Fish with veggies from the buffet line
Maria S.

A friend recommended this diner. You can order from the menu or go through the steam table which I did. I had the fish which comes with three veggies. The serving was generous so I had leftovers for a second meal. The fish filet was good and so were the cabbage, carrots and broccoli. A roll was brought to my table. The service was friendly. I sat in a comfortable booth. Some folks were dining at the diners's bar. There's plenty of parking.

ATTN: BREAKFAST LOVERS I wanted a home cooked breakfast and was tired of the usual breakfast eateries. I came here on an empty stomach and glad I did because the serving are pretty large. Our waitress was very sweet and provided exceptional service. The restaurant has a old school diner feel with seating right in front of the kitchen. You can choose between a booth or a table. The food was fresh to order and the bacon is like no other! Try the biscuits and gravy they are so fluffy and delicious. I had my eggs over easy, but you can cook your eggs to your preference. Try the tasty pancakes with strawberry jam and syrup you will not disappointed. I will be back to try their French toast!

Great little spot with consistently good breakfast! Simos special always hits the spot. (ask for the hashbrowns extra crispy)

Gyro Sandwich with golden fries.
Mic A.

A very unassuming diner on heavily trafficked N Shepherd Drive. There was a time when there were numerous places like this located all along Shepherd Drive. To my knowledge Simos might be the last one of its kind. I decided to check it out after seeing they offered a Gyro sandwich basket. So I had already made my decision before I walked in. I walked into the diner with its high ceilings and dark wood trim. It had a welcoming atmosphere and people were lined up to order from the day's specials offered at the steam table. I had to walk over and take a look. Everything looked so tempting. The turkey and dressing just about snagged me. But I was craving a gyro. Gyros are hard to come by north of 610N. So I took a seat at the counter and placed my order. A few minutes later I had a platter of thick cut golden fries and a gyro sandwich stuffed to brim with succulent sliced green gyro meat topped off with diced tomatoes and onions and homemade tzatziki sauce all wrapped up tightly in red and white checkered paper. I went for a golden fry. It was better than good. Crispy outer skin and flavorful tender insides. Next I surveyed my gyro. I'm pretty sure that this was the largest gyro I've ever seen. I removed the paper and lifted this Greek taco to take a bite. I struggled with lining up the gyro to mouth and then to open up my mouth enough to take a good bite. A large bite was impossible and I had to settle for what seemed like a small bite. But the small bite filled my mouth and normally would have been a large bite from a regular gyro. The meat was juicy and savory. The oregano and other spices tasted like homemade. I could have made two servings with what I was served. I stopped at about 3/4's and stopped. I still had plenty of fries and decided I would take the rest home with me for a snack later. I would rate the gyro with fries good. Above average and very satisfying. I can't wait to go back and try out the specials on the steam table. Oh and also the breakfast offerings. Nice job Simos'!

Biscuit and gravy

Simo's diner gives you a no nonsense Northeast 70's diner experience and happily advertise their food is meant for working folks. Pretty darn good for retirees too. Great prices and hearty plates of no frills comfort food. You won't find any wayward parsley here as food is for eating not for looking pretty (come to think of it, no one plates with parsley any more but you get my drift). A side of bacon gets you FIVE slices. A biscuit and gravy side offers an option of one or two biscuits but trust me when I say one is enough. And that sausage gravy is full of savory pellets of sausage and bursting with flavor. No fancy, clever names or complicated dishes, just quality essentials and a warm, welcoming atmosphere where the staff gets to know your name.

I got breakfast ordered here during the pandemic and it was delicious!! I was about to easily call to place my order and it was done within 10 mins. I drove over, paid, came home to the most delicious breakfast of bacon, eggs, pancakes, biscuits, and grits. It hit the spot! I'll be trying their lunch specials which I posted a picture of. Loved it!

First time eating from here. Placed an order to go by phone and the lady that took our order was patient and helpful. When we picked up order it was fast and young lady that was busy but still managed to greet us and help us. Order 4 French toast combo it includes a meat of your choice and eggs, we chose sausage patties and 2 with over medium sunny side egg, one scrambled and one white scrambled eggs. Good portion sides and condiments. The ambiance looks friendly and family oriented. We plan to go back and eat there with the family in the future.

Eggs were OK, kinda bland. Bacon smelled funny and tasted nasty. Hash browns were just OK. Biscuit was nice. Only got one refill on coffee.

