A Cincinatti-area experience probably would not be complete without Skyline. It's fast food, yes, but with table service. We had a large group, but we were able to order quickly, and food was out unimaginably fast. And our waitstaff was sooooo nice. Skyline is a chili restaurant, but it's more about what you pair with your chili: spaghetti, potatoes, mac 'n cheese, etc. And universally with cheese, lots and lots and lots of cheese. I thought it was all kind of weird. But that was before I tried the food. I really enjoyed my chicken chili potato. My girlfriend loved her mac 'n cheese with vegetarian chili. My sister got the same, but with the carnivore chili. My other sister got the burrito with chili. I really didn't have high hopes for Skyline, but ended up pleasantly surprised. I know I'm likely in the opposition here as everyone seems to raves about Skyline and there is always a crowd, but I have yet (and probably won't ever) be impressed. These dogs are ok - and you can't beat the price (unless you go to Costco), but it's just a cheap hot dog, with some low grade chili smothered in fresh shredded cheese. i've never had a bad meal here. They do 3-way Chili the "right way", but you can adjust to your tastes. Extra juicy, less pasta, and you can vary the taste to your preference. The chicken chili did take a few meals to get used to, but it's really great on a coney or baked potato with cheese. The wait staff is friendly and competent, can't ask for better service. Stopped in because a friend suggested it as part of the Cincinnati experience. Speedy service (like Super fast) and classic diner atmosphere. Offspring got a basic hot dog (or "coney") and I had a small serving of the chili four ways (spaghetti, chili, a mound of cheese and diced onion). The chili has a unique flavor profile - maybe some cinnamon and nutmeg? - but the whole thing was very tasty (and the portion size was perfect for a first time experience). We'll probably be back for the SO to try it next time through! read more

I have found that the quality of the delivered product varies by location quite a lot. I'm still trying to figure out where the chili on my burrito and 5-way went at the Fairfax location. I seem doomed to get mountains of cheese, but very little chili. Perhaps they are running low? read more

Great Skyline location. It is easy to get in and out of. It offers a drive thru and even if there is a decent line, they are very efficient. The staff at the window are always very friendly. This is one of the few locations that ACTUALLY includes everything in my bag for my 5 way with habanero cheese. Usually someone forgets the onions or gives me regular cheese, or omits the crackers. Smallest portion sizes of ANY Skyline location I have ever been to! Asked for heavy chili and onion and got neither. Must have been a very tiny handful of cheese on top, came nowhere near covering the chili and spaghetti. Confronted the Manager and he basically doubled down and defended it. Note this is not an isolated incident here....every time we have come the food is as dry as a bone. Will be our last time at this location. The Skyline on 28 up on the hill is MUCH better. read more

Owner is very cheap. At the old location they spilled chili all over the floor scooped it back up and served it to people, fired someone for spilling a thing of cheese recently and throwing it away instead of putting it back up and serving it to people. They do not know how to treat their staff and servers the owners scream at the servers if they do one little thing wrong. If the serves give a family too many napkins or crackers they will charge the servers for it. The bored of health really needs to check out that skyline. They talk to their staff so rudely cussing at the staff and throwing their hands up. they use dirty rags "towels" for multiple tables at a time. they leave dirty bins filled with plates where people can see them. UGH. I really didn't need to be reminded about this place. My friend and I visited here to try this whole "Cincinnati Chili" for the first time. The ladies who work here heard this, shot us this look, and then gave us a sample of the 5-layer. It was free, on the house, and it was delicious. Before we could even leave the ladies also gave us a little bag of gifts-- hot sauce packet, crouton, and a bib. Overall, people here are just too nice. Well, ok. Yes, you can. But not easily. I've sworn off chain reviews because chains are supposed to be the same wherever you go. That's the beauty of a chain restaurant. So I'll only do a review if there is something out of the norm for a chain, or the particular location. This will happen if there is something unique, if they are extraordinarily good, or extraordinarily bad. ***** OR, I'm traveling and encounter a chain I've never experienced before. That's what this review is. Understanding that this yelp will be read by many Midwesterners, I'm going to take this opportunity to educate them on what you Cincinnati-ans call chili. Please don't be offended by what I describe here as I'm not trying to judge. I'm just trying to describe it so "my people" understand "your people's" cuisine. My sister-in-law moved here about two years ago and was taken aback by the chili here. Working for a hotel, however, she had to understand the local lingo so she could educate others like ourselves from out of town. That's what she did for us. We come from a place where chili is a thick, tomato based soup (for lack of a better word) with ground meat, lots of beans, onions, and different spices. What you Cincinnati-ans call chili, we call, well, spaghetti with meat sauce. The descriptions of the chili are pretty amusing and reflects a trend in the area (which I'll get to in another yelp). You can order a 2-way, 3-way, 4-way, or 5-way chili. They go like this: 2 way - chili (basically sauce and ground beef) over spaghetti noodles 3 way - add cheese 4 way - add beans or onions 5 way - add both beans and onions Being that this was so foreign to us and that my sister-in-law and brother-in-law had never really tried the chili, we decided to have a chili throwdown between the two big chains in Cincinnati: Skyline Chili and Gold Star Chili. I guess the people in Cincy are very loyal to one or the other and get into squabbles over which is better. We ordered a five way and a pint of straight chili from each place. Out of the four of us (me, my wife, my siter-in-law, my brother-in-law), I was the only one that liked the Skyline Chili better. They tasted much the same, but the Skyline Chili had a touch of anice in it, was spicier, and the onions were better. I'm not sure if the two chains use to different types of onions or not. I'm not usually a big fan of anice, but the taste added another dimension to the chili that Gold Star didn't have. We did take out for our throwdown, so I didn't experience the restaurant itself, but the drive-thru guys were friendly. And if you're curious, Skyline was about 70 cents cheaper for the same order. This Skyline does not taste like any other Skyline that I have eaten at. I can't be for sure, but I swear that the chili tastes as if it has been watered down. The service is prompt and friendly, but that has little meaning when they are serving you horrible, watered down (allegedly) chili. read more

Making this short & not so sweet. First i hate drive thrus, as the workers NEVER seem to get anything right.So I go inside to watch them prepare my meals. The place is a mess. Now here you have 6 people working, 2 tables being occupied by customers and there is food on the floor, & dirty dishes piled on tables. I also noticed whomever tables those belonged to, had no tip, as the waitress had already collected. I stood at the counter for a good 3 minutes while the employees, either looked at their cell phones or just stood & talked amongst themselves.. Let me start off with saying that I do not like chili. It's disgusting. But, Skyline's chili is special. It's the only chili that I will eat! The waitresses are phenomenal, they are happy, kind, and chatty! Once me and my sister went in there and they knew exactly what we wanted! This restaurant no longer serves food properly since it has been rebuilt. The skyline deluxe burrito is now a simple chilito on top of a salad. They have started using oversized buns for the cheese coneys and no longer put enough chili on them. Also the cheese Coney buns are not soft and light and warm but cold and dry. Don't waste your time asking for a bottle of hot sauce to purchase because they don't sell it. Last time I went through the drive-through to order a large four-way and a bottle of hot sauce, they said they don't sell it anymore. I know they sell it at Kroger and other grocery stores, I just don't understand why you can't buy it at the source. Very frustrating, and I won't be back. If you're into clean, think twice before going here. I was in late-ish on a Saturday. i saw that the already-gross wall-to-all carpeting was covered with food -- cheese, oyster crackers, spaghetti, etc. The staff was just walking over it. (There were only two tables of customers and numerous staff.) I can't comment on the quality food at this Skyline : I was so grossed out I left. read more
