That was, until I stopped into Maple Street. The owner and staff are INCREDIBLY knowledgeable about their stock and how to solve common problems about fit that femme bodies run into with jeans. I've never shopped at such an uplifting, body-positive space before-- the attitude the entire time they helped me find my perfect pair was never that my body was the problem, the jeans just weren't the right cut for what I wanted! Signs everywhere about "don't try on if you're just going to buy elsewhere!", which seems crazy to me, as shopping around is part of life... It's imperative that if you're a small business owner, you should be aware on how you treat your customers. When my husband and I walked in, I was hit with a judgmental look from the owner. It wasn't welcoming at all but people just have intimidating faces so I didn't think much of it. We came there all the way from Napa because we were looking for some raw denim for me that would suit my style. I've always wanted raw denim to match my husband but as I was trying more and more different styles, I commented how I didn't like most of them because I'm so skinny but I was not negating the fact I didn't want raw denim still. The owner made a comment to my husband as if he was my handler making me wear things I don't want to wear. We both looked at each other shocked. It was a nice gesture that she was trying to "help me decide for myself", but that was rude towards my husband and if I don't like something, trust me I'm not gonna get it. Later on, I saw some corduroys and I tried them on. I swore I saw these from macys at 50% off. So when I was in on my phone looking it up to see if it were the same ones, the owner interrupted me saying it's rude to look up other stores and I rather you buy them here. Again I was shocked that she thought that was my intention, I was only seeing if it were the same ones. And if it were, I would've bought it from her to support her small business. But she made it so awkward that looking around in the store made it seem like a crime because she might think I'll look it up some place else, so I went to my husband who was trying on jeans in the dressing room. Later then, my husband came out and didn't like any of the jeans(he's literally picky, I don't even buy clothes for him). We go to the checkout and my husband asks what the jeans that they didn't have my size in were called then the owner starts rambling on how we disrespected her on trying on their merchandise and not then buy anything. My husband was furious because we were going to buy the two pair of jeans for me. This is why customer service is so important. Leave your attitude and pride at home and deal with the rubbish that comes with retail. I loved the workers that work for the owner, but the owner herself, Julie...she needs to stop, think, and reflect. You could've made a sale. read more

I came here to buy a friend's son some jeans. We left with two pairs for me, two pairs for him, as well as a belt and a shirt for him. The proprietor of the store knows her jeans very well and I appreciate that. I asked her for some suggestions on how to move away from skinny jeans so as not to telegraph my advanced age to everyone in the world and she recommended the Wedgie fit from Levi's. I got two pairs and I love them. She also suggested I go a size down reminding me that jeans do stretch and that was a good suggestion. Any time anyone tells me that they want to buy jeans I recommend that they come to Maple Street Denim. Do not shop here! I'm all for supporting small businesses but the owner does not care about customers at all! Extremely rude! My wife found a pair of corduroys that she really liked and was looking online to see what other colors there were(this store only had two colors) and the owner gave her an attitude saying she was being rude by looking online. There was another style of jeans that my wife liked but they didn't have her size.So when I was getting ready to pay I asked what style those other pants were and she said, " I don't want to tell you because you're not planning on buying anything here". I drove all the way from Napa just to buy some Jeans here. Please do not support this lady. The other workers were very kind and cool but the owner was not. I never leave reviews but I feel lead to let people know. This is the only small business I ever went to where I wish it to fail. After I left I looked online to see the pants she wanted and now I see why she didn't want my wife to look online. I originally started buying jeans as gifts for my wife and quickly discovered what a good pair of well-fitting jeans was all about and haven't looked back since. Great selection and beautiful shop. The employees and owner do not give off a welcoming vibe. I felt uncomfortable and pressured to purchase. I understand that as a small business they feel the pressure of the pandemic and online retailers, but adding passive-agressive signs in their dressing rooms and not being polite when customers want to learn more about denim and the clothes they are investing is not excusable. If you check out the About page on their website as well, that can tell you a lot about their confrontational ethos. I may reluctantly go there