Also, the Mimosa Flight is very convenient if you're undecided on what to drink. They don't skimp on the alcohol and the portions are bigger compared to many other restaurants. Simple Eats is a cute beach rustic place that sells local beer/wine/art which is cute. The decor is nice and comfortable to be in. Our experience started out nice, and the place was rather unbusy. We made conversation with our waitress because she graduated from Virginia Wesleyan, which I am about to graduate from. Since that initial conversation the whole experience went down hill. To begin, my mom got the garden omelet and I ordered the crab bennie. The food came out promptly, but by another waitress. Let's start with my moms order, everything, even the toast (!!!), was over salted. And to top it off, the greasy kitchen receipt was still stuck to the plate and hidden under the toast. My food looked pretty good but was rather cold. A bennie should never be served on a cronut because it is soft, too much bread, and gets soggy. They should consider a baguette. I don't know how they cooked the crab cake but it was soggy and soft. No bake or fry on to it. It was also full of shell! The egg was poached nicely but overall it was not a good meal. No flavor or anything. We finished our food rather quickly, the place is still dead, and our waitress is no where to be found. We waited 10 minutes before the hostess came to check on us. We practically begged for our check. Another 15 minutes go by and our waitress has been trying to make a martini for her only other table the entire time. And then she goes into the back chatting with the other waitress for 10 more minutes. My mom finally got up and asked a lady (whom we assume to be a manager since she was at the counter signing checks) to please charge us so we can go. 35+ minutes to get a check and leave. No one seemed to be working. Every staff member, except the hostess, was busy talking. I have never left an establishment so angry! I am very fair and generous with my reviews. I understand restaurant business, Simple Eats, however, does not. Complete and utter disappointment. read more

My boyfriend and I found this looking for a new place to try for brunch. After much deliberation, we finally decided on Simple Eats. Neither of us had ever heard of it before, but we still thought we'd give it a try. We were definitely very happy with our choice! Our food was perfectly cooked. And their portions are very generous. I normally wouldn't be able to finish a meal of this size, but the food was just too good! Despite feeling so full part of the way into my meal, I just could not stop eating! It was too good for me to just stop. We absolutely loved out food! The restaurant is very cute, and I love the way it's decorated. It's very spacious, which I liked. I hate when tables are so close together you can very clearly hear the conversations of the people around you. It had a nice clean look to it. The service was good as well. Our server was friendly and offered us some great suggestions for what to eat and drink. He was able to answer all of my boyfriends questions about the food and the beer. We rode bikes and parked where Sandy's (the owner) son made the bike rack :) We had beer from the tap and a simple mimosa that was $4 and awesome! We had each of the 3 tacos that were phenomenal and the habanero melon potato salad that was light with a nice kick! The service from Chris was top notch. We purchased some local produce that was better priced and fresher than any grocery. Highly recommended Simple Eats and we will be back. The place is beautiful and cozy inside too. Live nearby and have gone multiple times across all meal times. I'd say they're best for lunch and known for their sandwiches. "The Schmidty" is my favorite on the French bread! Love getting this to-go with a bag of chips and taking it to the beach. They also have great shakes! I know people who also love their salads. What else I've tried but not loved: Crab cake was not my favorite (Bubba's has the best I've tried so far). And breakfast options seemed overpriced for what you get. I'll stick to the sandwiches! Neither the hostess nor the two waitresses who worked outside wore masks!! We ate outside on the patio and the tables were more than six feet apart which was great. Unclear if the paper menus are being reused as they were collected. This place truly is a gem, unassuming on the outside and quite lovely on the inside. We headed there for breakfast one morning, nearly missed it, and are glad we didn't. First, the interior - it's lovely in a beach-y/found items/Pinterest-y way, with lots of light gray and white painted wood, a large cable reel reused as a table top, festive but simple strings of light draped along the ceiling, mis-matched chairs and so on. The menu is interesting, featuring locally sourced items. We were really looking for Country (salt-cured) ham, a favorite breakfast food never found up north, and at first were told they didn't have it. We noticed though it was an ingredient of another dish, and, explaining our situation, were happily provided with a small plate of thinly sliced very good ham. Everything got high ratings - from the breakfast burrito, which was so good the NMT took the extra with him and ate it in the car, to the eggs to the french toast and biscuits & gravy. Service was accommodating (see above request for country ham) and cheerful. A definite breakfast treasure along a cluttered and unfocused stretch of Shore Drive. Highly recommend. read more

