One of the best vision centers in Houston. They take great care of their clients and they really want what's best for you as a patient. I was originally referred here for LASIK several years ago. Everything went well, and they even got me signed up to participate in a contrast sensitivity study to help offset some of the cost of the surgery. I currently go there still for regular check ups with my optometrist. She's stellar and does a great job of keeping up with clients even though she only sees them once every 6 or 12 months. The front desk staff are pretty good but can be frustrating at times. I frequently get appointments that get canceled and rescheduled after they were booked, or they'll occasionally reassign you to a different doctor rather than your regular one without even telling you. read more

As visionary author Arthur C. Clarke wrote in 1962, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." I have experienced magic this month. I'm 66, and have worn glasses or contact lenses since I was nine. I've been blessed with good eye health, but have followed the typical path to bifocals. This month my ophthalmologic surgeon simultaneously cured my mild-to-moderate cataracts and installed a pair of high-tech trifocal lenses where the blurry flesh & blood lenses had been. There was no pain; the procedures on each eye, a week apart, took about 15 minutes, plus a half-hour prep and follow-up. The results were startling even on the day of surgery, and the recovery startlingly quick. The corrective lenses weren't covered by Medicare (which did cover the cataract surgery, however, and would've covered plain replacement lenses). But I recommend the upgrade expense for those who can bear it, because: I now enjoy, by far, the best vision of my life. Every aspect of my vision was improved: I can read small print, I can see far distances, I have good night vision without glare, and my improved peripheral vision is helping with some balance issues. I'm a safer driver at reduced fall risk -- what a pleasant surprise! The most difficult part has been suppressing the conviction that surely I must need to go take out my contact lenses, after wearing them continuously for, umm, it seems like about a month now. Except I haven't been: I threw my contact lenses, and my glasses, away a month ago. (Well, actually I'll donate the glasses for re-use, but they're in a drawer until then.) I could not be happier with my new vision. After wearing glasses/contacts for most of my life, getting LASIK eye surgery has been life changing. Thank you to Dr. Walton and the Slade & Baker team for all they do. I came to Slade & Baker because they were the best. There was truly no one else more capable than their team. They have made the entire process very painless and as comfortable as can be. On the day of the surgery, you will most likely be there for 3-4 hours. However, everything went by pretty fast considering you have to meet with different people as they discuss post-care, go through testings, prep your eyes for surgery, and meet with the doctors. Every person I have met during the process has been very kind and knowledgeable. On the other hand, Dr. Walton is very meticulous about his work and very thoughtful toward his patient. I was not nervous at all going into the procedure because I knew I was in good hands. The procedure itself was less than five minutes. There wasn't any significant pain, only some pressure from the eye clamps. Instantly I could see clearly with a bit of haziness. However, after I took a nap that afternoon, the haziness cleared up. It has been a few weeks since the procedure and I have been very lucky to not have dry eye or any sort of discomfort. My LASIK procedure and recovery could not have gone any better. I saw Dr. Alexandra Lovoy primarily to treat my dry eyes so that I could wear soft contact lens. After prescribing me Xiidra, then $650 PRP drops, she said my only option was scleral lens (roughly $3,000). Given the cost, she confirmed with her office that half of the fitting fee would be refunded. It turns out Dr. Lovoy flat out lied to me regarding this refund. After 9 visits over 4 months, the scleral lens still did not fit properly. Her office brings this fact up as if to make a point that I was a difficult patient, but instead the takeaway should be that Dr. Lovoy is incompetent. Each lens did not fit correctly or provide me proper vision as substantiated by the vision test and equipment. This is an objective measurement. I cannot "fake" improper fitting lens or inferior vision (restricted blood vessels, blurry vision, etc.). Dr. Lovoy's approach was doomed to fail from the beginning. She attempted to alter both the physical lens fitting and the prescription concurrently. However, each time the lens is physically altered, the shape of the lens is altered, which naturally affects the prescription. Unsurprising, the power was never accurate because physical alterations were constantly being made. A proper fit and prescription was a constantly