Fried Oysters

Probably my first and last time visiting this restaurant. Upon receiving the notification that my food was ready, I observed the young man slamming the fry basket against the trash can and what appeared to be food or something that came out of the fryer. Anyways got my order without checking. 15 minutes into my drive I decided to try the food and nearly got in to an accident. I was very displeased with what I saw and after tasting it, I wanted to vomit because it was way over cooked to a crisp and extremely greasy. I didn't asked for fried hard oysters and I didn't ask for a plate full of crumbs. The fries were also fried extra crispy. I guess I just donated about $50 yesterday because this was trash.

I was in the mood for some grilled fish and the local Skrimo Shack satisfied my desires Hot, cooked just right, and yummy! I wish more fast food places made cooked to order foods that are actual Whole Foods.

Wow, fried and grilled seafood with many options! Choose from plates or baskets of fish, shrimp and oysters. Sides are Mac and cheese, fried okra, fries, collard greens, potato salad and cole slaw. We ordered the shrimp basket, the shack rack with witing fish, shrimp, fries and sweet cornbread. The last entree was the big catfish platter with two sides and hush puppies. We plan to return for the grilled shrimp tacos. Very pleasant staff and they checked on us to make sure everything was to our liking. The place isn't fancy but the food is good. Thank you!

I love this place! I came to the small town of Dumfries to visit some friends recently, and one of the best restaurants in that small town was this place, the Skrimp Shack. How could I possibly turn down coming to a place like this? I didn't. We come here for dinner the very first night I got into town. It's a small, counter service restaurant in a strip mall. No big crowds, just walked up to the counter and looked at the menu. There was an impressive amount of seafood on the menu! I had never really analyzed seafood availability in this New England area before, but they had plenty of options for me. I came from the Gulf Coast where you could find it pretty readily, and then I moved to the landlocked Orlando, so this was a fun surprise for me. I weighed some pros and cons, and I ultimately decided to get a nice skrimp basket. About a dozen perfectly fried skrimps with some nice sweet potato fries. Nothing was oily. Everything was crispy. Skrimps were plump and cooked well. I was very happy. I also got to try the mac 'n' cheese side, it was exactly what you would expect. Add some pepper on top and it's perfect. I also got the sweet tea to drink. Very sweet. As a Southerner, it was very satisfying. Overall, I was very happy and I think the Skrimp Shack represented Dumfries very admirably. If I ever come back, I will definitely come back.

Pros: Love the amount and variety of seafood they offer at decently affordable prices. Tons of delicious-sounding sides, everything you could need for your main entrée of your skrimp. Also love the gallon jugs of sweet tea they hand out all willy nilly. Very Southern. The skrimps themselves were actually very plump and juicy and well-cooked. Not oily at all, wonderfully thin and delicate breading. Cons: The only con isn't a real con, but I wish there was an option to just order 100 deliciously fried skrimp. Lol. Tips: If you're going with even just three people, it is very worth it to spring for the family bundle. Bundle it up.

Chicken sandwich, hush puppies, and mac & cheese

We were driving around the area and looking for a quick, early dinner. Skrimp Shack was close by and we gave it a go. I was curious to see how it would be. I had the shrimp and big cat po boy with fries and my wife had the chicken sandwich with hush puppies and mac & cheese. I'll take some blame, I didn't realize the sandwich didn't come with lettuce and tomato. With that, I felt like it had a good number of shrimp, though I wish the catfish piece was SLIGHTLY larger. Flavor was great and it all seemed fresh.

As of first week of Feb 25' yes they were still open, them and their Richmond location near the airport

When is the Manassas location opening?

We don’t have a date yet. You can follow updates on Facebook and text “shack” to 474747 for text updates. We can’t wait to have you!!

Is it Fried food only?? I do not see any ratings for grilled options. Is it any good?

Yes!!! We absolutely have grilled options! We have customers that order grilled on a regular basis.

Are there bones in the fish? Tried to call, but keep getting the answering machine 😔

They are removed. We can’t 100% guarantee, but they are removed. I will also address the store to find out why you can’t get through. Thank you for the note. Let me know if I can help in any other way.

