Simon sushi is such a small and cute sushi restaurant. There is limited seating so we made sure to come right when they opened at 5:30. The server immediately came over and gave us hot towels which I love. this place is also BYOB so we brought our own sake and beer, which he gladly chilled for us. Our server was awesome and quick. The food did not disappoint for my first time dining here. Even the house salad was good (loved their ginger dressing, not your typical yellow based dressing, it was more brown). Definitely try to Karaage chicken if you like popcorn chicken. The meat was so tender and nice. For rolls DEFINITELY try the BTS roll (better than sex) who knew just having tempura flakes inside a roll would be THAT GOOD... It blew my mind how good that roll was. We also tried a special amberjack sashimi with kiwi, which was really good and unique. It was almost like a heaven style but with kiwis & picodegallo, a combo which i would have never thought to be good with sashimi. The beef tataki was good, not the best, but loved the raw onions. We also tried salmon and mackerel sashimi, and some nigiri, everything of course tasted very fresh. We were regulars for a long time but stopped going after we realized they had "preferred regulars" versus regulars. We usually bring drinks and send a glass or 2 to the sushi chef. They have seen our kids grow up and after it all, it just did not feel like our business was appreciated. read more

Simon Sushi is located in about as off-the-wall location as you can imagine - on the Central Expressway access road, just north of Plano Parkway. It's tucked away location is probably why I've never come here before. A coworker took us here for lunch. It's a small, welcoming place with limited seating - but enough to hold a bustling lunch crowd. We sat at the bar and ordered from the chef. Everything was tasty, but my coworker (who was in charge of ordering) opted for items on the special menu. What we had for lunch were truly unique sushi items - again, tasty but nothing you'd have other places. I guess I'm more of an eel roll and straight sashimi kind of girl. Although I enjoyed what I had, it wasn't the type of sushi that I would make the drive back to have again. I didn't have any of their standard rolls. Based on the quality of the creative items, I'm sure it's good. But I have a couple of other places that I know I love, so they rate 5-stars in my book and Simon's will sit at a 4-star level. If you're in the area, I suggest you give it a try if you're in the mood for really different sushi (just remember to order off the special menu). read more

Simon is what pushes Simon's Sushi from a 4 to 5-star establishment. I was lucky enough that my dining companion had frequented the restaurant before and Simon remembered him. We sat at the bar and it was obvious that all patrons enjoyed Simon's conversation and friendly demeanor as much as the delicious food. I tried a few of the rolls from their unique menu. Monday Night Roll (asparagus inside with crab meat on top, with wasabi mayo), their signature BTS roll (California roll with salmon and pico de gallo on top), the salmon shinjo, and Manhattan Roll. Simon's creations were definitely unique; who puts pico de gallo on sushi??!! Brilliant. All the rolls were delicious in their individual ways. I have been eating here for almost 20 years and the food is, and has, always been some of the best. the warm welcome when you arrive and when you leave are also part of the ambience. The lunch sashimi bento box is an incredible deal at $16. you get five pieces of sashimi, soup, salad, shrimp and veggie tempura, California roll with all the spices and trimmings. Simon was the head chef at nakomoto for years but left because he wanted greater control and creativty on his menu. What makes Simon's special is the off the menu items. Sit at the bar and ask for the "cheat sheet". It has most of simon's special roll, the stuff regulars eat. Don't be shy, strike up a conversation with Simon and ask what's new. If you want to feel like a regular bring your own booze and don't forget to share a glass with Simon. A sure fire way to get a little more attention in this little place. Reccomended rolls: Bts Monday Tuesday Thursday 911 Tuna scallion and pretty much everything on the special menu. Simons is very affordable for what it is. They offer standard rolls at around 6 dollars and specilty rolls for 12. Comparable rolls at any other upper class sushi place would be 12-20. Quality sushi. Simon at the helm. He was chatting up a couple at the sushi bar. It was charming. I had the mermaid roll which was excellent and looked great. Tuna sashimi tasted as it should - a delicate treasure from the sea. The seaweed salad was also unique and tasty. We have been going to this place for almost a decade. Is it super high end douche baggery sushi? Nope. Please head to downtown for the no reservation wait for five hours poser sushi and wallet rape. For us? This is our local sushi joint and we love it. It's not cheap, but good food never is. Last Friday was another wonderful experience. Catepillar, Dragon, Cucumber, and Rainbow rolls were awesome as well as our standbys. There is no "secret menu", sit at the bar and ask Simon for whatever you want. Went here with family so ordered a whole bunch. started off with Kara age (think popcorn chicken) nothing fancy but meat was tender and juicy. wouldve been good combined with ramen or something. ordered a bunch of rolls (bts, three egg, happy eel and some other eel. ) all were delicious . got a chirashi bowl and loved it. I always love chirashi cause you can't go wrong with that! def recommend this place if you're in the mood for some sushi. service was great , except the food did take a little longer but that's expected for a Friday night dinner. read more