again because there is no better substitution for trying things on in person and some of this denim is difficult to find in the bay. I hope that the shop will learn to approach their relationships with customers in good faith rather than bad faith to make everyone feel welcome rather than pressured. I unfortunately think that the employees and owner will read this review and tell me, "if you don't like it, then shop somewhere else". Visiting the area and got invited for an impromptu dinner with an old friend of my husband's. I only packed athleisure wear and wanted to look a bit more put together. I checked Yelp for local Women's clothing stores in the area with hopes of finding a nice pair of jeans. Unfortunately many of the local shops were closed on Sunday but checked out a couple local places with no luck finding my size. Then I found this shop on Yelp and decided to check it out. Upon entering they appeared to have a good selection of styles, colors and sizes despite not being an overly large store. The woman working there (maybe owner?) told me where Women's jeans were and recommended a size based on her observation of me. There were many more styles & colors behind the counter which she offered to help me pick a pair after asking my style preferences. I usually like to shop without assistance, but didn't know my size. I am used to buying traditional Women's sizes (2,4,etc). These jeans were all sized by waist size and length. I told her I was concerned about length as I am barely over 5'3". She handed me about five styles & washes to try on. All fit, but I landed on a really flattering dark denim pair of Nudie Jeans W29 L28 Hightop Tilde in Blue Fantasy made of organic cotton. Upon checking out she notified me that if I ever get a hole in them they offer free repairs forever! She also gave me advice on cleaning instructions. I decided to write this review because I never get help from people when shopping, but this store had very knowledgeable workers and I likely wouldn't have bought anything without her help. Price was more than I expected to pay, but they look so nice on me that I think it was worth it. We all know how a well fitting pair of jeans can make us feel! A customer walked in without a mask on and she reminded him of the mandate and asked him to please get & put on a mask before coming in. As a person with asthma I greatly appreciate stores like this as it made me feel safe. I've been looking into selvedge and raw denim for a little while. I'm very large and don't trust ordering clothes online. I wasn't surprised that this store didn't have my size in stock but very happy that Julie, the owner, was able to order it. She took down my phone number and kept me updated via text thru the whole process. The helped me pick the perfect jeans, explained the differences in fit very thoroughly, and updated me as soon as they arrived. I just picked up my first pair of selvedge jeans this afternoon and no surprise here, but they fit perfectly. Maple street denim is a solid 45 minute drive for me, but I happy to make the trip because of the fantastic customer service. A jean bar you say? Yes! They also sell a bit more like leggings, hats, socks type deal, but it's all about the denim here. Many different high end varieties that range anywhere from $100-$200. Julie, the owner and jeantender (wow, I'm going hard on this) will give you the truth if asked on what is up and actually undersold me. I was going for a more expensive jean and she told me to choose the other, less expensive one. Why, thank you! A few sale items and returns are actually for store credit only, which definitely makes me a more apprehensive consumer. However, Julie stands behind her products and she chooses only the best at this well curated boutique. I heard more gossip between the owner and her friend than I did about any pants (yikes). I didn't feel like it would be a good idea to interrupt so I did a sweep for the jeans I was looking for and then left. It felt like, sure, it was open- but only for certain people and everyone else shouldn't bother. If they're going for an elitist, gentrified feel, they've nailed it. I highly recommend that you greatly consider the owner and her incredibly rude behavior before ever spending your money here. We have a vintage Pendleton and Levi business and walked in wearing such. Prime customer. We were ready to spend some serious money. The owner was not only uninviting, but aggressive, dismissive, and continued to ignore us when we kindly and bashfully asked questions. $120 starting price for shirts and jeans. You gotta really really like them, and I didn't really really like them. The styles are nice enough, but the selection is quite limited, and the Canadian made shirts were a bit too heavy for California. I understand why US/Canadian made products are this price, but it was a little much for me. I certainly don't object to paying up for quality clothing, and I definitely don't want cheap clothing. The 2 staff were friendly enough, but in the end I felt they were being a bit pushy, just a bit too keen to sell me jeans, so it wasn't real comfortable for me. Also, many of the jeans have leather patches, so not vegan, so I won't be buying