My senses were already tingling with the above characteristics of heaven's food. I definitely was not ready for what I was about to indulge in. The catfish paired with their garlic buffalo fried to perfection, the wings glazed in Vick's special sauce fried to perfection. Mac N Cheese so cheesy and seasoned you can't look at other Mac N Cheese the same. Jasmine rice so good you think an asian made it. Sipping it down with their true sweet tea makes a one two punch of soul flavors. Every order is made on the spot and even with a crowd already forming you know it's worth the wait. Which while you wait they kindly let you listen to some fire music from their speaker. It's safe to say I will be back.

I was a little disappointed at 1st because they wouldn't take my order though IG dm because I didn't want to go order and wait but honestly it was Definity worth the wait because the food taste and texture was top tier even better then a lot of of other soul food restaurant. Update the next day went and got more food on Sunday. Location/ Ambiance 5/5 - Food truck in random parking lot with 1 building that supposed to get turn into the restaurant in couple of months. The truck and seem nice and clean from me looking in. Food 5/5 - Amazing, I couldn't sleep all night because I want more and normally it take me couples of weeks to write review. Deluxe platter 5/5 - $34 One lobster tail, Couple Shrimps and Catfish or Whiting of choice plus 2 side. - Omg heaven in my mouth, the seafood was nice and crispy and thinly coated in crispy batter full of flavors. It honest can feed 2 person the amount you get. It was so good I had to pull over at an empty parking lot. The lobster and Shrimp was cook perfectly and not over cook. The catfish was lovely as well and i love that they use real catfish and not swai fish . Side: Mac cheese 5/5 - perfectly Chessy and cream with right balance of cheese and perfectly al dente macaroni Side: Candie yam 5/5- Sweeten my soul and comforting not overly sweet and went you put in your mouth the aromatic is amazingly Side: Collard Green with turkey 5/5- Fill with savory flavor and Side: Seafood pasta salad 5/5 - Omg it was delicious and actually have crab meat in it not imitation with shrimp. Side: Rasta Pasta 5/5 - This is so good it should be turn into an entree as well. Creamy spice alfredo sauce with penne pasta. It so good even better then cheesecake factory Cajun pasta Side: Cabbage 4.5/5- Amazing buttery flavor cabbage. I am not sure if they over cook it or maybe I reheat for too long because it was a tad bit too soft for me. I like it too not overly over cook, but flavor was on point comforting Turky Chilli $5 - I am not a Chilli girl because I don't like bean but for some reason, the way they make it so good, and they don't put too much bean bit fill with flavor will out being oily Jerk Chicken with 2 side $20- 5/5 Omg i love that they don't use the cheap part of the chicken like drumstick. The wing didn't have grill flavor aroma like you normally get with Jerk chicken but oh the flavor was packing with a hint of spiciness, but the meat was soft and falling of the bone it was amazing with yellow rice. It safe enough for peoples who don't eat spicy. Chicken Curry with 2 side over jasmine rice $20 5/5- Ok this one threw me off the loop went I first open the box. I thought it was curry chicken with potatoes and carrot, but it had chickpea instead. I was nervous it wasn't going to be good but I was truly wrong. It was perfect combo, full with turmeric flavor and chicken boneless meat. It was savory an addicting Banana Pudding $6- I cry eating this in bed it was heavenly perfect bring back memories of ex grandma banana pudding. It was so good and not overly too sweet like magnolia or wegman banana pudding. I hope one day I can ask them to just make me a tray to devour on a weekend. The banana was fresh and a wafer had crunch Lastly, I got lemon cake, it was divine and not overly sweet with great lemony flavor. Overall I hated that I love this place because I was going to start my new year diet. I can't find nothing negative to say about the foods. You can taste the love they put in the cooking to fill the soul. I will probably be coming back every week