moving target and Dr. Lovoy was just guessing. After I lost confidence in Dr. Lovoy's ability after so many failed attempts, I researched and the best practice for scleral lens is to first confirm fit and then add in the prescription as the last step. By ensuring the fit is correct before incorporating the prescription, it reduces the likelihood of needing multiple lens orders, which can be both time-consuming and costly. Dr. Lovoy's decision to try to complete both at the same time resulted in unnecessary time and expense, for which her office blames me and not her own incompetence. I began seeing an ophthalmologist and was prescribed Tyrvaya which has already addressed my dry eyes. This was not even considered/offered/suggested by Dr. Lovoy. read more

Terrible place for cataract remover. Like being at a used car dealer. Everything was extra if you wanted cutting with non scaple or what medicare would approve. Never told this before 4 hours if test and then prices of there cataract recovering premium service. It is over 10 thousand dollars. But wait there is more. Add on if you want to see. Mid range service 8 thousand. But wait there is more. Medicare paid only with scaple and no vision correction. You'll need glasses forever they said. Add one after another add ons. Even follow up visits. 4 hours of test you pay for and then the hight prices are quoted. Stay away and save yourself the time and money. Be careful of your regular eye clinic referrals..they get a kick back that you are paying for. . Hard lesson to learn because now I have to start over. read more

Very disappointed in the entire process. BEWARE... if you decide to have surgery on BOTH eyes on the same day, they will charge you a $1000 convenience fee. WHY? Coming back another day doesn't change anything? They are NOT upfront about the charges. They NEVER told us or provided us ANY documentation stating that there was a $1000 convenience fee, or we never would have done both on the same day. Also, they cannot provide a receipt on the date of surgery. How is that? They know what they are going to do. They charge you up front, but they can't provide a receipt? What kind of medical practice is this? While waiting, notice that they "sneaker-net" files between the DR office and the surgery center. This is 2023 and their lack of use of modern technology for their patients is obvious. Do not recommend them. Not only is their billing an issue, but we ended up having to come a second time any way as the lens was not centered. For amount we paid, would have expected better service and standards. read more

I had my PRK surgery about a month ago, and I can say from the bottom of my heart it has been the best gift I have ever received. I drove in from Louisiana to have corneal cross-linking done at Slade and Baker. From the first phone call until the moment that I left, I could not have been more pleased. The staff was incredibly accommodating, knowledgeable and friendly; the facility was clean; all of the equipment was brand new. I saw both Dr. Baker and Dr. Slade before having my procedure. Dr. Baker was so kind and gentle and very thorough. Dr. Slade, less so; he was all business, which is ok with me. I was an emergency room nurse for 10 years, and those of you that complain about bedside manner, just don't really get it. I will take the best surgeon with the worst bedside manner any day over someone who is sweet that has no idea what they're doing. First off all, I did not find Slade and Baker Vision because of an advertisement or promotion they were running. I found and selected them because of their expertise and research. I am a keratoconus patient. I arrived at Slade and Baker after having received my diagnosis from Army doctors at a military entrance process station (MEPS) and a resulting two-year disqualification. Needless to say, I was frustrated at my two former optometrists who failed to diagnose me with this degenerative disease and bitter at my inability to serve. But I am so grateful I found Slade and Baker Vision. Dr. Slade convinced me (and took his time doing it) that epi-on CXL (corneal crosslinking) was the best for my keratoconus and he oversaw the procedure. Then I was fitted with a scleral lens by Dr. Essa and I'll never forget what it was like to process vision from my right eye again. I simply received the BEST possible healthcare and patient experience I have ever had, from any doctor, from Dr. Slade and Dr. Essa. this review is NOT for the doctor. I like Doctor W. The staff was condescending to all patients, including myself. The staff were "put-off" and bothered with everything. I watched an elderly man wait over 1 hour for an appointment...I was next! after 45 minutes-when I inquired how much longer my wait time would be ( they were already almost an hour lat) I was treated with disdain and rudeness..! Why do doctor's offices allow this behavior? My time is valuable! I do not understand why the medical community believes the patient (the Client!!!!) should be treated