I have been going to Simon's since, at least 2009, I moved then to Florida in 2012 and guess what? You cannot find as fresh and delicious fish in Florida sushi then you can at Simon's. Hands down, the best and freshest fish for sushi and sashimi in the Dallas area. Besides that, Simon and his family are always welcoming and accommodating. The price point is good for the quality of food, the fancy sushi rolls run about $12/$13 and our favorite is the Manhattan Roll. I have been a fan of Simon for years. He is the one to first introduce me on how to,"follow one's own taste", towards eating and actually liking sushi ! (I first met him while dining at Nakamoto in Plano). He has always prepared what I consider "the standard" on what excellent sushi flavor should be. Simon's expertise in his field, makes it comfortable for anyone who has an interest in enjoying sushi! If you are unsure on what to order, just let him know your general taste in seafood, and he will make sure everything is done during your dining experience to find you a favorite dish. My mother loves the futomaki from this place. It's very similar to kimbap and she loves that. I think they use too much of that crunchy stuff in their sushi. The service is ok. I heard some good things about this place from Nextdoor and Facebook so my son and I thought we would try it out. The restaurant is outdated and is not a very pleasing site when you walk in. I've eaten sushi at around 20 different sushi restaurants and know the difference between fresh good sushi and not so great. My son ordered a California roll, shimp nigiri, yellow tail nigiri, and Salmon nigiri. I ordered yellow tail, salmon, eel nigiri, and a volcano roll. My son said the California rolls were really good, so I tried one. The rice was cooked perfectly, and the crab was fresh and taste really good. I then took a bite of the eel and that's where everything started going down hill. The nigiri sushi was not fresh, and had a smell of not fresh. Maybe it was the day we were there on a Tuesday night, but it was not fresh. I then got my volcano roll brought to the table. This was a little different than any volcano roll I've eaten at other sushi places. It was not spicy at all and the sauce was luke warm like it came from a microwave and cooled before getting to table. It also had mushrooms in it which is something I've never seen before. I hate two pieces and thought it wants it's best, but just ok. This roll is $13 on the menu and looked like a $5 plate. I went to get the third piece and found a hair that was about 6-7" long out of my roll! I was disgusted!!! I think I threw up in my mouth a little. I called the server over and he asked what was wrong. I showed him and he took the plate and asked what I wanted. I said "please remove this and bring the check" He again apologized and went away from our table. The manager/owner came over and I asked if she wanted my honest opinion. I told her everything I just explained above. She said "well, we sell a lot of sushi from here" with that I said "because these people don't know what good sushi is". I noticed on my bill they charged me for the volcano roll that had a hair in it. I tipped well and decided that I will NEVER eat here again. We can go down the street to Zenna and pay 1/3 the price at happy hour and the quality is better! Skip this place if you like your sushi fresh and taste like clean fresh fish, and if you do go to this place watch out for the hairs in your food. read more

