I can't really speak on value or basically anything like that but I can say. What my dad likes about this place is the chance and way to be able to refill his ski pass or something like that. But for me personally if you aren't skiing here the best time is just relaxing in the warm cozy lodge, that has many a bathroom usage. Seriously the lodge was cozy.. only a star less because certain gear creates a stench that isn't pleasant but hey nothing you can do about that. read more

We had a crew of 12 family members go to butternut for a session of tubing. As in true New England fashion it was 17 degrees with a decent wind. The staff at butternut was fantastic. Friendly, helpful and helpful. Tubing was great. Plenty of room (lanes) not too many people and a magic carpet to get you to the top of the hill. Definitely well worth the $30 charge. Prepare yourself and others for super cold temperatures and you won't have an issue. I got super cold quickly but definitely had a great time. Give it a try. read more

Went skiing for the first time ever this weekend at Butternut and had a great experience here. I rented skis, poles, and a helmet and my friend rented a snowboard. Both had a wide range of sizing options available. I took an adult group skiing lesson with Mark. He was knowledgeable, professional, and kept it light-hearted. I ski-ed away feel like I'd gained a lot from the lesson and was better prepared for the slopes because of it. In addition to bigger slopes, Butternut has a range of bunny slopes (with a small lift) and carpets to practice on. These are awesome features of the mountain as they allowed me to practice without the difficulty of the green slopes. Also the lift operators Will and Juan were encouraging, safety-conscious, and great with beginners. They set a good tone for the other skiers. I saw a lot of lessons being given and generally the crowd was respectful and friendly. It did get busy, but wasn't overwhelmed. Only went on one green slope (Cruiser) and it was a bit narrowed than expected for a green, but again, I'm a novice. The only complaint is that my friend took a beginner snowboarding lesson and he felt that the instructor wasn't well-versed in how to snowboard herself (we saw her getting a very introductory lesson right before she "led" the group herself) and the entire group was held-back due to the limitations of one learner (his group never progressed from the carpets to the lift). The variability in the instructors' skill level is a real consideration given the lesson's cost. read more

Many of you know I don't do winter sports. My husband on the other hand, can take it or leave it. He's plays football, plays basketball- get my drift? I don't do skiing- and when I did, it was the bunny slopes I tried almost 20 yrs ago at Mt. Tremper. I don't do ice skating either- because when I did, I'd hold onto Wollman Rink's rails and use them to glide ALLLLLLL around. But somehow, snow tubing has found a small place in me since the first time we tried it in Mont-Tremblant. We scoped Catamount on our way to The Berkshires a few months ago on a day trip and thought about keeping the place in our back pockets for Tubing. But I didn't book fast enough and slots for a Saturday were all taken. Next. Ski Butternut turned out to be way better for us in terms of location and closer to our Inn than Catamount which is on the NY-MA border and 40 minutes away. We wanted to tackle Tubing here- but a.m. and early p.m. slots were sold out. I wanted us to stop by anyway and 'see if they can work something out'- because you can take a girl out of The Bronx, but you can't take The Bronx out of a girl. Still no. Booked online for 6pm, $33ea for 2hrs. Set. If you're doing skiing, parking lot is off to your right as you're pulling in. Tubing parking, is straight down. Head straight to a little shed, check in and get your tube. You can certainly walk your tube uphill or get on the magic carpet and pray to Jesus you don't fall. But you balance and lean your body with one leg forward as your guide. Hubs had this down. Hubs and I aren't totally die-hard, extreme Tubing people. I wish Butternut would also offer a 1hr slot- instead of the 2. I think we were the oldest ones- but there's so much tubing fun to be had here. read more

I love this place. I live nearby so Butternut is my neighborhood spot. I've developed a fondness as it's the place where I learned to ski. The season ticket plans and season rentals make Butternut a cost-effective place to get unlimited hours of skiing. It is a very beautiful place to ski. There are many and varied trails. I'd written a (well earned) bad review of Mount Snow and so I happened to read some other reviews of that place: very corporate. Butternut is not corporate at all: the grooming and snowmaking are excellent. The lift operators and the office staff are kind and efficient as well. They close a 4:00 so I have to go elsewhere for night skiing but the payoff is that the grooming is excellent. For me, one of the downsides of skiing is that you have to look out for treacherous conditions: either glazed with ice or the snow is soft, heavy and traffic-worn. Butternut has more excellent conditions and less treacherous conditions than anywhere else I've gone. They don't have the steepest black diamonds but I don't think those outweigh the plusses of Butternut. read more