It's the kind of place where you instantly feel relaxed yet excited for what's to come. The food is nothing short of exceptional. We ordered Lamb chops and shank special today. Every dish feels thoughtfully prepared, with fresh ingredients and flavors that are both vibrant and comforting. You can truly taste the authenticity in every bite--whether it's the perfectly seasoned meats, the rich sauces, or the beautifully balanced sides. What really elevates the experience, though, is the service. The staff are attentive, friendly, and genuinely passionate about what they do. They go above and beyond to make you feel welcomed and taken care of without ever being overbearing. Athena's isn't just a place to eat--it's an experience. Driving…read morefrom Montrose, that's quite a reach but once I looked this place up on yelp and google it was clear we must try. Thankfully, my friend had called ahead and asked for a table as we were rolling about 7 folks deep, and we were seated instantly. The place is pretty nondescript located in the same shopping strip as a gas station. They serve your standard Greek fare, but they also get creative and serve things a different way. For instance, we ordered the Greek fajitas, which was pieces of gyro meat with bell peppers, and onions served on a hot sizzling plate. It was very similar to going somewhere and ordering a Gyro plate, but I appreciated the way it was served. The meat was tender and so well seasoned. In my opinion it's hard to get Gyros right, it's easy to dry it out, and often it's too salty. That's not the case here! Around the table people ordered a slew of diverse dishes, and the clear winner was the lamb shank! Next time we go we're getting that. The person who owns this place is incredibly sweet, there was a birthday party at the table next to us, and she came by to us, introduced herself, and explained that when they drop plates to celebrate we are to join in, and yell Opa! Love that some places still do this, it's a cute tradition! Can't wait to go through more of the menu and try again, next time I'm up for a trek!

All 3 meals were really flavorful, good quality, really well-seasoned, very juicy and so delicious. The gyros and burger are without question imo the best in TX. Ekko's and Nick The Greek are 2nd n 3rd for Greek food for me. I always got the gyros sandwich as opposed to the plate before which is odd bc I always prefer meat plates over sandwich form in other foods like bbq, steak, etc. The meat pieces were all really tasty and had some slight char to them too. The taziki sauce is always cold, creamy in feel and refreshing with a good yogurt aroma to it. It's a great bonus and the gyros didn't even need it tbh. The tomatoes were nicely refreshing and the exotic, cool center dolma is always a little treat with meals here. The rice and chunky lemon potatoes with my meals were always mild but still great in texture and prep. As I said before; from my experiences in every single Greek cafe, if the taziki sauce is good, the gyros will be too. It's a solid symptom and indicator imo. As for the burger, very rarely are burger places only in TX actually any good for the past 15 years. So many are just average or below lacking seasoning or a great overall flavor. Niko Niko's, Goode Company Hamburgers and TX Hamburger Palace are my top 3 in that order for it. Each different too. The brioche buns were just the right thickness and very soft to make the beef patty stick out well. The patty was so nice in charbroiled taste, saltiness, richness, beefiness and tender in every bite. A good burger doesn't need much in toppings, but cool, refreshing, tomatoes are a must for me and pickles add some tangy crunch too. For steak rare, but for a burger medium to medium rare. I had never seen or heard of their Greek Spaghetti n Meat Sauce before. This was like a Greek Bolognese with a lot of love in its flavor. The noodles were drained, very moist and so soft. I don't like too much cheese, so I took some off, but still like some. The meat sauce gravy itself was really flavorful, savory, fatty enough and had that subtle sweet, warm spice aroma you get in the Greek lasagna. I like to get dessert here sometimes when I have extra room, bc they have some great options like their galaktobourreko, chocolate ganache cake, etc. The service was very welcoming, friendly and efficient on these visits.

We got the gyro sandwich, gyro plate with fries, and mille feuille dessert. I thoroughly enjoyed my gyro sandwich. The pita was very fragrant, and the meat was good. The fries were fine. They have a lot of desserts on display, and we got the mille feuille, which was a super flaky cake-appearing pastry that gave more baklava vibes once we dug into it. The friendly employee told us that he gained a significant amount of weight from eating it. It was very dry and crusty with cold cream interspersed within the layers. It crumbled all over the table (we cleaned it up). It seemed like a unique dessert that was nice to try, but I don't think either of us liked it that much, and we didn't end up finishing it. The gyros were great though.

While the wine selection and date friendly vibes were good selling points, the subpar service, high prices, and average food made for a less than stellar experience. These factors likely contributed to their recent closure, which is unfortunate. The interior was modern and intimate. High ceilings and large mirrors made the place feel more spacious than it was. It was a nice vibe that made the place visually appealing and date friendly. The brick walls, nice decor pieces, and ultra clean bathrooms were a big thumbs up. But vibes can't save poorly executed food. The octopus was dry and overcooked, the potato croquettes were a bit disappointing, as was, the trio of of dips. The souvlaki was supposed to be their most popular dish, but after trying their ribeye, pork, and chicken, it was simply too bland and not up to par. The gyro platters did not fare much better and the lamb chops were under seasoned. The lemon potatoes needed way more lemon but the only dish that was acceptable was the spanakopita (aka spinach pie). It was all overpriced, especially given the modest portions. Service was often aloof or nowhere to be found. When the nice woman butchered souvlaki and spanakopita, my gut was already in cringe. At least there was discount for cash. While I am saddened by their departure, I take comfort in knowing there are better options available in the city.