Apparently they've really, REALLY gone downhill. Salmon was dried out & cracked. The Chicken Teriyaki was frozen reconstituted chicken with an odd flavor. Went straight to the trash. The Volcano Roll looked VERY odd. I asked if they brought the right one & they said yes. It was basically a non-spicy roll topped with mushrooms, scallops & masago caviar. Instead of spicy mayo, they topped it with warmed-up Miracle Whip. I took one bite & sent it back telling them that it was gross. COMPLETELY DISGUSTING! I have been to Simon's a couple of times now and have not been disappointed yet. I read the reviews before going so naturally I ordered the BTS roll. It actually lived up to the hype. It was quite tasty and offered several different textures which was nice. I also thought the pico on top was a nice touch. We also ordered some standards like Spicy Tuna and eel which were good. Then we went out on a limb and ordered the #40roll (I think that is the correct number but I am sure it was on the specialty menu and was a number). It was outstanding!! I typically favor spicy rolls so this one was right up my alley. I have had the 911 roll before and it is pretty tasty but the #40 roll stole the show. The only thing keeping Simons from achieving the 5th star is the wait staff. They are all very nice but sometimes seem to "disappear". It's BYOB so naturally I brought in a bottle of whiskey. I was ordering sprite to mix it with and the waiter was a little slow to bring additional sprites and then when she did get there on time she tried to take the Sprite that was on the table unfinished.... Fresh sushi and very friendly service means I'll be back! As soon as you walk in, Simon yells a greeting from behind the sushi bar. He is so funny! We had the Yellowtail Sashimi Special, the Scallop Roll, Better Than Sex Roll, and the Mermaid Roll. Surprisingly, I'd say the BTS Roll was actually my least favorite--personal preference I suppose. The Mermaid Roll was REALLY good--very spicy, though. I'd get any of these again. Had Mango Mochi Ice Cream for dessert--definitely tasty! The server was good at suggesting rolls based on our preferences, which I really liked. Sushi can be a little overwhelming when there are so many things to pick from. I basically told our server what fish & sauces I like, and he suggested all of our rolls (except Yelpers suggested BTS Roll). I love finding hole-in-the-wall sushi places that aren't trying to be uber-trendy. And since it's BYOB, you'll save some money on the cost of your alcohol! Win-win. read more

The place is dated, their special menu has no pricings on it and they tell you "pretty much everything is $12" bill is calculated by the waitress and they seem to round up numbers to make it even. I was meeting up with a friend for dinner and she wanted to take me to a place Ikura in Allen, however when we pulled up the doors were open and there were trucks...Seriously? Doing remodeling during the dinner hours? Wow..what kind of business do you run? But I digress..we ended up heading here, to Simon's Sushi instead. First walk in and the place takes you back to 1983. Pretty in pink table cloths and Japanese muzak, but the hostess and waitress are all friendly and welcoming, they brought us hot towels and drinks immediately. We looked at the menu and were underwhelmed..I remembered yelpers mentioning special roll, but I didn't realize it was 'off the menu' so we just ordered some regular stuff. We got the philly roll, which was ok. Cajun roll, bland, and yellowtail roll which was chopped up yellowtail and green onion..pretty tasty. The rolls were all kinda just slapped on the plate. I may as well have gotten a to-go sushi at the grocery and dumped it on a plate. I also ordered dobin mushi, a mushroom broth with chicken, shrimp & mushroom in a teapot. Really really yummy. BYOB Sushi Restaurant with a huge selection of creative rolls and authentic Japanese dishes - can't be beat for quality, selection, price, and service. Everyone who works here is friendly, helpful and all-around awesome :) I know everyone writes about the BTS roll, but I feel the need to add my two cents as well, only because I used to not understand what the hype about the BTS was all about. I thought it was good, but it didn't impress me the first time I tried it... that's because I was eating it wrong. You can't just pick it up and eat it right off the plate as soon as it hits the table, like most other rolls. You won't get the full BTS experience unless you let it soak in the delicious sauce, spoon some of the sauce onto the top/sides of the roll, and eat with the spoon so that you get the roll, pico, and sauce all in one bite. It may not be the most polite way to eat it, but it's the surely tastiest way :) Like just about everyone else, it's now one of my favorites at Simon's! They have such an extensive menu, I think it would take at least 100 visits just to taste everything. All the dishes I've tried so far have been great! A few to try... - Yellowtail Special - My sister & boyfriend's favorite!! - Happy Eel... eel, avocado, cucumber roll with shrimp, mayo, masago, and a drop of sriacha on top. Happy eel = happy tummy. - Spicy Eel... not a spicy roll contrary to its name - the inside of the roll has crunch and crab meat and is topped with eel, avocado, and eel sauce. Very yummy! - 911 roll... spicy and tasty. Good if you like spicy/jalapenos. - Korean short rib bento box... Simon's short ribs are SO GOOD. Better than most Korean restaurants I've been to. If you are overwhelmed by the menu and have no idea what to order, ask Simon or one of the other knowledgeable staff members. Upon reading previous Yelp reviews, I was beyond excited to try this new place out. Very hole-in-the-wall, which intimidates me but excites me. However, three strikes and this place is off my list. 1) I was the ONLY customer in the restaurant my entire stay- 6 PM to 7 PM. Weird. What's worse is that all 6 staff in the restaurant stared me down my entire meal. 2) I tried to take a picture of the incredible specialty menu to share with Yelp-- the one thing I wish I had seen upon reading reviews--and got scolded by a waitress for taking pictures (there was no flash or sound.) 3) I ordered the BTS roll (since everyone seems to be drooling over it--rightfully so) and hot tea. Cost me over twenty dollars! Whaaaat? The roll was delightful, until I was home vomiting for the rest of the night and into the morning. Safe to say, I will not be back. For shame. read more

