Great little place that you would not expect in a strip mall off of 70! Food is always good! I love ordering the spinach salad with salmon! I have not been disappointed. What a find! This is a very un-assuming place in the middle of a strip mall but don't let the outward appearance fool you. The cafe itself is decorated very nicely and modern and lends to a more personal experience. Highly recommended for a date night or business meeting. However the decor is not the highlight of this place. The food is absolutely wonderful. There are some good restaurants in the area but they all pale in comparison to what this cafe brings. With a rotating menu for certain items and fresh home mode desserts, you'll be hard pressed to find anything similar in Clayton or Smithfield. I believe this is the only place to find food for foodies. I kind of hate using that word as it seems pretentious but I can not explain it any other way. The owner takes pride in the dishes that she serves and it really shows in the elegance and balance of the dishes. Please come in sometime and give them a shot. My friend and I went here today for a late lunch/early dinner. She had been there before but it was my first time. It was also my first time "dining in" since covid started. Picked a great spot for it. We sat outside in the fresh air. Our server was great. The food was really good. We had some of the breaded zucchini sticks- yummy. We both had the half Clayton club sandwich with salads. The sandwiches and the spinach salad were deiicious. But my favorite part... the chocolate chip and pecan bread pudding... OMG fantastic! What a great little restaurant. Another one if those places that have driven by many times but never stopped. Decided to give it a try tonight, at my wife's suggestion, and glad we did. The service was excellent and the food was outstanding. I had the bourbon glazed salmon and not only was it good but was cooked just the way I asked. My wife had the Seafood Penne that was also very good. While it is a little out of the way the extra drive was worth it. Was surprised to learn it had been there for 12 years. Definitely a locals favorite place to eat and was evident from the interaction between some of the customers and their server. Will definitely be returning. read more

The best meal I have had since moving to North Carolina! This is definitely a hidden gem with great prices! If this restaurant were in Durham, the meal would have been a least 3 times more. The pecan bourbon salmon was mouth watering, the summer squash and zucchini with onion was so flavorful that I could taste each vegetable. The slaw was delicious and had no sauce, just seasonings. We started with cauliflower bites which had heat but not over spicy. We will definitely be back! read more

We've always enjoyed Skylines. The service has been somewhat spotty but, they seem to have solved this recently with some new staff. The owner is very "hands-on" and can be found in the dining room most nights. They are located in a strip mall but, have done a good job on the interior. The have a nice patio to use when the weather improves. We dined there last night and thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Our waitress was pleasant and made some good recommendations. Meals were a little slow coming but not so bad as to be an issue. I had the Seafood Portofino (cajun style) and it was delicious. Shrimp, scallops and calamari with sautéed spinach in a san marzano marinara & parmigiano sauce tossed with linguini. The sauce had a great texture and just the right level of spice. The shrimp and scallops were plentiful, good sized and cooked nicely. One of the members of our party had the Sesame Encrusted Tuna special. She ordered it "medium rare but, more rare than medium." I'm not quite sure what that means but, the chef did. He got it exactly right! It was a huge portion and very nicely done. The dining scene in Clayton has improved over the last couple of years but, I think that Skylines is still your best option. read more

Love, love, love coming here! The food NEVER disappoints and the entire crew here is so warm and personable. Nicole is amazing at what she does and is great with recommendations. The owner, Tina takes the time to introduce herself and check on all her patrons. Really enjoy their chicken parmesan, chicken tacos, and classic cheeseburger. Tonight really topped the experience for my foodie spirit. Started off with the Lobster Ravioli as an appetizer (even though, it's the entree special tonight). In love with their Pecan Crusted Swai with their delicious tequila sauce. The risotto is cooked to perfection and their sauteed beans are nice and fresh. The grilled chicken is blackened so delightfully and the BBQ made the dish dressed to impress. Their natural cut fries are nice and crunchy on the outside with a soft, fluffy middle. Completed dinner with creme brulee and lemon cheese cake. Now if only I had a rewind button and tummy space to do it all over again. Can't wait for the next visit. read more