horribly and pay for it! My husband is disabled and has severe fast-growing cataracts. He needs surgery and this was the office where our eye doctor sent us. I asked if they were on our insurance and they said they were in-network. My husband and I drove 1.5 hours, he had 3 hours of tests, and then we met with one of their "counselors" (which felt like a finance person at a car dealership) who told us that though the Doctor is on our insurance, THEIR SURGERY FACILITY IS NOT. So we are looking at thousands and thousands of dollars out of pocket to even get the basic cataract surgery. We had to pay $160 for tests. Now we have to go someplace else and start the whole process over. Including all of the testing. Which is really hard for a disabled person. I also took a whole day off work for this and now I need to do that again too. They also wanted to charge us $25 for his records or wait weeks to get the records sent directly to another Doctor. This was awful. Not recommended one little bit. read more

I've been meaning to leave a review for awhile now. I know I left one on Facebook years ago. I had lasik performed by Slade & Baker back in 2009 and they are truly the best! It has been one of the greatest and most beneficial decisions I've made. For starters, they are one of the leading innovators of lasik vision in the country. Their pre and post-surgery care is incredible. They make sure to inform you very well of the procedure to make you feel as comfortable as possible. Their tests are of the highest standard and well, here I am 8 years later to prove it. S&B completely lives up to their expectations. Truly unsatisfied with the care and service and would never recommend Dr. Slade & Baker to anyone. Immediately after my LASIK pre op exam in November 2015 I came down with the worst case of pink eye imaginable. My vision has never seemed to be 100% right after this whole ordeal so I went to my regular eye doctor today. She informed me that the virus is still there so she prescribed me with a steroid/antibiotic with specific instructions on how to taper off the steroids to avoid the problems I have been dealing with for months. It was clear after a few minutes of conversation that Dr. Slade never really had my health in mind instead handed me a bottle of steroids and sent me on my way. If this isn't enough the customer service was less than impressive. Especially from the office manager who treated me like I had the plague as soon as I was diagnosed with pink eye. I went to see Dr Slade and Baker after doing research about corneal cross linking. I had about given up on ever being able to see even with corrected vision. The correction was 20/70. After the surgery, I have been able to be corrected to 20/25. All of the people at the front desk were so gracious and helpful. The assistant sat with me the whole time of the procedure. This is is the place to go for professional eye care. They have some of the best and most caring doctors in the world. I went to them to treat my keratoconus after going to many other doctors for years in different states who said they could treat my condition. This is the only place to go for treatment if you have keratoconus. The entire staff is compassionate and truly understand what you are going through and they have alternatives to this condition, other than simply giving you hard to wear contact lenses. I have NEVER written a bad comment before, but I had to since I expect more from medical professionals. This is a case of a Doctor's excellent surgical reputation is unable to compensate for poor service by one in his office, one could ruin it for all. LASIK surgery is a serious procedure that should never be taken lightly so I did what any educated buyer does, RESEARCH. I was set up a consult appointment with Dr. Slade's office after reading his credentials from a few reputable websites & speaking to his staff. It didn't matter that he was the most expensive since I would never compromise my health or comfort for money. So, I was sure I found the place to help me. After days of research on the types of medical devices used for lasik and weighing out what I'm comfortable with, I called about 9 clinics and set up consult appointments on my top 4, as most Lasik advice websites recommended. I came prepared with questions specific to each doctor's experiences & preferred method. In Dr. Slade's office, I sat in the waiting room feeling confident that I've found the clinic that would take all my eye troubles and confusing, extensive, migrating research would finally end, especially seeing all the books & awards that were displayed and also reading though the consent forms & how open they were about questions and wish to explain in a way for patients to fully understand and feel comfortable about the procedure, but the INTENTION DID NOT go very far. Other clinics were capable of staying professional and personable all at the same time. This staff was mediocre & certainly not personable but all that is forgivable, what floored me