I went to this restaurant while visiting the Dallas area because of the high ratings on Yelp, and also because it is open later than most of the other sushi restaurants in the area. While it was edible, the experience was nothing to write home about. First off, the menu they give you when you sit down is extremely limited. I guess the "secret menu" is supposed to make you feel special or something? I'd rather just be presented with it upfront, personally. We got the BTS roll, and I don't know what kind of sex you're having, but it's almost certainly not. Another annoying thing was that the prices aren't on the menu. BTS roll was ~$13 and the green shrimp roll, which was literally two bites, cost $8.50 and was mediocre. I'm not familiar enough with the Dallas area to recommend other sushi restaurants to you, but I'll keep you posted once I find a good one! read more

The list of special sushi rolls are $12.... it's not on the menu and I don't know why they didn't add it. I order the BTS rolls... "signature roll." I'm sorry, but the BTS is not "better than sex." It's lower than average special rolls. The sauce overpowers the fish. You can't really taste anything, but the sauce and peppers. Simon's Sushi has the worst spicy tuna rolls. Can't even taste the tuna. The green mussels taste fishy mix with water... The taste was bland and disappointing. Sushi Sake wins for the best green mussels in Dallas! I will give Simon's Sushi a little credit... best volcano rolls! I go back for that. The service is good. They treat your pretty much like family. I don't recommend beef tataki as well. Sushi Sake's tataki is better. The albacore sashimi... came out soaked in spicy ponzu sauce. I couldn't even have just the fish when I ordered SASHIMI! When you go out for sushi... it's for the fish. I feel Simon's Sushi tries too hard. Average sushi for the price of an upscale restaurant. I'll stick with Sushi Sake off Collins Rd. It's not far from Simon's sushi. I think the chef is Chinese, but he keeps saying Hai Hai to the customers and then I hear him speaking Chinese to his workers... I'm baffled by this. LOL read more