Driving into Simply Eats, I wasn't sure what to expect. It looks like a house converted into restaurant and I found myself thinking - is this a good idea? I was pleasantly surprised as soon as I entered. The décor is super kitschy. It has the whole farm-to-table/southern living magazine charm. We decided to sit on the back patio, which over looks the parking lot, but can easily seat a party of six per picnic table. It took quiet a while for our server to greet us, so I decided hunt her down. As soon as I entered the building, she told me she would be out as soon as she finished helping this table. She was taking orders for a large group of ladies who look like they belonged in a garden club. If you've ever worked in food service, you know how that goes. She was apologetic and sweet when served us. Overall, the service was good. Now the food. I ordered a sweet tea and the Squealers. Very Southern, I know. The sweet tea came in a mason jar with a slice of orange. Once again, very Southern. It was actually one of the best sweet teas I've had in recent memory. It wasn't overly sweet, which is what I'm used to when ordering sweet tea. The Squealers were definitely something to squeal about. There were three little piggies and all of them were delicious. There was a generous portion of savory and sweet bbq nestled into little buns. I could literally eat 20 of these. Does that make me the big bad wolf? Probably. Their houseslaw was phenomenal and not like the typical 80% mayo coleslaw you get everywhere else. Whenever I'm back in town, I'll just simply eat here again! read more

I've been looking forward to go to Simple Eats all week after finding it on Yelp. My brunch obsession was all too real this week. I convinced my friend to come down to VA Beach to watch the sunrise at the beach by telling him we could get some really awesome breakfast afterwards. And luckily, the sunrise and Simple Eats was worth the 5:30 AM wake up on a Saturday morning. They have a small parking lot out front, the lines aren't too clear, but we got there around 7:25 AM, and there was only one car out there. Parking wasn't too much of a problem, but it looks like it could be difficult later on/around peak summer season. There's not too much side parking around either. The moment we walked in, I knew I was going to like this place. The decor was beautiful. It was cozy with lights strung up around the ceilings, and the walls had plenty of art decorating it. I immediately felt relaxed and at home here. Looking from the outside, Simple Eats is bigger on the inside than I thought it'd be. There was only one other table in there when we got here. There's a sign that said the wait to be seated. We waited for a while, but nobody was around. The chef walked across the restaurant and said hi to us, but didn't say anything about sitting down. I'm guessing she didn't tell the waitress we were here either, because nobody ever came out. It was a little weird. Finally after waiting a little more, we decided to just seat ourselves. The waitress came out and greeted us. My friend and I glanced over the menu while the waitress went to get our waters. The menu is one page, but it's a farm to table restaurant, which in my opinion means fresher ingredients and higher quality (over quantity). I saw signs that they have Three Ships Coffee too! My friend decided on the BELT and I got the duck sandwich (duck breast, mixed greens, tomatoes, and pimento cheese on sourdough bread). We also got the Edward Sausage, grilled broccolini, and Parmesan flatbread. After reading reviews, I wasn't sure how fast the food was going to come out, but since we (at this point) were the only people left, it came out fairly quickly. The flatbread was pipping hot. It was also DELICIOUS. The sausage was tasty and went well with the broccolini. It flavors paired well together. The sauce on top was a perfect complement. Everything tasted fresh as well. Our sandwiches came out soon afterwards. My sandwich was good. I have high standards for duck, and honestly the duck breast was a little dry. The thick slice of tomatoes definitely helped a little. The pimento cheese was good, but I don't know if it went too well with the duck. The sandwich came with some seasonal chopped up veggies. My friend and I agreed it would go well mixed into a pasta salad. This place was also one of the first places where the hot sauce on the table was actually kind of hot! It definitely had a kick to it that I actually really liked. It's the type of hot sauce when you first have it, you're just kind of like "eh, I don't know if I like this, it kind of just tastes like hot" But it grows on you. I love the decor and ambiance of this place. The flatbread was hands down the best thing there. I wish my duck sandwich wasn't as dry, but I'm not complaining too much. They do give you a LOT of duck in the sandwich. They also have some delicious looking