Knob Creek

Guinness-braised beef and vegetables served in a cast-iron skillet, and it is topped with a puff pastry that is baked until golden brown. Parking lot is full and I had a fella gank my spot at the last second. Guess I should have rode my horse. Place is packed and locals look at you like you are from another planet. They are constantly out of beer they have listed. No Murder Hill and I wanted that beer In particular after hearing good things about it from a relative of the head brewer. Guinness beef stew where is the beef?

Chowder

Popped over here on a work trip and ate at the bar. The staff seemed a little flustered as there was a larger than expected holiday party that they weren't prepared for. Service was a little slow but not unbearable. The restaurant was decorated nicely for the holidays and not overdone. You could tell that this was a local place for some folks and a place to come for out of towners as well. The chowder was tasty but nothing amazing. Warmed me up which is really all I wanted. The meatball sub was also pretty tasty, not the best I've ever had but definitely not the worst. The truffle fries were the highlight and I definitely recommend upgrading to those - worth the extra buck or two. Horseshoe Pub was nice and you won't be disappointed, but you also won't be blown away.

The Whoopie pie was huge and easily fed 5 of us.

We almost passed on going here because of the Yelp rating but someone recommended it so we tried it out. Glad we did! We had 5 in our party and our waitress was absolutely wonderful. We all had different sandwiches and they were delicious. It was a busy Saturday night but the booths have high dividers that fit 6 comfortably and blocked a lot of outside noise. I live on the east coast but would come back to the Horseshoe if I'm ever back in this area. If you are looking for good drink and pub food this is the place to go.

Fluffer Clucker

Hudson is definitely an underrated town for restaurants. We stopped in here and it has a nice large bar area that had an acoustic guitar singer. The bar area was separate from the dining area so it allowed you to enjoy a quiet dinner if that is what you are looking for. The restaurant area had some nice large booths for bigger parties and some small intimate ones as well. The beer list was huge and offered something for everyone. They also had some cool cocktails to choose from. The menu was large enough that anyone could find something. The waitress was very nice and checked in frequently. Wife is on keto and they were very accommodating. She had the big bird and loved it. I tried the Fluffer Clucker. A fried chicken sandwich with peanut butter and fluff. Weird sounding but it worked.

Bourbon Glazed Sirloin Tips*

Horse Shoe Pub is the legit definition of a pub. Flaunting nearly 80 beers on tap, there's literally something for every beer connoisseur's preference. Sloop Brewing's Juice Bomb moved near the top of my hazy IPA list. Brewed in New York, this citrus forward flavor ending with a touch of bitterness is just what the doctor ordered. The perfect food pairing had to be the bourbon glazed sirloin tips. Cooked medium, as requested, and served with a bed of mashed potatoes and green beans made this meal highly enjoyable. Not only did this sweet bourbon glaze bring out all the richness from the sirloin, it was a perfect addition taking the silky mashed potatoes to another level. Arriving thirsty and hungry, leaving fully satisfied.. couldn't ask for more.

We really wanted to eat outside over the weekend. Even though it was cool and possibly going to rain, they accommodated us. The outdoor heaters were on, and the umbrellas were up. Our server couldn't have been nicer, even though she had to go outside to our table. I got a Caesar salad in a Parmesan shell. It was so cool and yummy. My husband said his burger was good, not great. They had a large selection of fun beers that others at my table enjoyed.