was how I was treated during my consult. Once I was told that I would be a good candidate for the procedure, he asked me if I had any questions. I asked what was on my mind and his answers were very vague, not specific or helpful to me at all. His facial expressions were more of annoyance rather than of concern to help and provide full disclosure to the procedure specific to my personal optical issues. At one point he even said, "For you to try and understand all the different type of lasers, would be beyond you." I was bit taken back for so many reasons, especially since I didn't care about other devices, just the ones that would be used on me. I began to feel uncomfortable and sensed his short answers as an indication that the conversation should end. At another point, he asked me if I've ever heard of the phrase," physicians make the worse patients?" I was floored. He initially asked if I had questions but didn't mean it when I actually had a few. It is one thing if the person in Dr. Slade's office was an uneducated staff member but it happened to be an MD whom I believe is also financially invested in the office. I would believe that he would want to establish a comfortable & trusting relationship with a patient, but from my experience it was not his priority and the comfort & trust was undermined. I came in expecting the best service from a "world renowned" facility but I guess the "best" left to the conference with the "world renowned" doctor but I wouldn't know because I never met Dr. Slade. read more

Was recommended Slade and Baker by my optometrist for my eye correction surgery. Did a quick pre-op check to make sure I was a candidate (which I was for PRK) and 2 weeks later I had my surgery! While the surgery itself was only about 15 mins, the total wait period was a good 4 hrs (which is why I took a satr off). Be prepared for the wait! Other than that, everyone was extremely helpful and courteus! The counselors explained the entire procedure for me and what to expect, the techs were great, and the surgical assitants were awesome. I don't think there was Yelp or any other type of review site back when I had Lasik surgery 17 years ago with Dr. Slade. Around 30+ years I began keeping track with my ophthalmologist in San Antonio, Dr. Frey, about the progress of eye surgery to correct astigmatism and my near blindness because of it. At the time he didn't encourage the procedure but then 20 years ago (10+ years later), he asked me when I was ready for it. So excited, I began looking into it. Shortly afterwards we moved to Houston and I learned that Houston's Dr. Slade was one of the foremost innovators of Lasik technology. So around 17 years ago I had Dr Slade perform the surgery. I was at the extreme end of viable candidates due to my extreme astigmatism and was cautioned it might not be 20/20 but I went for it. Wow!! They ended up touching up my dominant right eye and got it to 20/20. The vision on the left also was not perfect but they told me I could get it touched up or if I could live with it I would appreciate it years later. 17 years later, at age 58, I appreciate their wisdom. Everyone but me requires reading glasses at this point!! Now, They weren't able to cure my astigmatism so my vision has changed over the years. If I drive at night or want extreme clarity I do use glasses. But in general I do not require them, even 17 years later. I just thought I would share this for anyone wondering about the work they do and the long-term effects. A few years back I then took my dad to them to have work done on his cataracts. I would give them 10 stars if this would let me! Dr. Slade and Dr. Baker and the Staff at the Vision Center are Hero's! OK, I hope I don't get to mushy! I LOVE EVERYBODY at Slade & Baker! I had my LensX Cataract Surgery April 23rd Dr. Slade put in a Premium Toric lens to correct my Astigmatism (level 3) and my nearsightedness (-6) I cant lie, my mind was alittle uptight going into the day but the whole team at the vision center took care to make me feel good about the whole process. There was NO PAIN at all and it went by so quick once in the operating room. I never even felt the laser machine lock on to my eye and before I could even figure it out, Dr Slade said "OK we are done with that part". While being driven in to my 1 day checkup I could already see all the street signs very good, still alittle cloudy in the morning, by afternoon I was starting to see good, Then at 48 hours I was amazed. I could see crisp, clear, sharp objects. Let me explain, I had RK 24 years ago and had complications that caused my right eye to have a double vision and just much weaker than my left. I think I was a -2 left, and a -6 right. I was told that my right eye WOULD NEVER be able to be corrected because of RK. But I finally found Dr. Slade and Dr. Baker and I can not tell them enough how grateful and appreciative I am for them getting me back to perfect vision. The quality of my life will go up 1000% because of the team at Slade and Baker.