those. Best denim shop in Oakland!! I just bought a pair of Nudie jeans yesterday and I'm in love. I'm looking forward to coming in to buy a few more pairs. I even have a bit of a belly which I'm self conscious about and was able to find a pair I liked enough to buy. I will say, I wish they had more in the way of mid-rise and zip fly jeans (I know terribly un-trendy, but it usually looks better on me because of the belly). But I appreciated the shop assistant helping me so much and having sold vintage denim for some time, I am a denim snob and they knew their shit! I found a pair of high rise, button fly, 90's style, standing-only denim that I am excited to break in. They're the kind of pants that will only get better with age. I got lucky and found a worn out pair of wranglers the same day down the street at Mercy that are probably going to be a new pair of period denim (if you know, you know...straight up slacker style and nothing squeezing your middle) - but that was a stroke up luck. I just noticed that much to my dismay I made a review when Julie worked at Slash Denim a Bajillion years ago around the time that I fell off my dinosaur and broke my wooden underwear, but somehow I have failed in all this time to leave a appropriate a review for Maple Street denim., the store that Julie opened on her own after she splintered away from slash and went on her quest for world domination of denim. Julie is the absolute unfuckwithable (as well as gorgeous, and hilarious) top-tier master of jeans , honestly, I don't even wear pants mind. Gutter. Out. honestly I don't even wear pants, (mind . gutter, out) and this woman has gotten me into more pairs of jeans than I can shake a stick at... She really knows her stuff. She goes out of her way to find cool brands that you don't see all over the place and on everybody that walks by you at a bar or on the street. She's very kind, very open and friendly and extremely helpful, however, beware that does not mean that she suffers fools in any way, shape or form. So don't be surprised if she treats you like the total asshole that you are, if you walk into her store prattling on and on like a rude imbecile on your cell phone. There is even a sign at the door, kindly, informing all of you born in a barn cave people of a fact you should already be well aware of l, which that it is incredibly rude to talk to someone on a cell phone when you're being helped by a live human person in the flash especially when the store is a small space that is confined and puts you in close proximity to the people who work there as well as other customers. and yet entitled shitheads still manage to find a way to be the entitled shitheads that they are, and pitch fits and leave crappy yelp reviews about it, which in my opinion is an extreme abuse of really whack, impotent power that people love to cling to because they got bullied in high school, and have some kind of weird chip on the shoulders. Great jeans are important!!!! Maple Street Denim is my go-to for high quality jeans because the staff is amazing. Eden and Mahogany go above and beyond. They are denim nerds and that is exactly what you need when shopping for the perfect fit/feel. It's rare to find a boutique that has a such a well-curated selection. I've been going to Maple Street for over five years. I buy one-four pairs of jeans per year from the store. If you cycle, that's a good way to break in stiffer denim -- but I don't recommend cycling in $200 jeans on a regular basis because the crotch will rip after a few months. It's important to invest in jeans that work for your body and gender. It's not cheap at Maple Street -- but they have sales! Semi-annually! With serious markdowns! Also, they carry the best styles of Levi's, which are more affordable than the other brands they carry. I don't always find what I need -- sometimes sizes and styles are limited. But Eden and Mahogany are happy to help you find what is right for you. Julie, the owner, is a total pro as well. Eden has even texted me to let me know when certain style I wanted came in. My 3 year old AllSaints denim needed to be retired, but didn't want to purchase from them anymore due to change in quality and fit. Did some research on denim and came across Naked and Famous, Nudies, APC, and a few others. Through a shit ton of reddit threads and photos/videos, I came to conclusion of buying a pair of some Naked and Famous Skinny Guys. Found some online, but was super wary of blindly ordering [primarily because of the inseam length] even if the site offered free alteration.. Did some more research and found out that Maple Street Denim carried all three brands I was looking at so I stopped by. I didn't even need to do any of all that damn research. I walked in and the woman working pretty much sized me up and threw out some suggestions of brands/sizes/styles that I try out. She was super helpful with input and you could tell that she wasn't just trying to make a sale out of it, but took pride in choosing the right denim for your body type and style. Long story short, I ended up with some Naked and Famous Skinny Guys AND got them altered for free with the purchase. Came back several days later to pick them up and they fit perfectly!