As a novice skier, I had a great first experience at Ski Butternut! My review is really focused on the service we received as we did not do much else other than our lesson at Ski Butternut. My girlfriend and I decided to give skiing a try in our 20s, and it turned out to be a fun adventure. We rented out gear online beforehand, which was easy and convenient we also opted to register in a group class to learn the basics. Initially, we wanted private lessons for more personalized instruction, but there were not any available on the day we visited. Thankfully, the group class worked out perfectly as it ended up being just my girlfriend, myself and our incredible instructor JP. The two hour lesson started with plenty of foundational skills. I picked up things quickly enough to go down the full bunny hill on my own, and JP was right there to provide tips and suggestions. My girlfriend preferred practicing the basics on the smaller practice hills near the bunny hill, and JP was so patient and encouraging. I enjoyed our time at Ski Butternut and can't recommend taking a class enough if you are new to skiing. It made all the difference and turned a potentially intimidating experience into an enjoyable one! read more

three stars, maybe this should only be for the tube park. we were there on their LAST day open, lucky us. it rained....a lot. so much so they canned the later session, so we were the last ones. again, it rained so much the other cohorts also tubing left after about 15-20 minutes of rain tubing. the park is short and not as exciting as it should be for the money your forking over, so to that, i am a bit sour on the whole experience. am i pro tuber? no. have i been to other tube parks that seem to be more exciting? yes. as for the mountain itself and the skiing, well, i dont ski, but the family does, they liked it, however, the mountain doesnt have night skiing capabilities and while they dont want to ski in the dark, when the park closes at 4pm, you could get a few more runs until its dark, so for that, i think they are going to seek out another option for their 24-25 ski season. the ski instructors are great (again, from what i hear, they did several lessons between them) but i didnt use them so i cant speak for that. the lodges are fine, the food is ok priced, but they do have free wifi, so thanks for that! pizza, french fries, that all i know about that. read more

The beginner hills are great to learn on, and the staff is very helpful and kind. Our son loved the experience and can't wait to go again. My husband and I were able to get out and try some of the harder trails while he rested and they were fantastic. Not overcrowded at all, even on a gorgeous 45 degree sunny day with $25 lift tickets. So this is a tiny mountain with limited runs...but their weekend deal is unbeatable. $35 for lift tickets?! In a world where prices are skyrocketing everywhere, it's nice to have something where prices have stayed affordable for once. Especially for an already "expensive" sport like boarding/skiing. FYI: lift tickets will need to be booked in advance online as there are only a limited number of spots. All the staff I encountered there were so friendly and helpful. First time skiing and took lessons with the most amazing, patient and knowledgeable instructor - Usher! He was great with us (class of 6). Even had my teen/twenty year old kids confident and skiing after an hour and a half! The mountain was nice, my only issue is we had to get in and out of 4 lines - 1. Boots, 2. Skis, 3. Helmet, 4. What a miserable place to be. Took the family there for a weekend. Seemed like a family friendly place a real little kid could learn? Yeah. Wrong. It's a tiny mountain. Probably better to just head 20 or so more minutes to Jiminy Peak. But that's written on the tin, so let's not hold that against them. Lodge is full of ridiculously priced and unhealthy food. Not really unique to Butternut, so let's not hold that against them. What really defines the soul of this place is the attitude of "don't ask me, I just work here" that permeates every employee you'll encounter. We started out getting rentals for our real little kid. The first thing you experience through the door is a woman screaming at the top of her lungs for people to wear covid masks. I appreciate her goal. The part of me that wanted to give her a tip of just standing outside the door to calmly talk to folks before they walked in was overruled by the part of me that didn't want to help this miserable cretin yelling at kids. Her name tag literally said "sorry" like she's a sorry excuse for someone who has to deal with families. Once inside the concept of an orderly line or employees helping a customer is apparently foreign to whoever manages this team. Employees half heartedly wave a finger in a general direction while half paying attention, then when you get to the end of that line the person you've waited to talk to is confused why you're there and waves you elsewhere while unhelpfully engaged in a separate conversation. "10 Lifts" is their marketing claim. So when weather took down 3 of them we figured it would be fine. Well... it's dishonest. They have 4 lifts and a bunny slope with a few. So there was 1 lift with massive waits. Other places believe in orderly lines. But not Butternut! They're not an advocate of ropes or lanes. Instead there's a scrum of people trying to squeeze into the lift gates, flustered skiers trying their best to be polite to one another. To make matters worse, the people running the lift don't bother trying to fill each chair. So while there's a line of folks waiting patiently, chairs are going up with two or three empty seats... come on guys. Won't be back. read more

