I can honestly say that SLASH is the best damn jean store I've ever been to. I live in L.A. and make special trips to the bay area just to visit SLASH. No joke! No L.A. store's jean selection can even compare. The owner and her staff are always really helpful and can advise you on the best jean for YOU. No B.S.! They know their denim! I can't say enough about Slash. It's fucking amazing! I guess I never knew what it felt like to wear a hot pair of jeans, and would never know if it weren't for the help of Julie who stood outside my dressing room to see every pair that I tried on. It took about 10 minutes to find perfect jeans--tried on 3-4 pairs the store geniuses pulled for me, all were good, the last pair perfection! The jeans only cost about $75 plus hemming for $8. Definitely coming back! Btw, don't be shy about asking for exactly what you want (e.g. jeans that make fat legs look less like sausages and butts booty-licious?). I'm completely mixed but leaning toward a more positive side for this review. I came in looking for a new pair of Levis but they only carried Junior sizes which is a big no no for me ( I got HIPS) along with that, I was looking for a dark wash, straight leg and medium rise fit. I told the woman my size and she started pulling things from the shelves promptly and waiting anxiously outside the fitting room asking how do they fit? how do they fit? fit? fit? fit?! give me a minute! After trying on a few I found a pair that seemed ok but I was debating if I needed a size smaller. "oh yes, always go smaller. The rule is, if they button then they fit" she said. Ummmm NO! haven't you herd of muffin tops!? I felt that I could not trust a woman who didn't understand that a fit needed to be seamless not a sausage stuffer. However, I ended up buying a the smaller pair of dark wash, boot leg, medium rise jeans. And after talking with the man that works their, he stated that I should only wash them like once a month, which will be another rule that I will not be applying to my denim care. However; although the denim rules may be alittle out there, the sales associates are still nice and want to find you a jean, whether it be for the commission or just to help you improve your jean collection. Slash does have a good selection of denim but I may be skiping a stop here next time and hitting up the Gap. read more

I can't say enough good things about this place. They have the best selection of worn-in Levis in the East Bay, Amer. Apparrel stuff for cheap, great t-shirts, and an awesome selection of Dickies. The owner and her couple of sales girls are super helpful and think nothing of spending 40 minutes with you finding just the right pair of jeans or just the right shirt. holy denim fairy godmother!! the salesgirls here are amazing. you just tell them what you're looking for... they can eye you up and pull a few pairs that work for your figure. (they seem to know the brands/styles extremely well - and could pick the right size for me whether the line ran big/small/normal). seriously- every pair i tried on was the right size. Left with a pair that were exactly what i wanted and fit better than any pair i've ever owned. yes, the jeans were pricier than pairs i've bought elsewhere. but they fit perfectly and are great quality - they will be a staple in my closet. so much easier than buying jeans at the mall....the right size/style just arrives at your dressing room doors! these girls had me out in 15 minutes. read more

I walked in the door and the salesperson took one look at me, dug through a pile of jeans and pulled out a pair of levis that fit me like a glove. I usually have to try on hundreds of pairs! It's hard to find a good pair of jeans in Berkeley. I typically head off to the city, scouring the boutiques and department stores for that perfect pair of jeans that fit my far from perfect torso. And the trip is always painful to my pocketbook: add the cost of the jeans (at least $100), CA state sales tax, round-trip Bart fare to the city, and a $16 hem job (because I'm short) and you've got one very expensive pair of denim pants! So I was pleasantly surprised to find a great pair of relatively affordable jeans at Slash today. I've walked by this place for years and never paid any attention, thinking that it catered mostly to skinny emo or urban hipster types. But while the shop does cater to this clientele, I also found something that I -- a curvy size 6 on a good day -- can wear to a nice bar or casual dinner in the city. More important, even though I didn't recognize the brand, I bought the jeans right away because the quality (the material and the cut) was very good for the price ($85 incl. tax). I'm pretty certain that they'll wear as well as long as my over-priced denim! An update will follow if they don't! read more

everyone loves slash. the best thing about it is the personal consultation you get from the employees. these people know about jeans. the owner can take one look at you and tell you your size. she will also tell you how much each pair will shrink and how to wash and tug on them to get them the right shape and fade. her best advice has been to "do as little as possible" (advice which i apply to many other areas of my life, in fact). you shouldn't wash your jeans too much. she also once told me to feel free to dry my hands on them and dirty them up a bit. apparently dirt and oil are important for a good fade. the new store carries designer brands and more shirts, but i like the classic tees and tanks in the little basement store -- ribbed thermals and stripes. this place is tremendous. read more

I love the downstairs part of Slash Jeans. They have an incredible selection and great prices and the people working there really know their inventory. They also know EXACTLY what's going to look good on you. Trust me - TRUST THEM. Every single time I've gone in there the customer service has been helpful, generous and genuine. They always find me the perfect pair of jeans that look great on me, although my body is way less than perfect. They are also really nice to my son who tends to knock stuff over all over the place. I lived in Berkeley for four years, moved to Portland, and DO NOT--I repeat, DO NOT--buy jeans anywhere else. My favorite pair is torn to shreds, but I just have never, ever bought any jeans as well-fitting and flattering as the ones I've bought at Slash. Lucky Jeans are just a pale imitation to those vintage Levi's downstairs. We're visiting in October, and what's one of the first things I'm going to do (after going to Bi-Rite)? VISIT SLASH. My friend and I walked into the lower level of the store with the vintage denim and were asked if we wanted any help. We said we were just looking around and the woman just said let me know if you need some help. We assumed that was allowing us to just browse the selection, because there was no clear indication that the employees are the ones who are supposed to select things for you. I understand if that is their business model but it would have been better if they were more straightforward (even verbally) about that policy- please just tell customers that the way it works is you pick out the denim for them rather than just letting them do the wrong thing and guilt tripping them after. We didn't even touch a pile but one right next to the pile where we were looking at some pairs fell over. Both my friend and I work in retail so we understand how annoying it is when customers knock a pile over, so we tried to help and refold; instead we were met with a passive aggressive "you know what I just organized those but it's fine just leave it just leave it". As someone who deals with customers doing things like that often, I know it's never okay to make them feel guilty for accidentally knocking things over or messing up piles. The sales associate just made everything feel really hostile and we started to feel unwelcome in the store. I was afraid to say no to her suggestions or leave without buying anything. The best way to have dealt with the situation would have been to say "it's okay, don't worry about it" and follow by clarifying how the shopping process works in a friendlier tone rather than, again, guilt tripping the customer. At that point her hostility made us feel obligated to buy something even if it wasn't 100% what we came looking for. I am willing to give slash a second chance, however judging from other reviews it looks like this is a pretty common occurrence and I'm hoping their employees see that there is definitely some room for change in the way that they treat customers. read more

Everytime I stop in I fall in love all over. The newer addition has the cutest earrings. I bough a pair for my best friend and she wears them all the time! The original Slash (around the corner) has the best t shirts---soft, wearable, and not over-the-top gaudy. The ladies who work in the jean dungeon are so amazingly knowledgeable. They have every kind of Levi's you can imagine! This place is great for my boyfriend who is going through a black t-shirt and jeans phase and he refuses to buy jeans from anywhere else.