1609 Prime Cuts Cocktails

Not bad, but not great either…read more The restaurant's ambience is truly modern and inviting. As someone who resides in Dumfries, this is a very welcome addition to upscale dining, and I was greatly surprised by the decor. I've visited many casinos locally and around the country, including Vegas, Atlantic City, Biloxi, Mississippi, and New Orleans, and I must say this restaurant's decor is on par with many of the other fine-dining restaurants. When I arrived at the restaurant, it was not busy at all. In fact, there were only a few people at the bar and another couple who came in at the same time as us in the dining area. While someone would look at this and be very skeptical, I took it as number one. I was coming on a Sunday night around 5:30. Number two, it may be early for dinner, and number three. I could assure you that my food would come out hot. My server was excellent. The service was terrific, which I had heard was the most mixed part of the experience previously, due to staff turnover and inconsistent service levels for a fine-dining establishment. Akeara was fantastic, I mean, truly remarkable, and coupled with the excellent management and leadership of Veronica Keller, they made the dynamic duo who saved my dining experience. Akeara was very well-versed in the menu and sensitive to dietary restrictions when asked about many of the ways ingredients were prepared. She was invaluable and well-versed in preparation methods, as well as in drink pairings and menu options, to ensure we had a great culinary experience. The food I really enjoyed the calamari. It was fried perfectly. The two dipping sauces were fantastic. The rose salad is absolutely a star on the appetizer menu. I was a little skeptical about the crabcake because the way she described it sounded more like a fried crabcake than a pan-seared one. I think had she mentioned pan-seared, I would have likely gone with a crab cake, but I am certainly not disappointed in the calamari, and again, the salad was phenomenal. The steaks were a different story. I think they marinate the steaks, although I got different answers from the server and the manager when I asked; however, the steaks were a great cut. I saw someone get the bone in Tomahawk, which is presented nicely, hanging from a hook, with the Chef coming out to torch butter over the steak and vegetables beneath. I got the New York strip. It was a very, very lovely piece of meat. The New York strip was severely underseasoned. In fact, I had to ask for steak sauce, which is a cardinal sin of any steak restaurant. I think had they used a little more salt, pepper, and garlic to finish the steak It would've been perfect. The cook was absolutely perfect, medium rare. The seasoning was just off. I also got the risotto and short ribs. The short rib was well seasoned, though so much gravy from the short rib almost covered the entire plate of mushroom risotto. Tasty but just a little disproportionate in presentation. The bread basket was terrific, and the honey butter was nice, though the bread had a slight cheese flavor. It was still a really good combo. The baked potato is by far one of the best values on the menu as a side item. It was large. It was hot and fully loaded. The creamed spinach was a little more cream-cheese-forward, and it seemed like the spinach needed a little something else and seasoning, so it wasn't as bland. The desserts were another story: the toffee cake I thought would look like something I would get at Hell's Kitchen looked more like a very crumbly cornbread with ice cream on top. The vanilla ice cream tasted great, but the cake was just OK. The crème brûlée was on another level. It was fantastic, creamy, full of vanilla, and had a great crunch from the Brulé sugar on top. What really made this meal so good was the service. I talked with my server about my dissatisfaction with the two lobster tails: I did not appreciate being told they were pulled from the lobster shell, and they were served cold and rubbery. The server immediately jumped into action, spoke with the manager, and had the lobster removed from the bill. Thank you so much. But what really impressed me was the time that both the manager and my server spent at the table. Veronica was truly a pleasure to meet. As a military officer who has commanded hundreds and been responsible for thousands, she really hit it out of the park with her ability to problem-solve and immediately address issues as they arose. She was very engaging and really a pleasure to be with. This dynamic duo, who've only worked at this location for less than 5 months combined, really made me say I will come back to the restaurant, assuming they may have had an off night with seasoning and timing in the kitchen. If there's anything to take away, the food is OK (3 stars), the service from this dynamic duo was fantastic, and that's why they got the four stars.

I really want to give this a better review. We ate at 6pm…read moreon a Friday, no reservation. Seating was immediate and our water glasses were filled quickly. The table attendant? Was the best. Never had an empty water glass. Service was friendly but really slow and inconsistent. The server was attentive and accurate sharing how food could be ordered to accommodate food allergy. But I always felt like I was waiting. When a place is busy it is understandable when there are extended wait times, but there were only 4 other tables in our room. One table, seated after we ordered, had different specials explained by a different server. Again. Service was friendly but very slow. Food was not special. The short ribs were exceptionally salty. Risotto was creamy but lacked flavor. The special was Chesapeake Chicken, gluten free and ithoir any adjustments. That was great! But the dish was covered in sauce, overpowering the dish. Dessert included crème brûlée which was also GF and nice but just standard. Good wine menu with reasonable price per glass and standard but not noteworthy cocktail options. I'd prefer to give 4 stars but the price of dishes wasn't what you'd expect for the taste, but staff were friendly and we were fed without having an allergic reaction. On the way home we passed several options that had similar menus that had more flavor and more reliable service. I can now say I checked it Rose's Casino. As a midwestern gal with plenty of Iowa casino experience, this is nothing to write home about. Maybe next year.