We had a great day here coming from eastern MA. The drive in was a piece of cake. $25 Fridays is an AWESOME treat! I had to rent skis for my daughter. The young girl at ski rentals was a little rude. She didn't talk or tell us where to go, she just motioned with her head. Like a snide teenager. But the ski and boot guys were very friendly and helpful. There was a good selection of slopes. I loved the green trail from the summit. The LL Bean smores truck is always a win in our book. We can't wait to come back. read more

I had a great time on the slopes today. They just got hit with over a foot of snow earlier in the week so I knew the conditions would be great. I took the day off work to enjoy the $25 weekday lift ticket. I've never been to Butternut before but I think it just became my favorite in the area. I read a review online before I came that this place was flat as a pancake. I decided that I enjoy pancake snowboarding, it was right inline with my skill level. read more

I pride myself on giving a fair review. This ski area has some good attributes, but in my opinion, has become much less customer-friendly and less attractive than just several years ago, and the downward trend seems to be continuing. Let's initially talk about pricing. Butternut used to have very attractive prices, such as $25 weekday ski rates. That jumped up by 40 %. And the increase in season ticket prices has also been dramatic. Just 3-4 years ago, I bought a season ticket for $199, on an early-season special. That ticket has gone up dramatically, to $339. This year, I had to reduce the scope of the ticket, still paying $249, but only with weekdays; and with a number of holiday blackouts. (Case in point on unreasonableness: With a fully-paid season pass limited to weekdays, I wanted to know how much it would be to use the area on a recent Saturday. I figured a "bump-up" of $15-$25 would be fair. Instead, they told me it would be the full $85! That's greed). And please, don't throw this onto the pandemic, or inflation, or other costs. Butternut was on this upward-ticket flight, well-before this recent inflation jump. Have other ski areas gone up in price? Certainly. But they offer much more than Butternut in a number of ways, some described below. Another area in which Butternut has been unreasonable: high food prices for marginal quality. $4.25 for a coffee, and $8.00 for a hot dog, are ridiculous. It's not like this ski area has to ship in the food supplies through mountain passes in Montana. It's just a grab for more money. On the plus-side, Butternut usually does a good job with snow-making, and trail maintenance. However, this past year, I noticed some trail-neglect, e.g., on the far side of the Cruiser trail, and on the Main Street trail. Serious holes, crevices, or slants on the berm at a trail's edge need to be marked!) Moreover, the lifts at Butternut - especially the Top Flight Quad - are dismally slow, with frequent stops. The detachable lift at Jiminy Peak (also in the Berkshires) is approximately the same length, but moves people up the mountain at a much quicker and more-comfortable speed. It's time for Butternut to take some of the cash coming in and invest in a modern ski lift. It also seemed that both the Highline Quad and the Overbrook lift were down way too much for repairs this past year, limiting easy access to a number of trails. Butternut also seems eager to close some lifts on weekdays, also making skiing less convenient. The base facility is convenient to the parking lot (very "rutty", by the way), and has a good view of some of the trails. It could be remodeled into an attractive New England lodge, but is, instead, quite plain and sterile, with relatively poor lighting. Moreover, the signs discouraging sitting in the lodge for any length of time are annoying (We're past the pandemic). And the Men's room sometimes has a heavy sewer-smell wafting out the door. Butternut seems to have a nice tubing area, and also a good, small area for beginners. However, with a shut-down at 4 PM and no night skiing, the time available to take advantage of a lift ticket is limited. That's all I have for now, but I will continue to make observations and critique the area. But in general, there is much less to recommend Butternut than in past seasons. Less expensive than some of the mid-size or large ski areas? Yes. But much less to serve the customer as well. read more