In the past, I've been to Simon's a few times around lunch. I had kind of forgotten about this place, as I haven't been in a few months, but decided to go last night for as I was craving some of their North Texas Rolls. Let's just say I'd forgotten exactly what good sushi is. I'm tempted to lower the stars of a few other sushi places I've recently reviewed. First of all, everything they make is great. I haven't had anything I didn't like. You have to get the BTS roll, and I'm a fan of the North Texas roll as well (this is a kind of polarizing roll however). UNAGI. Get it. Just do it. You can call and thank me later. I love eel, but I'm starting to think the eel at Simon's must love me back. On a normal day it is great and on a great day it's absolutely heavenly. As far as atmosphere, well everyone is usually pretty friendly. At lunch it has been tame and a quiet place to grab a bite. Last night about an hour before close, it was the one of a kind "local atmosphere" that I've read so often about but never experienced in person. I was beginning to think it was a myth that you could find it in Dallas. The place is BYOB, and before the end of it all shots were being passed around from table to table, laughter filled the place and even the sushi chefs were joining in. This is the kind of place you'd want to be a local. The only draw back, you can rack up a pretty big bill here. You can order some cheaper rolls, but I'd rather just save up a bit and go all out when eating here. It's worth every penny. Simon, I'll be back again and again! Well... I finally did it. I had the BetterThanSex roll. Granted, it's been a while... but maybe I just have had a more than a handful of really good Rolls in the hay back in the day, cause this just wasn't better than S. Don't get me wrong. I loved the BTS roll, but maybe I need some of the AMERICONE DREAM ice cream from Ben and Jerry's Katie posted about the last night to put this over the edge. The BTS roll is a spicy tuna crunch roll topped with salmon and homemade Pico de Gallo. And then, I realized... I was hungrier than I had originally thought. This led to the additional order of a California Roll and a 2pc Tuna Sushi order. As I was finishing my meal, a guy sat down at the other end of the Sushi bar and ordered a "9-1-1". Apparently it's a Spicy Tuna roll topped with Guacamole and thinly sliced Jalapenos. I'm getting that next time. APPARENTLY THIS PLACE IS BYOB, not that matters to me in the least. Great sushi at a great price in an unfortunately out-of-the-way place. By out of the way, I, of course, mean Plano; east at that. Don't let it's strip center facade,right between Hooters and El Fenix, fool you. Simon and his wife oversee all that comes out of the kitchen, and it all makes my mouth water. This is one of those places where the food gets better the more you go. I always feel like there is an off menu item that still alludes me. I have discovered BTS (better than sex) and the 911. I highly recommend the latter. It's basically a spicy tuna roll with homemade guacamole and a jalapeño slice on top of each piece. Somehow the subtle simplicity along with a wink to his Texas environs makes the 911 one of my favorite rolls in town. The place is BYOB. So, feel free to bring some and plan on a bit of a wait for dinner. When you go you'll notice that regulars make up a considerable amount of the clientele. I went to Simon's for lunch on Friday. It was not relatively packed- but it was spring break so there's that. In any case, we were greeted with prompt service and friendly servers. It's a very tiny space and it's BYOB. We ordered a few rolls and I'll review them as I go: BTS "better than sex" Roll- This was actually very good and the pico de gallo added a nice twist. I normally don't try things with Pico, but this was something I had to try. It was very delicious and the flavors complimented each other. Pink Lady- This was my favorite. This was the perfect mixture of flavors and spicy enough for me to be a happy girl. Spicy Tuna- Very good, a classic that is hard to mess up. Fresh tasting. California Roll- Again a classic roll that is hard to mess up, the person I was with really only likes this type of roll. Overall, the experience was great and the atmosphere was friendly and inviting. I will definitely return to try more rolls-- also, look at the secret menu, there are tons of really good rolls on there that I wanna give a shot. read more