The food is fantastic! Clayton doesn't have much in the way of creative upscale dining, but this place picks up the slack. The calamari is the best I've ever had. Not overly breaded, topped with an amazing balsamic glaze that will make your eyes roll back. Love that stuff! The ahi tuna is fresh and perfect. Such a pleasant surprise Skylines was! We stopped by for lunch on a whim after reading some Yelp reviews- and they did not disappoint. We sat outside on the patio, ordered the artichoke dip which was awesome! I ordered a burger and hubby got the chicken Philly (on a pita with marinara sauce) and both were great. The burger had so much flavor but wasn't dripping in grease. While chatting with the server whom I believe is also the owner, we decided the try a mini creme brûlée - absolutely delicious! I've gone to Skylines since it changed hands years ago, so I've given it more than a few tries. My observations are as follows: 1) The food is generally good 2) The portions are generally small-modest (If you're 6'2" and 190 like I am, you'll likely be hungry after a typical entree. 3) The service is atrocious. My wife and I were there last night to give it ONE more try. Since I know the service is slow, I watched the clock. -5 min to get seated (even though it was half empty) -10 min to get food and drink order -10 more min to get drinks -30 more min to get food. -- 55 min from entry to eating. This is not abnormal. I watched the table next to me. It took them 20 min for someone to pick up their CC to pay the tab. It's always like this. It's a shame..Clayton need some good dining. Skylines is a nice place, with generally friendly staff, but their service is beyond slow. Always beyond slow. If you're not hungry and very patient, try Skylines. read more

I have included a link to a standard pesto recipe in this review, since the chef apparently does not know what pesto is: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/food-network-kitchens/basil-pesto-recipe2.html The pesto at Skylines Cafe (on the Seafood Pesto Primavera) was olive oil and lemon juice over penne with maybe a tablespoon of chopped basil and a pinch of parmesan. The taste of the lemon was so strong that I could not taste any basil. The olive oil had created a puddle at the bottom of my pasta bowl. It didn't taste bad, but when I order a pesto dish I want to taste basil and garlic, not lemon juice. It took 40 minutes from when we ordered until we received our food. The restaurant was not very busy--less than a quarter full (I counted 6 other tables that were there before us). When our food was finally ready I was given an entree from another table and the server had to return it to the kitchen and came back a couple minutes later with my "pesto" pasta. I had ordered a full order of the pasta ($19) but when it arrived it was in a very small bowl (maybe a 1 1/2 cup altogether) with two shrimp and two scallops. I asked if it was a full order and the server said she put in for a full order but they only gave her 1/2. She said she would put in a rush order for another 1/2 pasta. After taking a few bites I let her know that I would rather she just change the check since I didn't want any more of the pasta. My husband ordered a side of asparagus with his burger. The burger was good, but the "side of asparagus" was 4 stalks, one of which was too woody to be eaten. They were also out of the microbrew beer I had ordered off the menu and the server was unable to recommend any substitute. I wasn't familiar with the other microbrews on the menu, and the menu gave no descriptions of any of the beers so I stuck with water. We went through Wendy's drive-thru on the way home. read more

I really enjoy Skylines for lunch. I've been at Skyline numerous times with my husband's co-workers for "birthday" lunches along with our toddler son. On other visits, I've been with a friend along with our toddler sons. My friend wasn't originally overly thrilled with the service at Skyline but it has definitely improved. We now enjoy going to Skylines for lunch especially when we can sit outside when the weather is nice. Don't remember the name of the Grilled Chicken Sandwich I love but it is always so tasty! The homemade chips are wonderful but I wish it came with just a little bit more of the ranch dressing. I really enjoy the relaxing atmosphere and usually by the time I arrive it is after the lunch rush so we are able to take our time. The owner and staff have been great with the toddlers. Now, my husband isn't a huge fan but he isn't overly adventurous with food along with being very picky. I have been unable to get him to try dinner at Skylines. He does wish there were more vegetable options such as steamed broccoli without any other veggies mixed with them or any types of sauces (he hates butter). read more

Eating by myself today so there was literally no wait. Clean, great atmosphere. Wait staff was excellent, present and attentive without being intrusive. Food was very quick to come out and delicious. Skylines has reinvented itself a few times over the past few years. The food has always been good, with a growing and shrinking menu. I appreciate that they are always willing to accomidate someone with food allergies and create things I can eat. I have never had a bad meal, and often order wraps and salads there. They are freshly made with mixed greens and fresh veggies. I have also been to a few events, like wine tastings, etc. The outside seating is comfortable and pet friendly. (although there isn't much of a view). I really miss the Sunday brunch! read more