Mirna Restaurant [MR]. (3.25 stars)…read more Pardon the Alice in Wonderland meets Rocky Horror Show confusion of thoughts that follows... :) Italian & Greek. Sure they have a "Mediterranean" theme. Mexican & Salvadorian. Sure geographically it makes sense. Italian & Mexican. Wait what?! I literally screamed!! Let me explain... I grew up for my formidable years in Worcester MA. My family (parents, grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles except one, aka entire family) were still in HI but I got shipped off because it was supposed to be a boot camp for me so to speak. What a laugh... My uncle couldn't cook to save any of our lives. I am Asian by descent but definitely not a decent Asian. ;) I never knew what Asian food was until well into my high school years (and was forced to move back to HI). I ate at every neighbors house for almost every meal & wouldn't have changed my culinary journeys for the world!! I grew up on a block with 20+ Italian American families, 4 Mexican American families, and 1 (mine) token Asian family. In the 80s Worcester was definitely a version of Little Italy!! But there were some Mexican influences that we as kids got to enjoy. So when I saw MR, I immediately reverted back to my childhood days & had to stop by to check them out. I haven't found many Italian/Mexican restaurants in my travels... There isn't much info on FB, IG, or Yelp. The first thing I noticed as I entered MR is that English was definitely NOT the language spoken by both patrons & the server/bartender. I don't mean any offense by that. Just an observation. :) I will fully admit I'm not an expert as far as Authentic Mexican food is concerned. But as I grow older, supposedly wiser, & definitely more anti-social... I've learned that authenticity, while appreciated & celebrated is not what I look for at the end of my meal. I look for 1) TASTE. 2) TEXTURE. 3) PRESENTATION. That's what makes me satisfied & happy when it comes to any meal (in that order). Italian is & always will be my favorite but Korean & Mexican are a tie for second! (Wasn't always that way)!! Asian food wasn't even on my "list" until my early 30s?! However, I adore Korean Tacos and Kimchi with my pasta so hence my comment about taste vs authenticity. Anywho... I ordered the two items that were recommended by my server. Steak Burrito. (3.5 stars). The steak is cubed but a little tough to chew. However, the burrito is a very generous portion & cheesy. I did find it interesting that the filling also has romaine lettuce & avocados (which is nowhere on the menu description). First time I've had that combo but texturally it worked... crunchy, creamy, chewy...? I do wish the plate was kept under the salamander for another minute to get the cheese melted completely & slightly crispy on the edges... but still a hearty dish. Lengua Tacos. (3 stars). I grew up with a Yucatán influenced version of Mexican food. All of our Mexican American neighbors emigrated from the Yucatán which relies heavily on RED ONIONS. This is why I probably still adore red onions (or any Onions) BUT still cannot stomach white/round/yellow onions!... NOPE. Yuck. I ordered the Lengua tacos & asked that the cilantro & onions be put on the side because I was told that MR uses white onions. Great I thought! Won't have to pilfer through the disgusting white onions!! Ummm... GONG!!! WRONG. The lengua is already cooked together with white onions so just be aware of that when you order it. Asking for the onions on the side was pointless for me. The lengua was tender & had a nice chew. Tortillas were fresh & greatly appreciated. Even though I wasn't absolutely blown away by my first visit. I'll definitely come back to try some other dishes at MR. Perhaps I may try their Italian dishes... Doubtful but the Mexican dishes definitely have some redeeming qualities that have piqued my interest... for at least another round!! Parking is available in a shared lot. I do wish MR well.

First the positives: I ordered the Gyro with fries and really enjoyed it. Not the best Gyro I have ever had, but good. The other three members of my family ordered different chicken dishes and all three were bad. Overall they were very bland. Using a little seasoning during cooking goes a long way. The chicken on the dishes seemed boiled. I guess this is an easy way to get tender chicken, but man does it remove the flavor! My wife's chicken had tendon and grizzle through out. My daughter's Marsala was gross. Seemed to be a Jared gravy. The wait staff really should not be wearing jeans, especially since the dining room seems nice (except for the paper table cloths.). One of the waitresses had ugly tattoos which no one wants to see at a nice place like this. It's a shame. This place has potential, but the food and wait staff drag it down HARD.