mimosas that I want to try the next time I'm here. They also have sake mojitos and sake bloody mary's which sound super interesting. Get here early for a quiet and relaxing meal. And get the flatbread! I should start this review by saying that there were probably 6 tables sat, two waitresses and two hostesses in the restaurant the day I went. It was a Monday around 11:30am. They are taking "farm to table" way too seriously here... I think that they legitimately had to go to a farm to get us our food, it took THAT long. I brought my sister who was visiting here for lunch with my 18 month old son. I asked for a side of potatoes and fruit for my son the second we sat down, putting emphasis on whatever comes out first we will take because he was hungry. After 20 minutes I thought it was pretty strange that we hadn't gotten either thing, nor had our waitress come back to take our order. Within these 20 minutes one of the hostesses brought me a used glass of water (???) and when I told her she had the wrong table to she "no this is yours! I refilled it for you"... nice intentions but definitely had the wrong table. Needless to say I didn't drink this. I had spoken to the waitress about how I was unhappy about the wait time for a side of fruit, and it quickly came out after that. However the side of "fresh fruit" was the opposite of fresh, see attached pictures. Didn't feel comfortable eating this. And the potatoes were cold when they came out, which was fine because they were cool enough to give to my son right away but that tells me they had been sitting on the counter for a while. About 45 minutes after ordering our food (we both got breakfast burritos) our food finally came out... at this point we have been at the restaurant for over an hour. The food looked delicious but the insides were completely charred, the bacon was black and the eggs were brown. Also the side of "salsa" was extremely questionable. The person cooking/prepping the food needs to be evaluated. After receiving this inedible food I requested to speak to a manager, at which time the waitress told me that there was no manager in... I truly felt bad for this waitress, the kitchen is clearly struggling and this is an issue for the manager, NOT HER. I kindly told her what the issue was and told her I would not be eating this therefore would not be paying for it. She had to go to the back to call the manager to get approval for this, and they only approved of me getting 50% off of my burrito. I flat out told her that I was paying $0 for the very few bites of the burrito I had. She understood and honored my request. Truly disappointed by this place. It has such potential but falls flat on service & quality of food. Take your business to the leaping lizard if you're wanting a good "farm to table" experience in VB. read more

Nothing wrong with this place. The Bloody Mary flight was strong, but not flavorful. Liked it, didn't love it. My B.E.L.T. (Bacon Egg Lettuce Tomato) was decent. Paltry serving of bacon but 2 FANTASTIC poached eggs (cooked to a Yolky perfection). Side of fried country potatoes were delicious. The crab cake Benedict was so-so. Lots of shells and the crab cakes were not as nice as we've had at other joints. All in all Simple Eats was a fine experience. Good service, OK food. As others have said, it's just OK. I don't think I'd go back again. We'd hit up Bay Local again before here. read more

This place is awesome! I love the concept of it, not only do you know your food is fresh but the idea of supporting small time farmers by purchasing local produce is fantastic. I can see this place rivaling bay local, only disadvantage is its further down shore drive and the outside is a bit unassuming. The inside decor is great though, very beach chic which is perfect for this neighborhood! Now onto the food. They have their regular menu and then a specials menu. It's a breakfast to lunch style place with a great selection of items really tailored to the local produce available. I got the garden omelet which comes with mushrooms, spinach, tomatoes and cheddar in it, homefries, and a biscuit (you have a choice between about 5 different breads). You can tell everything was very fresh. My boyfriend got the sailors breakfast or something like that. Both plates had ample amounts of food on it, I ended up taking some home because I couldn't finish it. The servers were very pleasant, all looked happy to be there, and they were always checking in if we wanted our coffee topped off. I really want to go for an early lunch and get one of their sandwiches because those looked so appetizing! They also have some very appealing looking smoothies and my boyfriend (who generally hates tomatoes) says the bloody Mary's are very good. There is local art on the wall for sale and overall a very comfortable, relaxed setting to the place. I look forward to going again and, although I'd hate to have it packed, I really hope this place succeeds and becomes another local hot spot like bay local. read more

