After work last Wednesday, three of us were craving Thai food in the Falls Church area, which has…read morean abundant of fantastic Thai restaurants. While it was hard to choose just one, we ultimately went with One Night in Bangkok, since the decor and strong reviews on both Yelp and Google caught our attention.
We parked in the lot in the back, and the restaurant is located on the second floor, where Duangrat's (another Thai restaurant) is. Upon arriving around 5 PM, it was pretty empty. The restaurant shares its space with a small market, and the interior features lots of neon lights and bold decor, giving it a vibrant street-food vibe.
Our server (who is also the owner) was extremely friendly. She walked us through the entire menu and recommended her favorites, making sure we always had water and felt comfortable throughout the meal.
Between the three of us, we shared two appetizers, two entrees, and a dessert to wrap up our meal nicely.
KANOM JEEB - 10
The shape reminded me of Cantonese siu mai, with open-faced filling wrapped with wonton skins. Each order came with four dumplings, generously stuffed with minced pork and corn, sitting atop a sweet, soy-based marinade. Unlike Cantonese siu mai, which is purely savory, these had a noticeable sweetness. I really enjoyed them, so much so that my friends let me have the last one.
SAMOSAS - 12
Each order came with four samosas, stuffed with potatoes and (possibly) peas. The pastry was very crispy, and the filling was well-seasoned and flavorful. They tasted freshly prepared, as they arrived hot while we were eating.
PAD SI EW - 17
+1 for beef
As basic as pad si ew is, it's one of my favorite Thai dishes. The wide rice noodles were quite fresh and pleasantly chewy, with a good amount of Chinese broccoli and beef stir-fried in. The sauce was spot-on -- savory with hints of sweetness. I also liked that the fried egg on top was really fluffy, allowing the sauce to seep through nicely. Overall, a solid dish.
RABIENG'S ROAST PORK CURRY - 18
We asked for the curry to be mild since two of us have a very low spice tolerance, but even then one of my friends was sweating profusely. The roast pork was incredibly juicy and tender, which we loved. The curry itself was flavorful, though a bit overpowering and salty, which meant I had to eat a lot of rice to balance it out. The tomatoes added a nice touch of sweetness.
CHINESE BEIGNETS - 9
To wrap things up, we enjoyed an order of Chinese beignets (aka 油条). They were perfectly fried and topped with powdered sugar and a light drizzle of condensed milk. Surprisingly light despite being fried dough, this dessert was highly recommended by the owner, who emphasized how well the chef prepares it, and she wasn't wrong. Definitely worth ordering!
Overall, the food was good, and we were satisfied with our choices. The was more than enough for all three of us, and everything came at a very affordable price.