Even just reading the other reviews for Simon's is making me really hungry-- I LOve the yellowtail special and kimba roll and wish I could have a plate of each right now. The yellowtail special sauce is so tasty, I usually keep the plate after I'm done so that I can use the sauce for other rolls (sometimes embarrassingly... once the waitress came to take the plate and I freaked out and requested that it stay, woops) and the warm sauce on top of the kimba is super satisfying. I also love the salad dressing that they make themselves there; I'm not sure what makes it different from other places (you'd think salad dressing is pretty standard), but it's really delicious and tasty, so I recommend salad too. I guess I really like sauces... This is an excellent place for a date or for any kind of special occassion, or even just anytime you're craving some good sushi, really. I was quite disappointed on my first few visits though! I had decided to give up - but a friend told me that it was her fave and that I must give it one more try and order the rolls that she told me about that are not on the menu. thank God I went back! it is a heavenly treat to my tongue! they welcome me like family when I walk in. I bring my own sake! this is what I order: salad w/ extra ginger dressing (best dressing ever) Saturday night roll Tues night roll w/ added cream cheese tuna scallion special yellowtail sashimi BTS (duh) fireroll mermaid roll hamichikama (sp? - it is tuna cheek - grilled) spicy crunchy tuna handroll (ask for Lynn's roll) there just is no better place to go for fresh, healthy, perfectly prepared fish. it IS spendy - we easily spend $75 for 2 of us. but there are less expensive rolls that you can order. it is a bit of a hole in the wall and it is in a strip mall - but that is part of it's charm! the service is simply impeccable. Okay. So this place seems to receive quite a bit of good reviews. I had totally forgotten but I had eaten here couple years ago and wasn't impressed. Decided to give Simon's another try. Ok, without sounding too racial, I can see why non-Asians would like this place. Most of the rolls are suited for non-Asian pallet. Since the BTS roll is the signature dish, I had to try it. Based on the description, I had an idea of what it would taste like and it basically tasted exactly as I imagined. So the big question is, do you go to Simon's for authentic Japanese food or do you go for good tasting food? If you want food that tastes good (or okay in my opinion), Simon's may be a good place for you. If you want authentic Japanese/Sushi, I'd try elsewhere (Sushi Sake is probably still the top-Japanese/Sushi joint in the area). So the BTS roll was okay. The agedashi tofu was again okay. The tofu part was good but the sauce was too bland. The amaebi and ikura were okay; the pieces were a bit small. The aji was very good. As was the Salmon Eye (ikura & rice wrapped in seaweed and the entire thing wrapped in ika with an quail egg on top). Overall, I'd say Simon's was okay. I'd stick to basic sushi/sashimi things on the menu. For me, I like traditional Japanese dishes so I wasn't too impressed with any of Simon's creations. read more

Simon's Sushi is one of my go-to places for date night (there's a porn store and a Planned Parenthood next door, how could you NOT take a date there?) I was introduced to it by my boss, who frequents the place quite a bit (he did the illustrations on the t-shirts they wear... he's the guy at the bar playing the ukulele in said illustration). Is it the best place to get "authentic" sushi or Japanese food? No, definitely not. But that doesn't make it bad, per say. If you're ordering off of the regular menu, you'll probably be disappointed. You have to ask for the off-the-menu menu. Why is the off-the-menu menu not on the regular menu? I have no idea. It just is. My personal favorite, along with most other people, is the BTS. My second favorite is the Saturday Night Special. I forget exactly what's in it, but there's tiny little slivers of lemon on top of each roll that really sets it over the top. It's not the cheapest place in the world (the off-the-menu rolls are about $10-$11 a piece), however, the fact that it's BYOB really offsets the cost of the total meal (especially if you're a lush like me and the girls I usually bring here). I usually give a beer to Simon. He likes that. In the end, it's not a place I'd eat at every day, or even every weekend, but it's not a bad place take a girl if you're a 20-something year old guy like myself. read more

Like A WALK IN THE SPRING RAIN we walked in like THE WRECKING CREW with FISTS OF FURY. Then we met Simon, the BIG BOSS. From flawless sashimi to inventive rolls the sushi kept coming relentlessly like Bruce Lee in a room full of thugs it just wouldn't stop then ENTER THE DRAGON, a roll shaped like a dragon with a head and tail. We ate until there was a deafening quiet in the room then quickly paid and ran out never to be seen again. While simon may look like Bruce Lee and the sign outside belongs in an old 1970's movie the sushi is to Die for. Hi yah! read more