I REALLY enjoyed this place. We were actually headed somewhere else for my moms birthday brunch but through various happenings found ourselves here. The decor is seriously right up my alley, kind of a vintage chic look with bright colors and mismatched chairs and big wooden tables. Plenty of food and drink options to choose from and the waitress couldn't have been any nicer. Drinks were endlessly refilled and the food was delicious. It's a farm to table place so they also sell produce. There's a super cute patio area in the back that's nice because it's covered so you get some shade. Can't wait to head back here! read more

This review is during phase 2 Covid pandemic We were excited to get some farm to table food in Virginia Beach. We were coming from northern Virginia where everyone is following governer's orders and waiters/ kitchen staff wear masks. I was very concerned to see that the wait staff were not wearing masks in this restaurant. I got my order through a pick up window and the person giving it to me was not wearing a mask. I then later called the restaurant to find out the procedures they were following and was assured that the kitchen staff all wore masks but the rest of staff had a choice not to wear masks. I was honestly so scared to eat the food as I had no idea how it was prepared. But I on the other hand was so tired after a long drive and at the end of a long day to get something else somewhere else and chose to believe that people who prepped food were practicing safe food handling procedures. Our crabcake was pretty good, but the burger was a bit disappointing, just nothing special. Both were on sourdough which was not toasted enough and did not have much flavor. I would not go there again until this Covid business is over. But I might give it another try when this is all over. I was initially excited about many interesting options on the menu. But my two stars are for not keeping their customers safe! So if you don't care about Covid,check them out and you might like what they have to offer. If you are, like me, concerned about keeping your family safe, I absolutely do not recommend it! I would have given it one star, but the food redeemed it enough for 2 stars. read more

Have passed this place a bazillion times. Today was different. So happy to be there. First off, service was a bit slow, possibly just understaffed because of Covid. Let's talk about this meal I enjoyed. Started with a cup of Three Ships Coffee, bold, dark and rich. Such awesome choices to make from the many menu offerings. My friend ordered the Reuben with modifications and the kitchen was most accommodating and spot on. Friend really enjoyed it. I ordered the Pork Belly Bowl, my but that was outstanding, chef knows his way around pork belly, tender, juicy and crispy exterior. The sweet potato hash, spinach and that beautiful sunny side egg on top. What can I say Bowl empty, belly full. I shall return. It's good food that is made from scratch to the cooks in the back that make it. They did an excellent job of plating to not messing it up just the right temperature, our service experience was excellent. My daughter and her boyfriend were so excited to take me and my son and his wife visiting from out of town to check out this new place they had discovered. There was to be no negotiations!! They assured us this was the coolest place and I read all the raving reviews. !! I have driven by the place so many times myself going down shore Drive I was looking forward to it also.We wanted to sit outside but we were told the flies outside were really quite bad... so we sat inside right in front of the kitchen on a long table admiring the eclectic decor. Two of us ordered coffee and it was at best lukewarm. Not a problem Nicole rectified that right away. It was at least 10 minutes before we got our orders taken. And 45 minutes before we received our food. I have spent 35 years in the restaurant business and never experienced anything like it. But it gave us time to notice the cooks not wearing any masks, the bartender with a mask strapped across his bearded chin instead of his nose and mouth... The waitresses and bus boys with their masks down below their noses... I mean what's the point of even wearing oneSMH!? When the food finally arrived (after I notified the hostess how ridiculous the wait was)... We weren't even given silverware or napkins. We had to get up and go get that ourselves from the hostess stand because we couldn't find our waitress. I'm giving it two stars because the food was good! But the rest of the experience was horrific. When we were done we had to sit for a while and finally ask a hostess if we could get a check... Then we were given the wrong check!!! Someone else's check who had already pre-paid $83 LOL ... Just get me out of here at this point! Yes we still tipped Nicole 20% ... Felt sorry for her working in a place like this! Maybe now she can afford a mask that fits over her nose. I really hate to leave reviews like this for a local independent restaurant especially after reading how people are getting their to go orders in 10 minutes! Nearly an hour wait for sit down customers on a Saturday at noon with no wait and open tables. ‍ was there a manager on duty? This was my second time and my last time visiting Simple Eats which is disappointing being local to me. My fiancé ordered the B(E)LT sandwich. The egg was virtually non-existent. I ordered