We came here to ski on a Saturday with a group of 8 adults. There was no area to drop your equipment before you parked your car so we ended up walking across the parking lot with all of our gear in hand. One couple had to rent skis and it took the better part of an hour. What a waste of time! And it wasn't cheap either. Almost $100 for two people for one day. I rented mine off the mountain for three days for $40. The locker area is very cramped and outdated. The lockers themselves are the old quarter/coin slot ones and they really aren't very big considering how much stuff most people bring. We stopped for a bathroom break at the upper lodge at lunchtime and it was beyond mobbed. Literally what a claustrophobic person's nightmare is made of. We all decided to forgo eating at the mountain that day. The lifts take FOREVER. They are constantly slowing down and stopping. To be fair, those lifts could have easily barreled over me if the ski lift attendants didn't slow down each chair before it gets to the backs of people's knees. Be very cautious and aware when you are loading-especially if you have little kids with you. The slopes were really well groomed and powdery when we got there. We spent time all over the mountain and had a really great day on the actual slopes. Our last run of the day on Freewheeler ended of being REALLY icy at the bottom. My friend and I both almost ate it at the same spots on the way down. All in all, it just wasn't a great experience. I love this Mountain. Sure it has some problems. But why get so negative. Lets start by some of the things it does well. 1. A pretty good value. All day adult weekend tickets are in the $60 range. They have pretty good 1st time skier packages. If you look around there are ways to save money on the tickets and lessons. For families with young kids this is a great mountain. It won't break the bank of trying to learn at a big name resort. 2. A nice mix of trails. Yeah I know. With a vertical of 1000 feet you will be down the mountain in a jiffy but the 22 trails have kept me busy this season. And I have skied since I was 5. 3. Upper lodge food selection and prices. Of course they have the usual hamburger, hotdogs, and chicken nuggets. But they do have other things like burritos and a turkey dinner station. Prices are not outrageous either. 4. A great ski lesson school. They have lessons running all throughout the day. For any level of skier and the prices are very good. My kid is a lesson nut. She loves to take lessons on anything. And here I don't have to worry about breaking the bank. 5. Will. He is a friendly lift attendant at the Paddy Wagon. Really takes care of the kids and makes it a fun experience for them. 6. Town of Great Barrington. Love this town. Has a nice charm to it. A nice mix of restaurants and a few great hotels. Best of all it is super close to Butternut. Negatives. 1. It seems like you have to trek forever from the base lodge to get to some of the lifts. Considering its a small mountain it gets a bit annoying. 2. The lifts are pretty slow. No detachable quads here. But I don't really care about that Catch up on some family time on the lifts. Overall a great spot. Recommend highly. read more

Me and the posse came here for a hardcore day of.....TUBING. Actually it was more like an hour and a half until we were freezing and were in need of some adult beverages. It's $18 per person and you get two hours of tubing---a hefty tube and use of the small tube lift. We felt lazy using the lift so we walked up the hill... only once and then after loved the lift b/c our fat asses did not need that sort of exertion. Once at the top of the hill there are 5 or 6 lanes where u can shoot down but be aware that dumb-ass kiddles will jump in front of you and are basically like clydesdale's with blinders on. It's no biggy that they jump in front of you really, except for when you can't stop on the slippery ice and you plow into them at the bottom. Parents REALLY need to teach more manners in this society, oy. It was fun enough and damn was it more of a work-out than you think. My arms felt like I was a trollop left in the stocks for 48 hours, they were killing me from hauling the tube and holding on on the way down the slope slides. For ppl who don't know how to ski/board, or dont have the equipment or dough to shell out, tubing is cool enough to do for two hours. I snowboard myself but i'm still used to my backwoods slopes, not the ski terrain. I also can't stand the snow and cold for more than two hours so tubing was perfect. read more

Spending a lovely president weekend ski trip up here with friends in the Berkshires!! Butternut is a lovely small cozy ski mountain!! Staffs are sooo friendly!! Food is good!! The view is gorgeous!! I mean Gorgeous!! One area to improve: they can have more staff in the rental area. My husband and son waited an hour to get the rental. But staffs are soooo thoughtful! My husband and I wanted to try snowboarding and we are glad we choose Ski Butternut. From our arrival till we left the staff was very kind and helpful. Liane gave us an overview of what to expect with the Beginner's Adult Snowboarding class. She also lead us to get our rentals. Our instructor Cole was GREAT!! He was very patient and went over each step until the group got it. The day we went the condition was icy and Cole altered hos lesson to ensure we would enjoy the lesson but most importantly be safe. If you take a class prior to 12pm you are able to take another class for free after 2pm. My husband took the second class and was happy with the lesson Van provided. Van taught him how to get up and down on the lift as well as additional snowboarding techniques. We also did tubing and had a blast! We are looking forward to going back next winter. read more

I have been coming to Butternut for about 15 years now and it has always been one of my favorite mountains to board on in the immediate area. I went yesterday with a few of my friends for the day and went into the lower lodge to buy our lift tickets. I went up to the counter and right off the bat, the girl was completely rude. An attitude when she talked and the best yet, she proceeded to throw my credit card back toward me like i was pissing her off? So that kind of made me a little mad to start my day. We went out on a few runs and went back inside to the same girl to buy a park pass. Yet again she was rude saying she was only there for 10 mins. We filled out the waiver.. Which includes a short quiz. We filled it out but her and another girl behind the counter continued to be rude to us. Telling me my answers were wrong. I started to give her a little taste of her own medicine. She shut up real quick. No need to be rude to customers who come here to spend money and have a good time. It just really made me mad an idk when i'll be going there next. I love the mountain but she rubbed me the wrong way. read more