Wiener schnitzel

We have been coming to the Horseshoe Pub for over 15 years. Unfortunately, it has gone down hill over the years. We gave Oktoberfest another try after being disappointed a couple of years ago. We sat at the bar and the bartender was awesome. It was busy but she was attentive to us and very calm. Very good experience. The number of Oktoberfest beers was fewer than we remember but we found one we liked. The real issue for the HP is the food. I had the Jager schnitzel (pork) and it was very, very over fried. There was a gooey, tasteless, brown gravy smeared on top. I was looking forward to the red cabbage and unfortunately found that they now put a very small amount on your plate and then spread it around to make you think it is a healthy portion. It's just like a kid spreading food around their plate to make it look like they ate a lot. Same situation for the spatzle, small amount but have to say that was not a big deal to me as it was tasteless. My husband's Wiener schnitzel was much better but I still wouldn't order it again. We gave dessert a try, dry bread pudding. This needs something like whipped cream or ice cream if it is going to be so dry. Just sad for this place that used to be a real go to in Hudson.

The chicken pot pie is large, in a cast iron skillet, with a puff pastry crust.

Back for Seconds: A Review of Checkerboards Restaurant & Bar in Judson, MA…read moreThe Verdict: Round two, and I'm still here. That has to count for something, right? I returned to Checkerboards recently, mostly to confirm that the deliciousness of my first visit wasn't just a hunger-induced hallucination. I am happy to report that the pizza remains structurally sound and emotionally supportive. Here's the breakdown of the second outing: The Atmosphere: It has that classic "I'm here to eat 2,000 calories and I don't care who sees me" energy. It's cozy, it's bustling, and the checkered decor is still successfully keeping me from forgetting the name of the establishment. The Food: I dove into the pizza again because I'm a creature of habit and change scares me. The crust had that perfect "crunch-to-chew" ratio that scientists should really be studying more closely. It's the kind of pizza that makes you consider ordering a second one just to have as a pillow for the inevitable food coma. The Service: The staff is impressively fast. I'm convinced they have a psychic link with the kitchen. My drink arrived before I even fully realized I was thirsty, which is either great service or light sorcery. The "Second Visit" Realization: You know a place is good when you spend the entire car ride there debating if you should try something new, only to panic and order exactly what you had last time because the FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out... on that specific sauce) is too real. Final Thought: If you see me there a third time, don't be alarmed. Just pass the parmesan and mind your business. Rating: 5/5 Stars. I'll be back for round three once my treadmill forgives me.

It made me feel normal being able to choose something from a full menu instead of trying to figure which of the 3 GF options I would wind up with. I appreciated that they had a designated server to deliver my gluten free dish to avoid any cross contamination. I would recommend this as a restaurant for those who are gluten sensitive to visit. I chose the Hot Honey Chicken which was a pickle brined, breaded, cajun seasoned fried chicken sandwich with a side of fries. The chicken was really big extending past the bun both ways showing a crispy fried exterior with a small puddle of the hot honey puddling on the plate. The first bite proved it wasn't false advertising, it was tender and juicy inside with a nice flavor of spice with a pleasing crunch from the breaded coating. I couldn't put the sandwich down, mostly because I didn't want to put my sandwich back in the puddle of honey which would have made my bun soggy but also because that chicken breast poking out at me was begging for another bite. My Boo noticed I was really into the sandwich because he said it was unusual that I wasn't devouring my fries while they were piping hot (I love hot fries). They were good too but that hot honey chicken - yum! My Boo had, from the regular, not gluten free menu, the clam chowder soup and shrimp poke bowl. He enjoyed them both and they both look very appetizing but I only had eyes for my hot honey chicken. Sorry I didn't take a picture of the food but it came out very pleasing to the eyes. The only thing I thought the restaurant could improve on is the attire of their workers. First impressions matter and though the hostess was pleasant she should have given more attention to her attire and appearance. Also, our waittress didn't offer to refill our water. Other than that we enjoyed it. When we travel back through here, I'm coming again.

Everything from the seats, tables, floor, all the way to the ceiling is grimy and dirty. Ceiling tiles missing as well. Just makes me wonder how dirty the kitchen is too. Hopefully not as disgusting as the bathrooms. The waiter literally just asked us if we used the side plates with our app and when we said no, he put them back in the stack he pulled them from. Awful. Food itself wasn't good either. Never again will we come here. Good luck if you do.