the French toast with sausage. It came with one VERY small sausage and was told that was correct after asking. They offered to sell me 2 more for $3. Also, had to ask for additional syrup and watched my waitress eating bacon and talking at the bar while holding my syrup. This really pissed me off. Finally the owner or manager came by to ask about our meal and we showed her the lack of egg on the sandwich. She did nothing besides offering to bring her more egg once we were all done with lunch which we declined. My fiancé asked why I didn't address the other options, I responded there was no reason to offer feedback to people who don't want to fix an issue. It would be a great restaurant if there wasn't a bunch of teenagers running the show. We waited 25 minutes for our food. It was about an hour before closing and everything started shutting down. All the kids came out and started eating and counting their tips at the table next to us as we still were waiting for our food. When the food finally came out, I got a beet salad (very good) and asked for tuna seared rare on top. Instead, the tuna came out well-done. After returning it, it came back...rare, seared just enough to be cold inside with no distinguishable color on the outside. Likewise we ordered 6 reasonably priced oysters and we understood why; they were served at room temperature, no ice, and disintegrated upon removal from the shell. Like some others who have reviewed here, I hesitated to write this review because then that means other people will know about our brunch spot (which has not yet become overrun with hoards of hungry people). It's one of the few places in town where you can walk in and be seated right away. That's just one of the perks. But really, the best part is the food, of course! One of my favorite things about this place is that they use a ton of local goods and ingredients for their fare and beverages. My favorite local option being the Three Ships coffee - yummo! Great choice! The food is also SUPER delish and is quite obviously made from scratch: cooked perfectly, lots of flavor, and they give you plenty. Finally, my husband and I have been here twice and the service has always been good. The people who work at Simple Eats are very kind. We've always been greeted in short order and never had to wait too long for food or drinks. This is the "large" Local Farmer salad with grilled shrimp which cost me $15. As you can see, the salad was tiny and came with only 3 shrimp (which cost $5 to add on). I called to see if this was the normal amount and was told that in fact it was. Each time we come here it is perfect! Service is wonderful, food is fresh and unique. I just love the way it looks and feels inside and outside. I never give 5 stars because that means there's no room for improvement, but if I could give 4.99 simples eats, I would. This little diner represents everything that is right with in the local, fresh "farm-to-table" scene. Let's start with ambiance. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. It has a home style feel and the decor gives you the impression of rustic eatery. No 2 tables, chairs, lamps are the same. It's clear that the owners strive to convey that nothing is mass produced, from the delicious food, right down to the chair you sit in. The staff. Incredibly friendly (and easy on the eyes if I do say so myself). I've often wondered where all the cute girls in VB hang out for Sunday brunch, apparently it's at simple eats! That being said. The staff was welcoming from the minute we walked in the door to the minute we said our goodbyes. Our server Kristie made sure that our needs were addressed expeditiously without being over beating or hovering and making us feel rushed. The my food arrived prompt and my beverage was never empty. The food. Oh god the food... I feel like putting how I felt into words wouldn't do it justice. I ordered a breakfast burrito with avocado and a side of sour cream. The portion was the perfect side. The tortilla was grilled to perfection, which is not a term I throw around lightly. The potatoes inside are tricky to get them cooked just right, but simple eats appears to have figured out the secret and they truly hit it out of the park. The ONLY negative I had was the fresh salsa with black beans was served as a side which made it difficult to put on the burrito with each bite. I'll take half the blame for this as I am sure in the future o can just ask for it to be cooked inside of the burrito. It was just an odd default as a side. Then bill. While 22 bucks for a non alcoholic breakfast is a little on the steep side, when you look at the total dining experience and quality of the ingredients in your meal, it's actually pretty reasonable! I'll be the first to admit, I'm NOT a fan of the concept of tipping (but that's a story for another day). After my experience at simple eats, I felt as though I wanted to tip rather than pressured to which truly says something about my Sunday brunch experience! I stuck between a rock and a harder rock because I want to scream from the rooftops how amazing this place is, but on the flip side I don't want to make the line longer when I return, because I absolutely will be returning!