I always have a good time here, the prices are good, the location is good for me, I love going during the week, it feels like YOUR mountain, and tickets are only $25! They have a ski & stay deal that I am very interested in! You get a hotel room and tickets for $65 to $95, during the week....what a deal! Having tried various ski areas not far from NYC with mixed results, I was completely impressed and walked away from a full day at Ski Butternut with a smile across my face! If you have young kids who are just learning, please do yourself a favor and bring them here. If coming from the NYC region, the extra drive is well worth it (and the drive itself is not bad!). We signed our two kids (8 and 9 years-old) up for all-day "Adventurers" lesson packages. The instructors were friendly, great with kids, and provided constructive lessons (including a full debrief by the instructor that pointed out each child's strengths and weaknesses, and a marked report card). My wife and I were able to enjoy ourselves the rest of the day without worrying about the kids. The same goes for adult beginners. The instructors are top-notch, and take their time to start from very small basics and progress through more advanced techniques, which will allow you to get down the hill on day one. The atmosphere was friendly, relaxed, and made for a truly enjoyable day. I would also like to add that all of the staff we dealt with were very helpful and friendly. We started early, and the rental process was a breeze. Returning equipment was also a welcome surprise. I've been places where the lines are out of control at day's end, but Butternut has all of their equipment tagged with barcodes that made returning skis, boots, and helmuts a painless experience. At the end of the day, my kids were going down the beginner slopes on their own, and begging to return (this, after a terrible experience at a NY hill that essentially "stole" our money for the kid's private lessons - they didn't teach a single thing, and the kids left in tears). We are now contemplating season passes at Butternut for next year, as we will most definitely return! Also be sure to spend some time in Great Barrington, the small town next to Butternut. It is quaint, and filled with fun shops and restaurants. I just read that it was ranked #1 in the Smithsonian Magazine's 2012 list of "The 20 Best Small Towns in America". Worst Customer Service Ever! You would think a mountain that depends on not only vacationers but also local traffic would at least make an effort concerning their customer service. They are truly the worst ever. Do not attempt to rent equipment. They may have 4 or 5 people in the main office mulling around making small talk, but go into the rental building and you will find winding lines out the door and one lone girl taking peoples information. And confusion sets in as you try to make it down the tiny corridor as people try boots on and children are crying and the employees running the rental booths look like they would rather be any where else than where they are. Scowls and grumbles meet your inquiries. Also the extra $50 they charge local students for signing up "late" for lessons leaves a bad taste in my mouth. As a working parent who arrived with cash on hand on the the first of December to pay for the lessons and was turned away so the mountain can simply squeeze more money out of local parents is terrible, especially on a busy holiday weekend. As someone that works at an upscale local hotel I can tell you right now that I will no longer be sending our customers to Butternut. Great first time experience for the kids. Get there early to avoid the rush later, even during the holiday week it was busy but manageable. Kids did first time ski and snowboard lessons and the instructors were very patient, friendly and the kids enjoyed their experiences. Prices were reasonable, better than some of the other places and its a good size place for decent skiing. Also returned for tubing which was fun and exhausted the kids. read more

This is a great, family friendly mountain. Slopes are great and almost always well groomed. Ski school and ski lessons are fantastic as well. My kids progressed so quickly through their instruction. The guys that run the paddy wagon lift are great w kids and my kids learned how to ride a lift independently through their patience. However, lunch time the place turns to chaos because the lodges don't have enough seating to accommodate everyone. And on race days people come at 8-9am and camp out all day holding tables. It isn't uncommon to find families eating on the floor in the hallways. Lodges, generally speaking, are run down and the bathroom in the lower lodge gets disgusting pretty quickly. It's a shame because I really like this mountain but the experience in the lodges takes away from a pleasant skiing experience. read more

A good beginner mountain. The grooming I good and the lodges are adequate. Very friendly and family friendly. Not much apre ski, but Great Barrington is right there, and has some things to do. Not over prices very reasonable. read more

One of my favorite mountains and has been since I was a kid. Great instruction, perfect place for beginners and intermediates with plenty for advanced too. Dont forget the tubing park for the kids. read more

Totally impressed, as I was expecting much less out of this ski area. Decent size mountain, very family and wallet friendly. Not overcrowded and decently quick lifts. Will return -1 star, need a bigger lodge/changing area... read more
