We missed out on the Prego Pizza (that's the claim to fame for Skipolini's, so much that's its marketing is pitched all over the pizza box) by a day because we were early by 1 day and I had promised I would take wifey to a foot massage and indulge in a fat pizza from Skip's if we were late. Wanted to get something to celebrate a healthy birth with my baby momma. So the wifey asked for the Creamy Pesto, "the one with pesto and bacon". I ordered the large family size which is equal to an XL from Papa John's diameter wise, but it was $41 delivered. I swallowed that one because that's up there with Zachary's Deep Dish Chicago Style pan, which is arguably double the pizza for the same price. Deduct one star for value. The food: I'm much more Italian thin crisp crust style and don't like doughy white bread style crust and this definitely was the pillowy kind. But that's very subjective so it's a neutral rating. The pesto sauce was too frugal, so much that if you pulled away the lukewarm cheese topping, you would not find any pesto green color anywhere. I never thought I'd say that a pizza was "underseasoned" or "underwhelming" but it was. Not salty enough, an atrocity when it comes to super rich sodium pizza type food. Deduct 1 star.
But as a pro, add 1 star for the generous portions of artichoke hearts and zucchini slices. However, with the onions, mushrooms, and zucchini veggies, the pizza was soggy, wet and tasted undercooked. Deduct 1 star! Bummer. If I had paid under $30 for the pizza delivered, I would've enjoyed the purchase more but for $41 delivered, it was too little value and most importantly, the pizza experience was a disappointment. At one point on the second slice, she and I looked at each other and unanimously said, "5 out of 10" on the pizza rating. Further, case in point: Half the pizza is STILL uneaten in the refrigerator and it's almost dinner time, so it's lasted beyond breakfast and lunch the next day. Unheard of for a pizza to survive past midnight in my household. Not going to patronize Skipolini's unless a miracle happens - there is far too much competition in the Concord area for the survival of an overpriced pizza that underwhelmes the taste buds.
Tip to Skipolini's. Fine, charge $40 for a pizza but make sure it knocks it out of the park with a homerun of flavor, caramelize and season the veggies, make sure that cheese is butter brown crispy, crusty, and a mix of textures for the mouth. And size it so the customer feels the pizza is worth at least 4 super burrito's worth of quality wholesome energy. There were 10 slices, so each slice was $4 for a home experience. For the price, we could have gone out for super rolls of sushi in restaurant. read more
