn't even crowded. Returned about a year later and the service is even worse. You walk in the door, you have to take it upon yourself put your name on a chalkboard No staff acknowledges your presence, or offers you a drink, NOTHING!!! I ordered a large mushroom pizza, take-out. The menu on their website advertises a large pizza for $12.50 and added vegetables for $1.25. They charged me $13.25 for the pizza and $1.50 for the added mushrooms. And the mushroom pizza itself? I've ordered pizzas from Domino's that have had more mushrooms on a single slice than this entire pizza had on it. The pizza possessed a scant handful of mushrooms, clearly added as an afterthought. A couple of slices had barely any mushrooms on them at all. As in maybe two. Two mushrooms on a slice does not a mushroom pizza make! The pie was floppy and tasteless. When I contacted the business over their regularly-updated Facebook page, they read - but did not respond - to my complaint. Too busy updating Facebook to properly run a restaurant, I guess. I like pizza and was hoping to find a regular local joint. I hope that losing my business was worth it to them, as I plan to warn everybody (including the family who recommended it to me) and find another restaurant to service my pizza needs. I advise you do the same because at Slater's, the customer comes last. UPDATE: The owner reached out to offer me a refund, which I have gratefully accepted, so I'll add a star to my review. While I likely won't return, I'm thankful for the restitution and the customer service. read more

Whether or not you're in the area or an hour away, make sure to take the time and stop by. You won't regret it. This is my go-to place for a fun Friday boy's night out. Coming from a college 30 minutes away, Slater's has always been able to comfort my brutal post-exam traumas. The service is always on point, with the perfect combination of a warm family environment alongside comportment excellence. The food here never fails to hit the spot. My personal favorites are the Pulled Pork Nachos, North 95 Pizza, and Baby Ribs. The Pulled Pork Nachos are light but savory. Delicious pulled pork over banana peppers, cheese, and nachos? Talk about a scrumptious appetizer. My mouth waters whenever I wait for them to come out. The North 95 Pizza always puts me into a food coma (a delicious food coma). I don't care how full I already am, I'm always capable of fitting another slice. I believe the pizzas are wood-fried, I have no idea what that means but I'm assuming that means cooked to PERFECTION. Im not going to say much about the Baby Ribs because one line will explain it all: the meat is so tender it falls off when it gets picked up. (If you don't get the hint, it's absolutely finger-licking delightful) Originating from Los Angeles, California, the foodie lifestyle is huge and I just wish Slater's opened a chain near me. I'm surprised that they don't have a perfect 5 star rating. The yelpers who made bad reviews either had a terrible day or are just outrageous. I have to admit, I didn't want to like this place when I first arrived. What kind of BBQ place does pizza and bbq? How dare they. $10 for a BBQ sandwich? $11 for an individual pizza? hmmmm. I was already planning my yelp review in my head when I walked in and saw the atmosphere looked more like a Cracker Barrell restaurant than a good ol' bbq place. Then the sandwich came and I changed my mind. The pork was actually tender and moist. It was not something you'd get in a crock pot like a lot of supposed bbq places. It was not something that was destroyed and dried out sitting on a grill instead of in a smoker, like other bbq places in MA. I am not saying this comes anywhere close to real pit bbq. But it is as pleasant a pulled pork sandwich as I've had in Massachusetts. It comes with a bag of Wachusett potato chips (blah) and an amazingly homemade and tasty cole slaw. A little on the sweet side but not dripping with mayonaise like others I've tried. Its cool and refreshing and I could have probably ate a pint of it. They seem to know how to use fresh ingredients and make things the right way. The quality control was spot on. Of course, I also came 30 minutes after they opened. The true test will be to go back at 2 p.m. after the pork has been sitting for several hours. The pizzas looked average but I didn't try one so I won't speculate. However, I will say they offered some pretty nice looking creations such a bbq pizza and a buffalo chicken pizza. The side dishes are pretty much non-existant. I saw a mac and cheese on the kid's menu but not as a side dish and I wasn't about to pay $5 for a side. There were no mashed potatos or anything else. Kind of weird for a bbq joint. I'd suggest adding a few well made 'traditional' bbq sides to the menu as the sandwich and cole slaw wasn't really as filling as it should have been for around $10. I can see where during crowded times there would be a bit of a nightmare atmosphere, especially when kids are involved. It is an open space with tiny tables (my ass bearly fit on the tiny seat) and had sort of a cafeteria in the country vibe. The staff seemed very nice. Excellent food, relaxed casual space, but noisy at times. An uncommonly good pizzeria outside of Boston, Slater's is becoming a favorite as we get used to living in Central MA, after a decade or so in the city. While rustic, the pizza is good and the coffee tasty, and the free wifi makes it a nice place to land at lunch. That fifth star is held back because it can often feel like you're in a romper room: screaming, running kids and a high ambient noise level aren't mitigated by any kind of separation or wall within the large, open dining room, and there's too little outdoor seating to accommodate more than a handful of diners. read more

I just choked down what had to be the worst pizza I've ever eaten. This isn't the first time we've been to Slaters, but it will be the last. And it isn't the first time we've had this experience, but it will be the last. This time, I called for one large pizza with mushrooms and sausage and was told 60 minutes. For a pizza. When I walked in, it was ready and sitting there under two other pizzas and based on past experience immediately wondered how long it was sitting there. Got it home in 8 minutes tops and it was cold. The pizza looked like it was just slapped together with the toppings mostly in the center of the pie, sauce and burnt crust on the outer two inches around the pie. In addition, the wood ash was overwhelming and it had zero flavor. It was terrible. Not sure how you can screw up a pizza this badly. read more

This update is based on two more visits: We had the same server I mentioned in the first part of this review, Sandy. She was attentive and friendly. The pulled pork on the nacho plate was, as expected, deliciously smoked with a slightly sweet, smoke flavor. My highlight was the ribs. In my previous review, I had ordered ribs but brought them home and eaten them after my review. They had only light smoke flavor. This visit was a whole new ballgame. They were as flavorful as the pulled pork. Beautiful bark, delicious smokey, slightly sweet taste. There was some light BBQ sauce squirted on when served, which wasn't necessary because the meat was so flavorful. I noted my approval to Sandy who said they had just come from the smoker, so a perfect time to order them. About a week after that, I picked up pulled pork nachos to bring home. Though still excellent, the pork didn't taste exactly as perfect as my last two visits. I'd still rate it superior to pulled pork at many other BBQ restaurants. It was a busy Thursday night (open mic night) and the room was well staffed. When I picked up my order, I counted 4 friendly faces behind the counter, ready to help. I questioned the server and all she could say was well it is a 16 oz cup... really for barcardi and diet you charge 15 bucks.... I placed an order online for a pizza on my way home. I got there early and was told another 30 min. (I overheard in the background it would be longer.) So I went home and came back. That took 30 min to do. I didn't get my pizza for another 40 min. Why? The unfriendly staff kept saying the pizza was ready, then it wasn't. It turned out it was in the warmer. Apparently the warmer was outside - a fact NO ONE any of the times we called let us know. My husband had to go inside and make a fuss before someone showed him where it was. Unprofessional and incredibly annoying. Would have immediately asked for a refund if I had ordered it differently. Rude. read more
